DIPLOMAREQUIREMENTS

InordertobeawardedadiplomafromtheAcademyoftheSacredHeart,astudentmust satisfactorilycompletethefollowingprogramofcourses.Studentsmustbeinattendanceforfour (4)years(considerationswillbemadefortransferstudents).Onehalf(0.5)creditisgrantedforthe successfulcompletionofone-semestercoursesandonecredit(1)isgrantedforthesuccessful completionofafullyearofcoursework.Thechartbelowrepresentstheminimumgraduation requirements.Anyvariations(suchason-lineorsummerschoolclassestakenforcredit),mustbe pre-approvedbytheAcademicDepartment,CollegeCounselorandtheDirectoroftheUpper School

Eachspring,students(currentGrades9-11)plantheirscheduleforthenextyearwiththeirparentsand withinputandguidancefromtheirteachers,CollegeCounselorandUpperSchoolAdministration. Parents mustsignthecourseregistration. Oncetheschoolyearhasbegun,studentshaveanAdd/Dropperiodto modifytheirscheduleswithoutitbeingnotedontheirrecords.Enteringintotheninthgrade,astudent's scheduleisdesignedbytheUpperSchoolleadershipandcounselingteamandafterconsiderationofherhigh schoolplacementtestscores,prolereportsfromhermiddleschool,andinputfromthestudentandfamily.

WithdrawalfromaCourse

Astudentmaydropacourseduringthersttwoweeksoftheterm.Astudentenrolledinacoursemust remaininthecourseasofthesecondweekofthesemester.Anywithdrawalfromacoursemustgothrough theAcademicandCollegeCounselingoceinconsultationwiththeteacheroftheclass

Ifastudentneedstorepeatacourseduetoafailinggrade,shewillneedtoremediatethatgradeduringthe followingsummerandrecoverthecredittowardgraduation.Thismustbedonewithpriorapprovalofthe DirectorofUpperSchoolandCollegeCounselor. Inthecaseofcoursesneededtoremediatework previouslydoneatSacredHeart,theocialtranscriptretainsthelistingoftheoriginalcourse,withthe originalgradeandremainsapartofhergradepointaverage AswithanycoursetakenoutsideofAcademy oftheSacredHeart,thesubsequentcourse,whereitwastaken,andthegradeforworkinthatcoursewill alsobelistedonthetranscript.

Incomplete

Allstudentsareencouragedtodevelopsoundstudyandlearninghabits.InaSacredHeartschool, homeworkisusedtopromoteself-discipline,responsibilityanddecision-making,whichareallimportant partsofGoalV Homeworkreinforcestheskillslearnedinthecourseandshouldadvancethecourse content QualityhomeworkisanessentialcomponentofallAcademyoftheSacredHeartUpperSchool courses. SeniorIndependentResearchProject

SeniorsattheAcademyoftheSacredHeartwithadesiretoexploreareasofinterestnotrepresentedinthe curriculummaysubmitaproposaltotheAcademicandCollegeCounselor foraSeniorIndependent Project(SIP)duringthecourserequestprocess TheSIPallowsaseniortodemonstrateherintereststhrough aspecializedprojectandculminateinaresearchproject,performance,orothersignicantworkthatthe seniorwoulddesignandpresent.AfacultymemberwouldactasasupervisingmentorandevaluatetheSIP attheendoftheterm Onehalfcredit(05)willbeawardedatthediscretionofthefacultymentor A maximumof05creditsinthesenioryearmaybeearnedthroughtheSIP AgradeofPass/Failwillbeissued fortheSIPandwillnotbecalculatedintotheGPA. ScienceLabAssistant:

ThisstudentwillworkunderthedirectsupervisionoftheUpperSchoolscienceteachersanddo suchtasksasinventorysciencelaboratoryequipment,setupscienceclasslabswiththeteacher,clean upsuppliesaftertheconclusionofclasslabs.

StudioArtAssistant:

Thisstudentwillworkdirectlywiththeartteachersanddosuchtasksashelporganizeandcleanup artrooms,setupartprojectsforclasses,inventoryartsuppliesforartteachers

LeadershipAssistant:

ThisstudentwillworkdirectlywiththeAssociateDirectoroftheUpperSchoolandperformtasks insupportofstudentlifesuchasorganizingles,settingupspacesforactivities,andotherduties.

ASHWorksShopAssistant

StudentswillassistyoungerstudentsinanotherASHWorksclassbyhelpingthemlearnnewskills andcompletetheirprojects. ThisclassrequiresinstructorapprovalandpreviousASHWorksclass experience.

Inthisadvancedensemble,studentsdeveloppropervocaltechniquethroughrehearsalofavarietyofensemble music,includingsacredandsecularselections Inaddition,studentsstrengthentheirmusicsight-readingand theoryskillsandreviewmusichistoryasitrelatestotheliteraturebeingstudiedinclass.Studentswillsingfor twoliturgiesandoneformalconcerteachsemester,aswellasoptionalperformanceopportunities.Thiscourse mayberepeated.

InstrumentalEnsemble-Grades9-12(0.5credit)

Thisuniquecourse,cateringtothestudentwhoalreadyplaysamusicalinstrument,willhonetheskillsofmore accomplishedmusicians.Thereisacontractandafeeof$50fortheuseofawindinstrument.Studentswho currentlyplayaninstrumentwillspendclasstimeworkingonensembleorsolomusictobeperformedatschool liturgies,prayerservices,sportingevents,specialassembliesandconcertsthroughouttheyear Thiscoursemay berepeated.

MusicoftheHeart-Grades9-12(0.5credit)

Thisisaone-semestercoursethatwillintroducestudentstothefundamentalsofenjoyingmusicand participatinginanensemble Participatinginmusicalgroupspositivelyimpactsstudents’social-emotional well-beingandacademicsuccess. Studentscanchoosetoplayaninstrument,singordoboth.
