Salton Sea, CA – Animal protectionists and environmental groups are popping champagne corks celebrating a recent land purchase that helps the endangered big horn sheep, other wildlife and sensitive desert habitat. A 2,105-acre desert ranch property, divided into two parcels, will be purchased in two phases. The first phase a 1,342 acre parcel located near the Salton Sea was once owned by timber billionaire Tim Blixseth. It has been designated as open habitat and “not just for the big horn sheep, it’s a balanced conservation effort in the valley,” said Kevin McKernan, executive director of the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy. The Trust for Public Land and Friends of the Desert Mountains obtained the properties that were offered to be sold to the highest bidder, McKernan said, noting that both
properties were slated for development before the 2008 market collapse. The two non-profits were able to respond faster than both the state and federal governments could in acquiring the lands. The larger property encompasses part of the ancient shoreline of Lake Cahuilla, a prehistoric lake larger than the Salton Sea that was an extension of the Sea of Cortez and reached the city of La Quinta, he said. Blixseth, a former charismatic Rancho Mirage resident and swanky socialite, owned the two properties consisting of another 763 acre parcel located west of State Highway 86 near the lake’s northwest shore. The larger property was purchased for $2.9 million with funds acquired under Proposition 84, an initiative passed by California voters in 2006. The acquired land lies within the
Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan and was deeded to the Coachella Valley Conservation Commission, an agency that oversees multiple species protection plans. The lands will be managed “co-operatively” with the Department of Fish and Game. Purchase of the additional 763 acres should be complete by Sept. 2012, McKernan said. These lands lie at the mouth of Sheep Canyon adjacent to Martinez Canyon. Both parcels lie on an alluvial fan, a plain created at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains from minerals, salts and runoff water carried over centuries, making this an important habitat for big horn sheep and other wildlife native to the region, McKernan said. According to experts, this alluvial fan is part of a network of fans that make up the entire Coachella Valley.

Cities Acting To Help
Coachella Valley - The city of Desert Hot Springs is poised to pass a local landmark resolution which will protect homeowners in their struggle to fight home foreclosures by banks and other mortgage services. In recent months, Occupy protests around the country have shed light on widespread mismanagement by mortgage companies that have failed homeowners by improperly documenting the seizure and re-sale of homes. The companies have foreclosed without the legal authority to do so. Here in the valley, the city of Coachella passed a resolution last month banning illegal foreclosure actions by lenders and banks. The vote was unanimous. Last September, the Los Angeles City Council passed a similar resolution also siding with the Occupy movement offering a measure of protection to homeowners.
It has been determined that some of the largest contributors to California’s, and the nation’s, foreclosure crisis are the flawed and often fraudulent practices by banks and the lending companies. To aid homeowners at the state level, California state Attorney General Kamala Harris has instituted into law the “Homeowners Bill of Rights,” a set of laws put into place to stop fraudulent practices by banks and assist homeowners to hold on to their homes. The AG is credited with winning a nearly $26 billion settlement against big banks due to foreclosure abuses. It is considered a coup against the abusive lending industry and for homeowners and families whose homes are on or near the chopping block. Agreeing to the settlement, the lenders and banks have for all intents and purposes admitted their wrongdoing in the unresolved
issues around bank property foreclosures including robo-signing (mass), proof of lender ownership, loan documents not written in the borrowers’ primary language and the loan process itself being riddled with fraud and deception. Often, original loan documents cannot be located, bringing into question true ownership of a given property. There are currently about 50 Desert Hot Springs homes now in foreclosure status. Other Coachella Valley cities are also now in the process of approving their own foreclosure resolutions to protect local homeowners. The city of Coachella is the first to institute this type of law in the Coachella Valley. Now, it is up to Desert Hot Springs to square the adoption of a new foreclosure resolution against its recent passage of a city ordinance fining homeowners for alleged property abandonment and who are now in
or going into a “short-sale” status. A shortsale is a sale of a property that is basically “underwater” where the property is worth less than money owed and the homeowner negotiates new sale terms with the bank or lender. A wide cross-section of community members here believe there should be an alternative middle ground offering homeowners greater relief against enduring double-jeopardy by having to pay fines to the city for vacated properties. Many feel, more appropriately, that banks and lenders should shoulder the burden of fines by the city, instead of the homeowner, should the banks fail to facilitate the short sale because they would prefer to collect the insurance dollars from insurance policies they hold against foreclosure proceedings.

I am looking forward to having some good, positive, informative articles about Desert Hot Springs and not the trash and garbage that [the newspaper] has been publishing for the past five or six years. Why can’t we spend more time praising [the accomplishments of Mayor Parks] rather than smut and personal attacks on our City Officials that [the newspaper] likes to publish.
Have you any idea where to find the proper data on the development of raising edible tropical fish in homes? Our desert climate makes for a most excellent environment for indoor fish farms. There are many foreclosed and empty homes that could be put to good use. Plus tropical fish can be delightfully fun as well as colorful pets. While some might object to neons, there are many species that look like ordinary edible fishes. Not so colorful as some might imagine, others sport leather-like outer scales not unlike dinosaurs. Only some tropical fish are for sushi. That should be obvious. Remember that some coral have fine cosmetic features and are, as well, nutritious and full of vitamins. who cares that an odd taste might be the lure of powerful attractions for those that are seriously hungry. Although for many the most valuable and most exhaulted tropical fish might best become a valuable fertilizer or cat food. Such as that may be. Whatcha gonna do?
There has been so much good happening here since our Mayor Parks stepped in to make a difference and has made substantial improvements such as the center of the City Facelift and the increase in new business. We need... Desert Hot Springs on the map as the center of the Spa Resort Community for Health and Wellness and not riddled with the trash that has been printed. This is nonsense about recalling the BEST Mayor we have ever had and the City Council members, Jan Pye and Scott Matas is appalling. The council members don’t have to be Best Friends, they just have to each do their duty, to serve the people of Desert Hot Springs and bring growth, beauty and peace to the city which they have been doing, so let’s give them credit and not criticism. Citrus for the Desert

For desert gardens, citrus trees offer a large variety of benefits including evergreen foliage, fragrant flowers in season and decorative, tasty fruit. Generally, the sweet varieties of fruit will form sugars best in moderate to high heat. Sour types do not need as much heat.
Standard of Dwarf
We are often asked “what is the difference between a dwarf citrus and a standard citrus?” The answer is that almost all citrus sold commercially have been budded or grafted on an under stock. An under stock is the root plant onto which a shoot has been grafted to produce a new plant. For dwarf and semi-dwarf citrus, there are two types of under stocks: trifoliate orange or ‘Flying Dragon’. The trifoliate orange under stocks produce trees 8-10 feet tall with some reaching 15-20 feet. ‘Flying Dragon’ produces even smaller trees of 5-7 feet all at 13 years. Grafted trees begin bearing fruit in just a few years, whereas seedling trees will take 10-15 years. Standard size citrus trees will mature at 20-30 feet tall and wide and are grown on a variety of under stocks.
Planting New Trees
Deep, well-drained soil is a must for citrus. In frost-free areas, they can be planted anytime. It is a good idea to plant in the spring after the danger of frost has passed in colder parts of the valley. Plant spacing of citrus trees, like other landscape trees, is dependent upon the ultimate growth of the tree. Typical spacing for a standard grapefruit is 20 feet and other citrus is 15 feet. Find the warmest location available – in full sun or with some afternoon shade - and avoid planting in lawns.
Irrigation
Irrigation for citrus is different when it is newly planted versus when it is mature. For newly planted trees, build a four foot diameter basin around each tree with sides about six inches in height. Thoroughly water the root ball and fill the basin and

soak the soil well at least twice a week from March to May. It is important to note here that all trees in your garden should be on a separate irrigation control valve so that watering can be monitored correctly. Soak citrus three times a week from June through September and water every 10-12 days during the winter months. After trees are established, maintain a dry area about 12 inches in diameter around the trunk. The water needs to move away from the trunk, therefore, soil should be slightly higher around the trunk. Continue to expand the basin so this it is slightly wider than the spread of the branches. Irrigation depth for citrus is best at three to four feet deep, and you should allow the soil to become mostly dry prior to watering again. In well-draining soils, a good rule is to water trees every two to three weeks from October through February, every 10 to 14 days March through May, and once a week June through September. If you have the heavier clay soils of the east valley, you will want to water less often.
Fertilization
The first application of a complete citrus fertilizer should be made in February to help set blossoms. One application per month should be made through September. At a minimum fertilize on these holidays: Easter, Memorial Day and Labor Day. If trees are in lawn areas, it may be helpful to add a bit more to compensate for the leeching that will occur with the over watering. Spread fertilizer evenly across the watering basin and water thoroughly after applying.
Pruning
Dead wood, crossed limbs and haphazard growth should be removed. Pull off suckers that grow below the bud union. Lowhanging branches around the perimeter of the tree should not be removed. They help the tree shade itself and prevents sunburn of the bark. If the trunk is exposed due to pruning, whitewash the trunk or wrap it for protection.
Pests and Disease Control
The most common citrus pests are aphids. Spray for them just prior to or at the first flush of new growth – late February to early March. A second application may be necessary two to three weeks later. Thrip insects generally arrive with hot weather and can be controlled with insecticides.

The disease attacks a tree’s vascular system, causing misshapen, bitter fruit before killing the tree. It is carried by the Asian citrus psyllid, a gnat-size flying pest that first appeared on domestic fruit trees in California in 2008. Citrus trees are sprayed by commercial growers before being imported into the valley. The Riverside Agricultural Commissioner requires certification that all citrus trees being sold here are certified that they have been sprayed. Domestic violence and rape are the two most common crimes against women and both are widely unreported, according to recent statistics released by the FBI and the Department of Justice, and those statistics do not always jive. The FBI reports that 37 percent of rapes and attempted rapes get reported while the Department of Justice estimates that number at 26 percent Additionally, statistics show that 73 percent of rapes are committed by someone known by the victim with 38 percent by friends or acquaintances, 28 percent by an intimate partner and 7 percent by relatives. Suggestions to keep from falling victim to this horrible crime, as well as other crimes: • Don’t get drunk. • Don’t go home with someone you do not know. • Don’t accept drinks from anyone you do not know or trust, male or female. • Don’t pick up strangers. • Don’t open your door for someone you do not know.
• Keep your windows and doors locked, especially at night and when you are gone. • When using social media sites don’t give information about where you live, work or go to school. • When walking to your car or front door at night, keep your keys ready in your hand and have your cell phone handy as well. • Stay away from alleys and secluded areas if you are alone. • Be careful who you give your n umber to. • Unless unlisted, it is easy for someone to find your home address and cell phones can be located using its GPS. • Take a self-defense class, specifically fighting off an attacker. Today, some women carry firearms, pepper spray, tasers or other weapons.
Although these are good ideas, it’s a bad idea to use them without the proper training because they can be turned against you or harm an innocent person. Women must feel confident and be capable in the proper use of weapons for them to be effective. The drug GHB, known as a “date rape” drug is colorless, odorless and tasteless that acts as an anesthetic rendering a victim physically incapacitated. Its effects last three to six hours and stays in the blood only four hours and in urine for 12 hours. It can also lower the heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. More importantly, if you become a victim of an attack, report it right away. Most unreported crimes are due to fear or embarrassment. Don’t give an attacker another victory.

Twentynine Palms, CA - The 29 Palms Art Gallery will be hosting its final reception of the season with the Summer Show at its historic adobe Sunday, June 3 from noon to 3:00 p.m. The member’s of the 29 Palms Artists’ Guild will have work featured in all three gallery spaces. Art works include both traditional and experimental watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings, pottery and kiln-fired ceramics in a variety of techniques. Other local artists will display mixed media, assemblages, photography, digital montage, wood block prints and a variety of printmaking genres, including sculptures. During the reception artists will be on hand to discuss their work and the guild will present the new board for the 2012-2013 season. A new gallery schedule and class listings will come out over the summer. The new schedule will include shows by Simi Dabah whose work is on permanent display on the gallery grounds, as well as Kathi Hilton, daughter of one of the prominent forces that founded the Artists’ Guild. The current schedule lists all Guild-related events for the public through the close of the season in August while the new board plans activities for the upcoming year. This is a great time to join the Artists’ Guild and become familiar with the gallery before the new season kicks into full swing during the active and fast approaching fall line-up for our areas busiest time of the year. The gift shop and gallery have a multitude of home decor items, artisan and Native American jewelry, outdoor art and outerwear. Indio, CA – This restaurant makes Mexican food right! I lived south of the border and spend a lot of my free time in Baja so I know good Mexican food when I taste it. This is the best Mexican food in the entire Palm Springs area, hands down. An exception to this could be the seafood dishes available at the new Las Palmas Mexican restaurant located on Palm Drive in Desert Hot Springs. More about them in another review. However, in saying that El Mexicali has some competition at the other end of the desert, I still highly recommend their Chili Gueritos appetizers ($13.95) which consists of six yellow peppers stuffed with succulent shrimp. It’s a little pricey but worth every savory bite. My husband ordered their mixed seafood Campechana (reg. $12.95/lg. $16.00). He’s picky about his Campechana and was hesitant because he’s so accustomed to the great seafood available from the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. However, after watching his first bite I knew we found a winner. He says that the El Mexicali version was every bit as good, and a whole lot cheaper at $16.00 when you consider the cost in gas for the four hour drive south of the border to San Felipe and an overnight room.

Yes, you’d have to drive that far south to find food this good, so if you’re afraid of traveling to Mexico but want the authentic flavors, then go to El Mexicali Cafe located at 82720 Indio Blvd., in Indio. You could miss it when you drive by the first time because it’s really a hole-in-the-wall located along the railroad tracks between Oasis and Civic Center. Their interior is small and seating is tight but the kitchen runs efficiently and smoothly. I’ve reviewed a lot of restaurants over the past 28 years and learned that some of the best food comes out of little places like this. Everything on their menu is good because Carmen and Monica Murguia have been making everything from scratch for the past 30 years. This place is a landmark in town. People drive out of their way to eat here, so if you’re ever in Indio or even close by, check out El Mexicali Cafe. You’ll tell all your out-of-town friends about it. By the way, their service is excellent and every employee had a smile on their face and talked with their customers like friends. Their food is so good and their reputation has grown so much that they opened a sister restaurant, El Mexicali II on Monroe Street, and I hear the food is just as good there too. I haven’t dined there yet but maybe I will on my next trip to Indio.

Desert Hot Springs – It’s 105 degrees outside and no food or water in sight for tens of thousands of feral cats roaming throughout the Coachella Valley. Local animal shelters and cat charities are struggling to get a handle on the explosive numbers but experts say it’s a crisis out of control.
“We probably have hundreds of thousands of feral alley cats wandering around Riverside county,” said Jackie Martin, program director of Feral Alley Cats and Friends charity located in Desert Hot Springs. “It’s a catastrophe and we need help” From the Salton Sea, Thermal and Mecca in the east valley to include the Indian reservations and all of Riverside county, this estimate may not be that far off. According to the Humane Society of the United States, there may be up to 70 million feral cats nationwide. The numbers are staggering but what’s worse are statistics showing that nearly 80 percent of all cats processed through the shelters are euthanized. Riverside county processed 10,672 cats but only adopted out 2,774 cats in the last fiscal year to date. “No one comes to the shelter to adopt cats because their neighbor or aunt has a box of kittens outside Wal-Mart or Petco for free,” said John Welsh, spokesman for the Riverside County Department of Animal Services. “Unfortunately people don’t think to go to the shelter to adopt a cat. We do a much better job with dogs than we do with cats.” Statistics show that of the 17,323 dogs processed through county shelters nearly 60 percent (or 10,123 dogs) were adopted out in the same fiscal year.
Maybe it’s because there are thousands of charities and animal advocacy groups for dog lovers but only a handful for cat lovers, Welsh said. “That’s why I chose cats instead of dogs,” Martin said. “They need our help.” She believes that animal control officers do a very good job patroling the streets for stray dogs but said she needs help in the hard hit areas to trap the feral cats. “Second Street has been stablized now,” she said adding that she and her volunteers have trapped more than 50 feral cats in this neighborhood which were adding to the explosive numbers. The Best Friends Animal Society of Utah estimates there are approximately 2,300 feral cats in DHS alone and that other cities suffer the same problem and worse. Martin admits that Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells, the most affluent cities in the valley, do not have the same problem due to upscale real estate development. But she says that Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta and Indio do have explosive numbers of feral cats because of the open land surrounding those communities. Martin has met with DHS Councilman Adam Sanchez, Indio Mayor Elaine Holmes and attended council meetings hoping to garner support for her cause.
“It doesn’t make sense to spend $300 or $400 to process and euthanize an animal when we could be spending $65 per to spay and neuter them,” she said. “We need more spay and neutering programs for feral cats,” Welsh said, applauding the work that Martin and groups like her perform. Martin said she works with Desert Dunes Animal Hospital in Indio; Animal Action League in Joshua Tree; Animal Samaritans in Thousand Palms and recommends Save A Pet in DHS. “A lot of the smaller orgnaizations are in dire need of financial help and the more clinic we have available and funded, the bigger dent we will make in the cat population.” Martin needs funding to trap another 250 feral cats within the city to spay and neuter them. This will cost the county less than it costs to euthanize them, she said. And indeed she’s right. According to Welsh, the average cost to process a stray dog or cat is $400. That includes spay and neutering, vaccinations, microchips and food and board. The cost to adopt a dog is $105, so the county loses $295 per dog. It’s worse with cats. The same $400 processing fee applies but cats adoption fees were $85 and have been reduced to $15 to promote more cat adoptions. “Every animal that doesn’t make it out (get adopted) loses the county more money. It’s not fair to call us a ‘kill shelter’ because we do everything we
can to get these animals adopted. People dismiss the fact that we’re saving lives too,” he said. However, the feral cat problem is even worse, he said. “The county cannot go onto private lands like mobile home parks or large estates to trap the wild cats.” Welsh applauds local animal advocates like Martin who trap, spay and neuter feral cats but he admits the task is daunting. Also there are various disputes on exactly what a feral cat is, he said. True feral cats are wild animals, living in the bushes around open lands and properties that hiss, scratch, snarl and bite when approached. Animal control officers must use nets or traps to catch them and when they are captured, they’re euthanized, he said. “We cannot adopt out a feral cat. It’s impossible. So unfortunately, if a feral cat is brought into the shelter system, it will be euthanized,” he said. New Delhi – A rare “shoot to kill” order against illegal poachers has been issued in a western state of India in a beefed-up effort to protect the endangered tigers, elephants and other sensitive wildlife threatened with extinction. Officials in Maharashtra, located near Mumbai, said last week they will no longer file criminal charges against forest rangers and guards who track down, injure or kill suspected poachers. The sudden announcement came after intense international pressure from animal protection groups like Save the Tiger Fund to stop the slaughter of the big cats which scientists estimate are slated for extinction. The tiger is considered endangered with its habitat shrinking more than 50 percent in the past 50 years and its numbers declining from 7,000 to 5,000 in the 1990s alone, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Why does it take a tragedy to get the system rolling? A fully-grown tiger was been found on May 18 hacked to pieces with its head and paws missing in the Tadoba tiger reserves. Forest rangers also found traps in the reserve where about 40 tigers live. Indian authorities issued the “shoot to kill” directive after two more tigers and three leopards were found killed in the past weeks. “Killing poachers won’t be considered a crime and no case will be registered if the forest staff catch them in the act and open fire,” said Patangrao Kadam, Forest Minister of Maharashtra. Forest rangers have been given better weapons to fight the battle against wildlife poachers and animal smugglers along with 100 jeeps to track the elusive hunters. India also promises to send more forest rangers into the field and will offer payments to informers offering tips that lead to arrests and convictions for poachers and animal smugglers. India has taken these drastic moves because of global scrutiny over its poor tiger conservation program. Estimates show that India is home to half of the

While tiger hunting was banned internationally in the 1970s it clearly remains a real threat with high black market prices for tiger body parts coveted by traditional Chinese medical practitioners and herbalists. Tiger numbers have declined steadily over the past 25 years and dozens of other animals are also targeted by hunters and animal smugglers. These “shoot to kill” efforts are also targeting poachers of one-horned rhinos and male elephants prized for their tusks, and to deter villagers who hunt leopards because they are afraid of attacks against their livestock. “There has been an onslaught going on in India,” said William Laurance, a conservation biologist at James Cook University in Australia. “It’s a serious threat to wildlife along with habitat encroachment and forest degradation. calendar LOCAL ARTISTS FOR FALL EXHIBIT La Quinta Museum Seeking You “Creativity In La Quinta Cove” To Feature Craftspeople, Artists and Hobbyists La Quinta, CA - The La Quinta Museum is calling all creative talent in La Quinta Cove. With the support of the La Quinta Cove Neighborhood Association, the Museum is hosting a fall exhibit titled “Creativity in La Quinta Cove”. Up to a dozen craftspeople, artists, and hobbyists will be selected to show their 2D or 3D works that will integrate well into a uniform exhibit representing the variety of creativity in the Cove. Selection will be based on creativity and design; keeping in mind the size of the exhibit space and other limitations. Requiem to a Cell Phone The cell phone has become an indispensable tool of modern life with instantaneous worldwide communications in your pocket or purse. Check in at the office, call home, send and receive texts, photos, emails, and now with advanced technology devices like the Ipod and Ipad, you have a virtual highpower computer at all times. There are applications that give anyone the ability to set up a camera surveillance system at home and monitor all the cameras from a cellular device. It really is truly amazing. Everything that just 20 or 30 years ago was Star Trek science fiction is now a reality. Except for the “transporter” which scientists they are still working on. When the cell is sounding off one call after another, beeping, vibrating, playing “Yakety-Yak, Don’t Talk Back,” doing everything but exploding we wonder how did we ever get along before cell phones existed? Tke a minute and think back to the 1970s and 1980s to remember what life was like without a cellphone. Back then we all had an answering service. We’d call in to the exchange and a live operator would deliver our messages over the phone. Actually, I liked the personal touch. There was a live
human being on the other end of the phone. And, I could give them instructions that if someone calls back, tell them, “I’ll be home at eight,” or to “meet me at the deli at six.” It was more than just a machine – it was a real human being. The next big innovation was the answering machine. It had a little red light that would blink when you got a message. The first thing you would check when you got home was to see if the light was blinking and then rewind the little cassette tape to see if it was a bill collector, your boss or a hot date called. The tapes gave way to digital recording but the principle was the same. The answering machines did not have the personal touch of the answering services but they were a much cheaper alternative, and with remote pickup they functioned just the same as voice mail does today. Life in the office evolved much the same way. Companies would have receptionists and phone operators who would either put calls through or take messages. Then came voice mail. “Mr. Pitt does not seem to be answering. Would you like to be connected to his voice mail?” Needless to say, it didn’t take long for the bean counters to figure out
they didn’t need the receptionists anymore. My big revelation in the mid 1980s was figuring out how to handle call volume in the office. If I was working on a big project or busy in meetings, it was very distracting and disruptive to be interrupted continuously with calls. So, after a while of welling frustration, I devised a plan. I would let all the calls in the morning pile up and then around 11:30 a.m. or so, pickup the messages and make callbacks. I would repeat the process in the late afternoon. That was the only way I could get anything done and it worked well. Calls were made when I was able to concentrate on the matter at hand and I was free from distraction the rest of the time to actually get something done. And then along came cell phones. Whatever notions of organization and control over my life I might have had went to hell. I was now captive to this little device that could go off at any minute, day or night, and did. Just the other day, I was in the middle of a three way conference call on a cell phone when in the middle of that call, I got another call on an urgent real estate deal that I had to take. During that call, I received a text that was so long it actually came through

in three parts. During the entire three-way conference call, I received three other calls that went to voice mail. With all those calls and messages, I some how managed to cutoff the original conference call, and spent the next 45-minutes retrieving voice mail messages, deciphering texts, answering calls from irate clients, and trying to figure out who else tried calling me and gave up. I have a recurring dream that I am going to take my three cell phones, drop them in the street and run them over with my car, savagely, violently and repeatedly, back and forth until they have been ground down and reduced to nothing but a pile of cracked and mangled parts. The next day I will mount the remaining fragments of my demon phones on a board and frame it, the final resting place for all the conspirators who have tormented me so ruthlessly over the years. The simple plaque, which will hang on my office wall, will read simply “Requiem to a cell phone. May I rest in peace.”

Palm Springs Safe Access – A Game Changer

“Get the Greed Out of Weed” Palm Springs - “Finally someone is doing it right,” said an anonymous patient as she was handed her prescription of medical marijuana in a white paper bag with Rx markings. “I’m a cancer survivor and I cannot afford the medicine but these people filled my prescription pro bono. I just love them,” she added with tears in her eyes. Robert Van Roo, 26, of San Francisco along with co-founders Cody Henderson, 34, and Alice Jensen, 47, bring their magic formula for a medical marijuana dispensary to the desert as Palm Springs Safe Access. These three entrepreneurs have changed the game and offer what appears to be the first, complete, altruistic co-operative dispensary in the Coachella Valley. “We are operating as a not-for-profit, “ Van Roo said. “This is for the people and by the people.” He intends to give all profits after operational costs and salaries back to the community by donating to local charities, sponsoring initiatives and supplying needy patients. “I like what Kim Quiggle, a proponent of Proposition 215 says: ‘Get the greed out of weed.’” Proposition 215 is the 1996 Compassionate Use Act legalizing medical marijuana in California.
“It’s all about compassion,” he said. “It’s all about community. The medicine affords the opportunity to give back and we are doing it in a new way.” Indeed they are. PS Safe Access aspires to demonstrate just how dispensaries should be run, and they’re doing it in a very classy way. Van Roo and his partners opened the massive 10,000 square foot complex on March 23 and have big plans for the future. Those plans include an upscale interior renovation of the entire building located at 505 East Industrial Place. The previous tenant, CannaHelp, operated there as one of only three dispensaries in the city granted a business license. Now, another fourth business license is up for grabs and the city council is up in the air about which dispensary will win it. Van Roo has invited Mayor Steve Pougnet and the City Council to tour the new facility. They are expected to issue that fourth business license at an undetermined date in the future.Van Roo hopes the city gives PS Safe Access fair consideration but worries that other senior applicants may have priority. While they wait for the city’s decision, renovations are underway upstairs in the 900 sq. ft. yoga studio. There is a section with several smaller rooms for Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Massage
and Reiki treatments. Van Roo will offer salaried positions for each alternative health care provider, as well as, two paid yoga instructors. He expects to offer free yoga classes every two hours by the end of June. He’s looking for volunteers to help with the yoga studio, art gallery and other duties at the co-op. Van Roo admits to a deeply personal motivation behind his co-operative saga. His commitment comes from when he worked at a state run Level 14 group home for mentally-ill children. He learned compassion first-hand from the traumas and tragedies of those patients and from an experience that changed his life forever. Van Roo suffered a severe neck and back injury trying to restrain a patient attacking a female therapist. Consequently, he became addicted to prescription drugs starting first with Vicodin and ending with Valium. His life had become unmanageable until he discovered natural, organic, alternative pain remedies, including marijuana, which enabled him to withdrawal and stop using prescription drugs. “I couldn’t work on pharmaceuticals. I didn’t have a life. The medicine allows me to have a life,” he said. Van Roo expects to carry 50 strains of medical cannabis each tested by SC Laboratories for chemicals, molds and pesticides before being offered to the
public. “We have a link on Weed Maps that shows all our strains and their test results. It’s important to know your medicine and make sure it’s not harming you,” he said. The lobby interior architectural design consists of bright white, glossy floors and walls lined with iridescent blue LED lighting in geometric patterns mimicking the desert mountains Two elegant 65-gallon salt water aquariums create a serene and flowing atmosphere in the lobby. As Ernest Hemingway would say: “It’s a clean, well-lighted place.” Adjacent to the lobby, a newlyrenovated 700-sq. ft. patient art gallery and community room is accented with high-end track lighting, custom woodwork and wood floors, and will be used by local non-profits for intimate gatherings, meetings, classes or workshops. Van Roo envisions the room being used for foster care classes, cancer survivor meetings, as well as, HIV-AIDS, leukemia and other health care support groups. “The sky’s the limit.
