More than the Money!
I have heard many business owners (usually in a bout of frustration) say things like: “I pay them so they should do their job and be grateful” or “I am doing them a favour by employing them”.
Why does a company employ people? Why is the business in business? What is the primary motive? Even if the response is customer focussed, the bottom line is likely to be ‘profit’ Indeed, a corporation is legally obliged to make profit for the stakeholders.
When money is the ultimate goal, then the terms of employment become transactional, e g company pays for employee’s time This, I would call a ‘single issue’ dynamic, i.e. “we employ you to do a particular job”. The problem with single issue dynamics can be seen in the results of negotiations The transaction becomes a ‘haggle’, where there is either a compromise or a win/lose outcome for acomp
How can we lift this into a win/win, where both parties are happy and getting what they want? The answer may go back to the ancient Greek
may go back to the ancient Greek philosophy of Aristotle’s Rhetoric Aristotle proposed that people are persuaded by Logos (e g rationale, evidence, numbers), Ethos (e g ethical, just, values based), and Pathos (e.g. emotion, happiness, satisfaction).
A simple ‘pay for work’ philosophy is rational (Logos) but it doesn’t engage Ethos or Pathos And I’m afraid that the company values and ethics are not enough! If all you want is work done, then carry on. However, if you want engaged, committed, dedicated staff who talk and think positively about the company who enjoy coming into work and will go the extra mile then, from their perspective, you will also need to prioritise Ethos (e.g. fairness, justice, sense of control) and Pathos (e.g. care, kindness, support)

Why Digital Projects So Often Disappoint
Many business leaders set out on digital projects with high hopes, only to watch costs creep up, timelines slip, and the promised benefits fail to appear It’s an all too common story: research suggests the majority of large-scale transformations miss their objectives
One of the top reasons for this is capability Without enough digital skills in-house, organisations can’t properly challenge suppliers or spot when work is drifting Another is focus Projects often try to tackle too much at once, layering AI, new systems, and process change simultaneously, which can make them really hard to control
The fix isn’t doubling down, it's gaining more clarity Start by defining the specific value you expect a project to
specific value you expect a project to create for customers, staff, or both Build the internal knowledge to ask sharper questions of your digital teams or partners And break work into smaller steps that deliver visible progress rather than waiting years for a single ‘big bang’
Digital transformation or development, especially with AI in the mix, will always be complex But with sharper objectives and stronger internal capability, businesses can turn projects from a source of frustration into a genuine driver of value

Positioning Part 2: Who Do You Serve Best?
When you try to appeal to everyone, you become memorable to no one. Yet most businesses resist narrowing their focus, fearing they’ll lose potential customers At networking events, this often leads to introductions that feel safe but forgettable The counterintuitive truth? Specificity creates more opportunities.
The Everyone Trap Generic claims like “we help businesses succeed” put you up against every other provider Prospects can’t see what makes you special, so they default to price comparisons or choose competitors with clearer messages
Why Specificity Wins Businesses with sharp positioning become the obvious choice for their ideal customers They command premium prices, attract quality referral

Local Expertise that Keeps Businesses Open
More than 60% of businesses never reopen after a major fire For restaurants, hotels, and commercial kitchens, the risk is even sharper cooking equipment is one of the leading causes of workplace fires in the UK A single incident can wipe out years of investment, jobs, and reputation overnight
That’s why kitchen fire suppression matters Ansul systems are designed specifically for this environment: detecting fire at source, suppressing it rapidly, and minimising damage so kitchens can get back to business Fires that might otherwise close a kitchen for weeks can instead be contained in minutes, reducing downtime and disruption Most importantly, suppression systems protect staff and customers, ensuring people remain safe while businesses remain open.
This year we made a conscious decision to keep that expertise local. Jeremy Harris, one of our technicians, has completed full Ansul training, giving him the skills to service these systems right here in the Gatwick Diamond For Jeremy, it’s been a huge step in his career broadening his technical expertise and building confidence in a highly specialised

Steel and Strategy: The Resilience of UK Industrial Buildings
Furthermore, unlike speculative residential schemes, industrial projects can often proceed with prelet or design-and-build agreements, offering clearer financial predictability and reduced risk
Although not initially considered, steel structures in construction can align with the modern trend to achieve sustainability goals. Given that the strength and structures can be demounted, recycled, or expanded with minimal waste, supporting circular economy principles is increasingly demanded by investors and planning authorities.
For businesses seeking operational efficiency and developers targeting long-term returns, steel provides not just a material advantage but a strategic one In the Gatwick Diamond, where transport infrastrcture
infrastructure, skilled labour, and economic growth intersect, industrial steel builds represent a forwardlooking investment: resilient, adaptable, and aligned with the evolving demands of the UK economy

Corporate Social Responsibility: a talent advantage for small businesses
Small businesses often struggle to attract and keep talented people Big firms can lure candidates with higher pay and plush perks – but SMEs can offer something just as powerful: purpose and real impact. This is where corporate social responsibility (CSR), mostly viewed as a social obligation, becomes a powerful strategic tool in the talent race
A study by the University of Sussex Business School shows how SMEs can use CSR to engage employees and
create lasting value Drawing on CSR case studies of small businesses in Northern Ireland, the study introduces a framework – called the Conceptual Model of Employee Engagement, CSR Implementation, and Value Creation – that captures how CSR has the greatest impact when employees co-create its strategies rather than being passive observers
The model outlines three stages of CSR integration in a business:
a Instrumental phase: CSR is led from the top – often to boost reputation or to meet compliance
b Political phase: Employees step in as co-creators, aligning personal and company values.
c Networked phase: CSR becomes part of everyday operations, with leaders, staff, and partners collaborating continuously

Why Partnership Beats Philanthropy
CSR isn’t about giving more; it’s about giving smarter
For years, corporate giving meant writing a cheque, hosting a fundraiser, and feeling you’d “done your bit ” But today, both businesses and charities are realising that philanthropy alone doesn’t hit the mark It’s partnership that really creates impact
Philanthropy is generous. Partnership is strategic When a business and charity come together sharing purpose, insight, and accountability everyone benefits Teams become more engaged, brands more trusted, and communities genuinely strengthened. It’s not about transactions; it’s about transformation
Having worked across both sectors, I’ve seen how powerful collaboration can be when built on trust and shared
ambition Whether it’s a joint project, a volunteering initiative, or a longterm CSR plan, success starts with both sides being ready to partner well
Cutting the Middleman: How Upskilling Keeps More Value in Your Business
In today’s fast-moving economy, continuous learning is no longer optional – it’s essential For business owners and professionals across the Gatwick Diamond, developing new skills has become central to staying competitive and resilient in times of uncertainty As industries evolve and costs rise exponentially, the ability to adapt and bring expertise in-house is
proving to be one of the smartest strategies for sustainable growth
As digital innovation accelerates, there is an increased belief that small and medium enterprises must and medium enterprises must outsource specialised work to remain ahead of the curve – but it doesn’t need to be this way Instead of relying on third rties for everything from web sign to software development, any are choosing to upskill and take ntrol of work themselves. Local lleges such as East Surrey College e a valuable go-to, offering flexible urses that provide a foundation for ilding in-house capacity
rhaps you're the owner of a small art-up, and you’re looking for counting, bookkeeping or Excel training
training to help support growth Or a larger employer who wants to support staff in learning more about resilience and wellbeing in the workplace? your local training providers offer a range of part-time courses which can be done in the evening fitting around work commitments Also, with a range of skilled tutors at their fingertips, it is possible to arrange bespoke training for your staff on a wide range of subjects They can be regular courses or one-off training.

Top technology firm teams up with top UK university researchers to tackle transportation’s biggest challenges
built an AI framework that could sift through the data, flag unusual station behaviour and explain its findings in plain terms for transit operators.
The team introduced a station classification system and leveraged machine learning models to explore station interactions With this, they could detect discrepancies between riders' declared intentions and their actual movements, enabling them to locate and quantify short ticketing behaviour without needing labelled data.
The researchers created a framework which allows transit agencies to identify high-risk stations and fraud types This can be utilised to deploy staff more effectively, reducing revenue loss and improving operational efficiency
On top of this, the team developed an unsupervised, multiexpert AI System which combined different anomaly detection methods This enabled them to identify distinct fraud behaviours and locations, for example ‘ghost stations’ which are stations with lots of entry only or exit only taps This pattern identification can help transit agencies implement short ticketing countermeasures
Cubic Transportation Systems’ collaboration with Imperial's AIDA Lab has proven how AI can be used to tackle these issues and help keep future journeys smooth, reliable and stress-free, offering a clear road ahead for innovation in the sector

The rise of Employee Ownership Trusts: a strategic succession route for UK owner‑managers
Over the past decade, Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) have evolved from a niche exit option into one of the most compelling succession strategies available to founder owned businesses in the UK. An EOT is a UK government-backed initiative designed to foster employee ownership by enabling business owners to sell a controlling interest in their company to an all-employee trust This structure means employees do not directly own shares, but the trust holds them for their collective benefit

The Future of Brand Identity: More Than a Logo
Brand identity is changing It’s no longer about creating a single logo and set of colours that stay fixed for years. Today, brands need to move,
Ginetta George
flex, and adapt across different platforms – from websites and social media channels to video and branded physical spaces.
The most effective brands are those that stay recognisable while having the freedom to grow and show different sides of who they are
Consistency still matters, but so does relevance The way your brand looks, sounds and behaves should make sense and reflect your business It should feel natural on a screen, at an event, or in conversation When each element of design, tone, imagery and video is cohesive, your brand feels more human, more connected and more real
The strongest brands don't just tell people who they are They create seamless experiences that people remember at every touchpoint. That
remember at every touchpoint That comes from clarity of purpose, thoughtful design and the confidence to evolve.
At Detail, we create brands designed to thrive in today’s world We start by defining a clear brand strategy that underpins the creative work The result is a memorable brand, wellstructured website and set of assets that are authentic to the business – a true reflection of who they are, giving them clarity and confidence across all platforms
The future of brand identity isn’t about replacing your logo - it’s about creating something that can adapt, grow and stay true to what makes your business distinct

The Value of Commercial Building Surveys
Buying a commercial property is a major investment Therefore, understanding its true condition before purchase is essential. A commercial building survey, often carried out as part of a pre-acquisition process, provides critical insight into a property’s structure, compliance, and future liabilities
Unlike a lender’s valuation, which protects only the bank, a building survey is designed to protect you. It highlights risks that could impact value, operational costs, or safety, ensuring you make a secure and informed decision
These surveys assess a wide range of elements. Structural integrity is reviewed, from foundations and roofing to walls, floors, and frames Building services such as electrics, plumbing, heating, and ventilation are tested for compliance and efficiency Fire safety, accessibility, and environmental issues, including the presence of asbestos or other hazardous materials, are also considered Finally, surveyors review documentation such as planning permissions and compliance records, gi
giving a clear picture of potential liabilities
The benefits are significant. A survey reduces financial risk by identifying urgent repairs It strengthens negotiations, as findings can be used to adjust the purchase price or request remedial work It also supports long-term planning, helping investors budget for future maintenance
Ultimately, a commercial building survey provides clarity and confidence By identifying hidden issues before purchase, it safeguards your investment and supports sound property decisions

Easy technology wins for 2025/2026
Running an SME has never been straightforward There’s pressure to control costs, keep customers happy, and stay ahead of competitors New technology can make that easier, but only if it’s simple, affordable and quick to implement With that in mind, here’s Spyrosoft’s round-up of the tech trends that will give SMEs the most practical wins in 2025–26 tea
1 Everyday automation
AI is already built into many of the tools you probably use. Features like automatic invoice reminders or meeting note summaries can quietly free up hours each week No big project required, just switch them on
2 Smarter security
Cyber threats increasingly target small firms Simple measures, like multi-factor authentication, automatic cloud backups and affordable managed security services, offer robust protection without major investment
3. Build what you need, fast Low-code platforms let you design custom apps, booking forms or staff rotas in days No coding knowledge required just drag, drop, and create what fits your business
4. Data you can actually use Modern dashboards bring live data together from sales, finance and marketing systems. That means realtime cashflow insights and customer trends you can act on immediately
5. Green tools that pay for themselves
Smart meters, energy-saving sensors and cloud-based systems reduce running costs while cutting emissions They also boost your credentials when pitching for contracts that demand sustainability
Our top tip: Start small. Pilot one tool, measure the results, then scale what works Technology should lighten the load, not add to it, and in 2025–26, the best tools are accessible to SMEs

Protecting Your New Intellectual Property
When your innovation starts taking shape, the next big question is: how do you stop someone else from copying it or walking away with it?
IP protection often gets overlooked in the rush to develop or launch. But if it’s not locked down early, you could lose control over the very thing you’ve invested in
Secure Ownership Before You Need To Defend It
We’ve seen businesses get caught out because patents weren’t filed in time, designs weren’t registered, or subcontractors didn’t assign ownership
That’s why Menzies helps clients tighten up their employment and contractor agreements from the start. Making sure the business, not the individual, owns what’s being created is key if you have plans to sell, license, or raise capital
Employment Rights Bill Update: Balancing Worker Protections with Business Growth
James Willis
We’re continuing to keep a close eye on the progress of the Employment Rights Bill as it makes its way through Parliament and towards becoming law The bill represents one of the most
most significant pieces of employment legislation in recent years, with the potential to reshape the relationship between employers and workers across the UK So, where have we got to so far?
The draft bill has recently completed its passage through the House of Lords, where peers debated and proposed a series of detailed amendments to the existing provisions The House of Commons will now review those suggested changes and determine whether they should be accepted, rejected, or further refined before the bill proceeds to its next stage
Given the recent reshuffle in Keir Starmer’s cabinet, there has been speculation that this could signal a speculation
shift in policy direction or even a softening of some of the bill’s more ambitious proposals However, the new Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Peter Kyle, has been quick to address such concerns In a statement issued by his department, he reaffirmed the Government’s pledge to deliver the “biggest upgrade” to workers’ rights in a generation
Despite these assurances, questions remain about how the Government will reconcile its pro-worker agenda with the need to foster business confidence and economic growth in an increasingly competitive global market
