The last six months have been a challenging time, and at Stephenson Smart we have been busier than ever in supporting our clients to help them access the fi nancial help that has been made available to them. There has been signifi cant fi nancial support put in place to support individuals and businesses through the pandemic. Some of the schemes are still in place and open for application. Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and Bonus Scheme (furlough) This has been the most all-encompassing, varying and challenging of the schemes the Government put in place. The act of paying the wages of more than nine million people helped to bolster the economy and prevent mass unemployment at the start of the pandemic. The scheme is now winding down and ends on October 31st. However, to further try and save jobs, there will be a bonus of a one-off payment of £1000 to UK employers for every furloughed employee who remains continuously employed through to the end of January 2021. Payments will be made in February 2021. VAT At the start of the pandemic, businesses were able to defer VAT payments, this scheme has now closed. However, to support the struggling hospitality industry, VAT has been reduced from twenty percent to fi ve percent on the supply of food and non-alcoholic percent on the supply of food and non-alcoholic drinks, accommodation, and attractions until January 12th, 2021. Some businesses are passing this saving onto their customers, but some are using it to help bolster their balance sheets. Business Rates Businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors do not have to pay business rates for the 2020 to 2021 tax year. Eligible properties are shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, cinemas, live music venues, sports clubs, gyms, spas, hotels, guest houses and self-catering accommodation. All eligible businesses should by now have had the discount applied. If you think your business is entitled to the relief, but you haven’t had it, you need to contact your billing authority. There is more information about all these schemes and other fi nancial support on our website; we are keen to help our clients, and other businesses in our communities, navigate this challenging time. Keep safe and well,

Chris
