WORLD-CLASS GEOLOGY

UNESCO Global Geoparks are exceptional areas around the world that feature geology of international significance. A visit to a geopark is not only beautiful and inspiring but also an opportunity to learn about the local nature and culture, as well as our planet’s geological history.

AN ARCHIPELAGO SHAPED BY CLIMATE CHANGE

Geopark The South Fyn Archipelago primarily tells the story of a global sea-level rise at the end of the last Ice Age and how ice and climate changes created the landscape that has shaped the area’s nature and culture for over 10,000 years.

55 ISLANDS AND ISLETS

This stunning landscape unfolds in and around the marvellous South Fyn Archipelago, which includes no fewer than 55 islands and islets in a submerged Ice Age landscape. Beneath the water, there are still numerous traces of forests and Stone Age settlements from before the sea rose, while on land, a distinctive natural and cultural history has emerged. Today, there are 228 geoparks across 49 countries, including three in Denmark: Geopark Odsherred, Geopark Vestjylland, and Geopark The South Fyn Archipelago.

GO ISLAND-HOPPING IN THE ARCHIPELAGO!

READY TO LEAVE EVERYDAY LIFE BEHIND?

Each island has its own charm and story, making them well worth exploring. The archipelago makes island-hopping easy,

whether with your own boat or the small ferries that regularly connect the islands.

Use the market towns as your base for adventure. From Svendborg, you can reach Skarø, Drejø, Ærø and Hjortø. From Faaborg, ferries head to Bjørnø, Lyø, Avernakø, and Ærø. From Rudkøbing, there are connections to Strynø and Ærø, and from Marstal on Ærø, you can travel to Birkholm.

3 SUGGESTIONS FOR ISLAND-HOPPING IN THE ARCHIPELAGO

Distances are short, and planning your own island-hopping adventure in the South Fyn Archipelago is easy – whether you travel by ferry or private boat. Each island has its own unique character, offering countless opportunities. Here are three great ideas to inspire your journey.

#1 SVENDBORG – DREJØ – SKARØ

Start your trip at the vibrant harbour in Svendborg and take the Højestene ferry to Drejø. There, you’ll find 4 kilometres of cycling routes, a small local museum, plus a café and farm

shops with local produce. Next, head to the stunning island of Skarø, famous for its summer festival and popular ice cream. You can easily stay overnight on either island.

#2 FAABORG – LYØ – AVERNAKØ

From Faaborg Harbour, take the Island-ferry to Lyø, home to a well-preserved village and classic countryside charm. Enjoy a delicious lunch before heading back on the ferry to Avernakø, where sea views surround you. Hire a bike to explore cafés, farm shops, and nature. Overnight stays are easy to arrange on both islands.

Island hopping to Drejø, photo: Amalie Hypolit

#3 RUDKØBING – STRYNØ – BIRKHOLM (ÆRØ)

From Rudkøbing Harbour, sail to Strynø, a cosy island perfect for cycling. Try paddleboarding or dive into the island’s cultural history. If you don’t plan to stay overnight, return to Rudkøbing and continue with the ÆrøXpressen to Marstal on Ærø. From there, take the small ferry Birkholmposten to Birkholm. This tiny island is the ultimate retreat. It’s so small that you can walk around it before the boat returns. Don’t forget to bring food and drinks!

TIPS FOR ISLAND-HOPPING

Book your ferry tickets well in advance, as departures are often fully booked during the summer season.

THE COLD THRILL

Overlooking the archipelago and the surrounding islands, winter bathing is a special experience that makes you feel part of the magnificent wintery landscape in South Fyn. Here, nature and people meet in a refreshing experience that strengthens both body and mind.

MEET THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES

When the temperature drops and the winter darkness descends, locals meet in winter bathing clubs along the coast in the South Fyn Archipelago. The community is an important part of the experience – and a reminder to never swim alone. Together, the cold thrill is safer and more fun, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and each other's company safely.

WINTER BATHING FOR YOU

Along the scenic coastline you'll find several popular winter bathing spots. In Svendborg, you can take an urban winter dip from the jetty at Christiansminde, where there are changing

facilities and views of the illuminated Svendborg, or at Færgegården Strand, which offers a fantastic view of Vindeby, Svendborgsundbroen and the Ærø ferry.

On Ærø, Dronningetrappen in Ærøskøbing is a favourite spot with direct access to the water and beautiful sunrises. At Kleven Havn in Ommel, you'll find a low bathing jetty and a hot tub that locals warm up in advance.

In Rudkøbing, Badeanstalten provides a safe environment for children with shallow water and bathing jetties. For a deeper dive, visit Bagenkop, where a bridge takes you directly into the deep harbour basin.

Faaborg offers four winter swimming spots: Klinten and Faaborg Havnebad, both close to the centre with views of the archipelago, while Horne Sommerland has a south-facing beach overlooking the sea. Between Faaborg and Svendborg is Nab Strand, a secluded sandy beach with a jetty and toilet.

GET WARM AND COSY HERE

After a cold dip in the archipelago, there are several coastal saunas where you can warm up and enjoy the beauty of nature. At Faaborg Havnebad you can relax in the sauna with a fantastic view of the rising sun on an icy winter morning – a beautiful combination of warmth and winter landscape.

At Lohals Havn you'll find tiny red saunas with a staircase leading directly into the sea and into the sunset. The winter bathing club also organises atmospheric full moon dips here.

At Skårupøre Strandkiosk near Svendborg, cold sea dips are combined with aromatic sauna sessions and breathtaking sea views. Here the heat and cold work together to strengthen both body and mind, and there are regular aromatic session events that require registration.

At Eriks Hale on Ærø, Thea from Teglværkspladsen sets up her mobile sauna during the winter months and invites you to sauna and aromatic sauna sessions. You take care of the sea

bath yourself, and the wild sea view is just there. Warm up your body and boost your immune system; it's wellness at its best.

SEA AND COSTAL ACTIVITIES

The South Fyn Archipelago is a beautiful playground for everyone who loves the scent of the sea, the sound of waves, and adventures on, in, or under the water.

With 551 kilometres of coastline, small islands, bays, and coves, the possibilities are endless – whether you’re new to water activities, travelling with family, or a seasoned adventurer. Find peace in the archipelago while feeling the adrenaline rush and returning home with unforgettable experiences.

SEA KAYAKING

The South Fyn Archipelago is one of Denmark’s top destinations for sea kayaking. Its 55 islands and islets offer unique experiences, with stunning landscapes and fascinating wildlife. Beginners can enjoy the calm waters, while experienced kayakers can challenge themselves in more demanding conditions. Bring your own kayak or hire one. Glide across the water for hours or embark on a trip with overnight stays in shelters on the smaller islands.

SUP AND SURFING

The archipelago caters to all, whether you prefer stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), wind- or kitesurfing. There are spots for every wind direction: from shallow bays where children and beginners can paddle and find their balance, to open waters with long waves and strong winds that challenge even skilled surfers.

ANGLING

The Archipelago is an angler’s paradise year-round. Cast your line from the shore or go boat fishing for sea trout or mackerel. Beginners can join guided fishing trips with equipment and expert advice included. A fishing trip with an overnight stay on Avernakø or one of the other small islands offers a unique

experience, especially in the winter months, when the magical silence adds to the charm.

Don’t forget your fishing licence – www.fisketegn.dk

UNDERWATER EXPLORING AND SNORKELLING

Put on a diving mask and see the archipelago from beneath. Shallow reefs and submerged Stone Age settlements invite you to snorkel – an activity anyone can enjoy. You can also bring or hire gear for spearfishing and go on the hunt for sea trout, flatfish, and mullet.

WRECK DIVING

The seabed of the archipelago holds several shipwrecks that tell fascinating stories. The sunken ferry M/F Ærøsund near Ballen and the German motor torpedo boats in Lunkebugten near Valdemar’s Castle are highlights for any diver (Wreck diving requires a diving certificate and is only suitable for experienced divers).

Find tour suggestions and prime spots in the Geopark South Fyn Archipelago app.

TIP:

THE NATURE OF ART

ART AND CREATIVITY IN THE ARCHIPELAGO

The South Fyn Archipelago is a haven for art lovers. Here, rolling hills, deep forests, and small islands meet a special light that has inspired artists for generations to move here and create works that celebrate nature.

Experience everything from the classic depictions of the Fyn painters to modern art in galleries, workshops, and creative spaces. Step into the artists’ world and find works that remind you of the archipelago.

THE FYN PAINTERS AT FAABORG MUSEUM

At Faaborg Museum, you can see works by renowned Fyn painters (a group of local artists around 1900) such as Fritz Syberg, Peter Hansen, and Johannes Larsen, who portrayed the South Fyn landscape with love and affinity. The museum was designed for their art and is an experience in itself.

WORLD-CLASS PHOTO ART ON ÆRØ

Just outside Ærøskøbing, you’ll find the studio of photo artist Maria Fynsk Norup. Using herself as a subject, her works draw inspiration from the light, shadows, and shapes of nature, exploring human vulnerability and its connection to nature. Her art has been exhibited in Paris, Rome, and Copenhagen – and on Ærø, where you can also enjoy it.

SMALL AND GRAND CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

The South Fyn Archipelago offers many cultural experiences: from major events and unique audio walks to in-depth cultural history and cultural communities. This brings the region to life year-round, and you are more than welcome to join in.

CULTURAL EVENTS

Some annual highlights include the Geopark Days in May, celebrating the South Fyn Archipelago Geopark with three days of activities exploring geology, nature, and culture across our UNESCO-certified area. Another highlight is Fyn Rundt for Preserved Ships in July. More than 30 historic sailing vessels tour around Fyn, stopping at the harbours of Faaborg, Marstal, and Svendborg. Expect lively markets and a festive atmosphere. In November, Ærø, Strynø, and Langeland host Lys i Mørket – a cultural weekend illuminating the islands' nighttime darkness with enlightening cultural events. Find an overview of more events on pages 94–95.

THEATRE WITHIN NATURE

Take an audio walk through the South Fyn Archipelago with your phone and headphones and immerse yourself in stories brought to life within the stunning landscape. Follow in the footsteps of six authors in The Silence of the Sound near

Svendborg or experience dramatic history in Beneath the Ice in Faaborg and Svanninge Bakker. On Langeland, Against the Current takes you on a journey alongside H.C. Ørsted, while We, the Drowned on Ærø transforms Marstal's maritime tales into living experiences.

The audio walks are available year-round and combine culture, nature, and history. Learn more about audio walks on page 40.

CULTURAL HISTORY AND COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Join historic night watch tours or guided city walks and see the market towns in a new light or visit the area’s museums to dive into the history and art that shape the region. Discover the community spirit of the archipelago at smaller events, which bind us together throughout the year: author talks, communal dining, engaging workshops, and intimate concerts – just as the locals enjoy doing it, often organised by volunteers.

FOUR CASTLES AND MANOR HOUSES YOU

MUST SEE

Visit Egeskov Castle, one of Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance water castles, with an award-winning park. Explore the stunning gardens, the adventure forest, get lost in the maze, and discover the collection of vintage vehicles. In June, the castle park transforms into the Heartland Festival, focusing on music and culture.

Stop by the red-painted Tranekær Castle from the 13th century, perched on a hilltop on Langeland. Go on a guided tour (held in July/August and during special events), stroll through the park with unique Land Art, or explore the Medicinal Gardens, home to Northern Europe’s largest collection of medicinal plants.

Hop on Ærø’s free bus to Søbygaard, a historic ducal manor near Søby. Open from May until the autumn holidays, it serves as an activity centre with exhibitions, children’s activities, a Geopark Visitor Centre, concerts, and guided tours – all set amidst an idyllic moat and beautiful countryside.

Cycle along the spectacular cycle path, referred to as Denmark’s most beautiful bike route, which passes by Hvidkilde Manor and its lake. Although the estate isn’t open to the public, you can stop, soak up the stunning manor house landscape, and enjoy a walk around the lake.

MAKE SURE TO STOP BY

It’s also worth visiting Valdemars Castle on Tåsinge, which you can include in your cycling or hiking route or reach by taking the vintage ferry M/S Helge from Svendborg. HOW TO SPEND A DAY IN SVENDBORG

Svendborgsund, photo: Mikkel Ibman

ACTIVITIES FOR A DAY IN SVENDBORG

Pick up freshly baked croissants from one of the town’s micro-bakeries, grab a coffee to go from a café, and stroll over to Frederiksø.

Start your day on a bench overlooking the sound, enjoying the sight of ferry traffic, gently rocking wooden ships, and the quiet harbour life waking up.

Hop aboard M/S Helge and explore one of the recommended stops along the route (p. 51). Wander through the streets and alleys, letting the town’s many specialist shops tempt you—whether in Kattesundet, Møllergade, or Korsgade. Discover unique goods, artisan crafts, and fresh local produce. If it’s Saturday, don’t miss the lively atmosphere of Market Day with its many stalls.

HISTORY AND NATURE

Visit Northern Europe’s best-preserved workhouse, the Danish Welfare Museum, where stories of society’s darker sides unfold in authentic surroundings. Alternatively, head to Naturama, where the secrets of nature come alive through engaging and educational exhibits for the whole family.

Hire a bike and head towards Tåsinge: Be captivated by the view from the Svendborgsund Bridge, cycle on to Troense with a break at Valdemars Slot, and continue to Bregninge

Church near Tåsinge Museum. It’s said that from the church tower, you can see 28 islands, 65 churches, and 20 castles.

Or cycle to Thurø: Follow the scenic Christiansmindepath, cross the causeway, and ride along the water and across the island. Take a dip at Smørmosen and finish with a beer and a meal at Thurø Brewery on your way back to Svendborg.

CULINARY DELIGHTS

Prepare for a culinary adventure on the town’s ambitious food scene. Indulge in a full tasting menu at Resumé, housed in a beautiful old church, savour superbly prepared local ingredients at VI TO, share small plates and cocktails at Bar 105, dine in stately surroundings at Broholm Castle, or head to the town’s hotel restaurants or other eateries that welcome you with open arms and a comprehensive South Fyn menu.

THE CULTURAL LIFE

End your day by diving into Svendborg’s vibrant cultural life. Enjoy an open-air concert at Spillestedet Harders, check out the Borgerforeningen Svendborg’s programme, relax in deckchairs soaking up the last rays of sun at Kammerateriet on Frederiksø, sample local beers on tap at the Svendborgsund Brewery Tasting Room, or settle in for live music and new acquaintances at one of the town’s many charming pubs, like Børsen or Café Rouge.

LIFE AT THE HARBOUR

Svendborg boasts one of the country’s best-preserved harbour environments, where historic buildings and maritime traditions remain a vibrant part of the town’s identity.

Frederiksø is a cultural hub where Svendborg’s maritime heritage meets art and creativity. On the island, you’ll find active shipyard work, galleries, artist workshops, and bars, while the shipyard buildings often host markets and concerts. The harbour atmosphere extends along Jessens Mole, the marina, and the waterfront promenade at Nordre Kaj, where modern buildings and maritime schools blend seamlessly with the harbour’s raw and authentic character.

Sailing boats and old wooden ships glide past you as ferries connect Svendborg to Skarø, Drejø, Hjortø, and Ærø. Make time for day trips on the ferries to experience island charm –hop aboard the M/F Højestene in the morning, and you can visit both Skarø and Drejø in a single day.

The Sejlskibsbroen is a symbol of Svendborg’s maritime legacy. For generations, it has been a gathering place for wooden ships and maritime community. Today, traditional wooden ships still line the quay, and the pier buzzes with history and craftsmanship that tell tales of life at sea.

THREE MARITIME EVENTS IN SVENDBORG YOU SHOULDN’T MISS:

Fyn Rundt for Preserved Sailing Ships, with Svendborg Harbour as the final destination, 21 to 25 July.

Silverrudder – The world’s largest solo sailing race, starting and finishing in Svendborg, 19th September.

Æbleræs

– A tradition of apple sales directly from wooden ships at Svendborg Harbour, 10th October.

TAKE A NOSTALGIC TRIP ON THE WATER

Step aboard the 100-year-old veteran ship M/S Helge and experience Svendborg from the water.

Dubbed Denmark’s most beautiful sea route, M/S Helge takes you on a two-hour journey along South Fyn’s stunning coastline. Enjoy the sight of yachts, elegant wooden ships, and kayaks gliding through the water. Hop off along the way, explore the area, and return to Svendborg later on the veteran ship.

THREE FANTASTIC STOPS ALONG THE ROUTE:

2. Stop at Christiansminde on your way back for lunch at Hotel Christiansminde, and visit the DGV Gallery, show-

casing contemporary art in the beautiful setting of Villa Tårnborg.

3. Spend time in Troense, where you can have lunch or coffee at Troense Hotel, grab an ice cream from the charming Storms Hjørne corner shop, and stroll down Grønnegade with its well-preserved half-timbered houses, continuing along the Castle Avenue to Valdemars Castle, and get back home with M/S Helge, from the stop at the castle.

DENMARK’S FINEST MARKET TOWN

For the past two years, Svendborg has proudly held the title of Denmark’s finest market town.

The town centre offers a charming shopping experience, with Gerritsgade and Møllergade serving as lively main streets that connect small alleys to the centre. From here, narrow streets branch out, creating a unique atmosphere in the historic heart of the town.

EXPLORE THE STREETS

Gerritsgade and Møllergade are home to a wide variety of shops, cafés, and restaurants, all blending harmoniously side by side. From here, venture into the smaller streets such as Korsgade, Brogade, Gåsestræde, Kattesundet, Sankt Peder Stræde, and Torvestræde, where charming shopfronts decorate the streetscape. You’ll find everything from unique specialty stores to small workshops, where owners often greet you personally.

Take a moment to stroll through Kyseborgstræde, which runs behind St. Nicholas Church. Its crooked timber-framed houses from the 18th century tell the story of Svendborg’s old centre. Wander down the picturesque Bagergade, with colourful doors and hollyhocks, like something straight out of a postcard. The cobbled square in the heart of the town is a nice gathering place. Children can play on the playground, and every Saturday the square comes alive for the popular Market Day, where stalls and traders create a communal atmosphere.

INSIDER'S GUIDE TO SVENDBORG

WITH MORTEN KAAS:

“I feel that there is a unique DNA in Svendborg, with a drive where culture and community are created and come together.”

Sunset by Christiansminde, photo: VisitSvendborg

WHAT TO EXPLORE

“Obviously the South Fyn Archipelago, and rightly so, because you can continue to explore the beautiful surroundings. I also want to recommend exploring the development in the city, where brave entrepreneurs are diving into dream projects: For example, “Butikken bag 105,” where you can find natural wine and other specialities, combined with pop-up concerts, tastings, and cycling events in a courtyard bathed in evening sun. Also “Søster” – a combination of a hair salon, café, and second-hand shop. Here, sisters Louise and Marlene have created an oasis, where the atmosphere is informal and cosy.”

WHAT TO TRY

“Have a unique experience with the audio walk “The Silence of the Sound” by BaggårdTeatret, where you follow the Archipelago path from Svendborg harbour to Brechts Hus. Play a part in an invisible theatre, guided by the sounds. Visit the old shipyard island Frederiksø, which has become a lively place where communities are thriving in a beautiful fusion of art and culture. If you’re into exciting beers, stop by “Bogholderiet” and choose one of their unique craft beers.”

WHAT TO EXPERIENCE

“The magical open-air concerts at Harders are truly special. Again this year, they have a strong and diverse programme, and the atmosphere in the old merchant's house, combined with bands that are “too big” for the small stage, creates a unique intimate experience. I have already marked bands i want to see. And then there are the peaceful sunsets at Christiansminde. Take an evening swim while the sun sets over the town, and the sound is shimmering.”

WHAT TO TASTE

“105 Bar & Kitchen offers one of the best dining experiences in town with a kitchen inspired by Spanish tapas, with a South Fyn twist. The atmosphere is informal and cosy, and after your meal, you can enjoy their well-crafted cocktails. At the restaurant ViTo, modern gastronomy is combined with a touch of “old school” traditions. They focus on green dishes, fermentation, and pickling, and you get excellent ingredients prepared with creativity and taste that both challenge and delight.”

Where to stroll and hike

“Svendborg is a wonderful town surrounded by fantastic nature. No matter which in direction you head, you’ll find small gems. Walk along the coast of Thurø, experience the well-preserved history in Troense and at Valdemars Castle on Tåsinge, explore the hilly landscape of Egebjerg Bakker, and finish at the top of Egebjerg Mill, or take short walks in Skårupøre, Christiansminde, or Lehnskov. And most importantly: Bring your swimwear and picnic basket and enjoy the Archipelago and life along the way.”

SVENDBORG’S UNIQUENESS

“I feel that there is a unique DNA in Svendborg, with a drive where culture and community are created and come together. Everywhere in the town, the community life thrives, with a belief that if you put in the effort, Svendborg will become an even better place to live. The association behind the nature playground at Dronningemaen is creating a safe playground with fun events. The “Roots” of Høje Bøge bring more people and community to the football stadium. The association behind the Svendborg Jazz Festival organises a fantastic jazz weekend, and so on. That’s what makes Svendborg such a special place!”

Currently, I’m captivated by the life of painter Anna Syberg and the beauty/ephemerality of her watercolours. Faaborg offers an abundance of art and nature.”

WHAT TO TRY

“A visit to the region has to include a trip to an island. Taking the ferry to the small island of Bjørnø and walking to the other side is a nice, family-friendly choice. Going to Lyø or Avernakø and experiencing the calmness of island life is another great option – the ferry crossing is incredibly scenic.”

WHAT TO EXPERIENCE

“The Helios cinema and arts centre brings the community together. You – and your kids – always feel welcome here. Denmark’s oldest music society is located here. If there’s a concert while you’re in town, you simply have to go. Remember to look up: the venue’s decorated ceiling is an experience in itself.”

“The small art gallery Skitsehandlen, near the town square, is an absolute gem and one of my Faaborg favourites. There’s so much beauty and spontaneity in the gallery’s artistic sketches. Another recommendation is local jewellers Lind & James who make unique and exclusive jewellery.”

WHAT TO TASTE

“A nice espresso can kick-start even the drowsiest morning grouches on a Mondays, and Faaborg has one of the world’s best coffee roasters. Other culinary attractions are the roadside stalls selling fresh produce and eggs from local farms, in particular Kildegården and Knabegården, the latter specialising in asparagus. Once a year, I book a table at Falsled Kro – and sometimes a room, too. That we can experience this level of luxury in our little corner of the world fills me with an immense sense of pride.”

FAABORG’S BEAUTIFUL GEMS

“Whenever I’m away from home, I miss the beach at Klinten and the sea. I go swimming a couple of times a week, all year round – being close to the water on a clear day is the ultimate luxury. Another well-kept secret is sitting snugly in the harbour-front sauna, watching the sun rise on an icy morning.”

FAABORGS UNIQUENESS

“Faaborg is a perfect blend of fine culture and nature’s free offerings. I need beautiful things in my life in order to feel joy and purpose, and the Faaborg region fulfils that need with its stunning scenery and charming architecture. Moreover, Faaborg is full of wonderful, creative people who have chosen to settle in the region because of its natural beauty and serene atmosphere.”

“Every now and again, I meet someone visiting on vacation who is concerned that the region might lose its relaxed and beautiful aura if they were to live here on a permanent basis. All I can say is that I have lived here for 19 years and still appreciate the openness and beauty – even on a cold November's day.”

The streets are home to fascinating shops and artisans, showcasing that the spirit of Faaborg’s artist colony is still alive. A COSY EVENING IN FAABORG

Every evening in July and August, Faaborg’s Night Watchmen make their rounds, starting at the Clock Tower. It’s free to join, and along the way, the watchman often stops at the town’s bars for a beer – just the thing to prepare his voice for another watchman’s song. Perhaps you’ll fancy a drink yourself after the tour? End your day at Vinbanken or Den Lille Franske

But don’t overdo it! A single good day in Faaborg is rarely enough! If you haven’t been island hopping yet, make sure you’re ready and refreshed for the ferry the next morning. Another wonderful day of discovery and relaxation awaits you on Lyø and Avernakø

FAABORG – SMALL TOWN, BIG EXPERIENCES

Faaborg Museum, photo: Andreas Bastiansen

A day is not enough to explore Faaborg – a historic market town that was one of Fyn’s most important harbour cities in the 18th century. Faaborg is a haven for art, culture, and nature experiences.

THE OLD PRISON – STEP IN AND BREAK OUT!

The former Faaborg Prison sparks curiosity in both adults and children as the iron door slams shut. What’s it like to be locked up? A visit to the Old Prison will give you answers – and might even make you rethink your views on justice and punishment.

KALEKO WATERMILL

Find out how grain was milled 100 years ago at Kaleko Watermill, Denmark’s oldest preserved watermill, which exudes a unique charm. Kaleko also served as the backdrop for the popular Danish Christmas series Nissebanden, first broadcast in 1984 and shown four times since.

THE CLOCK TOWER – THE TOWN'S LANDMARK

The Clock Tower, Faaborg’s iconic landmark, is a remnant of St. Nicholas Church, which was demolished after the Reformation in 1536. The view from the tower over the town’s roofs, Svanninge Bakker, and the South Fyn Archipelago is breathtaking. They say no true Faaborg resident ever moves so far away that they can’t see their Clock Tower.

Faaborg l Small city, big experiences

FAABORG MUSEUM – A WORK OF ART

Faaborg Museum is truly unique. Built for the art of the Fyn Painters, it is itself a work of art, combining paintings, sculptures, architecture, and furniture design. This architectural gem is one of the finest examples of Danish classicism. Every Wednesday and Sunday in July and August, the museum offers introductions to its history, the Fyn Painters, and current exhibitions.

RIDE A VINTAGE TRAIN

What was it like to travel by train in the 1950s? You can experience it on the South Fyn Vintage Railway. The journey from Faaborg to Korinth offers scenic views of the archipelago and the beautiful South Fyn landscape.

THE ARCHIPELAGO MUSEUM – “FEEL YOURSELF ”

The Archipelago Museum is Denmark’s first museum to put YOU at the centre – not objects or long texts. A visit gives you engaging experiences and insights into how you, your friends, and family react to nature’s diverse stimuli. Along the way, you’ll also learn about the Stone Age, the South Fyn Archipelago, and Iron Age rituals. But at the heart of it all is your personal connection to nature and your experience thereof.

THE ALPS OF FYN – MYSTERY WITH A VIEW

The forces at work during the last ice age shaped a unique hill country almost encircling Faaborg: Svanninge Bakker, also known as the “Alps of Fyn”.

Many years ago, Svanninge Bakker was a desolate, uninhabited area, overgrown with heather. The townspeople of Faaborg were not fond of passing through the hills at nighttime, and place names such as the Thief’s Button, Hell’s Hollow and the Coffin Lid are a testament to those feelings of fear and superstition.

Today, the hills, valleys, and forests of Svanninge Bakker are best known as a popular choice for excursions and outdoor activities, as the rolling hills exude adventure, beauty, and romance. The many paths meandering through the hills are perfect for hiking or mountain biking trips.

There are also marked routes for those who prefer to enjoy the scenery on horseback. See Riderute Sydfyn for routes. You’ll find amazing MTB trails in Gåsebjergsand Bike Park

Also: in case of snow, Svanninge Bakker is where you find the best toboggan runs and ski slopes. Read more at visitfaaborg.com

PIPSTORN FOREST

Pipstorn Forest has one of Denmark’s largest collections of prehistoric monuments and burial mounds. There is a special vibe to the forest, stimulating the imagination and taking you back to ancient times. Around 4,000 years ago, the Pipstorn area started being used as a burial site, and only later did the forest grow around it.

Today, Pipstorn Forest is used for forestry and leisure activities as well as being home to wild animals and plants. Some hundred metres into the forest, there is a combined shelter and bonfire cabin as well as a great nature playground. There are mountain-biking trails in the forest as well as fixed control points for orienteering. Entrance and parking at the Lucienhøj panorama point.

FOLLOW THE NIGHT WATCHMAN

In 1592, Faaborg’s first night watchman began his rounds. His duties included maintaining order at night and raising the alarm in case of fire. This tradition was revived in 1995.

Every summer evening, the night watchman sets off at 8:00 pm from the clock tower. Just show up! It’s free for all ages.

LILAC COUNTRY

South Fyn – and especially the Faaborg region – is the land of lilacs.

Every year, beginning in mid-May, the South Fyn landscape undergoes a magical transformation when the tender green colours of springtime are woven through with a net of violet lines – the flowering lilacs! Ever since the early 1800s, it has been tradition on South Fyn to plant lilacs along roads and property lines and as windbreaks.

When you travel along the narrow winding roads of South Fyn in summer, the scent of flowering lilacs pervades the air, and the view of nature’s own decorations is something to behold.

The flowering lilacs are best experienced on foot or on bike. If you choose to go by car, just remember to roll down your window to enjoy the scent as well!

We celebrate the lilacs in mid-May, with guided tours and samples from the Lilac Country.

A PIECE OF JAPAN ON FYN

The Japanese Gardens outside Faaborg is landscape gardening at its finest. Take a relaxing walk through seven themed gardens laid out according to old Japanese traditions. Marvel at the carefully sculpted bushes and trees and their reflections in the lakes and streams.

Large rhododendron, cherry, hydrangea, and azalea are among the many fascinating plants in the gardens. A soulful forest experience awaits you in the brand-new forest garden.

INSIDER'S GUIDE TO LANGELAND

“I first visited Langeland at 16 on a moped from Tønder – because of love. Later, the rest of my family followed.”

Bovballe Forest, photo: Marie Wöldike

WHAT TO EXPLORE

“The Hatbakker hills near Vesteregn are a remarkable area. Locals called it “Little Austria” because it resembles a mini mountain landscape. These hills inspired my the song “I et land uden høje bjerge”. Make sure to visit Fredmosen and the coastline. There’s a small net hut that I adore.”

WHAT TO TRY

“Visit the Cold War Museum, as it’s a truly unique place. Until recently, we thought of the Cold War as a relic of the past, but it has become chillingly relevant again.”

“Art on Langeland is absolutely a highlight. Visit the Art Towers, where I created a sound installation. Photographer Jan Nielsen’s bird images are world-class – you should go where his work is exhibited. The island also boasts outstanding painters like Hans Kjær and Keld Nielsen, and the Nowhuset gallery in Tullebølle features strong art exhibitions.”

WHAT TO EXPERIENCE

“I must mention our festival, NÆR – a poetic music festival with seated audience. Additionally, there are more and more new music events across Langeland and the South Fyn Archipelago. There will be five to six very different festival experiences on Langeland, which I believe will create a fantastic synergy.”

“Another wonderful venue for concerts and events is “ØP” (Ørsted Pavilion), where I’ve performed several times.”

WHAT TO TASTE

“Head to Bagenkop Kro – if you can get a table! It’s become a huge success, drawing people from all over the country. Efes, located at the square in Rudkøbing, is also a great place, and at Grand House Burger in the pedestrian street, Hisham takes great pride in crafting his delicious burgers.”

WHERE TO STROLL AND HIKE

“The Heart Path takes you from Rudkøbing’s centre straight into the woods. It’s incredible to walk from the shopping street, past the mill, and into the wildest natural area. Here, my wife finds the town’s provincial charm while I enjoy the countryside.”

“Walking along the coast near Egeløkke is breathtaking, especially along the Archipelago Trail. Many places on the island feel untouched, and Langeland remains a hidden gem, though people are thankfully starting to discover it. Rudkøbing’s old streets are wonderfully well-preserved. Ramsherred has experienced a significant renaissance – which these quaint houses thoroughly deserve.”

LANGELAND’S BEAUTIFUL GEMS

“You must see the wild horses at Gulstav and Oehlenschlæger’s Beech near Stengade Strand, which inspired Denmark’s national anthem, “Der er et yndigt land”. Tranekær Castle and the active Sukkerfabrikken (Sugar Factory) are also worth a visit.”

“My favourite spot is a bench overlooking the sea in Bovballe Forest. I sat there every day for over a year, gazing eastward because my Asian wife couldn’t come to Denmark. I know that view by heart.”

LANGELAND’S UNIQUENESS

“Langeland is undergoing a revival, and the local mentality is wonderfully welcoming. The people of Langeland are deeply grounded. They are a bit reserved and won’t overwhelm you. But once you get to know their ways, you’ll discover humour and warmth. You’ll see it in full bloom on a Monday evening at football practice, under brand-new floodlights at perhaps Denmark’s most beautifully situated stadium – in Rudkøbing, overlooking the South Fyn Archipelago.”

ÆRØ – TAKE YOUR TIME

The words are carved into a red wooden heart and hung on the wall of a house in Ærøskøbing. Perhaps without much purpose, yet it says it all – because on Ærø, the pace is simply different.

Maybe it’s because Ærø is an island you have to take a ferry. You don’t end up here by chance or just pass through. You come to Ærø because you want to. And we mean it too: take your time while you're here.

On the next pages and on visitaeroe.com, you can read more about how you can spend your time while on Ærø.

INSIDER'S GUIDE TO ÆRØ

WITH GUDRUN MARIE SCHMIDT:

“To me, Ærø is a feeling. When you leave the ferry, you step into another world.”

Ærøskøbing, photo: Freja Kock Christlieb

WHAT TO EXPLORE

“To me, Ærø is a feeling. When you leave the ferry, you step into a different world. Let your shoulders drop, embrace the change, and enjoy the feeling of time that magically seems to stretch endlessly. Lift your gaze, and you’ll find yourself on an island that curiously feels both big and small. Big enough to spend a lifetime exploring the winding roads, villages, beaches, sea, trails, cliffs, piers, and cobblestone streets of Ærøskøbing. Small enough to stand on the island’s ridge on a summer's day, bathed in sun and wind, and take in the spectacular sight of the sea on both sides.”

WHAT TO TASTE

“I have favourite spots all over the island. In Ærøskøbing, grab the world’s loveliest coffee at Azzuro Vino in the old smithy on Pilebækken. For a quick bite, I recommend the legendary burger at Havnegrillen. For a knife-and-fork experience, try the ambitious and charming dishes at Kraut & Koala. At the elegant Arnfeldt restaurant, rotating chefs ensure surprises on every plate. In Marstal, head to Fru Berg for the best Stjerneskud i have had in my life, and Marstang Mad & Vin for local ingredients and vegetarian options. If you’re in Søby, Café Arthur is a must – truly great chips!”

WHAT

TO EXPERIENCE ON ÆRØ

“There are three must-dos on Ærø. First is the starry sky: On a clear night, the heavens open up in stunning beauty, offering a glittering silver play and big thoughts for restless minds. Then

there’s Voderup Klint. The Ice Age shaped this landscape’s beautiful terraces, where a long staircase framed by grasses and wildflowers leads to the water – an unforgettable and often windy natural wonder. Finally, the archipelago view; lose yourself in the sight of the South Fyn Archipelago from Ærø’s northern shores. The tiny islands dotting the horizon are truly striking – your eyes won’t tire for a second.”

WHERE TO STAY

“Ærø offers hotels that suit most budgets, and I dream (quite unrealistically) of waking up at the small luxury hotel, The Monica. Otherwise, I recommend embracing the island’s smaller accommodations. If the holiday home at Rise Præstegård is available, you’ll enjoy the most beautiful parsonage garden with tall trees and a sense of grandeur. I've stayed at the Watermill in idyllic Borgnæs every summer for 20 years with my husband and kids, and I know from experience: this place makes you happy.”

MY FAVOURITE PLACES ON ÆRØ – AND WHY

“If I have to name one spot, it’s Skjoldnæs Lighthouse at the island’s tip. Climb to the top, watch the light beam like a giant diamond, and head to the beach, which, in my opinion, is the best place on Ærø to see the evening turn the sea milky blue as the sun sets like a glowing golden orb. But I also love the Archipelago Trail; I’ve long lost my heart to the stunning resting spots along this route.”

ACTIVITIES FOR A DAY ON ÆRØ

Head to Skjoldnæs Lighthouse. Climb the spiral staircase to the top. Your reward is an absolutely magnificent view of Lillebælt, the South Fyn Archipelago, and the Baltic Sea.

100 YEARS OF FAMILY HISTORY

Don’t miss the historic bathing houses passed down through generations of Ærø families. They are over 100 years old and can be found at Vesterstrand in Ærøskøbing and Eriks Hale in Marstal.

ENJOY LOCAL INGREDIENTS

Dine farm-to-table style. At places like Marstang Mad & Vin and Arnfeldt Hotel & Restaurant, their flavourful and creative meals are based on Ærø’s wealth of locally sourced ingredients.

CALMING NATURE

Head to Voderup Klint. Let the kids run free, stretch your legs – or just sit on a bench and gaze. The view of the crashing Baltic Sea is breathtaking.

THE ISLAND’S LARGEST TOWN

Explore the seafaring town of Marstal, especially its charming and winding shortcuts, known as “snorrer,” hidden among the old skipper houses – all of which lead to the harbour.

UNIQUE WELLNESS EXPERIENCE

Right by the sea at Kleven Harbor in the village of Ommel, you’ll find a wilderness bath and sauna available for rental.

The locals heat it up before you arrive. All you have to do is relax and enjoy the view.

THE QUIET VILLAGE LIFE

Plan your route to include the island’s small villages. You’ll often find great buys at roadside stalls, such as homemade marmalade, baked goods, art, or fantastic flea market treasures from the locals.

BEACH ACTIVITIES ALL YEAR ROUND

Ærø’s beaches can be enjoyed year-round! Build stone castles at Vitsø Beach, dig tunnels in the sand at Vesterstrand, hunt for fossils at Voderup Klint’s beach, or feel the spray of the waves at Risemark Beach.

TRAVEL RESPONSIBLY

We love welcoming visitors to the South Fyn Archipelago. But we also want to take good care of our unique area and hope you’ll help us.

Here are 10 tips for being a responsible tourist:

1. Travel as much as possible by train or bus – and if you drive, consider carpooling with others.

2. Prioritise exploring the area on foot or by bike.

3. Stay at certified or environmentally labelled accommodations that focus on sustainability.

4. Support local shops and cafés offering unique goods and climate-friendly products and spread your purchases across several places.

5. Sort your waste according to the local regulations.

6. Bring your own thermos or bottle for coffee and water to reduce unnecessary packaging.

7. Clean up after yourself and feel free to pick up litter if you spot any in nature.

8. Choose meals made with locally sourced ingredients.

9. Minimise food waste by taking leftovers with you to enjoy later.

10. Leave this magazine behind when you depart the South Fyn Archipelago, allowing others to benefit from it instead of discarding it.

Experience the South Funen Archipelago aboard the veteran ship M/S Helge

The boat trip lasts two and a half hours and takes you along the beautiful South Funen coasts. The tour passes close by the islands of Tåsinge and Thurø, Valdemar’s Castle, and under the Svendborgsund Bridge along the coast to Hotel Stella Maris.

Bring your picnic basket and enjoy the sight of sailboats setting sail, the fine old wooden ships, and kayaks gliding by. You are welcome to get off along the way and hop back on when M/S Helge passes by again.
