Flamingo Hotel Fire Investigated City Hopes to Recoup Investment Desert Hot Springs, CA – Fire investigators are searching the rubble this week to find out what caused the fire at the Flamingo Hotel Resort and Spa last Monday morning. Riverside County firefighters responded to a fully engulfed fire at 67-221 Pierson Blvd., at 7:15 a.m., bringing the blaze under control by 8:30 a.m. One firefighter was taken to an area hospital after suffering minor injuries. Approximately one-third of the building was destroyed by flames, said Rick Daniels, city manager.

into foreclosure in 2009 and reverted back to the bank. The bank sold the property to Stephen Whang, president of LWL Investment Group of Los Angeles. The city entered into new negotiations with Whang in 2010. Efforts to reach LWL Investment Group were unsuccessful through Tuesday. Whang submitted ideas, concepts and plans to finish the renovations, and the city was anxious and hopeful that the hotel would open in the near future, Daniels said.

“The city, like all other cities in the Coachella Valley with hotels, advances redevelopment money” to business who apply, Daniels said in a telephone interview.

However, since the renovations and construction halted in 2009, the property has become a nuisance. A multi-agency code enforcement effort started in 2010 to secure the property and clean it up, he said.

The previous owner of the Flamingo hotel, Brian Bescoby, applied for redevelopment money for financial assistance to renovate the property. The city council reviewed that application two to three times, approved it in June 2008 with some changes and advanced $250,000 to renovated the property, he said.

“People were using it, vagrants, transients, kids having parties, and it became a danger for children in the neighborhood,” he said. “We beefed-up code enforcements and cracked down on LWL with citations, fines and investigations of the property. Whang responded, cleaned up and secured the property best he could,” he said.

“Once opened, the hotel would get a 50 percent credit on TOT taxes. Bescoby started renovations, did some significant construction and improvements worth well over the $250,000 investment, Daniels said. However, Bescoby's financial well dried up, he quit and walked away, like many other property owners did during the real estate implosion that started in 2008. The Flamingo property, like many others, fell

The city financial tie to the property lies in a claim against the property, Daniels said. “In the past 24 hours, the new owner is sending contractors to evaluate the damage. The insurance company is sending adjustors and “It wasn't looking bad and we (the city) inspectors to make a decision on whether were anxious and excited when the new the property is a total loss,” he said. owner submitted real plans to reopen and After the county fire inspectors finish their operate the hotel. investigation, the city will order the burned “We were looking forward to those TOT portion of the hotel removed, he said. taxes and sales taxes from food and beverage, and the sale of bathrobes,” he The $250,000 the city gave Bescoby back in said. “It's a shame because it's a wonderful 2008 is expected to be recouped, Daniels said. setting with beautiful views.” - by Jackie Devereaux

Code Enforcement Tackles Hyundae Hotel Desert Hot Springs, CA – According to a city manager report, city code enforcement officers took action last week against the Hyundae Hotel for operating without any city permits or licenses. Specifically the business has been lacking a business license, building permit, use permit and sign permit since re-opening last year. The 93-room hotel fell upon hard times since 2008. What began as the Ponce de Leon Hotel was long known as the Mineral Springs Hotel, distinctive for the architectural rock adorning the entrance and the interior of the lobby. The hotel sold in 2006 and was renamed La Toscana until it was sold to Mr. “T” from Virginia who renamed it Hotel Shilla in honor

features of one of the finest hotels in Seoul, Korea. The once granite rocks were repainted white, giving the hotel the appearance of a snow covered oasis. The owner did not pay the city for collected hotel room tax, known as the Transient Occupancy Tax. The the city pressured the owner to pay up. A few months later the hotel went into foreclosure since Mr. T had not made any payments to the bank since purchasing the property.

Thrive…health by design From Barely Surviving to Thriving Desert Hot Springs, CA – If you're sick and tired of being sick and tired than you need to see Barbara Kinsey, a clinical nutritionist and detoxification specialist at Thrive...health by design who uses a revolutionary technique of Quantum Reflex Analysis to help people suffering from a variety of ailments. Kinsey has clients drive from San Diego and Los Angeles to receive her health and wellness treatments which cost between $125 for a 90-minute detox and cleanse to a full six-hour cleanse for $525. Her Optimun Wellness Xtreme Miracle Cleanse includes an advanced immune treatment, deep cell detoxification, laser light therapy, hot mineral soaks, infrared thermal and sauna therapies, power drinks, pure body cocktails and nutritional supplements.

Barely Surviving The reason she's able to help so many critically unwell people is because Kinsey knows what feeling sick and tired is all about. Her personal journey to good health and wellness started when she was 27 years old suffering with a body that was falling completely apart. “I grew up eating lots of fried foods, meats, drinking a lot of sodas and eating a lot of refined sugars. At 27, both my knees were painfully swollen and I could not work. I had mitral valve prolapse arrhythmia, bronchial and cardiac problems. I had Bell's Palsy where half my face could not smile,” Kinsey confessed. “I looked like an old, sick woman. I went to doctors but nothing they did worked; some even made me worse. “I prayed to God to show me what to do, and He did.” She found enlightenment in a garbage dumpster where she rescued two books – one on Detoxification and the other on Nutrition. She read them both like a bible and started changing her diet. “I had no idea about nutrition – I was

ignorant. I didn't know where to go or what to do and I only had $20 left to feed two people and one dog for one week. Doctors could not help me and I became desperate,” she said. Kinsey took that $20 and made it stretch. She ate less meat and less protein. She eliminated fried foods, sodas, coffee and her favorite chocolate from her diet. “I also had fibroid cystic breasts and like everyone, I didn't want to change until I had to.” Kinsey believes everyone has a “body reserve” much like a bank account. Each person has a different amount of this or that in their bodies, and we're all wearing our reserves out. “We think we're okay until out of the blue their account is in bankruptcy,” she said. Others, even in the same family, can have full accounts or reserves. “Poor man or rich man we all have bodies that respond to our diet and lifestyles. Some people think sugar doesn't hurt me. You're only living on reserves and it will wear out,” she warns. “For me it was sooner. At the age of 27, I hit rock bottom.”

To Thriving

That was 22 years ago and now at 49 Kinsey does not look even close to her age. She appears to be a much younger woman who is trim, fit, energetic and more importantly, free from all her past ailments. “No more swollen knees or ankles and no more heart and lung problems.” Her work with nutrition and detoxification has not gone unnoticed. She recently was recruited by The Holman Group to conduct health and wellness seminars for employees at

instead she advices people to eat meat once a week or once every two weeks and to eat fish four to five times a week. “Eat wild caught fish from the deep sea, New Zealand or Alaska that are free of hormones. Do not eat farm-raised fish,” she advised.“Eat lots of green leafy vegetables, just like mom use to say. “I focus on the body's natural self-healing ability. I have spent many years in the field of health and wellness, concentrating on nutrition and detoxification. My main objective is guiding, educating and helping individuals achieve a higher level of health by using proven successful, natural healing modalities and therapies. “I have had great success with clients including some amazing immediate results even for those suffering with kidney, liver and gall bladder failure,” she said. Tim Bradley WBO Win

Local Champion Connected to Local Cities Cathedral City, CA — A local hometown boxing favorite, Timothy Bradley, stunned the world on Saturday, June 9 when he won the world welterweight crown against the reigning champion Manny Pacquiao in a highly controversial decision in Las Vegas. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) is currently investigating that decision and has assigned five judges to rescore the fight, according to their website www. wboboxing.com. WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel said he is not considering stripping the WBO belt from Bradley and will not order a mandatory rematch because Pacquiao's contract already stipulates he will get a rematch if he lost the fight. Bradley won the fight in 12 rounds by a judge's split decision with two injured ankles propelled only by “pure guts,” said his trainer Joel Diaz from their training facility at the Boys and Girls Club of Indio. Bradley returned to his Cathedral City home Sunday night as a conquering hero escorted by his family and supporters in a wheelchair with both ankles bandaged. Bradley was raised in Palm Springs but graduated from Cathedral City High

School. He owns an automotive repair business in Desert Hot Springs, B & M Tire & Auto on Palm Drive with his wife, Monica who has supported his career throughout their marriage. His mother, Kathy, lives in Cathedral City and has been a pillar of strength and support since his early childhood. Bradley's first bout was in 2004, and today he holds a 29-0 record. Prior to this win, he holds the WBE Youth World Welterweight Champion title and holds the Light World Welter Weight Crown. In addition to Bradley's training at the Indio Boys and Girls Club, he runs the three-mile trek up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway each day as part of his training. What most people don't know is that Bradley follows a strict vegan diet. He believes that a plant-based, compassionate diet is responsible for his success in the sport of boxing. He started following a vegan diet plan in 2008 after an adviser convinced him it would give him more endurance and power. After seeing the results were so successful for him, he integrated the vegan diet into his everyday dietary plan. Several other extreme athletes adhere

Bradley admitted to the press there was a time when he felt like throwing in the towel but his trainer Diaz encouraged him to go for the win. - by Jackie Devereaux

to a vegan, plant-based diet, including baseball star Prince Fielder, MMA athlete Mac Danzig, cyclist Adam Myerson, bodybuilder Robert Cheeke, triathlete Brendan Brazier, ultra endurance runner Scott Jurek and ultra endurance athlete Loaded Roll. The 1980s-spawned band led by blue-eyed soul singer Mick Hucknall may have called it quits a few years ago, but the British outfit’s deeply affecting approach lives on thanks to almost a dozen studio albums, and thankfully, a recently-issued DVD “Live at Montreux 2003” that was filmed at the Montreux Jazz Festival where the band was touring in support of their then-new release “Home.” What’s more, the DVD also features bonus footage and performances captured at the group’s most recent appearance at the festival in 2010.

Living Longer

Secrets of Living Longer Will This System Guarantee Your Success? I just finished reading an impressive book, Focal Point, which boldly states on its cover that it presents “a proven system to simplify your life, double your productivity and achieve all your goals.” Furthermore the book, which is authored by acclaimed business guru Brian Tracy, guarantees that the recommended procedures, if followed, will also achieve better, faster and easier results, including increasing your income, than can now be imagined. This is true, the book states, regardless of the project – whether it be opening a new business, working for an employer, writing a book, having successful relationships, creating inner peace and spiritual development, etc. – and however you choose to define success. The basic principle of Tracy’s book is very compelling. Successful people have good habits that are life enhancing. Unsuccessful, unhappy people have habits that hurt them and hold them back. Therefore, learn and practice the habits of successful people with similar goals. Focus on the most important thing you can do at any given moment (the “focal point”) and success will flow to you as certainly as a river flows to the ocean. Tracy states that his book answers some of the key questions you probably ask yourself regularly. How can I get control of my time and my life? How can I achieve maximum success in my career and still achieve balance in my relationships and my personal life. How can I have it all and still be happy and fulfilled? Tracy does not deal in generalities. In section after section, based on his 25 years of research and practical experience, he

specifies exactly what must be done to achieve success in a number of different areas. That is why I am adopting him as my own mentor for completing several projects that I have been procrastinating about for a number of years. These projects include writing a book about my experiences in the 1960’s while publishing the Los Angeles Free Press and re-uniting the activist community of readers, supporters and staff that developed in those historic years. Therefore, what I plan to do in this and following articles is explain in detail the steps that Tracy recommends, relate what I am doing on my own projects and state the results for your benefit and mine. In a few months I hopefully will have a completed book and a successful web site energizing the activist 1960s community on the 2012 internet. Hopefully, some readers (including you?) will also have been sufficiently inspired by Tracy’s suggestions and my efforts to have started and completed your own projects. We will all learn and gain by this practical experiment! Tracy starts by pointing out that there are really only four different things a person can do to improve the quality of life and work. 1: You can do more of certain things. You can do more of the things that are of greater value to you and bring you greater rewards and satisfactions. 2: You can do less of certain things. You can deliberately decide to reduce or discontinue activities or behaviors that are not as helpful or can actually be hurtful to you in accomplishing the things you want. 3: You can start to do things you are not doing at all today. You can make new

choices, learn new skills, begin new projects or activities, or change the entire focus of your world or personal life. 4: You can stop doing certain things altogether. You can stand back and evaluate your life with new eyes. You can then decide to discontinue activities and behaviors that are no longer consistent with what you want and where you want to go.” Therefore, next week you (and I) will begin accepting complete responsibility for our lives. We will begin by viewing ourselves as self-employed, no matter who signs the paycheck at present. We will begin by examining the 80/20 Rule which says that 20 percent of our tasks contribute 80 percent or more of all the things we do. Ask yourself: What are the top 20 percent of your activities that account, or can account, for 80 percent or more of the value of your work? Then, identify the activities in the bottom 80 percent, the lower-value time-consuming tasks that contribute very little to your results. Resolve to downsize, delegate and eliminate as many of them as possible, as quickly as

k.d. lang & the Siss Boom Bang at McCallum Fitz’s Jazz Cafe Vibrates

Palm Desert, CA – Fitz’s Jazz Café series at McCallum Theatre presents a summer performance with k.d. lang on Tuesday, June 26 at 8:00 p.m. The Canadian native launched her career with a blend of country-rock and playfully punklike attitude. After independently releasing “A Truly Western Experience” on a Canadian label in 1984, which generated serious majorlabel interest in the States, k.d. joined Sire/ Warner Bros for her 1987 U.S. debut, “Angel With A Lariat.” In 1988’s follow-up “Shadowland” brought k.d. to the heart of Nashville for a country-politanthemed collaboration. Though the Nashville establishment may have remained skeptical about k.d., “Shadowland” reached #8 on the Billboard Country album chart. Her 1989 Grammy Award-winning “Absolute Torch” and “Twang” combined her love of country with increasingly sophisticated, emotive torch singing typified by “Pullin’ Back the Reins.” With the 1992 Platinum-selling “Ingenue,” she had fashioned a sound and an elegant and impassioned adult contemporary approach that yielded her biggest hit, “Constant Craving,” and another Grammy.

On subsequent releases, k.d. continued to fine-tune and expand the parameters of her songwriting and her repertoire. “All You Can Eat” (1995) was the most experimental, as challenging as it was fun. “Drag” (1997) underscored her gifts as an interpreter, utilizing material by composers ranging from Steve Miller and Air Supply to Jane Siberry and Andre and Dory Previn. “Invincible Summer” (2000) was perhaps her most sultry, a collection featuring bossa nova inflections and dreamy electronics. With “Hymns of the 49th Parallel,” k.d. presented her most compelling set of material by other songwriters — all of them, in this case, fellow Canadians — as well as a gorgeous version of her own “Simple.” k.d.’s interpretation of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is understatedly stunning, and with good reason; it has become, along with her breathtaking cover of Roy Orbison’s “Crying,” a concert showstopper. Her 2008 release, the beautiful and self-assured “Watershed,” was, as the title suggests, a pivotal moment for k.d., her first effort acting as producer along with singer and songwriter. She called the album “a culmination of everything I’ve done — there’s a little bit of

jazz, a little country, a little of the Ingenue sound, a little Brazilian touch.” Along the way k.d. garnered two more Grammys, eight Juno Awards in Canada, and Canada’s highest civilian award, The Order of Canada. In April of 2011, k.d. released her latest CD, “Sing It Loud.” k.d.’s work has been regularly featured in movies. The lang/Orbison duet version of “Crying” was originally recorded for a teen comedy called “Hiding Out.” She collaborated with composer Bob Telson on “Barefoot,” the haunting theme of the German cult classic drama, “Salmonberries,” which also happened to star lang as a mysterious young Alaskan orphan, and she wrote and performed the incantatory “Calling All Angels,” from the 1991 soundtrack to “Until the End of the World.” k.d. has collaborated, in the studio and on stage, with many other pop and country performers, including Bonnie Raitt and Elton John.

But her best-known collaboration has been with Tony Bennett, with whom she recorded the 2002 “Wonderful World” duets album and continues to tour regularly, often in symphonic settings. Bennett may be her biggest fan and he declared to the press what so many fans have come to believe over the last two and a half decades: “She’s the best singer of her generation.” This performance by k.d. lang as part of the Fitz’s Jazz Café series at the McCallum Theatre, is sponsored by Desert Lexus, KPSP-TV2 and KJJZ 102.3-FM. k.d.lang will appear at McCallum Theatre on Tuesday, June 26 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are priced at $99, $79, $69 and $59 and are available by calling the McCallum Theatre Box Office at (760) 340-2787 or online at www. mccallumtheatre.com. McCallum Theatre, located at 73000 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert CA 92260, accepts payment by cash, personal check, VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

The Mosh Pitt

The Rise and Fall of Service When was the last time you pulled into a gas station and said, “Fill er up,” and the attendant asked if you wanted the oil and water checked? The idea of any sort of personalized service that would entice the customer to return to that particular gas station is all gone. No one cares if you come back or not. You can check your own oil and water or just let the car burn up, the choice is yours. And if you want air you have to put quarters into a machine, although, by law air is free. The so-called self-service gas station, which began as a method of cutting costs since no attendant would be needed has unfortunately spread to self service in just about every other department of life from supermarkets to department stores. The worst offenders are the big cut-rate stores where the average budget-minded person seems to wind up. To begin with, the stores are too big. You can never find anything. And there’s never anyone to ask. I was in one those not long ago and it was a nightmare. The aisles go on and on and never seem to end, but that special something you’re looking for is somehow just out of reach. “Excuse me, but do you work here?” I ask

plaintively of an ordinary looking fellow who looks like he works in a store. “No, I don’t,” he retorts and the search continues. The supermarket is the next offender in the rise to cut costs. How many times have you gone into a market with ten checkout stands, and only one clerk actually checking anybody out. So you stand in a long line with your lone tube of toothpaste while someone with a weeks shopping and a room temperature IQ fumbles around with their debit card passing it endlessly through the machine. “Oh gee, I don’t know what’s wrong. It worked yesterday.” By the time you reach the register with your $20 bill, the clerk announces “Oh, I’m going to have to get change. Most people pay with cards.” I’m not most people. Of course there are exceptions to this tyranny of low cost, cut rate and do-it-yourself, fix-it-yourself type places. One oasis in the desert (no pun intended) is Trader Joes. Trader Joe’s started back in the 1970s with a lone store in Pasadena. Trader Joe’s is named after its founder Joe Columbe. The chain began in 1958 as a Los Angeles chain of “Pronto Market” stores. Soon the idea that the customer is always right, combined with an interesting selection of reasonably priced products caught the attention of Californians

and soon Trader Joe’s was a household name. Can’t find something at Trader Joe’s? There’s a stock clerk around every corner. I counted five the last time I visited. Wander into any Trader Joe’s and you will find a free coffee stand set up where you are welcome to sample coffee as you shop. And they usually have a free sample of one of their products. One week it was a spinach dip, and another it was a quiche. There are always at least three, sometimes four checkout clerks open at Trader Joes. And they use REAL paper bags, not the plastic one, if you are concerned with protecting the environment. If you choose to dine out, restaurants are another area where service has taken a backseat to profit optimization. Now many restaurants have an elaborate computerized system at the check-in desk. The guest traffic control system. When they announce “The Jones party, your table is ready,” it makes you feel like Flight 29 on approach to La Guardia. Fasten your seat belts, the ride is about to begin. Service used to be good in medium-priced restaurants and even at the lunch counter at Woolworth’s. No more. They bring you

a menu, and you decide to order the chicken hash. “I’m sorry, sir but we just ran out of the chicken hash.” “I see,” murmuring in disappointment. “What’s that on the front of your shirt? That looks good.” Embarrassed, the waiter looks at his shirt and says “I’m sorry, sir, but I don’t know.” “Well bring me an order of roast beef and some mashed potatoes. And some new peas too, if you think you can remember all that.” After a half hour your order still hasn’t arrived. You summon the waiter. “What’s going on with my roast beef?” I could slap a cow to death and get a steak out of it in less time than it’s taken to get my dinner.” After you have downed the last bit of beef on your plate and mopped up the gravy with a tattered well worn roll, and quaffed the last drop of wine from your goblet, you look around for someone to bring you the bill. This too takes forever, and you are expected to leave a tip. I long for a return to the day when the customer was always right and you got service with a smile. In fact, I long for any service -- at all. - by RG Pitt

PS Shortfest Announces Film Forums and Panels Gus Van Sant to be Honored Palm Springs, CA – The Palm Springs International ShortFest is best known for its award-winning film shorts but each year the festival welcomes a long guest list of filmmakers and industry attendees. Prominent industry figures will participate in three days of ShortFest Forums, panels and master classes to discuss emerging trends in the film community. This year’s festival has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to be applied to the 2012 ShortFest Forums. The Festival will take place June 19-25.

This year, well-known American director and screenwriter Gus Van Sant will be presented with the ShortFest Spirit of Short Film Award, as part of a special Directing Master Class presentation celebrating his work in film. On Saturday, June 23 at 2:30 p.m., a selection of his shorts will be screened and a moderated discussion will take place with Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. Van Sant is a two-time Best Director Oscar nominee for “Good Will Hunting” and “Milk,” both of which were also nominated for Best Picture. In addition to his impressive body of feature film work, he has also directed several short films. He was been previously honored at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2009, when he received the Sonny Bono Visionary Award. “I’m thrilled that Gus Van Sant will be joining us to share his expertise and unique perspective with filmmakers and audiences attending the Festival,” said ShortFest Programming and Executive Director Darryl Macdonald.

“Over the course of his distinguished career, Gus has been a groundbreaking force in his field, and he’s an incredibly gifted artist working at the peak of his craft. “The support we’ve received from the Academy has enabled us to greatly expand our programming devoted to filmmakers through the ShortFest Forums, an essential element in the educational mission of the festival, and, together with the Short Film Market and public exhibition of shorts, an integral part of what makes ShortFest a vital launchpad for new film making talent.” Also attending the festival this year is

Academy Award® winning cinematographer Robert Elswit “There Will Be Blood,” “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” “Good Night and Good Luck,” “Salt,” “Michael Clayton,” “Syriana.” He will be there to conduct a Master Class on Cinematography on Saturday, June 23 at 12:30 p.m. Robert’s most recent film is “The Bourne Legacy” starring Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton and set for release in August. “We are astonished at the level and number of industry attending ShortFest Forums this year throughout our Industry Weekend,” said Kathleen McInnis, ShortFest Film Curator and Director of Industry Programming. “This just reinforces what we already suspected—that the film industry is excited to have ShortFest as a scouting arena for new talent as well as being committed to giving back to the new generation of filmmakers that they meet here. The Academy’s support has meant we can increase our abilities to put the industry and ShortFest filmmakers together in intimate,

meaningful ways. In turn, we have more than ever before to offer our attending filmmakers, especially for those who are planning their first features, are thinking of breaking into the North American market, or who want to use the festival circuit to their best advantage. Along with Gus Van Sant, having Robert Elswit conduct a Cinematography Master Class will mean two Oscar© winners will be working with our filmmakers.” ShortFest Forums include: Friday, June 22 at 11:00 a.m. Meet the Programmers: Programmers from all arenas—festivals, broadcast, theatrical and online—will be on hand to talk about what it takes to be seen, and picked up, by them for exhibition in their particular venues. Sunshine Cafe Hole-in-the-wall Attracts Celebrities and Locals

Cathedral City, CA – If you’re looking for a good country-style restaurant that sometimes draws celebrities, then the Sunshine Cafe is the place for you. They’re known for their signature Banana Nut Pancakes and Cinnamon Swirl French Toast for breakfast. Or if you’re hankering for lunch, they serve a not-to-be-missed Sunshine Salad or Jumbo Taco Salad, and a hearty Burger or Philly Cheese Steak for my meat-eating friends. I’m pretty picky about my Philly Cheese steaks, coming from Philly myself, so this is high praise for a hole-in-the wall diner in Cat City. I found this off-beat place a few years ago through a friend and then I took a friend who took their friends there. That’s how it goes. You generally only find out about it through word of mouth. I drove right past it for about six months before I got clued in. To clue you in - it’s located across the street from the IMAX theaters on Cathedral Canyon just off Hwy. 111. And yes, the building is old and parking is a challenge but believe me, after you eat one the their delicious Omelets or a Mushroom Burger with Fries, you’ll enjoy the walk to your car to

between the two dining rooms waving to their favorite cooks. People wait for certain tables to order food from their favorite server just the way they like it. Today, after 11 years and many upgrades including a fresh coat of paint and a new fresh image, the staff at the Sunshine Cafe has been committed to friendly efficient service and the best value anywhere for under $10.00 a plate. Our waitress, Fawn, told us she has been working here for more than 13 years, as she handed us a 20 percent off discount card for our next visit. What could be better than that? They upped the ante by making the coupon redeemable for dine in, pick up and delivery! That’s an offer I’ve never seen on any other discount cards. Most of the waitresses know most of the regular customers by name offering them fast service and pouring plenty of coffee throughout their meal. While some may say this off-beat eatery is a burn off the calories. little too low-brow for them, I like it, and will Dress casually because this is certainly a nocertainly drive back to dine here again. frills, country-style cafe that is sometimes frequented by celebrities, politicians and The Sunshine Cafe warns you on the menu that their Banana Nut Pancakes are habit-forming. international visitors. Diana Durr

The Human Form Peeled Back Joshua Tree, CA – Diana Durr is a rare gemstone found amidst our sandy desert. When you look at Durr’s collection of artwork, the first thing that pops out is her use of vibrant colors. The second thing is her passion for the human form. Durr’s art unveils that human form much like peeling back layers to reveal what’s hidden inside. “It all started in college at Cal State Northridge,” she said. “I drew a cabbage with leaves falling off. During weekly painting sessions with my ‘Life Drawing Group,’ we hired a model, she’d make several poses and we’d draw her.” Over the past few decades, Durr applied, expanded and evolved those early art lessons with cabbages and the human form into her current “peeling away” style. Her paintings in her “Layers” collection each express different movements of the human form. “There’s so much more to the human form than what you see on the outside,” she said. “Peeling away the layers and revealing what’s inside is a great mystery. That’s why most of my paintings are named by numbers – they’re hard to describe in words.” Durr was greatly influenced by the work of the Surrealist, Modernist, Abstract and Representational art movements. “I’d get my ideas when I’m not thinking about art,” she said. “Over the years, I trained myself to catch that idea like trying to remember something on the tip of your tongue. She believes that both men and women can relate to the androgynous human form. “There’s a lot to express through the human form with different color schemes, unusual combinations that complement each other like light contrasts,” she said.

Art Around Town

She works primarily in oils mostly on hardboards with some paintings on canvas. From her Joshua Tree home/studio she creates emotionally powerful abstract oil paintings with a technique that involves using very small brushes to achieve high detail and a smooth blending of colors. The use of this technique allows her to express her ideas about the world. “My techniques has been in development over a lifetime,” she said, “with images from nature. “ Her paintings in the “Tree” collection explores organic forms to reveal connections with the world around us. “Imagery, color and form elicit an emotional response and encourage the viewer to discover what lies deep within the layers of their own lives, minds, and hearts,” she said. Durr moved to Joshua Tree with her husband, John, and daughter, a graduate of Yucca Valley High School, after retiring from a career in secondary education in 2004. “My husband and I moved here from Manhattan Beach for the rock climbing and then discovered it was a great art community too.” To see more of Durr’s artwork, go to www.didurr.com. “SEUSSICAL” THE MUSICAL “SUESSICAL” is described as a “a fantastical, musical extravaganza!” All of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters from 15 of his books are brought to life: Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie, and a imaginative little boy--Jojo. astrologicalaffects By Guru Ren Yogamaya, M.A. E-RYT 500 June 20 – Sun Into Cancer: Most Affected are Cancer and all Water Signs. The month is in the sign of Cancer. For Cancer: All Moon themes such as sensitivity, moods, nurturing and stability will rule supreme until July 22. A more heightened awareness of emotions, sensitivity to heat, fondness of food and harmony. The best side of Cancer is seen in their caring demeanor, their display of compassion, dealing with family issues easily, their cozy home and their culinary talents. The key is to know when to let go, to balance your moods, to silence overt emotions at the appropriate time and to leave justice in the hands of the Universe. For All Signs: The Moon shines brighter this month. The divine feminine and the divine masculine energies in all people, nature, in Life, is found in the 2nd Chakra, the sacrum, abdomen, that also represents the element of Water, the sign of Cancer. We may feel more for others and for ourselves, cautious and protective. By using your awareness from divine guidance, the virtues of patience and observances will assist to bring solution to problems and healing. When in doubt stay positive, don’t whine or complain as it will only wear you out, and bring wrinkles and exhaustion. Celebrate this month by having more consideration of family members at home, enjoy water; the pool, the spa, the beach or trying Aquatic Pool Yoga. Best Sacred Geometry: Icosahedron (Water) Best Yantra: The colors Orange or Coral. Jupiter In Gemini! Most Affected are Gemini and All Air Signs. This transit began on June 11 and continues for a full year, until June 25, 2013. For Gemini: The Big News: Jupiter, the planet of luck, opportunity and expansion enters your sign and will bring you a plethora of greatness into your Life for a full year. Your outlook in life will become more positive, optimistic and there will be a light skip in your step. Higher learning may appeal to you as your spiritual beliefs may expand. Careful not to take on more than you can handle. People born under the sign of Sagittarius (or have Sag rising) will figure more prominently. For All Signs: Trying to maintain a single point of view may become obsolete during this year. We may experience intellectual flexibility as well as more curiosity. The inexperienced may try to influence the gullible; teachers who have little knowledge or who look great on the surface may be viewed as a passing trend. The contribution that Jupiter in Gemini will provide is our immediate recognition of the genuine and the change of our belief system that will help us to open our minds to an expansive wave of truths. Best Mantra: HAM, HUM. Best Colors: Light Blue, Turquoise and Indigo Blue. Week of June 21 - June 27: June 25 – Saturn Turns Direct Most affected are Capricorn and Libra: Saturn’s retrograde transit began on February 7, 2012. For Capricorn: Business matters that have

been delayed can now move forward with their foundations strengthened. Depending on where you put your focus, you may change your job or career. For Libra: Structure and more realistic goals re-enter your Life. Although Neptune the planet of illusion is still in retro, Saturn’s direct motion will help you to see the trees through the fog; see people and circumstances as they are and not as you judge them to be. For All Signs: The planet’s true characteristics return with inspiration and the return of more grounding, concrete energies, just in time to get us back on track with work and important projects. The fall-out from Saturn’s retrograde is to review what you’ve learned from the lessons past. Not repeating the same mistakes is the higher path of Raja Yoga (the “royal” path to mental mastery). June 25 – Mercury Into Leo Most Affected are Leo, Gemini and Virgo. This transit will continue until August 31. For Leo: With the planet of communications and electrical impulses enters your sign, you may feel a surge of energy moving easily, supporting your communications, travel and gadgetry. The sign of Gemini or Virgo may figure more prominently. Do your presentation(s) before July 12, before Mercury goes retrograde. For Gemini: Expect fire and passion to fuel your ideas and communications. Along with Jupiter and Venus in your sign, everything is expanded; flirting now can mislead others by your words or actions, so be cool and careful. For Virgo: Your mind may now guide you in a more passionate way. Your presentations may have a grand flair to them. For All Signs: Bold statements and creative ideas come on strong now. The past, retrograde planetary affects dim in comparison to the transformational powers of the Sun; the planet that represents Leo. The Challenge: If you do come on too strong, have no expectations; enjoy the process, the journey and be prepared to explain yourself. The Best: Focus on the positive for best results. June 27 - Venus Turns Direct Most affected are Libra and Taurus. The Venus retrograde transit began on May 15. For Libra: Hopefully, you did not overspend. If you did, begin a new budget to repay it. Any disappointments, delays or disagreements in your Life will now begin to be on the mend. For Taurus: You can now move forward with your romantic or partnership plans as your ruling planet, Venus is once again direct and while Jupiter is in Gemini, it may expand the joy and take your relationships to the next level, the next realm. For All Signs: The planet representing Love, beauty and the senses returns to its’ direct motion. While it may have been challenging for couples, it may have also helped to review the relationship with others, our values, the relationship with ourselves. The best outcome may have been: To have reconnected with some pleasures or certain people from the past to re-experience, remind us of what didn’t work or to bring closure.

Hi-Desert Cultural Center Offers New Media Arts & Technology Courses Joshua Tree, CA - The Hi-Desert Cultural Center is announcing new state-of-theart multi-camera videography and postproduction courses that will run during the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013. The new classes represent another significant step in attempting to build a local base of creative and technically-skilled professionals in the burgeoning field of multi-media arts. Working with Copper Mountain College, this new collaboration builds on that of the past year. In the fall of 2011, the Cultural Center and College partnered to provide the college’s enrolled multimedia arts students with some muchneeded real-world experience. Under the experienced eye of college professor, Spelman Downer, and with guidance from Cultural Center president, Jarrod Radnich, the students have been filming the wide array of first-class entertainment offered at the Center – including jazz, blues, and classical concerts, top-rated comedy club acts, and dramatic “storytelling” performances. This upcoming fall season, students will also begin filming theatrical productions at the Center. “These new courses are

the next step by this desert region’s leading academic and arts institutions to provide vocational education and job training that is second to none,” explains Roger Wagner, Copper Mountain College President and Hi-Desert Cultural Center Advisory Board Member. Radnich, who was recently featured on NBC’s TODAY Show in a segment highlighting his work in pioneering music education, knows full well how important this educational opportunity is for the region’s economy. “With the building of the Center’s professional sound and film stage and post-production facilities at the Kaye Ballard Theater, we expect the Center to be a source of employment for upwards of thirty technical professionals in the arts and entertainment arena, and this vocational training partnership will allow our talented local residents to be able to fill those well-paying jobs.” Taught under the expert tutelage of Copper Mountain College professor and professional artist, Spelman Downer, the high-quality classes will significantly increase the breadth and depth of material and experience students will receive. In addition to utilizing computing and

Stop Snitching? Help or Hindrance? classroom facilities at the College and the Center’s theater spaces, students who participate in these non-credit classes will be able to take advantage of the Center’s state-of-the-art $30,000 hi-definition cinema projector, 28-foot wide screen, and 7.1 surround sound system to view and hear their work. Funding for the purchase of new hidefinition video camera equipment came from renowned artist, Simi Dabah. The College is also sharing in the provision of the specialized video equipment, providing the videography students with valuable experience on an array of equipment types. The new multi-camera videography and post production classes will be held at both the Hi-Desert Cultural Center and Copper Mountain College facilities in Joshua Tree, and some pre-requisites will apply. For more information or enrollment, contact the Cultural Center at 760.366.3777 ext. 1 or email info@ hidesertculturalcenter.com.

The “stop snitching” movement began in the late 1990’s from lyrics by rappers and advocates of non-action by not talking to police. It was previously referred to as “jail house rat.” The movement, infectiously sweeping through the public has become a cultural campaign spawning rap music and clothing apparel including t-shirts that display a stop sign and the word “snitching” under it. The “stop snitching” movement has gathered an entire generation of teens and young adults who refuse to talk to police for fear of being labeled a “snitch.” They more often avoid law enforcement even though violent crimes continually rips through their neighborhoods. “Stop snitching” is also used as witness intimidation saying that “snitches deserve to get stitches” The hindrance it poses to our trial system is devastating and is steadily growing. It erodes trust between communities and police, making it difficult to prevent and combat crime. Additionally, it impedes investigations, arrests, and convictions, making it difficult to remove violent offenders from communities. As a result, the “stop snitching” movement has caused national crime rates to rise. The “stop snitching” movement uses protection under the first amendment-free speech. Options to legally stop the movement

are limited. Obstruction of justice laws only punish those who actively inhibit witness testimony. New resources are being implemented in preventing witness intimidation such as witness protection programs and other programs aimed at building trust between communities and law enforcement. Think of all the crimes that go unpunished in our neighborhoods and all the victims of crimes such as robberies, other thefts, sexual assaults, home invasion, and even worse crimes. How would any of us feel if one of our loved ones were a victim of a crime? What if it went unpunished because witnesses felt threatened or didn’t want to be labeled as a “snitch”? START SNITCHING! Clean up our neighborhoods and protect our families. We should be the ones that teach our children the right things: to stand up for what is right; to being honest; to having integrity and good moral character. Do not let our children learn the ways of criminals who believe that they should be able to break the law and get away with it. We should control our neighborhoods instead of the criminals. Too many citizens are snitching because they don’t want the crime in their neighborhoods.

If we do not work with our police, we are basically telling criminals “come into our neighborhoods, take it over, do w hate ve r you want, we won’t do anything about it”. Get involved with your local Law Enforcement and the programs they offer, especially their community policing programs. Another way to get involved is to go on Ride-A-Long with your local police and witness firsthand what goes on in our communities on a daily/ nightly basis. For more information on getting involved in our community policing and to counter the “stop snitching” movement, contact The Moneé Group at info@themoneegroup.com, (760) 342-2977 or contact your local Law Enforcement agency. - by Charles Bennett Jr.

California Senate Rejects Drug Defelonization Bill Statewide California – Earlier this month, the California Senate roundly rejected Mark Leno’s bill SB 1506 to reduce penalties for simple possession of narcotics and dangerous drugs from a felony to a misdemeanor, by a vote of 11-24. The bill would also have eliminated felony penalties for hashish/concentrated cannabis. “With California’s prisons overflowing with violent criminals, it’s a sorry state of affairs when our lawmakers won’t adopt commonsense crime-reduction measures,” remarked Cal NORML director Dale Gieringer. “The legislature should be ashamed of kowtowing to law enforcement interests

with a vested interest in wasting taxpayer dollars on imprisoning victimless drug users.” Republican Sen. Doug LaMalfa of Butte County remarked, “With bills like this, I can see Amsterdam from the front porch of the Capitol.” However, Californians might well envy Amsterdam’s superior record with regards to crime, safety, and drug abuse. According to a Senate Public Safety Committee committee analysis: Thirteen states and the federal government punish simple drug possession as a misdemeanor. These jurisdictions have lower crime rates than felony states and higher rates of people entering treatment. In

states that charge drug possession as a misdemeanor, the average violent crime rate was 376.4 per 100,000 people. Among felony states, the average violent crime rate was 397.5. Misdemeanor states had an average property crime rate of 2,913.2 per 100,000. Felony states had a higher average property crime rate - 3,071.9 per 100,000. A 2011 poll by Lake Research Partners found that 72 percent of Californians favored reducing the penalty for drug possession to a misdemeanor. See the Senate vote on SB 1506. - by NORML

Study: Medical Cannibis Dispensaries Not Associated With Neighborhood Crime Statewide California - The establishment of medical cannabis dispensaries does not adversely impact local crime rates, according to a federally funded study published in the upcoming July issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs. Investigators at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) examined whether the proliferation of medical marijuana dispensaries is associated with elevated crimes rates. Researchers assessed the spatial relationship between density of medical marijuana dispensaries and two types of crime rates (violent crime and property crime) in 95 census tracts in Sacramento, California, during the year 2009.

Researchers reported: “There were no observed cross-sectional associations between the density of medical marijuana dispensaries and either violent or property crime rates in this study. These results suggest that the density of medical marijuana dispensaries may not be associated with crime rates or that other factors, such as measures dispensaries take to reduce crime (i.e., doormen, video cameras), may increase guardianship such that it deters possible motivated offenders.” Authors acknowledged that their findings “run contrary to public perceptions” and that they conflict with public statements made by the California Police Chief ’s Association, which had previously

claimed, “Drug dealing, sales to minors, loitering, heavy vehicle and foot traffic in retail areas, increased noise, and robberies of customers just outside dispensaries are common ancillary by-products of (medicinal cannabis) operations.” The UCLA is not the first study to dispute the allegation that brick-andmortar dispensaries are adversely associated with crime. A 2011 study of crime rates in Los Angeles published by the RAND Corporation similarly concluded, “[W]e found no evidence that medical marijuana dispensaries in general cause crime to rise.” However, shortly following its publication RAND removed the study from its website after

their findings were publicly criticized by the Los Angeles city attorney’s office. Other analyses of crime statistics in the cities of Denver, Los Angeles and Colorado Springs have separately disputed the notion that the locations of dispensaries are associated with elevated incidences of criminal activity. For more information, please contact Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director, at: paul@norml.org. Full text of the study, “Exploring the Ecological Association Between Crime and Medical Marijuana Dispensaries,” appears in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
