FRONTIER DAY CELEBRATE POTTSBORO’S HISTORY
Each year on the last Saturday in September, the town of Pottsboro comes alive with the sights, sounds, and spirit of Frontier Day — a celebration rooted in local history and strong community traditions. This much-anticipated event pays tribute to the historic Shawnee Trail, a vital route in the 1850s that once carried cattle drives from the Red River down to Dallas. While many early pioneers passed through the area, others settled and helped build the foundations of Pottsboro. Although the cattle drives ended in the 1870s, their legacy continues through this vibrant annual gathering.
This year’s festivities will be held on Saturday, September 27th at Friendship Park, with activities kicking off at 9:00 AM. The day begins with a colorful parade that starts just west of the park on Highway 120 and ends within the park grounds. Thanks to generous local sponsors, the event
welcomes more than 7,000 visitors each year, making it one of the area’s biggest community celebrations.
Frontier Day offers something for everyone. Attendees can explore a wide array of local food and craft vendors, showcasing everything from handmade goods and seasonal décor to delicious festival favorites. Kids will enjoy games, inflatables, and hands-on activities, while history buffs can appreciate displays highlighting the town’s pioneer roots. Whether you’re a returning guest or discovering Pottsboro for the first time, Frontier Day promises a fun, familyfriendly atmosphere and a chance to connect with the community while celebrating its rich past.

Ursa has already been a great asset to our agency by locating drugs, patrolling the school campuses and interacting with citizens in our community. Since joining us, Ursa has also been deployed multiple times with some federal agencies and regional criminal interdiction units, resulting in the location and seizure of narcotics. NORTH TEXAS REGIONAL AIRPORT
North Texas Regional Airport, NTRA, serves as an economic engine for the region helping to drive growth in the area while accommodating the increasing number of visitors to the North Texas/ Lake Texoma area. With more than 1,400 acres, NTRA’s campus is larger than Love Field.
The airport is served by excellent roadway access including State Highway 289 which provides access to development opportunities on the airport’s west side. The airport’s most notable asset is its 9,000-foot-long runway which is 150feet wide and includes an Instrument Landing System (ILS) precision instrument approach allowing for operations under adverse weather conditions.
related to fighting wildfires in Texas. The airport is home to 152 based aircraft including 11 business jets and 27 multi-engine aircraft. There are currently 79 hangars encompassing 562,525 square feet on the airport.
In 2024, the airport had over 87,000 operations up from nearly 60,000 in 2023. Fuel sales have also dramatically increased in the last few years, nearly doubling from 2020 to 2024.
"North Texas Regional Airport serves as an economic engine for the region, helping to drive growth while accommodating the increasing number of visitors to the North Texas/Lake Texoma area."
Current activity at NTRA includes operations associated with pilot training, business and corporate travel, tourism serving the Lake Texoma region, and aircraft training
Currently, NTRA is classified as a Regional General Aviation Airport by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its role in supporting the regional economy and connecting communities to statewide and interstate markets.
In order to move from Regional General Aviation to a National General Aviation Airport, thus securing NTRA more federal funding, the airport is undergoing a $1.4 million taxi-lane expansion along with a $4 million lighting upgrade to the runway in August, 2024.
Finally, Rise Aviation plans to begin construction of nearly 50,000 square feet of new hangar space later this year.
CITY OF POTTSBORO: PLANNING SMART. GROWING STRONG.
As North Texas, and particularly Pottsboro, anticipates significant population and business ≠growth, the city is proactively working on various initiatives to upgrade facilities and expand capabilities. These efforts are aimed at accommodating the expected surge in development while ensuring sustainable growth and quality of life for residents.
Currently, the city is in the process of securing funding for a community development plan. This plan will serve as a strategic roadmap, guiding and focusing efforts to effectively manage the anticipated growth. By carefully planning and coordinating development initiatives, the city aims to address infrastructure needs, enhance services, and support economic vitality.
A key aspect of Pottsboro’s infrastructure upgrade includes the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant. This expansion project is designed to accommodate growth for the next four decades, ensuring that the city can handle increased demand while maintaining environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the acquisition of adjoining
property will facilitate even further expansion, providing flexibility for future needs.
In addition to wastewater management, Pottsboro is actively pursuing additional groundwater sources to reduce dependence on water purchased from Denison. Recognizing the critical importance of access to clean and plentiful water, the city is taking proactive steps to secure sustainable water resources for its residents.
Moreover, Pottsboro is investing in upgrading physical infrastructure and securing new facilities for administration and public safety. These enhancements are essential for supporting the growing community’s needs and ensuring efficient service delivery.
Overall, the City of Pottsboro is strategically positioning itself to respond to growth in an orderly, efficient, and financially responsible manner. By prioritizing infrastructure upgrades, planning for sustainability, and fostering economic development, Pottsboro is laying the groundwork for a prosperous and resilient future.
LOCAL AREA HOUSES OF WORSHIP
There are five churches that cooperate together in Pottsboro. The Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance is made up of Preston Community Church, Lakeway Methodist Church, Georgetown Baptist Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church and Hagerman Baptist Church.
These churches work throughout the year serving the community in a multitude of ways. In the spring, the Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance has an event called “We Gather Together”. On that day, all the churches invade local grocery stores and fill several trailers with nonperishable food items to help stock the shelves of the Resale Barn and Visions of Sugarplums. These two non-profit organizations help feed families in Grayson County.
The churches of the Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance support our local school district by providing scholarships to graduating seniors each year. Whatever the need, the churches of the Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance help by showing the love of Christ.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY
Pottsboro is home to a number of service-minded individuals who have a plethora of area service organization options to get involved with and give back.
Keep Pottsboro Beautiful provides opportunities to help clean up the city. Other local interest groups include Pink Impact Foundation, Pottsboro Senior Center, the Pottsboro ISD Education Foundation and the Locust Volunteer Fire Department.
Jerry Peddicord, one of the founders of the Keep Pottsboro Beautiful commission, believed it was his job to serve his country and keep it in good shape for future generations. When he moved to Pottsboro as a retiree, he put action behind those words. Peddicord turned 100 in December 2018 and was still working with service organizations to keep community alive in Pottsboro.
“When you have reached a certain point, people often think that they have done their part,” Peddicord said at his 2018 birthday party. “But I want to see the spirit of community and the spirit of camaraderie and all that goes with it. All too often, towns small like Pottsboro will let down and things will go to pot. I would hate to see that.”
There are local chapters of a number of national organizations including the Lions Club, Rotary International, United Way of Grayson County and Goodwill Industries.
For individuals with a desire to help people achieve a healthier living, the Texoma Health Foundation and Reba’s Ranch House provide services for a broad range of health issues.
For the service-minded individual with a military background there is the American Legion M.I.A. Post, VFW Lakeside Post and Vietnam Veterans of America.
Anyone seeking to get involved will find plenty of opportunities with these family, community and civic organizations.

The school district is driven in providing the highest level of education for all of its students. This is evident by the award winning programs, academic recognitions, and exemplary facilities. Even though the school district has grown over the past few years, the campuses still keep a small-town, family-friendly atmosphere with high expectations like our town of Pottsboro.
With strong advanced placement and dual credit programs and school campuses receiving the highest ratings by the Texas Education Agency, Pottsboro ISD is raising the bar for academic excellence.
Pottsboro Independent School District is a Class 3A district with an enrollment of approximately 1,420 students. The district comprises a total of three campuses: Elementary (PK-4th grades), Middle School (5th - 8th grades), and High School (9th-12th grades).
Future Quest
Pottsboro ISD strives to provide opportunities for students to explore their interests and be prepared for the next step beyond high school. A group of PISD College and Career Guidance advisors spend two days in the Spring semester meeting with each eighth grade student and parents to design a four-year plan that meets the students’ goals in high school and beyond. With numerous Advanced Placement courses, Career and Technical Education pathways which include courses that lead to Nationally recognized certifications, special education program, dyslexia program, gifted and talented program, dynamic fine arts, and athletic programs that continue to compete with the best in Texas, Pottsboro ISD is providing opportunities for students to excel during school and beyond.
21st Century Learning
Pottsboro ISD believes that people are empowered by their independent use of computers and other technologies and are united by their opportunities to share resources and communicate in a global community. We recognize the increasing need to know more, to know how to access information, to understand, and communicate. By including technology as a component of a well-balanced K-12 program, PISD provides students with the opportunity to develop life-long learning skills through the use of technology.
By using technology as a tool, teachers, administrators, and support staff are more efficient and effective in facilitating and managing the learning environment. Pottsboro ISD maintains a technology strategy that fully integrates district curriculum and professional needs and is proud to have every child in grades K-12 with access to a digital device. This will provide another tool to ignite learning in the eyes of a child.
Family And Community
Parent and community involvement play a vital role in the success of Pottsboro ISD. This is evident through the district’s volunteer program that assists schools with tutoring students as well as the Watch Dog program that supports the district’s goal of a secure and safe learning environment. The PTA/PTO’s are very strong and raise additional monies to supplement a campus budget. Pottsboro ISD was excited to support the establishment of the Pottsboro ISD Education Foundation in March of 2013. The Foundation has 22 Board of Directors and an Executive Director who obtain funding from outside sources to enhance the classroom by providing grants for innovative and creative teaching ideas. The Board of Directors is comprised of a cross-section of the community bringing expertise from all areas. Since inception, the PISD Education Foundation has raised approximately $400,000 to enhance the classrooms. The school district has a strong partnership with other key community organizations that play such a vital role in the success of our students. Community organizations have generously donated money, provided food and snacks for kids in need, established leadership and scholarship opportunities for students, and been instrumental in providing technology resources, books, and reading programs for our kids.
Like Pottsboro itself, community plays an important role in the schools, and the school district believes, “It Takes a Community to Build a Cardinal.” The district welcomes family and community members to the campuses and invites their input to improve all students’ educational experiences.
“Pottsboro ISD is raising the bar for academic excellence while preserving a small-town, family-friendly atmosphere rooted in community values.”

GOLF COURSES SWING INTO POTTSBORO
Golf came to Texas early in the last century. Houston had a course in 1906 and the Houston Country Club formed in 1908, while the Dallas Country Club had a course in 1912. Sherman’s Woodlawn Country Club opened a course in 1916, and in Denison, the Rod and Gun Club added a nine hole course to their property in 1922. These first nine became the back nine when the course expanded to 18-holes in 1978.
TANGLEWOOD
The Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro features a 7,000-yard course, with fairways of Bermuda grass and greens of Diamond Zoysia. Tanglewood was the first facility in the country to install this eco-friendly Zoysia grass hybrid. Created by a team at Texas A&M University, the grass thrives in the dry heat of Texas summers and provides golfers a great putting surface year-round. The Tanglewood course is open for membership and daily fee players. It also features the 19th Hole Grill and Bar.
STONE CREEK
Stone Creek Golf Club arrived in Grayson County in 2007. The 7,428-yard, 18-hole course was designed by Cal Olson. “We like to think of Stone Creek as the Cadillac of golf courses in Grayson County,” said General Manager Aaron Reynolds. “It’s a daily fee course that offers memberships as well, so it’s just a matter of how much someone wants to play and what matches their goals.”

Also known as Ball Park, the facility is home to the Pottsboro Youth Association, which hosts baseball and softball seasons for more than 350 children of all ages.

Boot Scootin’ Ball
25 YEARS OF COMMUNITY IMPACT
On October 25, 2025, the Boot Scootin’ Ball will celebrate its 25th anniversary, marking a quartercentury of dedicated community support for Preston Volunteer Emergency Services (PVES). What began as a grassroots effort to improve emergency medical care has grown into one of Grayson County’s most impactful fundraising events.
The vision for the Ball was born in the late 1990s after the tragic loss of two local residents due to delays in ambulance response. Determined to create change, Dottie Brooke and Anne Miller helped launch the initial fundraising efforts, which included craft sales and golf tournaments. Then, in 2001, Sandy MacGowan organized the first Boot Scootin’ Ball at Bar-K-R Ranch. Despite a last-minute venue change due to weather and unexpected challenges, the event raised $25,000 and set the foundation for a lasting tradition.
Thanks to the continued generosity and hard work of volunteers, committee members, sponsors, and donors, the Boot Scootin’ Ball has raised over $3 million in support of PVES. These funds have provided ambulances, a fire rescue truck, life-saving equipment, training, and the ability to staff paramedics and EMTs around the clock.
The event’s impact extends beyond emergency response. It also helped establish the Douglas Q. Martin Memorial Scholarship at Grayson College, which ensures continued EMT and paramedic training for future generations.
The Boot Scootin’ Ball stands as a powerful example of what a united and compassionate community can achieve. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who has contributed over the years and look forward to celebrating this milestone together.

At almost 12,000 acres, the Refuge provides habitat for more than 340 species of birds and a large variety of native wildlife. A Wildlife Drive, five hiking trails, access to Lake Texoma for fishing, wildlife photography opportunities, and free nature programs and tram tours make this a nature lovers paradise.
The Refuge Visitor Center offers information, maps, hiking trail guides, and bird and wildlife identification leaflets. Ask about free guided tram tours, or find out what’s on schedule for the next Second Saturday Nature Program or The Refuge Rocks offered on and 2nd and 3rd Saturdays year-round.

Long-legged Great Blue Herons are present year-round and don’t forget to keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, or bobcats roaming Refuge forests and fields.
Three Day Use Areas offer picnic tables and restroom facilities. Fishing is allowed year-round in Lake Texoma waters, while boating and limited hunting are also welcome in designated areas and seasons. During spring and fall bird migration, thousands of American White Pelicans and dozens of different shorebird species stop at the Refuge to refuel along their journeys. Beginning in November, 10,000+ Snow and Ross’ geese browse on winter wheat planted in Refuge fields.

KEEPING PRECINCT 4 ROLLING COMMISSIONER MATT HARDENBURG
Over lunch with Grayson County Commissioner Matt Hardenburg, we got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to manage one of the county’s largest and busiest precincts. Precinct 4 stretches from the Red River Bridge on Highway 75 to the Cooke County line and includes Pottsboro, Preston Peninsula, Locust, Gordonville, Sherwood Shores, and northwestern areas of Denison and Sherman.
“We’re focused on smart planning, strong partnerships, and making sure every project serves the people who live here.”
With over 350 miles of roads, roughly the distance from Pottsboro to Amarillo, Matt’s crew of just 15 men work nonstop to handle everything from pothole repairs and storm cleanup to large-scale road rebuilding. This year’s focus has been on addressing roads damaged by time and weather using chip-and-seal resurfacing. To maximize the budget, the team secured 3,000 tons of chip rock ahead of a major price increase.
Matt is also managing a 39 million dollar expansion of the Grayson County Jail, which began in late 2024 and is projected to wrap up by the end of 2026. The expansion will add 166 beds to relieve overcrowding. He is also overseeing the relocation of the adult probation office to a larger facility on Texoma Parkway, which will improve access and reduce congestion near the courthouse. The new location will provide easier parking and better service to the hundreds of people who rely on it each week.
As the county continues to grow, Matt’s office reviews subdivision plats almost weekly and works with developers, engineers, and inspectors to ensure infrastructure meets county standards. He also maintains strong working relationships with surrounding cities like Pottsboro, Sherman, and Denison through interlocal agreements that support shared repairs and regional planning.
A lifelong Pottsboro resident, Matt lives on family land that’s been in his family since the 1940s. He holds a degree in Agricultural Services and Development from Tarleton State University and helps with the family’s cattle and hay operation when he’s not managing county business. He and his wife have two children and remain deeply rooted in the Pottsboro community. Known for his hands-on leadership and open-door approach, Matt has earned the trust of local residents.
