Avoid common mistakes Setting your deductible In general, the higher the deductible, the lower the cost for the policy. When choosing a deductible, think about how much you can afford to pay if your property is damaged. Filing small claims may affect how much you pay for insurance later. Talk to your agent to find a good balance. Not having adequate insurance If your house or car is damaged and you don’t have enough coverage, you’ll pay more of the repair costs. Think about how much you need to replace the contents of your house, your jewelry, and other valuables. “Make sure and review your insurance coverages with your agent at least yearly. This will save you a lot of headaches in the long run,” said Patrice Davison, president of Davison Insurance Agency of Boerne. Not having your home insured for enough and it burns to the ground, or not having high enough limits on your auto policy in case of a bad accident, are situations that can be avoided according to Davison. “Liens can be placed on your home and more, including garnishment of your wages, if you really injured someone in an accident.” Comprehensive coverage pays if your car is stolen or damaged by something other than an accident. Gap insurance helps pay the difference between your car’s value and the amount you owe. Ask your agent which coverage is in your best interest. If your car is older and paid off, you may not need collision and comprehensive coverages. Not telling your family about your life insurance If you have a policy, tell your family and give them a copy. They’ll need to know the company name and policy number to file a claim.

Home Improvements Make your new home uniquely ‘yours’ No matter how large or small, a home improvement project can give you the look and feel you desire for your unique living environment. Fortunately, there are many thriving, successful businesses in our area that specialize in making your vision a reality. Large jobs may require the use of a general contractor to manage all the aspects of the project, including subcontractors, permits and inspections. It might also involve the use of an architect to design the home, ad-

dition or a major renovation. Many times, homeowners hire specialty contractors such as roofing, flooring, painting, or restoration specialists. HELPFUL TIPS The Federal Trade Commission offers some helpful tips: Check with friends, neighbors, or co-workers who’ve used a contractor. Look at their work and inquire about their experience. Find out how long the company has been in business. An established company will have a record and reputation. A contractor should be able to give you names, addresses, and phone numbers of at least three clients with projects like yours. Check for qualifications, like licensing. Get written estimates and ask for an explanation of the costs. Most cities require permits for building projects, even for simple jobs. Choose a contractor familiar with the local permitting process.

Medical Finding a Primary Care Provider for you and your family Babies and children are not just small adults—their healthcare needs are different. However, as a family it is important to schedule your annual wellness visit with your healthcare provider to learn more about the best ways to take care of your health. As you age and your children develop a healthcare provider is essential for routine care as well as illnesses or injuries. What care does a primary care provider give? Providers care for children and adults for annual exams, check-ups and to ensure you are maintaining overall health. As you are looking for a primary care provider, consider a provider or location that offers same day appointments and is near your place of work or home. Also, research if the practice is connected to a hospital or health care system in case emergencies arise. Services provided: • Well child care/ Annual wellness exams • Preventive health including immunizations and screening • Support and Televisits • Health Education • Guidance for parents, adults and caregivers • Care for illnesses and injuries • Referrals to specialists as needed 24 Summer 2021 Relocation & Newcomers’ Guide

Making the most of your visit: The following tips will help ensure you are prepared when you have your annual wellness visit. • Write down your questions in advance. Writing your questions in advance this helps ensure you don’t forget to mention something important. • Bring someone with you. You can ask a loved one to sit in on the visit with you. Your friend or relative can serve as an advocate. Your friend or family member may have questions or observations that can help you get the best medical care. • Bring your health records. Bring copies of personal health records. This is important if this is your first visit or if it’s been a while since you saw this healthcare provider. Let your provider know about any other healthcare providers you see. You might also want to bring information about the health of your close family members. Certain diseases and con-

ditions run in families. For example, if a brother, sister, parent, or adult child has been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, your provider may want to add that information to your file. • Bring a list of your medicines and supplements. Let your healthcare provider know what medicines you and your family take each day. Make sure to include vitamins, herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies, teas, supplements, and prescription medicines from all providers you see. If it’s too much for you to write down, bring them all in a bag to show the provider.

are many things to consider from training and experience to office hours and routines. When choosing someone for you or your family, look to how healthcare is supposed to feel.

Choosing a provider is an important decision, no matter your age. There

In An Emergency Urgent care Urgent care center physicians, assistants and nurse practitioners provide care for a great range of conditions, including performing x-rays. According to the Cleveland Clinic, an urgent care center is designed to handle conditions that are not life-threatening, but should be treated within 24 hours. These include sprains and strains, sinus infections, ear infections, allergies, especially those that get worse during certain seasons, minor cuts and burns, headaches and dizziness. Check to make sure the urgent care center is covered by your health insurance plan. Dental care for kids FOR BABIES Wipe gums twice a day with a soft, clean cloth daily after the first feeding and right before bed to wipe away bacteria and sugars that can cause cavities. When teeth come in, start brushing twice a day with a soft, small bristed toothbrush and plain water. Visit the dentist by your baby’s first birthday to spot signs of problems early. For children younger than 2, consult first with your dentist regarding the use of fluoride toothpaste. FOR CHILDREN Brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. If younger than 6, watch them brush and help them until they have good brushing skills.

Around the County Kendall County is named for George Wilkins Kendall, a celebrated journalist, war correspondent, and sheepman who is largely credited with introducing the sheep industry to Texas. The county would be named for him in the late 1850s. He would later die in Boerne, and he is buried in the Boerne Cemetery. The county is home not only to Boerne, the county seat, but also to several other towns that include Bergheim, Sisterdale, Comfort, Waring, Welfare, Kendalia, and parts of Fair Oaks Ranch. Each of these towns – most of them unincorporated – have their own distinctive feel. Several award-winning restaurants and wineries are in the county, along with several retail stores, saloons, music venues, and more. The Old Tunnel State Park is located between Comfort and Fredericksburg and is known for its emergence of Mexican free-tailed bats during the season (May-October). The park is open year-round for wildlife viewing, hiking and more.

Several of these areas especially – Comfort – have B&Bs and lodging, and many are located near the Guadalupe River and have opportunities for tubing and river access. NEARBY NEIGHBORS The drive around the Texas Hill Country is gorgeous, and while we are partial to Kendall County, you may want to explore a little further while becoming acquainted with your new home in the area.
