DHS Police Chief Accepts Position in Petaluma New Chief To Be Promoted from the Ranks DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA - Police Chief Patrick Williams announced last week that he would be resigning his position on Aug. 13 to accept the Police Chief position in Petaluma, California. City Manager Rick Daniels reluctantly accepted his resignation and initiated a recruitment process that focuses on an internal promotion. Chief Williams has served the city for five years beginning in June 2007. He was not only Police Chief, but Assistant City Manager for all Public Safety services including Police, Animal Control, Code Enforcement, Graffiti Abatement, and Fire Protection. Chief Williams managed the largest portion of the city’s workforce and budget. “I have never worked with a finer public servant than Patrick Williams. His tireless and imaginative work to improve the lives of the good and decent people of Desert Hot Springs was monumental and established the new baseline. He continuously provided the City Manager and Council with Best Practices policies and programs. His years on the San Jacinto City Council gave him great perspective on the needs of the elected officials that consider his recommendations,” said Daniels. “While we are momentarily saddened that Chief Williams is leaving the city, we are quick to wish him, Shirley, and his family, as well as the city of Petaluma great success and prosperity in the future. The city’s most recent gains in economic development rests on the foundation of a safer community for our residents and businesses,” said Daniels. “Patrick leaves behind a great legacy of building the best police department with the most highly qualified officers in the Coachella Valley and perhaps in all of California as witnessed by 2010 and 2011 awards and recognitions from the Regional Community Policing Institute, California Police Chiefs Association and the California Police Officers Association for Community Policing and Ethics,” said Daniels. “The city’s history will have a chapter on the improvements to public safety under the guidance of Chief Williams that will include significant crime reduction, enhanced parolee supervision, solving cases and securing convictions in court,” said Mayor Yvonne Parks. Russell Martin, Chairman of the Desert Hot Springs Public Safety Commission said, “As

Desert Hot Springs, CA - Occupy Coachella Valley received a unanimous vote of support from the DHS city council last week when they voted 5-0 to support the protest movement’s efforts against foreclosures throughout the Valley. Desert Hot Springs joins the cities of Palm Springs and Coachella in supporting the group. “We thank you for supporting Occupy Coachella and commend the decision. It’s been a long road to travel but the road belongs to us,” said Melina Lobel-Karimi, spokeswoman for Occupy

Coachella. The group of all volunteers started to organize in September 2011 after the Occupy New York City protest group gained nationwide support and publicity “Our movement morphed and is gaining in popularity each day,” Lobel-Karimi said after the city council vote. Inside the council chambers the mood was ‘co-operative” among the five city council members. “The (banking) rules are suppose to be applied to everyone equally,” said Councilman

Councilman Adam Sanchez said he was happy to see “partisanship” among council members on this highly public issue against big corporations and banking tactics. “We are a small group, trying to fight some of the biggest banks in the world and we appreciate any support the community could give to us,” said Robert Terry, spokesman for the group. Focus on Asia by Sherman Fridman Mention Shanghai to anyone over the age of 30 and chances are they’ll conjure up images of red lanterns and walled compounds, women with bound feet walking with dainty pigeonsteps and men wearing floor-length silk coats strolling imperiously along cobblestone streets, expressionless, with arms folded across their chests. But they, and decades of motion picture stereotypes, would be wrong. Today’s Shanghai is a vibrant, pulsating city on steroids, with 11 distinct subway lines built since 1995, and a still under-construction commercial center boasting skyscrapers, luxury shops and restaurants that rival, if not surpass, those found in New York. The energy in this metropolis is palpable and is best experienced at night as the downtown high-rise buildings seem to be competing against one another for the most impressive displays of colored lights highlighting their external surfaces. We were in Shanghai to board the luxurious M/V Silver Whisper, one of the half dozen, all-inclusive, six-star, mid-size floating country clubs that define the experience of Silversea Cruises and its attentive, nearly oneto-one staff-to-passenger ratio. The Whisper was scheduled to call at various south-China and Vietnamese ports after leaving Shanghai, but a combination of unbelievably thick fog along the Vietnam coast and the need to divert from our course, on two separate occasions, to evacuate an ill crew member and passenger, left our original itinerary in shambles. However, it left us with admiration for the skill of the crew and some

The hustle and bustle of Nha Trang is offset by the pristine beauty of Halong Bay and its nearly 3,000 limestone islands that rise out the sea, covering more than a 580-square mile area. The best way to view these islands, and not get lost while doing so, is by taking a guided tour aboard one of the tourist junks lining the harbor. After millions of years of erosion there are now countless nooks and crannies on the various islands to explore, as well as the secluded beaches that lie at the base of steep forest canopies. One can, weather and junk captain permitting, get off the boat, step between the open jaws of stalactites and stalagmites and enter a world of timeless grottoes, some of which are quite cavernous, while others force entrants to bend at the waist in order to venture inside. Any 12-day cruise featuring five days at sea, three of them consecutive, will test the mettle of even the most ardent cruise traveler. But whether it be the variety of exercise machines in the fitness center the array of sensuous treatments found in the fully equipped Silversea Signature Spa. Don’t miss the live stage entertainment, movies – in the ship’s theater or the privacy of your suite lectures, demonstrations, classes or just relaxing in the lap of luxury with a good book attended to by the friendly, unobtrusive international staff, the days pass by all too quickly. While the Silversea’s six luxury cruise ships are essentially all-inclusive and serve complimentary fine wines and spirits, one would be remiss not to avail themselves of an intimate dining experience (there are only six tables) in the ship’s ultra-gourmet Le

A floating village in Halong Bay, Vietnam luxury spa amenities are all items one would expect to find on the world-ranked best ships of Silversea. I’m impressed by the unexpected; and Silversea did not disappoint. The first night aboard I went to dinner leaving my reading glasses on the desk in my suite. When I returned two hours latter I noted the turn-down service, slippers along side of the bed and chocolates on the nightstand.

I couldn’t find my glasses. Finally, I spied a neatly folded square of eyeglass cleaning cloth on the desk blotter and underneath, my glasses, and for the next 11 nights that would be where I found my glasses: on the desk, under the neatly folded cleaning cloth; a Silversea example of how great experiences can come from paying attention to the little surprises in life.

The Beach Boys, ASIA and Zac Brown Band Deliver Great Summertime Albums The Beach Boys and ASIA are celebrating big anniversaries with epic releases while the genre-defying Zac Brown Band is ‘Uncaged’ on its latest studio album. Artist: The Beach Boys

Artist: ASIA

Album: That’s Why God Made the Radio (Capitol Records) You might be interested in buying this if you like: The Beach Boys’ previous albums or Jan & Dean. Tell me more: All the surviving Beach Boys (Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, Bruce Johnston) have used the occasion of their 50th anniversary as a band to surprise everybody with the release of a new full-length studio album that mostly picks up where the surf music pioneers left off with their wonderful late ‘60s material. From the infectious title track “That’s Why God Made the Radio” to the affecting “Shelter” and breezy “Isn’t It Time” to the

Album: XXX (Frontier Records) You might be interested in buying this if you like: Yes, Rush or King Crimson Tell me more: The aptly-titled “XXX” celebrates ASIA’s 30th anniversary with an outstanding batch of songs that equal and maybe even outdistance the gems compiled by the quartet on 2010’s “Omega.” Simply put, prog rock has never sounded as inviting or thrilling as the brew concocted by singerlush masterpiece “Summer’s Gone,” few knew one of America’s greatest-ever bands was ready to ride one more wave. And who doesn’t love the group’s shimmering vocal harmonies? An endless summer, indeed.

bassist John Wetton, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Carl Palmer and keyboardist Geoff Downes. From the breathtaking, “Tomorrow the World” and fiery “No Religion” to the confessional “Face on the Bridge,” ASIA still has plenty to say and the musical firepower to get it done. The deluxe edition of “XXX” includes a CD with the album and bonus tracks as well as a DVD with several videos and a documentary on the making of the new album.

Album: Uncaged (Atlantic/Southern Ground) You might be interested in buying this if you like: Pirates of the Mississippi, Great Plains, Dave Matthews Band, or Jimmy Buffett Tell me more: Of today’s so-called “modern country” artists, none are better than the Zac Brown Band. With the release of the seven-member troupe’s latest disc “Uncaged” released on July 10, it’s clear that the ZBB is that rare ensemble able to blend commercial instincts with genuine artistry. While “Uncaged” is only the ZBB’s third full-length studio album, following 2008’s “The Foundation” and 2010’s “You Get What You Give,” there is a maturity to the songs and sonic cohesiveness despite the wide range of genres explored across the 11-track disc. The tuneful “Jump Right In,” exhilarating title track and beautiful acoustic ballad “Sweet Annie” are among the many standouts on this terrific album.

Desert Water Expert Found Dead in Pool Jim Tyers Remembered Fondly by Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRING, CA – Everybody in town knew him. At least everyone who has a pool, spa, well or pond on their property. They knew Jim Tyers as the Pool Guy - but he was way more than that to this desert region known worldwide for its healing waters and natural hot minerals springs. In a story only fitting of a golfer dying on a golf course, Tyers was found daed in a local private home’s spa at the age of 82 on Saturday morning, June 23. Everyone who knew him said his death was ironic considering his passion in life was thae waters. James Tyers was born on May 12, 1930 in Inglewood, California. He graduated from Inglewood High School, served in the Air Force in the engineer corps running communications lines during the Korean War. He later worked for an oil company until following his passion for the waters, he formed his own swimming pool maintenance and repair company and moved to the desert in 1977. “His whole life was dedicated to the waters,” said Mary Anne Shutes, 81, a DHS resident, a high school classmate and lifelong friend for

Jim and Aileen Tyers more than 60 years. “Jim was an expert on hot water pools. His work was important to him. He used to say, ‘Thank God I can still go to work everyday,’” Shutes recalled. And he did go to work everyday until the day he died at 82. “That’s pretty impressive,” she added. “He could have retired many times but he loved his work so much, and the people he worked with. He like to solve problems. He knew every well in town.”

Others in the community agreed. Marie Lease, General Manager of The Springs spa said “Jim had an uncanny knowledge about the waters in the area. We’re going to miss him dearly.” Tyers is survived by his son, Michael Tyers, 56, of Whidbey Island, Washington along with grandson, Seth, 15 and Dorothy (Michael’s wife of 30 years). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Desert Crest County Club Motor Home Park located at 69400 S. Country Club Drive. A gathering hosted by hotelier Mike Bickford will be held at the Miracle Springs Resort Hotel and Spa immediately following the service. The hotel is located at 10625 Palm Drive in DHS. Shutes recalled that years ago, Tyers gave a presentation to the Miracle Springs Water District on the history of the springs, with maps showing the extent of the underground water system. “He had a fantastic grasp of the history of the area and even understood the relationship between earthquakes and their connection with the water. “He use to tell me that every time the Earth moved, it would change the water table. One day, he showed me a 2-inch crack in the roadway along Varner near Mountain View and explained that it took 30 years for that separation to grow. “He knew everything about the waters, everything that anybody knows. He’s going to be missed,” she said. And indeed he will be missed by every body who owns, operates or enjoys the water here in the desert. Calls and emails began streaming into this newspaper’s office shortly after his death. DHS City Manager Rick Daniels sent out the first official announcement of Tyer’s passing saying, “It’s a sad, sad day for the city. He is going to be sorely missed. He knew everything about the waters. He knew every valve, every well, every spring in the area. His knowledge stretches 50 years. He’s going to be hard to replace,” Daniels said.

Living Longer

The Secrets Told

How Apple Cider Vinegar Will Slow Your Aging By Art Kunkin, Mr. Life Extension I am still convinced that ordinary tap water is a great health hazard. Let me explain why and offer the old folk remedy of natural apple cider vinegar as a solution to the hardening of the arteries that greatly contributes to the aging that kills everyone today. All the minerals found in the body originate in the soil and in the solid stones of Mother Earth. However, we can’t directly eat this earth. If we did, if we normally took inorganic earth minerals directly into the body, we would eventually turn into stone ourselves. The tubes in which our blood flows, the arteries and veins themselves, would become clogged up, preventing the blood from carrying the food nutrients where needed. However, I have learned that harmful inorganic earth minerals are transformed by plants into body-friendly organic minerals. The process is this. The minerals of the earth, already dissolved by water and chewed up into tiny particles by microscopic bacteria living in the earth, are picked up by the roots of the plant and carried into the body of the plant. Meanwhile, the plant is breathing carbon dioxide through its leaves from the air and

separating that gas into its two components, carbon and oxygen. The plant then takes the separated carbon molecules and attaches them to the earth minerals, making them carbon compounds that are then compatible as food with the carbon compounds found in our human body. This miraculous process then concludes with the separated oxygen molecules being breathed out by the plant into the air, available then to be breathed in by human lungs. Thus the inorganic (non-carbon) earth minerals inside the plant are transformed into organic (carbon) minerals that the human body can assimilate. Unfortunately, when we drink the tap water in our homes that has only been sanitized to kill harmful bacteria, we are taking the earth minerals dissolved in that water directly into our bodies. Some of those minerals are then flushed out of the body by the water normally eliminated by the body but the remaining tiny particles of inorganic minerals over the years turn into stones: hardening and blocking the arterial blood vessels, stiffening arthritic joints, producing hearing loss, emphysema of the lungs, glaucoma of the eyes, kidney stones and gall stones. Even the brain can be partially turned into stone by this process over

the course of years. The obvious solution is to get as much water and minerals as possible through plant foods and, if one is still thirsty, drink steam distilled water. Avoid the tap water and ordinary purified bottled water that contains harmful inorganic minerals. And if you have heard bad things about distilled water, go on the Internet and find Dr. Andrew Weil’s essay,“Will Distilled Water Kill You.” This essay by the renowned medical doctor concludes by saying, “Distilled water not only isn’t dangerous, it’s the purest form of water. It’s also the kind of water I drink.” However, the question remains that since most of us have been drinking tap water all of our lives and have harmful inorganic minerals inside our bodies already coagulating into stones, what can we do about those stony deposits? I have learned that the simple, safe, inexpensive answer is regularly drinking sweetened apple cider vinegar (ACV). This dissolves and harmlessly flushes out the inorganic minerals already accumulated in the body. This simple remedy has been part of health folklore for thousands of years. Take one or two teaspoons of ACV in a glass (8 ounces) of distilled water,. Sweeten as necessary with

honey, and drink at least three times a day. Although the ACV is acidic, inside of the body it beneficially turns alkaline. My own experience is that ACV with honey is not at all bad tasting and is quite refreshing as an iced drink. I would suggest that if you are computer literate go online and Google apple cider vinegar to get more information. Also there are a few small books on ACV available at most health food stores. Drum Circle Under The Stars Good For the Soul

JOSHUA TREE, CA – The Joshua Tree Retreat Center at the Institute of Mentalphysics will host another one of their successful community drum circles on Wednesday, July 18 from 7 – 9:00 p.m. The gathering, facilitated by well-known Morongo Basin percussionist Sam Sloneker, will celebrate the New Moon and will be held outdoors on the patio in front of the center’s Sanctuary, the building with the spire. “Summer is definitely here, and I’m looking forward to our playing together on a balmy HiDesert evening under our beautiful canopy of stars,” said Sloneker. “Legend identifies the New Moon as a particularly auspicious time—a time of birth and beginnings, a time to plant seeds, to start new projects, to begin relationships— and it often brings us a burst of dynamic and creative energy. “All are welcome and can benefit from participating—from beginning beginners to seasoned professional musicians. Along with group drumming, where there is lots of room for self-expression, we will do some simple and fun exercises designed to enhance our playing and listening skills and to increase our awareness of our vital life energies. “It’s a wonderful time for a community drum circle, and drumming together is an experience that can take us all right back to our creative and expressive roots, so come play with us, and bring your family and friends to share in our merriment.”

Participants are encouraged to bring drums, shakers, tambourines, etc. A number of instruments will also be available at the event. There is no charge to attend, although a suggested donation of $5 per participant or $10 per family will be gratefully received and appreciated. Studies have shown participation in group drumming to offer a number of worthwhile benefits, including artistic self-expression, community connection and interaction, an expanded sense of self and heightened sense of belonging, increased rapport with others, relief of stress, emotional balancing, and strengthening of the immune system. An article and video from the August 2010 Circle can be found at www.jtrcc.org/ blog/2010/8/25/the-desert-night-is-filled-withdrumming.html. Roger Hopkins – Master Debunks Ancient Alien Astronaut Theory for Pyramid Building

Stone furniture and water fountain Photos and story by Jackie Devereaux property to cut, grind, chisel and saw through granite rock and basalt boulders. and boulders weighing up to 300 tons and more. Hopkins, one of the world’s master stone sculptors, is best known for his work on the KPBS television series, “This Old House,” and the “Nova” series on building Egyptian pyramids and raising obelisks. It is estimated there are 200 stone sculptors around the world. Hopkins is ranked #1 of those 200. The first thing we noticed at 7:30 a.m., is a 23-ton boulder sitting strapped down inside the back of a tractor trailer. He said it was waiting to be driven to Porcupine Creek for a unnamed celebrity. Moving large tonnage boulders is second nature to Hopkins who worked on Egyptian monuments and could have made a nice life in Egypt with his Egyptian wife, Iglal, if the

pollution there weren’t so bad there, he said. Hopkins married Iglal, an accomplished ballerina ranked 5th in the world, in August 1995. They currently live in Palm Desert but he works at his Desert Hot Springs workshop. Hopkins starts work early in the morning especially during the summer at this one and a half acre open-air studio with his three Shepherd-mixed dogs, Betty, Charlie and Bob. All the dogs were strays that wandered into his yard. They stayed and over the years the dogs each graduated up to air conditioning comforts back in the Palm Desert home. Hopkins first rose to national fame in the 1980s when home builder Bob Villa asked him to work on “This Old House” as their master stone mason. Hopkins accepted the challenge

Art Around Town

Stone Sculptor

and worked for 15 years on the show, along with master carpenter Norm Abrams. Hopkins’ roots are in Boston where his stone mason work began four decades ago. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Oriental Horticulture from the University of Massachusetts, then started a business with a lawn mover and rock moving equipment in the early 1970s. He specialized in water features, fountains, waterfalls, stones ponds and “naturalistic gardens,” he said. He worked for the rich and famous, and the not so rich and famous, as well as those who would become famous. Hopkins recalled a time when he worked with a lot of other contractors remodeling the home of Mitt Romney. Hopkins recalled that Romney’s wife, Anne, took his child by the hand in the morning and kept the kids busy all day while he worked. Then Romney himself ran down the driveway with a check in hand to make sure Hopkins was paid. “I didn’t know he’d be running for president,” he said. “He was just a regular guy back then.” Not all of Hopkins clients are rich or famous, and some of his works do get delivered to trailer parks, he added laughing. But he wasn’t laughing when he showed us a gigantic cut sandstone rock standing 12 feet tall and 7 feet wide that was designed as a sign for a business in Palm Desert. However, certain Riverside County officials determined this piece of art did not meet the county’s specifications and denied its installation. “Sandstone rock is murder on tools,” he said shaking his head, and changing the subject away from government and the discussion of art in pubic places. We turned around and there staring straight ahead is, “The Alien,” a 10 foot tall 3 feet wide granite rock shaped like an extraterrestrial alien from another galaxy. “Do you believe that ancient alien astronauts built the pyramids?” I asked. “That’s a bunch of hooey,” he said.

Hopkins doesn’t believe in ancient alien astronauts. How did they build the pyramids then? With rollers, he answered emphatically. At Aswan in Egypt, on the upper reaches of the Nile, ancient builders constructed a road out of rock that is 30 to 40 feet wide and seven miles long to move large rock masses, he said. “With 100 ton objects, you’d need a flat road and workers, pullers and big logs. Ancient alien theories are a bunch of hooey. It’s a new religion. We joke about it. One set of aliens came down and built this pyramid and another set came down with different designs. Turns out, they were crappy builders - roughly done blocks, problems with structure, lots of collapses. “If aliens can travel the Universe, why would they build such lousy buildings,” he said, noting that the early pyramids were either too steep and collapsed or built at different angles and collapsed. “They could have done a better job than that.”

Obelisks

Hopkins’ expertise on pyramids goes much deeper. He explained how the first three pyramids built were each very different designs. “Did they get visited by three different aliens?” he asked. “No,” he insisted. Instead he pointed out that just like in modern times, high unemployment leads to social unrest and any Egyptian pharaoh’s reign would be cut short if he didn’t give his people something to do. “When the Nile flooded the farmlands and people couldn’t work the fields, everyone built things instead, lots of things.” Hopkins explained how large, heavy stones can be moved more easily on water, so the pharaohs started huge building projects. He explained about pharoah Ramses II, who fought fiercely at the Battle of Kadish, and later enacted the first known peace treaty on the planet that held for 100 years. During that time, Ramses II built large tombs in the Valley of the Kings.

Arch at Canterra All this Egyptian history leads Hopkins to a commissioned job in 1991 to build a pyramid with a cantankerous “Nova” television crew filming it next to the Great Pyramid of Giza. He proudly explained that his “Nova” series was the first reality TV program ever. What he didn’t mention is that it was also the highest rated “Nova” series ever. “We had bad feelings with the camera crew,” he said. “They wanted to shoot just prior to sunset for the best light. Our stone crew started work well before dawn and were finished by the afternoon. Me and the camera crew didn’t see eye to eye,” he said raising an eyebrow. That was then and this is now. Hopkins currently is working an several stone art projects for clients all over the world. He has approximately 125 stone pieces installed in private homes inside the exclusive Big Horn Ranch in Palm Desert. He can be found by appointment only at his workshop and studio located at 123456 Dillon Road. At the Movies

Spielberg’s ‘War Horse’ Now on DVD By Theda Kleinhans Reichman If you love animals, horses in particular, Steven Spielberg‘s “War Horse” is a must see movie. This Oscar-nominated film, based on a novel by noted British children’s author Michael Morpurgo, was first a smash hit play in London before coming to Broadway where it won five Tony Awards in 2011. The stage version is now at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown Los Angeles till July 29. If you can’t get to L.A. to experience this amazing story on stage you can own or rent Spielberg’s film adaptation which is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Spielberg’s version, like the play, deals with the friendship between a young farm boy, Albert and his beautiful horse, Joey. When WWI erupts, the horse is sold to fight in battle. Heartbroken, Albert enlists in hopes of being reunited with Joey. The story then goes from the idyllic English countryside to battles in France and Germany as the horse brings out the best in every human he encounters. It is an extraordinary journey of courage and friendship as seen through the eyes of this unforgettable horse. “To me ‘War Horse’ is a timeless story about the sacrifices of love,” said Spielberg. “It‘s about the sacrifices a boy makes in a time of war to find his horse and the sacrifices the horse makes just trying to survive this dark episode in history. Throughout it all, their destines are entwined.” Noted British author Michael Morpurgo, who has written over 130 books in his career, published “War Horse” in 1982. His inspiration for the story came from a conversation he had with an aged veteran he met in a Devon pub who spoke to

His heartfelt novel was written for the screen by Lee Hall (“Billy Elliott”) and Richard Curtis, (“Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” “Love Actually” and “Notting Hill”). Spielberg’s film “War Horse” is a mythical journey that begins when Joey, the beautiful stallion and beloved pet, becomes a British cavalry horse and eventually rides into battle. During the course of his story we see how this loving animal brings out the best in the humans he encounters. We also experience war from the perspective of a different species as this courageous spirited horse silently, but soulfully struggles to find his way home. “The film doesn’t take sides,” said Spielberg. “It is really about how the characters relate to this horse. Horses have no politics; their main concern is for the care of their charges. And that is Morpurgo with great passion about the very important and that gives the story its incredibly heroic horses with whom he served in World War I. “This old man had tears in his eyes, talking about a relationship he had with a horse on the Western Front decades ago,” the author said. “ I learned that these horses were doing so much more than simply carrying soldiers or gun carriages. They deeply mattered to people.” As he did research for his story Morpurgo discovered that one million horses went into battle for the British during WWI, but only 62,000 animals returned. Horses were vital on all sides of the war and these valiant animals sacrificed, suffered and committed acts of bravery. The more he learned, the more he felt compelled to write about these forgotten equine heroes.

humanity amidst the war.” One of the scenes the director is most proud of takes place when a British soldier goes over the top of a trench, risking his life in No Man’s Land (an area of land between the British and German trenches.) As he tries to free the horse trapped in barbed wire he is joined by a German soldier who also wants to help the wounded animal. Jeremy Irvine, a 20 year old Briton who had grown up in a small country village, was cast in the role of Albert. The young actor had been a fan of the book “War Horse” since his mother first read it to him when he was 10. While the film is relatively bloodless, focusing more on the horse and his relationship with the humans he encounters, it is rated PG-13 for scenes of animal jeopardy that could be traumatic for very young viewers. The 4-disc combo pack for “War Horse” (2-disc Blu-ray +1 disc DVD+Digital Copy) has an abundance of extras that include “A Filmmaking Journey with Steven Spielberg” that gives the viewer insight into the filming of “War Horse.” You will learn about “Editing and Scoring,” “The Look,” “An .Extra’s Point of View” and much more. There is also a 2-disc combo pack as well as a 1-disc DVD, so there is a DVD combination to suit your needs and price range.

Astrological Affects - By Guru Ren Yogamaya, M.A. E-RYT 500

Sun In Cancer:

Life will now begin to be on the mend.

Most Affected are Cancer and all Water Signs. The month is in the sign of Cancer.

For Taurus: You can now move forward with your romantic or partnership plans as your ruling planet, Venus is once again direct and while Jupiter is in Gemini, it may expand the joy and take your relationships to the next level, the next realm.

For Cancer: All Moon themes such as sensitivity, moods, nurturing and stability will rule supreme until July 22. A more heightened awareness of emotions, sensitivity to heat, fondness of food and harmony. The best side of Cancer is seen in their caring demeanor, their display of compassion, dealing with family issues easily, their cozy home and their culinary talents. The key is to know when to let go, to balance your moods, to silence overt emotions at the appropriate time and to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: The Moon shines brighter this month. The divine feminine and the divine masculine energies in all people, nature, in Life, is found in the 2nd Chakra, the sacrum, abdomen, that also represents the element of Water, the sign of Cancer. We may feel more for others and for ourselves, cautious and protective. By using your awareness from divine guidance, the virtues of patience and observances will assist to bring solution to problems and healing. When in doubt stay positive, don’t whine or complain as it will only wear you out, and bring wrinkles and exhaustion. Celebrate this month by having more consideration of family members at home, enjoy water; the pool, the spa, the beach or trying Aquatic Pool Yoga. Best Sacred Geometry: Icosahedron (Water) Best Yantra: The colors Orange or Coral.

Mercury In Leo Most Affected are Leo, Gemini and Virgo. This transit began on June 25 and will continue until August 31. For Leo: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses enters your sign, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. The sign of Gemini or Virgo may figure more prominently. Do your presentation(s) before July 12, before Mercury goes retrograde. For Gemini: Expect fire and passion to fuel your ideas and communications. Along with Jupiter and Venus in your sign, everything is expanded; flirting now can mislead others by your words or actions, so be cool, be careful. For Virgo: Your mind may now guide you in a more passionate way. Your presentations may have a grand flair to them. For All Signs: Bold statements and creative ideas come on strong now. The past, retrograde planetary affects dim in comparison to the transformational powers of the Sun; the planet that represents Leo. The Challenge: If you do come on too strong, have no expectations; enjoy the process, and be prepared to explain yourself. The Best: Focus on the positive for best results.

Venus Direct Most affected are Gemini, Libra and Taurus. The Venus retrograde transit began on May 15 and turned direct on June 27. For Gemini: Venus continues direct in your sign until August 7 and brings a better balance or mend to your personal relationships and social interactions. Until July 14 when Mercury goes retro, you are primed to advance and get what you need. For Libra: Hopefully, you did not over-spend. If you did, begin a new budget to repay it. Any disappointments, delays or disagreements in your

For All Signs: The planet representing Love, beauty and the senses returns to its’ direct motion. While it may have been challenging for couples, it may have also helped to review the relationship with others, our values, the relationship with ourselves. The best outcome may have been: To have reconnected with some pleasures or certain people from the past, to re-experience, remind us of what didn’t work or to bring closure.

Week of July 5 – July 11: July 3 – Mars Into Libra Most affected are Libra and Aries. This transit will continue until August 23. For Libra: Mars enters your sign infusing more energy into your Life. If you’re not the physical type, you may suddenly feel like joining a gym or start walking on breaks or after work. Or if you are athletic, you may go to the next level up. The good news: Your sexual drive and physical stamina will be heightened and making decisions may become easier. The worst: You may find that you need to practice more patience. Use or consider techniques that help bring calm and balance to your metabolism. The sign of Aries may figure more prominently. For Aries: With other planetary affects involved, this may become a challenging time as you continue to forge ahead. The best is that there may be more flirtatious beauty coming your way. Stay on track. For All Signs: The details in the preparations and going over it again and again from the last eight months has brought us to new liberated heights. New contacts, reaching out to others, fighting for a good cause and finally putting your projects out there for the world to respond to are some accelerated characteristics of this transit. Warning: Please consider in letting go and let God, meaning, leave justice in the hands of the Universe.

Full Moon In Capricorn Most affected are Capricorn and All Earth Signs. For Capricorn: The Full Moon is in your sign and may bring an important personal issue into focus. Also, on that date began an improved climate surrounding your business goals. Any concerns that you have will be illuminated, so consider before you speak. For All Signs: Inner needs and outer responsibilities may be the theme from this Full Moon. Tough planetary affects from Uranus and Pluto may bring some chaos or disruption before we can begin anew. Try not to go to extreme with tactics; don’t misuse your power. Everyone has purpose; you are a part of the equation of the future. In your meditation, ask the Universe for guidance, connection and maternal support in assisting you in finding strength to release and to let go of people, places or things that are no longer serving you well in your Life. Best Mantra: AUM. Best Color: Violet or White.

July 12 - 18, 2012

by Jackie Devereaux DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA – In an unprecedented move, more than 70 hotels guests at the beleaguered Hyundae Hotel were told to pack up their things and leave in an orderly fashion by police Code Enforcement officers on June 21. The city was forced to take this drastic action because, “...there has been a blatant disregard for city policies with no business license, no TOT funds and no permits for construction,” said City Manager Rick Daniels in a telephone interview. ”The owner made changes to the property without due process. In places he breached the structural integrity of the building, eliminated firewalls and created a building that is unsafe for human occupancy,” Daniels added. “The city reviewed the situation two times before, but when busloads of people arrived on Thursday (June 21) we had to take action. Code Enforcement officers (along with others from the police department) cleared out the hotel, chained the doors shut and red tagged the building,” he said. And that’s not all. A prematurely released city manager report said an arrest warrant has been issued for the owner, Charles Yeh of Hyundae Group Inc., of Los Angeles. “That is not correct,” said Katie Singer, spokeswoman for the DHS Police Department and the Code Enforcement division. “The owner has since come forward and obtained a business license,” Singer said. “He is cooperating with code enforcement,” to reopen the hotel. This hotel has be plagued by past owners that have each progressively lowered the value of the property with shoddy construction and failure to comply with city codes. Add to that the public relations nightmare created by past management who called employees “...fat, lazy and stupid Americans.” This antagonistic attitude and alleged mistreatment of locals caused employees to take drastic measures and

picket the hotel in 2009. To add insult to injury, previous owner Mr. “T” from Georgia boldly told a local television news anchor that he had not paid more than $80,000 in TOT (Transit Occupancy Taxes) owed to the city. Because of past neglect on paying TOT fees, in another unprecedented move, city officials forced the owner to pay TOT fees with daily deposits at city offices. Calls and emails to Yeh’s office in Los Angeles have not been returned. Today, the 93-room hotel stands vacant

Hyundae Hotel gate chained with growing signs of vandalism and blight. What began as the Ponce de Leon hotel later became known as the Mineral Springs Hotel, distinctive for the architectural rock adorning the entrance and the interior of the lobby. The hotel sold in 2005 and was renamed La Toscana until it was sold to Mr. “T” who renamed it Hotel Shilla in honor of one of the finest hotels in Seoul, Korea. The once granite rocks were repainted white giving the hotel the appearance of a snow covered oasis. However, months later the hotel went into foreclosure. It again changed hands and was renamed The Sanctuary and managed by a firm out of Los Angeles for a time until it’s present incarnation as the Hyundae Hotel. In the past, the hotel operated a cafe and offered locals a popular cocktail lounge first named The Cave and later known as the Fireside Tavern. Unfortunately, both the cafe and tavern were removed by one of previous owners.

Zero Tolerance for Workplace Violence Who’s at Risk? “Working alone or in isolated areas pose a greater risk. The time of day, location and areas of higher crime rates can also increase ones chances of becoming a victim.” by Charles Bennett Jr. Do you have an unruly coworker? Do you walk on eggshells around a particular office staffer? Is there anyone at your workplace who breeds fear in people? If the answer to any one of these questions is “Yes,” then you’d better read this article, and better yet, post it at work. According to the US Department of Labor, Workplace Violence is defined as any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening, disruptive behavior that occurs at the workplace. That includes threats, verbal abuse, physical assaults and homicides. Violence in the workplace can affect and involve employers, clients, customers and visitors. Contrary to popular belief, workplace violence does not apply only to employees within a business. Homicide is the fourth leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the US, with shootings making up 10 percent of all work related deaths. Of the 4,547 fatal workplace injuries documented in 2010, 506 of those were homicides. Additionally, homicide is the leading cause of death among women in the workplace. Nearly two million workers report being victims of workplace violence every year in the US, however; many more go unreported. Workplace violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Research shows that those who exchange money with the public and those working with or around volatile, unstable people are at greater risk of becoming a victim of workplace violence. Other workers at a higher risk are: delivery drivers, health care professionals, public service workers, customer service representatives, Law Enforcement and those who work in an environment that serves alcohol. Additionally, working alone or in isolated areas pose a greater risk as well. The time of day, location and areas of higher crime rates can also increase ones chances of becoming a victim. For businesses looking to implement a policy or update their current policies regarding Workplace Violence, there are many things that can be done. To start, have a zero tolerance policy and makes sure all employees are aware of it. Have them read the policy and sign that they understand it. With new employees, this should be done at the time of hire. It is recommended that continual training is implemented so that employees are very familiar with the policy.

In addition, the policy should clearly state that any acts in contradiction to the policy will result in immediate termination and prosecution for appropriate offenses. What is more important is that businesses follow through on the violations. If employees see that no action is being taken, they will think that nothing will happen and possibly continue their behavior and others may feel that it is okay as well. If an employee is terminated for any reason, it is difficult to determine whether they will return in an attempt to retaliate. It is very important to document anything said or any gesture that may lead one to believe that there could be a possibility of retaliation. In addition, it is always a good idea to keep employee files up to date, documenting anything unusual, whether it is conduct, gestures or verbal. Included in a zero tolerance policy should be procedures for employees who feel threatened or have experienced any behavior that violates the policy. Additionally, create a procedure in which employees can report violations to the management, whether they are a victim or if they have witnessed a violation of the policy, in which case it would be beneficial for them to have a way to report it anonymously. Background checks are highly recommended, not only to reveal a criminal background, but to see if there is a pattern of violence or anything else that could invite potential violence or related conduct. Protecting employees is just as important as hiring the right employee. If the proper precautions are not taken, a business could be held liable if an unfortunate incident were to occur. In addition to concerns over worker

to worker violence, those same concerns should be considered for individuals outside the business. Whether it be a domestic or relationship issue involving an employee or a contractor, vendor, or delivery person,

it is just as much of a concern. Within a zero tolerance policy, there should also be procedures for employees to report information that involves someone outside of the business that could be a potential problem. With that in mind, it is highly recommended that signs be posted advising others that there is a zero tolerance policy for workplace violence. Businesses can protect themselves from disgruntled employees and also protect their employees from problems faced by others outside of the business. Under section 527.8 of the California Code of Civil Procedure, a business can get a restraining order for themselves or on behalf of an employee or multiple employees. This section is quite lengthy and detailed, however, it is highly recommended that businesses and employees alike review this code section. For more information on Violence in the Workplace, or if you need assistance implementing or updating a Workplace Violence zero tolerance policy, please contact The Moneé Group at info@themoneegroup. com or call (760) 342-2977.

Herbs in the Desert Edible Flowers

by Chris Hermann, RLA/ASLA In recent years there has been a huge refocus on sustainability. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, and it is based on a pretty basic principle: everything we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. To that end, many people are beginning to grow their own herbs, vegetables and fruits. This can be tricky business here in our subtropical desert, as with average summer highs of 107 degrees, it’s difficult to protect the plants from the blistering summer heat. Container gardening is a good way to carry your sustainability through the summer, and herbs are very happy in containers. Generally speaking, place them in an area that gets six to eight hours of sun, but is somewhat protected from the mid-to-late afternoon sun during summer. It is important to start out with good soil, and we recommend a mixture of organic potting soil and compost.

This aspect of culinary delight is often overlooked. As stated above, the chive flowers can be used (as can squash blossoms) but there are other edible flowers that are not usually considered food crops. It is important to note, however, that it is not recommended to eat flowers that are in florist arrangements, as they may have been treated with pesticides. Edible flowers that work well in our climate zone include: borage, calendula, nasturtium, pansy/viola, and dianthus. Generally, these are all considered winter/early spring annuals here in the desert, and they are not too picky about container size.

Rosemary

Basil Basil is a great herb for our area. In our zone it is a perennial (in colder climates it is an annual), and it likes heat and sun. There are many varieties to choose from with a varied range of flavors including lemon and cinnamon. For container gardening, plant in 16inch or larger plastic or glazed pots. It will do best once the nighttime temperatures exceed 60 degrees, as it is not a lover of the cool weather. Do not let soil dry out completely, and have them in fertile soil with good drainage. Fertilize once during the growing season. It is important to pinch out flower spikes as they form to prolong leaf production. The best leaves are from the younger stems that have not yet flowered.

Cilantro

Dill

Cilantro is an annual herb. It needs light shade in our climate to prevent bolting. Again, well-drained soil is a must. It is best grown from seed, and in our low desert area, the best time to plant the seeds is in the fall, as it will go to seed and die out in late spring to early summer. The plants grow very quickly. In a container, plant in a pot at least 12 inches wide and eight inches deep. Cilantro should be watered regularly, and you should snip the flower buds as they appear. If you end up with too much cilantro, you can always chop the leaves and freeze them for use later.

Another annual that does not last well through our summer as the dry weather makes dill bolt. It likes full sun, but protection from wind. If you are growing from seed, it is best to plant in late summer or fall, and the depth of the container is more important than the width. The container should be at least 12 inches deep. You should use a fully composted fertilizer prior to planting, and apply a complete fertilizer when the plants reach a foot in height. Dill will grow with only moderate water, but regular water is better.

This evergreen shrub does very well here in the desert, and there are a lot of different varieties to choose from. The small clusters of flowers bloom a lot of the year and attract bees, birds and butterflies. Good drainage is essential for this herb; if you are growing in the ground in a clay based area, lighten the soil with planting mix or compost. Once the plants are established, little water is needed, and an application of fertilizer in the spring is sufficient for its health. If you are planting in a container, it looks great to use an upright rosemary in the center (utilizing a container at least 18 inches in diameter) and plant trailing rosemary plants around the rim to spill over the sides. There are so many other herbs that work in our climate zone as well, but I do not have enough room to discuss them all in this column. A great resource if you are looking for more information is “Western Garden Book of Edibles” published by Sunset and available through book retailers. When you are utilizing Sunset’s books, please keep in mind that our climate zone is Sunset Zone 13. Thank you for checking in – I’ll be back again next week!
