Fayetteville enjoys celebrating Halloween, and trick-ortreaters make their way around town and especially around the Square, as merchants and local citizens turn out to host the evening’s parade of young children and their costumes. The event is held on every year on October 31 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Pickin’ Park photo courtesy Emil Knodell, Fayetteville Vintage Gallery. Pickin’ Park is held on the Square in Fayetteville the second Saturday of every month and is free to both players and listeners alike. Everyone is welcome to come out and bring a lawn chair. Music is played throughout the Square all day long and players with any experience level are welcome to join in.

Insuring and EnrichingLives

SPJST celebrates 124 years of fraternalism in 2021

Organized in 1897 by Texans of Czech ancestry, SPJST’s mission statement is simple: “Insuring and Enriching Lives.”

The SPJST’s first home office was located in Fayetteville. The central figure in administering the affairs of the Society, Secretary J.R. Kubena, operated his business just off the main square. Until his death in 1938, Kubena administered the affairs of the SPJST out of a single room in his general store. A civic leader with a keen sense of obligation, J.R. Kubena served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives and as mayor of Fayetteville. In 2018, the SPJST Supreme Lodge, based in Temple since 1953, renamed SPJST’s picturesque 182-acre camp in northern Fayette County “Camp Kubena” to honor the pioneering spirit of J.R. Kubena.

SPJST is built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. With assets of approximately $245 million and more than $1 billion of life insurance in force, the SPJST continues to fulfill its financial obligations to its members and keep pace with the life insurance industry. Locally and across the state, generations of SPJST members have worked diligently to establish the SPJST’s reputation as a proactive fraternal organization, sponsoring and supporting a wide range of community services and family oriented activities. SPJST member benefits include a wide range of life insurance products as well as annuities and IRAs. SPJST also offers a wonderful youth program, summer camping experience and scholarships. Additionally, the Society offers member benefits that save money and other valuable services: SPJST Perkspot, Freshbenies, Travel Insurance and Amazon Smile — are all recent additions to SPJST’s menu of noncontractual benefits. In 2021, there are approximately 40,000 SPJST members in 100 lodges throughout Texas. If you aren’t a member, now is your opportunity to join!
