Home Improvements Make your new home uniquely ‘yours’ No matter how large or small, a home improvement project can give you the look and feel you desire for your unique living environment. Fortunately, there are many thriving, successful businesses in our area that specialize in making your vision a reality. Large jobs may require the use of a general contractor to manage all the aspects of the project, including subcontractors, permits and inspections. It might also involve the use of an architect to design the home, ad-
dition or a major renovation. Many times, homeowners hire specialty contractors such as roofing, flooring, painting, or restoration specialists. HELPFUL TIPS The Federal Trade Commission offers some helpful tips: Check with friends, neighbors, or co-workers who’ve used a contractor. Look at their work and inquire about their experience. Find out how long the company has been in business. An established company will have a record and reputation. A contractor should be able to give you names, addresses, and phone numbers of at least three clients with projects like yours. Check for qualifications, like licensing. Get written estimates and ask for an explanation of the costs. Most cities require permits for building projects, even for simple jobs. Choose a contractor familiar with the local permitting process.
