Awelldesignedcollegepreparatorycurriculumreectsboththeinterestsandtheneedsofthestudent.The schoolprovidestheexibilitywhichallowsthefulldevelopmentofindividualinterestswithoutsacricingwhat isessentialintheliberalartseducationofayoungwomantoday.

EverystudentattheAcademyoftheSacredHeartreceivesintensivetrainingintheacademicskillsofEnglish, Mathematics,Science,SocialStudiesandWorldLanguage.EssentialpartsofthisprogramareArt,Music, PracticalDesign,TechnologyandTheology,andWellness.

DiplomaRequirements

InordertoreceiveadiplomafromtheAcademyoftheSacredHeart,astudentmustsatisfactorilycompletethe followingprogramofcourses.Studentsmustbeinattendanceforfour(4)years(considerationswillbemadefor transferstudents).Onehalf(.5)creditisgrantedforthesuccessfulcompletionofone-semestercoursesandone credit(1)isgrantedforthesuccessfulcompletionofafullyearofcoursework Thechartbelowrepresentsthe minimumgraduationrequirements.Anyvariations(suchasonlineorsummerschoolclassestakenforcredit), mustbepreapprovedbytheAcademicDepartment,CollegecounselorandtheDirectorsoftheUpperSchool.

Enteringintotheninthgrade,astudent'sscheduleisplannedbytheUpperSchoolleadershipandcounseling teamandafterconsiderationofherhighschoolplacementtestscores,prolereportsfromhermiddleschool, discussionwithparentsandteachers,andinputfromthestudent Eachspring,allotherstudents(current Grades9 11)plantheirscheduleforthenextyearwiththeirparentsandwithinputfromtheirteachers,college counselorandUpperSchoolleadershipteam.

AdvancedPlacement(AP)Courses

IncoordinationwiththeCollegeBoard,highschoolstudentsaroundthenationareprovidedwiththe opportunitytotakecollegelevelcoursesandexamswhiletheyarestillinhighschool Atthecompletionofthe course,thestudentisrequiredtotaketheAdvancedPlacementExam.Basedonhersittingforand demonstratingeorttopassthisexam,astudent’sgrademaybeweightedforthecourse. Also,basedonexamresults,astudentmayearncredit,advancedplacement,orbothforcollege. Requirementsvaryfromcollegetocollege

SeveralcoursesareoeredattheAdvancedPlacement(AP)levelattheAcademyoftheSacredHeartwhich allowstudentstoexplorethejourneythroughcollegelevelacademicchallenges.Studentswilldevelopskillsand studyhabitsthatwillbevitalincollege Aweightingof02willbeaddedeachsemestertothenalcoursegrade, conditionaluponthestudentsittingfortheAPexamandmakingatrue,“goodfaith”eorttodowellonitat theendoftheyear.

AdditionalAPcoursesareavailablethroughMichiganVirtualandSophieConnect,aserviceoftheSacredHeart Network.OnlineAPcourseworkisgradedbytheeducatoroeringthecourse.Aweightingof0.2willbeadded eachsemestertothenalgrade,conditionaluponthestudentsittingfortheAPExamanddemonstratinga sincereattemptattheexam APcoursestakenoutsideofAcademyoftheSacredHeart,MichiganVirtualor SophieConnectmustbecompletedthroughanapproved,fullyaccreditedhighschoolprogram GPAweighting forthesecourseswillbecalculatedthesameasforin schoolAPclasses,butonlyattheendoftheyear.AllAP weightingisdependentuponthestudentsittingfortheAPexamandshowingasincereattemptontheexamat theendoftheyear.

ClassesTakenOutsideOfTheAcademyOfTheSacredHeart

Classes(withtheexceptionofAP)takenforcreditataschoolotherthantheAcademyoftheSacredHeartwill belistedonthetranscriptbutwillnotbecomputedintothegradepointaverage.Thetranscriptfromprograms attendedoutsideoftheAcademyoftheSacredHeartwillremaininthestudent’spermanentleaspartofthe student’srecord.

Intheeventastudenthasfailedaclassduringhercourseofstudies(F,0.0,0credit),shewillneedtoremediate thatgradeduringthefollowingsummerandrecoverthecredittowardsgraduation.Whetherthecourseis repeatedattheAcademyoftheSacredHeartornot,theoriginalgradewillremainonthetranscriptandremain apartofhergradepointaverage AswithanycoursetakenoutsideoftheAcademyoftheSacredHeart,the coursewillbelistedonthetranscript.Allclassestakenforcreditmustbeapprovedbythedepartmentfaculty, CollegeCounselor andtheDirectoroftheUpperSchoolpriortoenrollment.

InsufficientEnrollment

TheDirectoroftheUpperSchoolandtheAssociateDirectoroftheUpperSchoolareatlibertytocancela courseinthePlanofStudiesbook.Theschoolisalsoatlibertytomoveastudentfromonesectiontoanother sectionofthesamecourseinordertobalanceenrollment.

SeniorIndependentProject(SIP)

SeniorsattheAcademyoftheSacredHeartwithadesiretoexploreareasofinterestnotrepresentedinthe curriculummaysubmitaproposaltotheAcademicandCollegeCounselingoceforaSeniorIndependent Project(SIP).TheSIPallowsaseniortodemonstrateherintereststhroughaspecializedproject.Thisproposal wouldculminateinaresearchproject,performance,orothersignicantworkthattheseniorwoulddesignand present TheSIPisnottaughtbyafacultymember Afacultymemberwould,however,actasasupervising mentorinthisproject,evaluatingtheSIPattheendofthemarkingperiod

TheSIPproposalwillincludeobjectives,procedures,provisionsforoutput,andevaluation.Onehalfcredit (0.5)willbeawardedatthediscretionofthefacultymemberatthecompletionoftheSIP.Amaximumof0.5 creditsinthesenioryearmaybeearnedthroughtheSIP AgradeofPass/FailwillbeissuedfortheSIPandwill notbecalculatedintotheGPA.AstudentparticipatinginaSIPwillstillbeeligibletoreceivehonorsattheend oftheterm.

SeniorStudentAssistantPositions

Seniorswhohavemetalloftheirgraduationrequirementsmaysignuptobeconsideredforoneoftheavailable studentassistantpositions Thenaldecisionismadebytheteacher,Director,andDeanandwillbebasedon thefollowing:student’spastandcurrentbehavior,promiseintheeldoftheassistant ship,studentavailability duringtheclassperiodanassistantisneeded,student’sacademicstandingandstudent’soverall leadership/positiveexamplewithinthestudentcommunity.Seniors,ifselected,mayonlyserveasanassistantfor one(1)semester(05credit) Optionsare:

ScienceLabAssistant:

ThisstudentwillworkunderthedirectsupervisionoftheUpperSchoolscienceteachersanddosuch tasksasinventorysciencelaboratoryequipment,setupscienceclasslabswiththeteacher,cleanup suppliesaftertheconclusionofclasslabs

StudioArtAssistant:

Thisstudentwillworkdirectlywiththeartteachersanddosuchtasksashelporganizeandcleanupart rooms,setupartprojectsforclasses,inventoryartsuppliesforartteachers

LeadershipAssistant:

ThisstudentwillworkdirectlywiththeAssociateDirectoroftheUpperSchoolandperformtasksin supportofstudentlifesuchasorganizingles,settingupspacesforactivities,andotherduties

WithdrawalfromaCourse

Astudentmaydropacourseduringthersttwoweeksoftheterm.Astudentenrolledinacoursemustremain inthecourseasofthesecondweekofthesemester.Anywithdrawalfromacoursemustgothroughthe AcademicandCollegeCounselingoceinconsultationwiththeteacheroftheclass.

Mathematics

Themathematicscurriculumfosterscompetencyandunderstandingofthecomputingandthinkingskills necessarytofunctioninarapidlychangingtechnologicalsocietywhilefosteringcuriosityandlearningby discovery.Inadditiontolearningthefundamentalsofalgebra,geometry,trigonometry,probability,statisticsand calculus,eachstudentdevelopsherabilitiesinanalysis,precision,logic,criticalthinkingandproblemsolving.

TheMathematicsDepartmentoersavarietyofclassestoaccommodatedierentlevelsofabilityand instructionalneeds.Allcoursesarecollegepreparatorylevel.Themethodofinstructionincorporatesthe CommonCoreStandardsforMathematicalPracticethroughhandsonactivities,theuseoftechnology,and increasedattentiontomodelingandproblem-solvingskills.

Science&Technology

Sciencecoursesaredesignedtomeettheneedsoftoday’stechnicalandsocietaladvancements.Studentsusethe scienticmethodtoobtaininformationthroughinquiryandinvestigationandtheintegrationoftechnology. GoalOneofSacredHearteducationisto"educatetoapersonalandactivefaithinGod"Bycreatingasafeand welcomingenvironment,weinviteeachstudenttoexploreherpersonalrelationshipwithGodandgrowin communitywithothers.WewelcomefamiliesofallfaithswhosevaluesarecompatiblewiththoseofSacred Hearteducation.TheTheologycurriculumawakensstudentstothecallforsocialjusticeandengagesthemin dialogueaboutvariousreligioustraditions,scripture,andmoral/ethicalquestions.Coursesaregroundedinthe HeartofJesusandthroughthelensoftheGospels,andstudentswillexplorethescriptures,investigateCatholic moraltheologyandsocialjustice,compareandcontrastthefaithtraditionsoftheworld,anddevelopherown understandingofandpersonalrelationshipwithGod.Thetheologycurriculumseekstochallengestudentsto dialogue,study, thinkcritically,takeaction,andcontemplatehowtolivetheirfaithinawaythatisboth personalandSacredHeart Thespiritualjourneyistransformationalanduniquetoeachstudent,andemphasis isplacedonwhatitmeanstobeachildoftheSacredHeart,theimportanceofknowingyourselfandyour relationshipwithGod.
