Outstanding in the Field

Yonder Way Farm brings a better, more sustainable alternative to Fayetteville.

Growing from a simple desire to find a healthier way of life for their growing family, Jason and Lynsey Kramer left big city life in 2006, moving to the country to start Yonder Way Farm. By being good stewards of the land and raising animals free of confinement in a natural environment, the Kramers put a plan in place to re-establish the almost-lost art of grass farming as a way to simplify their life and be more connected as a family with their four daughters.

“We were both struggling with health issues,” said Lynsey. “It was not a good thing to be so young and unhealthy. We started eating better and changed the way we approached food in general. We had an opportunity to grow our own food on 120-acres, so we started homesteading with a vegetable garden, chickens and cows. My husband and I have always been very entrepreneurial and we quickly saw this new opportunity that was right in front of us. We started networking with people when we had a surplus of eggs or we were butchering a cow or pig; putting feelers out there if anyone was interested. Yonder Way Farm organically took off. We started selling direct to people and various delivery groups all over Houston and we still have a lot of these groups going today.”

A working farm is often glorified by many as peaceful, however the Kramers can testify that the farming way of life isn’t always simple or easy.

“When we were about four or five years into our business, I struggled with the fact that farming is unpredictable,” shared Lynsey. “You never know what the day has for you on a farm. I used to be very planned, structured and organized. It quickly became apparent that I would have to loosen up in those areas. I remember early on when we were still in Brenham, three of my girls were toddlers and Jason was still working at the fire department in Houston, and I was bound and determined to have a garage sale. Right in the middle of the sale, I looked out and saw, clear as day, our bull out in the middle of Highway 105. Then I saw our sheep had gotten out because the fence was down. I handed my baby off to a woman shopping at the sale, put on my boots, and ran out to get help from our neighbors on horseback to get the bull back in and to round up the sheep with the dogs. Looking back now, it was very funny, but at the time, it was like ‘oh my goodness, this is the worst timing for anything like this to happen.’ With thousands of animals on acreage, I quickly learned to hold plans more loosely and be a little more flexible.”

Customers can place their food order for pick up from Yonder Way Farm and soon will be able to shop at their new location in the historic Gulf station in downtown Fayetteville.

“Our little store on the farm nearly tripled in business after March 2020 and it got a little crazy,” added Lynsey. “It got our wheels turning looking for a space off the farm. We toyed with the idea of where to put our brick and mortar, and we felt very drawn to Fayetteville. We love to work with other farms and local growers. In addition to beef, pork and eggs, we work with a produce farm, an olive oil farm, we have an artesian baker bringing fresh bread every week; a wide variety of food. It’s a one-stop-shop farmers market for people in this area and beyond. We’re not just offering our own products because we love working with others in the community who are growing food and doing good things.”

Yonder Way Farm is located at 1055 South FM 1291 in Fayetteville and online at yonderwayfarm.com. Their new location in downtown Fayetteville is at 114 West Main Street. The Kramers are a full-time farming family who proudly grazes grass-fed beef, pastured pork and freerange chickens and eggs with a passion for providing sustainable and healthful meat, honoring each and every animal that they raise, mimicking nature as best as they can, and maintaining transparency with the farm community.
