COD Now Accepting Firefighter Academy Applications Huge Need for Trained Firefighters Statewide By Jackie Devereaux PALM DESERT, CA— Have you ever wanted to be a firefighter? Now’s your chance. The College of the Desert (COD) has received approval from the California State Fire Marshall’s Office to start a fully accredited Basic Firefighter Academy beginning January 2013 at the new Roy Wilson Fire Training Center in Thousand Palms. Applications are being accepted immediately. “ The course is designed to be completed in two semesters (Spring and Fall 2013),” said John Jaramillo, Dean of Applied Science and Business at COD. The COD Basic Firefighter Academy is designed for working students with evening classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and day time classes on Saturdays throughout the two semesters. The firefighter program is constructed to provide students with a basic knowledge of fire service operations and to provide entry-level skills required by most fire departments. College units earned can be applied to an associate’s degree. Upon successful completion of the academy,

students will be eligible to receive their State of California Firefighter I Certificate. There are several prerequisites an applicant must meet before being approved to the fire academy. First, you must be 18 years old or older to apply; second, be in possession of a current California EMT certification; and third, be in possession of a transcript of FIT 1 (Fire Protection Organization) or college level equivalent; fourth, you must possess a current Physical Abilities Test Certificate (Biddle or CPAT) completed one within nine months prior to the first day of the academy. There are no exceptions to this prerequisite so get your Biddle or CPAT certificate today! Applications to the fire academy are available on the COD website www. collegeofthedeser t.edu by clicking Academic Programs, Fire Technology, State Fire Marshall Training (Basic Firefighter Academy). According to Chris Madigan, Director of COD’s Public Safety Academy, the State Fire Marshall’s accreditation is a major milestone in the Coachella Valley’s ability to fully train its very own ready-for-hire firefighters.

Change In Command Ceremony

Up until this point local students interested in attending an accredited Basic Fire Academy had to drive as far as Riverside and beyond to attend classes. Local hiring agencies often found it necessary to fill Firefighter vacancies from out of the area with the result too often being a short-term employee and constant turnover. Director Madigan said this program will not only address the high rate of east county population growth and increasing demand for services, but will also serve to strengthen the value of existing EMT and Basic Peace Officer Training programs currently offered at COD. For more information, go to www. collegeofthedesert.edu or call the Fire Academy Coordinator Ignacio Otter at 760 346-8041 or by email iotero@ collegeofthedesert.edu.

Fabulous Palm Springs Follies

Fabulous Palm Springs Follies The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, the best feel-good, live, on-stage musical performance anywhere; and it’s as close as the historic Plaza Theatre in downtown Palm Springs. For the past 21 years, the Follies, under the ever-watchful eyes of impresario and cofounder, Rif Markowitz, has presented a worldfamous, Broadway-caliber celebration of the music, dance and comedy of Mid-Century America with a cast old enough to have lived it. Each year, for more than a generation, the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies promises a more spectacular show with each successive season. For more than a generation they have delivered on their promise, as legendary guest stars and international vaudeville acts join the Follies’ world-renowned chorus line of Long-Legged Lovelies and Follies Gentlemen, all ranging in age from 54 to 83, for lavish production

numbers while decked out in elegant, handmade costumes from the Follies’ million-dollar wardrobe department. The Follies has just announced the musical theme for its 22nd season. It’s called “Dance to the Music,” and it is sure to bring back memories of running home after school to watch Dick Clark and “American Bandstand” as new songs were performed by teen-age idols. Those times can be re-lived beginning Nov. 1, as the Follies dance to the music from the Stroll to the Twist to Disco. In addition to an all-new production, the folks in the Follies’ back office have crafted five new ways to enhance your visit. These range from savings on early ticket purchases; Annual Passports to the Follies as one visit is never enough; enhanced frequent-guest awards; dinner with the cast; and, main floor seating in the theater from just $29. The curtain goes up on the Follies’ 22nd season on Nov. l with celebrated vocalist Lorna Luft singing the songs made popular by her mother, Judy Garland. Ms. Luft, a Palm Springs resident, will perform through Dec. 31. The Follies is dark the first week in January, but returns Jan. 8 with headliner Lou Christe (“Lightnin Strikes”), who will perform through Mar. 9. Following Christie, and back by popular demand, Lesley Gore (“It’s My Party”) will reprise her many hits between Mar. 12 and the final curtain of the season on May 19. More information is available by calling 760-327-0225. Do your part in proving Billie Burke’s famous quote: “Age doesn’t matter unless you’re a cheese.”

McCallum Theater Adds Nine Shows It didn’t take long for Mitch Gershenfeld, the recently appointed president and CEO of the McCallum Theatre, to put his stamp on the range of entertainment that will be available to Coachella Valley residents beginning the end of August. Rather than have the theater dark until November or late October, Gershenfeld has announced the addition of nine shows to the McCallum schedule. First off the mark as the season’s opener is Steve Martin and his Steep Canyon Rangers bluegrass band on Aug. 1, followed a week later by the locally popular Pink Martini. But it is the addition of some alternative music to the program that has caught the attention of some theater-goers. Historically, the McCallum has featured touring Broadway shows, one-person shows or pop concerts. But, perhaps taking the lead from the enormously successful Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, Gershenfeld has booked some alternative entertainment with a couple of performers who have previously taken the stage at the Coachella and Stage festivals. One impressive ‘get’ is a Nov. 16 performance by Jackie Evancho, the now 12-year-old gifted operatic singer who is now marketing herself as a “crossover” artist. Gershenfeld acknowledged that Evancho commands fees higher than that paid by the McCallum, and even with high-end ticket prices ($40-$129) there would not be enough income generated by the performance to cover all costs. Local philanthropist and McCallum Theatre board member, Joanne McGrath, stepped up to the sponsorship-window, assuring Evancho and Gershenfeld that the pre-teen’s performance would end up in the black without her having to sing in a casino saloon. Other artists performing early at the

McCallum are Conjunto Primevera (Sept. 1); Mike Birbilia (Sept. 22); Wilco (Sept. 28); Smokey Robinson (Oct. 26); Charlie Zaa (Oct. 27); and Shelby Lynne (Nov. 3).

Eisenhower Medical Center – A Beautiful Thing Kudos and a tip of the golden bedpan to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage. This medical facility, the only non-profit hospital in the Valley, has just been named the second most beautiful hospital in the nation. The award, based on 170,000 votes cast – Eisenhower garnered just over 39,000 votes - was awarded by Soliant Health, a nationwide provider of healthcare staffers. In citing the attributes involved in making the selection, Eisenhower’s design was said to “incorporates evidence-based processes (whatever that means) into each patient room.” And, in describing the junior-suiteat-a-Hilton look, noted that the hospital had “central pavilions with refined color palettes and Renaissance-based art.” Only one other hospital in California made the top 20. The proud first-place winner: Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, N.C.

Travel

Galactic Virgin, Magical Cruises & Jay Leno By Sherman Fridman

Virgin America Goes Galactic Rememb er when “getting there was half the fun.” Airplane travel was glamorous, seats were four across with an aisle down the middle, food was actually prepared on board and you didn’t have to take off your shoes before walking through a full-body scan.

Virgin Galactic, spearheaded by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, is the world’s first commercial ‘spaceline’ and will carry people and payloads to space on sub-orbital flights allowing for an out-of-the-seat zero-gravity experience. No t o n l y w i l l t h e t r i p o f f e r astounding views of earth from the blackness of space, the trip qualifies passengers for astronaut status. Plus, you needn’t pay to use the toilet, as of yet,

Jay Leno serves as Grand Marshall of the Harley Davidson Love Ride

Virgin goes galactic While security measures are not the airlines’ fault, the unseemly competition engaged in by air carriers to squeezing the last dime from economy passengers over and above the base ticket price is remarkable for ingenuity and spin, i.e. “We’re giving passengers a greater choice.” I do not want to make a choice to pay for using the toilet on an airplane, as one European discount airline has proposed; nor do I want to fly standing, harnessed to a vertical contraption so that more passengers can be shoveled into the aircraft like cows to market, as that same airline has also proposed. And, what’s happened to frequent f lyer prog rams? The y now are s o complex, featuring multiple levels of participation and ‘rewards,’ that a PhD in mathematics is necessary to decipher them. Virgin America is a prime example with, by my count, 14 different perks spread out among three tiers of frequent flyer membership. But, Virgin America is not the only carrier guilty of this practice; we are singling out Virgin America because it has just announced a frequent flyer award that other airlines will find impossible to match. The Virgin frequent flyer who accumulates the most points between August 8, 2012 and August 7, 2013 will earn the ultimate reward: A sub-orbital space flight on Virgin Galactic.

Rich Block, Master Magician there is none aboard the space vehicle.

Magical Crystal Cruises Not quite ready to experience the magical effects of zero gravity? Not to worry; the wizards at Crystal Cruises – voted the world’s best large-ship cruise line for the 17th consecutive year by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine – have cast a

magical spell over their two ships and are bringing magicians from the renowned private magicians’ club, Hollywood’s Magic Castle, to entertain aboard both the Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity for the balance of their 13 ultra-luxe European cruises this year, and on every voyage in 2013. Crystal Cruises is known for providing guests a diverse selection of thoughtprovoking, scholarly and sophisticated enrichment activities that provide extensive on-board choices for cultured world travelers. However, this time there’s an added twist. Like the Magic Castle itself, entrance to the on-board magic performances is by “invitation-only,” with advance, complimentary “invitations” available in the ship’s library. Guests can choose from multiple, half-hour performances over the course of several nights. Come show-time, guests enter a special entrance to find one of the ship’s lounges transformed into the mysterious spirit of the Victorian-era Magic Castle, with flameless candles, lighting, music, murals, bookshelves and magic movies from the 1920’s. Attendance at each show is limited to 25 guests, so audience members are privy to an extraordinary upclose look at sleight-of-hand magic tricks and bewitching hocus pocus. And the magical experience doesn’t end with the cruise. The invitations received onboard can be exchanged for one-time access to the real Magic Castle in Hollywood.

Jay Leno on Love Ride for HarleyDavidson Those who like their travel experience to be on two wheels can join comedian Jay Leno

This year’s ride, which will be held at Castaic Lake, CA, marks the 29th anniversary of the Love Ride, founded in 1984 by Oliver Shokouh, owner of Harley-Davidson of Glendale. Supported by the 23 Southern California Harley-Davidson dealerships, the Love Ride with its thousands of bikers has raised $24 million for various charities over the past 28 years. How Hormones Affect Your Weight

Family Health

Glucosan is the “Yin to the Yang” of Insulin By Shelly Sheppard PALM DESERT, CA – Hormones are the CEO’s of our body. They govern everything from our sex lives, immune responses and stress levels. They also control our metabolism. Our metabolism is more than just the way our bodies burn calories from food for fuel. It is the biochemistry of our bodies that is governed by hormones that tell our brains and bodies when we are hungry, when we are full, what to do with food after it has been eaten, whether to store it or burn it as fuel. Hormones also control how our bodies regulate and consume energy stores during exercise. Hormones control almost every aspect of how we gain weight and also how we can lose it. When balanced, hormones can help you lose weight. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas after consuming carbohydrates, which are mostly found in grains, starchy vegetables, fruits, sugars, and legumes. Insulin is needed to ensure we have proper levels of glucose in our blood so our body has fuel for crucial functions. However, when insulin levels increase dramatically, it shifts the body into a “storage mode” and promotes the deposition of fat into fat cells. Producing a large surge of insulin often causes a reactive surge in a hormone called Cortisol our stress hormone which slows your metabolism and fat burning; and breaks down both muscle and bone. Leptin is a hormone that is produced in the fat cells of our bodies and is tied closely to regulating food intake and expenditure, including appetite, metabolism, and hunger. It controls why we feel hungry or full. When present in high levels, it signals our brains that we are full and can stop eating. When low, we feel hungry and crave food so appetite increases and metabolism slows. Unfortunately overweight people have

higher levels of Leptin and when weight is lost rapidly in the case of crash diets leptin production decreases causing people to feel hungrier and driving them to eat more which often leads to gaining weight back and not being able to keep the weight off long term.

Hormones control almost every aspect of how we gain weight and also how we can lose it. In order to maintain balance in the body, there are other hormones that counteract insulin. Promoting higher levels of these can have very beneficial effects. For Example: Glucagon is a hormone which is also produced by the pancreas, and is the yin to the yang of insulin. Glucagon raises low blood sugar and shifts the body’s metabolism into a fat burning mode, converting fat to glucose and stimulating the release of fat from our fat stores to use as fuel. It helps decrease cholesterol levels and shed excess water weight. It promotes anti- inflammatory chemicals, increases cellular metabolism, increases endurance, improves blood flow, preserves muscle mass, decreases pain, and helps regulate the immune system. Another hormone called Growth Hormone increases at night when insulin decreases and plays a large part in maintaining muscle mass and healing the body. Its ability to repair cells can enhance

anti-aging properties in the body. The more lean muscle mass the body has the more efficient it is at burning fat. If you eat properly and exercise regularly your hormones are more balanced and it is easier to lose weight and keep it off in the long term. Caloric restrictions for weight loss should be healthy based on you height, weight, age, and gender and should include a balance of good fats, complex high fiber carbohydrates and lean proteins. Good fats or essential fatty acids increase your metabolic rate and help burn calories [Fat burns Fat!], decrease cravings, lower the glycamic index of other foods and suppress appetite. Complex carbohydrates provide your body with the nutrients, fiber and sugars needed to fuel your body and regulate insulin levels. Lean proteins provide your body with the fuel it needs to build, maintain, and replace tissue in the body that make up your muscles, organs, hemoglobin and

can help produce more Glucagon. It is also important to avoid processed foods because they are often high in sugars. Eating organic Fruits, Vegetables and Meat and Dairy products is another way to avoid pesticides, hormones and antibiotics in the food sources that affect your body as well. Exercise and proper relaxation techniques help to balance Cortisol levels. It is important to consult with Physicians, Nutritionists, Dieticians and Exercise Physiologists who understand how hormones can affect you weight before starting any diet program for weight loss so that your nutritional needs, exercise requirements and hormone levels can be assed for healthy sustainable weight loss. Living Longer

Will The Search For Life Extension End Now That Anti-Aging Proteins Have Been Found? By Mr. Life Extension, Art Kunkin Now that newspaper and Internet sites are reporting that a team of Japanese scientists has found the proteins responsible for aging, is the long search for human immortality coming to a close? I don’t think so. However, before examining the strange and seemingly contradictory reports emanating from Japan, let’s review the history of recent life extension research as seen by the Internet’s Wikipedia encyclopedia. Here goes! In 1889, Charles-Édouard BrownSéquard injected himself under the skin with an extract of dog and guinea pig testicles. He then stated that “the injections have taken 30 years off my life.” In 1920, Serge Voronoff started transplanting monkey testicles into humans for the purpose of rejuvenation. In 1970, the American Aging Association was formed based on the impetus given by Denham Harman, originator of the free radical theory of aging. Harman wanted an organization of biogerontologists devoted to research and the sharing of information among scientists interested in extending human lifespan. Harman’s research suggested

that aging and eventual death was caused by chemical molecules he called “free radicals,” compounds that were naturally created in the body but caused the death of the living cells. In 1976, futurists Joel Kurtzman and Philip Gordon wrote “No More Dying. The Conquest Of Aging And The Extension Of Human Life,” the first popular book about scientific research to extend human lifespan. Subsequently, Kurtzman was invited to testify before the House Select Committee on Aging, chaired by Claude Pepper of Florida. Congress was concerned with the possible financial impact of successful longevity research on Social Security payments to retired senior citizens. Saul Kent published “The Life Extension Revolution” in 1980 and created the Life Extension Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes dietary supplements. The Life Extension Foundation publishes a periodical called Life Extension Magazine. The 1982 bestselling book “Life Extension: A Practical Scientific Approach” by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw further popularized the phrase “life extension.” In 1983, Roy Walford, a life-extensionist

at UCLA (who also wrote for my weekly newspaper, The Los Angeles Free Press and was a close friend of mine), published a popular book called “Maximum Lifespan.” In 1988, Walford and his student Richard Weindruch summarized their research into the ability of calorie restriction to extend the lifespan of rodents in “The Retardation of Aging and Disease by Dietary Restriction.” Walford also wrote about calorie restriction with his daughter, Lisa. It had been known since the work of Clive McCay in the 1930s that calorie restriction can extend the maximum lifespan of rodents. But it was the work of Walford and Weindruch that gave detailed scientific grounding to that knowledge. Walford’s personal interest in life extension motivated his scientific work and he practiced calorie restriction himself. Walford who spoke of living until he was 120 died at the age of 80 from complications caused by his being the physician in the famous Biosphere experiment. Money generated by the non-profit Life Extension Foundation allowed Saul Kent to finance the Alcor Life Extension Foundation, the world’s largest organization devoted to cryonics. Alcor presently freezes the bodies

of volunteers in the hope that the bodies can be revived sometime in the future when medical science has solved the problem of human death. The cryonics movement had been launched in 1962 by Robert Ettinger’s book, “The Prospect of Immortality.” In the 1960s, Saul Kent had been a cofounder of the Cryonics Society of New York. Alcor gained national prominence when baseball star Ted Williams was cryonically preserved by Alcor in 2002 and a family dispute arose as to whether Williams had really wanted to be cryopreserved. Regulatory and legal struggles between the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Life Extension Foundation included seizure of merchandise and court action. In 1991, Saul Kent and Bill Faloon, the principals of the Foundation, were jailed. The Foundation accused the FDA of perpetrating a “holocaust” and “seeking Gestapo-like power” through its regulation of drugs and marketing claims. In 1992, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) was formed to create what it considered an anti-aging medical specialty distinct from geriatrics, support for persons presently experiencing Jump to Page 22

The Capri Restaurant – A Desert Hot Springs Landmark Unveils New Menu in October/November DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – When you go to a steak house you generally order a nice, thick Porterhouse or Ribeye without much thought about whether the animals (the meats came from) were treated humanely or not. My husband, Tom, and I were surprised to discover that all the meats at the new Capri Restaurant are now hormone-free, antibiotic-free, range free and from farms that humanely treat their animals. “It’s already a growing trend in many Los Angeles restaurants and it’s a subject I care deeply about,” said Executive Chef Anthony Santucci, who is a third generation chef at the Capri. That was good to hear from the chef of a restaurant known throughout the Valley for the past 35 years for their handcut steaks and chops. However, the Capri wasn’t always known for its “upscale and hormone-free meats.” Its history goes back to an original butcher shop and grocery store the family patriarch and Anthony’s grandfather, John Santucci Sr., and his grandmother, Julia Santucci, opened on Pierson Boulevard and Acoma Avenue back in the 1950s. Later, his family took over the Valeras Restaurant located at the corner of Palm Drive and Granada Avenue which is currently the home of Rocky’s New York Pizza. Finally, in November 1976, the Santucci family opened the Capri Restaurant on the corner of Palm

the Capri Restaurant inside the Miracle Springs Resort & Spa. Today, patrons are treated to the same butcher-trained, handcut steaks but with the upscale, humanelytreated aspect to their meats. “Lots of people were disappointed when the restaurant closed, but truthfully, I didn’t want to see the business close and I didn’t want to leave the city,” Santucci said.

I made the mistake of ordering a salad with my dinner and it was just too much food, so I took my dinner salad and leftovers home. My husband ordered their 16 ounce Rib Eye Steak ($19), after his traditional Shrimp Cocktail appetizer ($9). Malcolm Doran – The Picasso of Our Time By Jackie Devereaux When you examine the body of Malcolm Doran’s artwork it becomes clear that he is the Picasso of our time, and we’re lucky to have such a talented and innovative artist living right here in the Coachella Valley. When I asked art dealers and art aficionados who (in their opinion) are the master artists in the community, Doran’s name always popped up. Most of the experts agreed we have at least three master sculptors - Christopher Georgesco, Gessco Cocteau and Tony and Karen Barone– all working locally out of their studios/homes. But when you ask those experts which painter has reached international acclaim and who’s work is coveted by both public and private collectors, Doran’s name jumps to the top of the list. Doran, now a vibrant 77 years old, moved to the desert in 2003 after living in Hollywood since 1970. He was born and raised outside New York City, earned a scholarship to the Parsons School of Design and later attended Kent State University. He studied with Theodore Stamos at the Art Students League in New York City where he lived and painted from 1960 to 1970 until he finally pulled up stakes and moved to California. However, he grew tired of the constant marine

Doran knew at the tender age of five that he was artistic, but it wasn’t until he turned 10 that his path was etched in stone. “My sixth grade teacher, Mrs. Brumble, was the best teacher I ever had. She’s the first one who ever told me ‘You’re an artist,’” he said during an recent interview at his home. “She let me use her oils and would tell me that if I wanted “On the Porch” to stay inside and draw, instead of taking

decades ago. Today, his original works fetch between $1,500 to $4,000 and art collectors from all over the world seek him out. He and Eva were both shy about sharing who his clients are, but they did mention actress Cloris Leichman, Sam Winston (of Winston Tires) and Sky Dayton (of Earthlink.net) as a few notable private collectors. Color is very important in his work, creating the overall harmony as well as the emotional impact. He said he “uses color to control the imagined space in a painting through the depth of perception that different colors can produce.” However, he dedicated two solid years (1996-97) to nothing but black and

white paintings. “I did that to strengthen the drawing. Sometimes you try to do too much, so I forgot about color and relied on the drawing. It was a good exercise in contrast that paid off,” he said. When you look around his home and studio it’s apparent that he likes to paint the human body. “Beautiful people inspire me because I see their physical beauty as a reflection of a spiritual awareness which communicates to me. Painting the (human) figure has always been paramount with me, but how I went about it changed over the years. Early on De Kooning’s action paintings influenced me, and later the child-like freshness of Picasso’s drawings helped me to render the figure the way I wanted to portray it. “In reality there have been many artists that have helped my art to evolve. The Dutch painters Rembrandt and Van Gogh taught me a lot about portrait painting. From the French painters Cezanne and Bonnard I learned about structure and color. Now, I’m using all of these to convey my message in the pictures I paint. “I’m also a firm believer in having fun. If it isn’t fun, I don’t do it. That’s the way I view my art. I may have something I want to say, but I insist on having fun while saying it.

‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ Save the World By Theda Kleinhans Reichman “Marvel’s The Avengers,” a superhuman cinematic force, has already earned well over $1.3 billion worldwide. The film’s popularity is driven by a Marvel Comics fan base of global proportions-fans who really dig action characters like Iron Man, Captain America and the Hulk to name but a few. In the film, the Super-Hero team of a lifetime is assembled by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), director of the international peace-keeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (For trivia buffs S.H.I.E.L.D stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division). The world is on the brink of total disaster when an unexpected enemy emerges. To avert the impending doom, Fury finds himself in need of a team. To that end he spans the globe to recruit such iconic Marvel Super Heroes as Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.),

off to a rousing start as outer-space aliens seek to enter earth’s atmosphere just as an extraterrestrial energy source known as Tesseract has started to act up earth. For some reason we have this particle here under the supervision and care of Nick Fury. When the Tesseract comes to pulsating life it’s sheer energy allows the aliens to break through earth’s protective shield. As the portal that separates earth from the other side of space opens up the Norse god Loki (Tom Hiddleston) enters our atmosphere, prepared to take over earth with the help of the shadowy aliens. Loki tells a startled crowd in New York: “You yearn for subjugation, you are made to be ruled.” Then he wields his scepter of special power and kills many in his sights. He also uses the scepter’s power to turn S.H.I.E.L.D’s archer Hawkeye into his brainwashed accomplice and tool It turns out that evil Loki is also Thor’s brother, but Thor is quick to tell the other Super Heroes called in to save the world that “Loki is adopted.” What adds to the action and sci-fi battles is the humor throughout. Of course the funniest and most sarcastic hero is Iron Man, beautifully brought to comic-book style life by Robert Downey, Jr. Throughout the film, even in the most dire situations, Whedon finds ways to make us laugh with crisp quips and dialogue. At one point, as Loki confronts Iron Man with taunts that human forces can’t

defeat him, Iron Man tells him that if all else fails “We’ve got the Hulk.” But mild mannered Bruce Banner has tried to leave his Hulk persona behind. He has carefully kept his rage under control by doing good work as a medical doctor in the slums of Calcutta. When found and asked to serve, Banner is willing, but wonders what will happen if the other Super Heroes don’t join him in the fight. Even he just can’t do it alone. With the fate of the Earth hanging in balance, these extra special guys join forces, but melding these diverse individual into a team isn’t an easy task since Super Heroes also have Super egos--especially rich business man Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man who tells the others that Banner has “breathtaking anger management issues.” That is true, but usually mild mannered Banner only gets green and nasty when angered beyond his breaking point. Along with the laughs there are spectacular, and truly fun-filled action sequences that light up the screen as these super guys take on super villains. They may have anger and ego issues, but when push comes to shove they unite as oneand when that happens they become the unstoppable “Avengers.” You don’t have to be a comic book fan to have fantastic fun seeing this action packed adventure. Note, the film is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout.

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans. CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether. Over 200,000 families, located throughout the U.S. have regained financial independence with CreditGUARD’s licensed, bonded and insured service. CreditGUARD of America has received high marks in consumer surveys showing high consumer satisfaction and confidence. The CreditGUARD debt management program can actually turn a person’s life around. One such case is Sandra L. who proclaimed “CreditGUARD cut my monthly payment by $656 and saved me over $29,206.53 in interest. They saved my way of life and gave me back my piece of mind! Now I can see myself on my way to becoming debt free.” or Jeffery C. who said “CreditGUARD of America helped me consolidate 3 of my credit cards into one affordable payment. They are now saving me nearly $200 a month. Now I will be debt free in 2 years or less” Certified Credit Counselors at CreditGUARD of America provide Debt Relief Consultations at no charge, when you call 1-888-459-3044.

Vows With Vision, Save Marriages “An exchange of trust occurs when vows are present.” By Terrance K. Phillips

“Divorce is never a solution to unresolved conflict.” If you lose the race, why blame your shoes? Couples in troubled relationships do just that—they find a reason to divert a consequence away from themselves, a probable co-conspirator. It always takes two people to cause a marriage failure. Couples in marriages that thrive and survive, are vigilant in honoring their vows! In 1944, only 1.7 percent of all marriages in the U.S. ended in divorce. Americans are now faced with the stunning reality that marriages today have become a coin flip—50/50. What has changed? A failed marriage occurs when vows are vaporized! Vo w s a r e n o t words—vows are commitments. D i s re g ard you r vows and you cast aside your honor. Marriage i s n ot ju s t a n advanced form of liking someone it’s giving your heart to another with no fear of its safe return. When you hear the term “save my marriage,” this indicates there is trouble lurking within the relationship, a relationship of two p eople who supposedly, loved one another at one time. But those who marinate in their marriages receive more flavorful benefits, than those seeking a fast food fix. Marriage means commitment. Marriage means trusting your spouse with your own worst attributes without fear. Marriage means combining the actions of two people into one cohesive and successful couple. An exchange of trust occurs when vows are present. Couples, who create their own, “minimarriage seminars,” by communicating to

one another for one-hour per day—stay together! Communication is all about listening, not talking. Communication is most effective when leaning forward, holding hands and staring directly into the eyes of the other. Just as your eyes have vision, so do your actions. There are no marriages absent of some degree of conflict. A conflict is not a reason to throw in the towel and walk away. A conflict occurs when two points are not in harmony with one another. Just as in music, one wrong note struck on a piano during a song containing a thousand notes, does not taint the remaining 999 correct notes. Don’t focus on one wrong note focus on the melody, harmonies and instrumentation—the entire symphony. Conflict is oftentimes caused by doubt. Doubting within your relationship is the disease of the inquisitive. It is born of darkness and re-enforces the vague, unsettled and the unclear. The act of doubting each other in a relationship is a weakness on both sides and an instigator of all quarrels. Doubt can be silenced through engaging communication. If you defer to silence, anger and the lack of action to work THROUGH your conflict, you have cast those noble vows aside. Remember: What you resist—will persist! Yo u m a s u J. Siewe, Ph.D, MPH of Oklahoma State University, agrees with my philosophy, “Divorce is never a solution to unresolved conflict.” Resolving conflict is one of life’s greatest pleasures and should never be considered drudgery; rather, an opportunity. The faith that springs from resolving conflict is often the strongest and best asset in a relationship. Terrance K. Safety Awareness

Private Security Companies Good Investment or Waste of Money? By Charles Bennett Jr. There are a few common reasons why businesses hire private security companies. One reason is the thought that a security guard’s presence will stop theft and other crimes. The other reason is that private security companies have insurance policies that would cover lawsuits and judgments. However, keep the following information in mind when, or better yet, before hiring a private security company. Nearly all private security companies advertise that their “guards” are highly trained and certified. However, in most cases, that means they are trained and licensed by the state minimum requirements which are a background check through the FBI and Department of Justice, a 40 hour course of required training (eight hours of training prior to being assigned a post, 16 hours within the first 30 days and another 16 hours within six months) and a written exam. In most cases, security companies are licensed to administer the training. What many times ends up happening is that the actual training time is a few hours at best and the “guard” is allowed to use the book during the test. Sometimes they do not even receive any training time and are just given the book to use to take the test! Keep in mind however; this is not always the case; there are some companies that do the training as required. Further, most security companies do not provide any additional or continual training. According to the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Service (BSIS), a security guard’s job is to protect persons and/or property and prevent theft, with an emphasis on prevention. However, most security companies have a “hands off ” policy. What this means is that the security guards cannot get involved in anything. For example, if someone walks into a convenience store and walks out with a case of beer in each hand, the security guards only course of action is to call the police or call their company who will decide whether or not to call police. The reason for this is because the security company doesn’t want the liability risk of a lawsuit or to have to pay a security guard who gets hurt on the job. With that in mind, a business’s own employees can do exactly the same thing. However, the BSIS does offer guidelines for security guards to make arrests, as California law (Penal Code 834) allows for citizens to make lawful arrests. Lack of training plays a major role in fear of lawsuits for security companies. Many security companies do not provide training other than what the state requires and even

What many times ends up happening is that the actual training time is a few hours at best and the “guard” is allowed to use the book during the test that sometimes is not administered as it should be. Proper screening and training can be time consuming and expensive, especially when security contracts generally go to the lowest bidder. As with anything else, you get what you pay for. On average, security companies charge in the area of $14 per hour for unarmed security guards. The security guard will probably only get about $9.50 on average. For armed security, the average charged is $15.50 per hour and the security guard will get around $12. That’s not very much money left over to train someone who carries a weapon that has the potential to kill someone. If a security company charges under $14 per hour for an armed security guard or under $13 per hour for unarmed security, there is good reason to be suspicious as to why the fee is so low. It is not uncommon for security companies to operate without a license or

insurance, have unlicensed security guards or employ illegal immigrants, most of which do not even speak English. This is generally what is happening if a security company charges lower than average rates. If a security company does not have insurance, any loss, judgments or damages will be the responsibility of the business. Additionally, there are security companies out there that when issued a judgment in court will file bankruptcy and open under a new name. Some companies offer patrol services and alarm response. The problem with patrol services is that in most cases one patrol vehicle has a large area to patrol and usually a set schedule of patrol which allows thieves and vandals to do their handy work. And the problem with alarm response is that as with a patrol, the area to cover is so big that local police usually arrive first. Some smaller companies go as far as having an alarm company call a security supervisors cell phone, who may be at home, then calls a security guard at home to have them go check the location in their private vehicle.

Most security companies advertise security consulting services. Every security company in the Coachella valley that offers consulting services also provides security services. The problem with this is that in most cases, their hidden agenda is to get business owners to hire their company to perform security services, not to design the best security plan that meets an individual business’s needs. It is highly suggested that one do their homework prior to hiring a security company. Some things to require of a security company are: proof of security license (Private Patrol Operator-PPO); liability insurance; workers compensation insurance; drug screening policy at hiring and post-incident; security officer license and permits; and proof of state and federal tax identification. For more information on security plans, if security guards are needed or how to hire the right security company, contact The Moneé Group at info@themoneegroup. com or call (760) 342-2977.

Trees To Help You Save Money by Chris Hermann, RLA/ASLA Did you know that tree placement can assist in the cooling of your home, and therefore save you money on your energy bill? This is something to think about during these hot summer months and plan for planting in the fall. Trees have many roles in our lives, including creating an aesthetically pleasing landscape and conserving resources. Landscape trees absorb carbon dioxide as well as reducing other particulate pollutants,

Desert Museum, Cercidium hybrid

trees is a great asset to your home during the summer months, the deciduous to semideciduous nature of desert adapted trees lend themselves to be the perfect companion in the winter, as their canopy will reduce, thereby assisting in the allowing the sun to warm the building during the winter months. A study by Simpson and McPherson at the USDA, Center for Urban Forest Research at the University of California at Davis, developed the following recommendations when planting trees for energy conservation: 1. Single trees should be located to provide maximum shade to west or southwest exterior windows. Alternative choices are east and northwest, and where solar panel access isn’t a consideration, southeast and south. 2. The largest windows without existing shading devices, with the preferred orientations listed above, should be the first choice for shading. For windows with shading devices, those with darker colors benefit most from shading. 3. Additional trees should be located to shade remaining windows on the west and southwest sides first, following by the east side, and then the alternative locations listed above. 4. Shade tends to diminish as buildingto-tree distance increases. Trees should be planted so that at maturity the edge of the canopy is very close to the building wall, consistent with other restraints, such as access and fire safety considerations.

and studies show they can also reduce summer cooling costs quite a bit. Research has shown that trees shading a west exposure from the afternoon sun have the greatest impact on energy savings. The age and size of the tree is a factor, as younger trees shade less area than older trees with larger crowns. If you have the room, you can also increase the savings by planting multiple trees. Trees should be planted so that the edge of the established canopy will be very close to the building. It is tempting to plant young trees too close to the structure, but it is very important to take into consideration the size of the canopy at maturity, as not doing so can create problems with branches damaging the roof or other parts of the home. Great trees to consider for your summer shading purposes are: acacia smallii, acacia stenophylla (shoestring ac aci a), cercidium hy br id “D es er t Mu s e u m” ( t h or n l e s s p a l o v e rd e ) ,

the difficulties of aging. A4M holds trade shows for physicians interested in anti-aging medicine. The American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes neither anti-aging medicine nor the A4M’s professional standing. Last, but not least, we come to the reports of June 2012 that a team of scientists from Osaka University in Japan, led by Professor Kazunan Komuro, has found a protein component of the human immune system, the C1q protein, directly responsible for aging. The C1q protein, the researchers say, is specifically to blame for living cells getting old and, when removed, those same living cells become immortal. The C1q protein was earlier thought to be merely a building block in the immune system’s ability to destroy harmful bacteria. Having established the protein’s true role, however, the scientists claim this discovery is the key to everlasting life. However, by putting C1q to sleep, thereby slowing or stopping the aging process, scientists also have found that they simultaneously

destroy the ability of the immune system to protect the body from harmful bacteria. Therefore, this is not a desirable way to end death. Therefore, the search for true life extension continues and the reason why I write this column continues.
