ECPD - what does it mean for Dental Technicians?

Standards for Dental Professionals: ● Standard 7.3 Update and develop your professional knowledge and skills.

Aim: ● To raise awareness of forthcoming changes to Continuing Professional Development for Dental Care Professionals in general, and Dental Technicians in particular.

CPD Outcome(s): ● To outline the changes from current CPD and the impact of those changes for Dental Technicians and CDT’s; ● To review the new development outcomes introduced by GDC, and their Plan, Do, Reflect, Record model. ● To identify the benefits of an effective Personal Development Plan.

What is ECPD? Enhanced Continuing Professional Development, or ECPD for short, is an enhanced version of the CPD currently in place for all Dental Care Professionals and is being introduced by the General Dental Council.

What are the main changes from the current CPD? There are five important changes you really need to be aware of: ■ The removal of non-verifiable CPD meaning an overall reduction of CPD hours for DCPs;

■ A requirement to make an annual declaration of CPD hours completed; ■ All registrants must have a Personal Development Plan (PDP) and log of activity; ■ A requirement to align CPD activity with the GDC’s ‘new’ development outcomes; ■ A requirement for DCPs to plan CPD activity according to their own “field(s) of practice”.

So, how many CPD hours does a Dental Technician need to do in future?

■ For Dental Technicians the minimum per 5-year CPD cycle is 50 hours.

■ For Clinical Dental Technicians the minimum per 5-year CPD cycle is 75 hours.

To encourage you to do regular activity, there will be a minimum of 10 hours CPD for every two consecutive CPD years.

When does ECPD come into effect?

These changes come into effect on 1 August 2018 for all dental care professionals except dentists, for whom it takes effect from the 1st of this month.

What should a Personal Development Plan look like and what is an Activity Log? What are the GDC’s new learning outcomes?

As you will know, the Standards for the Dental Team set out the ethical principles of dental practice, and in ECPD these standards

ECPD - what does it mean for Dental Technicians?... continued... are at the forefront of CPD planning and activity through four development outcomes; from August 2018 you will need to map each of your activities to at least one development outcome.

As before, there is a list of recommended topics which currently looks like this:

■ Medical emergencies; ■ Disinfection & decontamination; ■ Materials & equipment (dental technicians); ■ Legal & ethical issues; ■ Complaints handing; ■ Oral cancer: early detection; ■ Safeguarding children and young people; ■ Safeguarding vulnerable adults.

GDC’s ‘Plan, Do, Reflect, Record’ Model GDC’s plan, do, reflect, record model encourages you to proactively think about your professional needs, field of practice and the standards for the dental team before deciding on the right CPD activity for you. In this way, the GDC believes the activity will become more meaningful and relevant to the areas that you feel need to be maintained and built upon.

All I Want for Christmas Day in Blackpool People in recovery, and other groups who find it hard to access NHS dental services in Blackpool received essential dental treatment onboard a mobile dental unit operated by Dentaid. The project was funded by Horizon, Blackpool Council’s drug, alcohol, and nonclinical sexual health support for Blackpool residents – and was the brainchild of Carole Houston, Communications Lead for Horizon, Janet Goodwin, President of the Oral Health Foundation and Blackpool resident, and Pam Swain, Chief Executive of the British Association of Dental Nurses, which is based near Blackpool. The event was attended by Deputy Chief Dental Officer, Eric Rooney.

Carole’s previous PR experience in dentistry had led to her meeting Janet and Pam, and also made her aware of the work done by Dentaid. Having obtained funding from Horizon to commission Dentaid, Carole went ahead organising the Day at the Church Street centre used as a focal point for the recovery

programme, liaising with Janet Goodwin on oral health education materials provided by the OHF and with Pam Swain who asked for volunteer dental nurses from the BADN membership. Horizon volunteers, themselves in recovery, were also on hand to offer support to nervous patients.

Despite a couple of hiccups – fuses in the centre blew twice and the kettle and microwave had to be cannibalised to restore power to the mobile unit! - 47 patients were seen, including many who had been suffering long-term dental pain. One patient had 5 teeth extracted and a further 16 had at least one tooth removed. The team also provided scale and polishes, fillings, fluoride application for children and oral health advice. Several patients had not seen a dentist for several years, either because of access difficulties or because of previous difficult experiences.

“At Horizon we are very conscious” said Carole “that many of our clients find it difficult to access NHS dental treatment for various reasons. We therefore wanted to make dental treatment as accessible as possible for our clients and other vulnerable people in Blackpool. We commissioned the Dentaid team to bring their mobile unit into the heart of the recovery community in Blackpool to help to

break down any perceived barriers. The event was a tremendous success and the feedback from the patients was very positive. So many patients had been in desperate need of dental treatment but either didn’t know how to access treatment or were too anxious to seek help. This initiative was created especially for our clients, bringing dental treatment directly to them.

“We were delighted that Eric Rooney came along to support the event, and his ideas for bringing various services together to improve access to dental care for our clients in future was a perfect outcome from a very successful day.”

A FAB Three Days!

With learning and networking opportunities available to dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental nurses and dental technicians, the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s (BACD) Annual Conference was another resounding success this year.

Key lectures of interest to dental technicians included Phil Reddington’s hands-on workshop on effective anatomical wax ups for provisionalisation, and Dr Rahman’s session on utilising e.max crowns.

Keynote speaker, Dr Francesca Vailati, also proved a hit, demonstrating her Three-Step technique for full rehabilitation.

There were also plenty of opportunities for delegates to interact with both the speakers and colleagues throughout the event, whether around the exhibition or during panel discussions.

In addition, the black-tie Gala Dinner provided a delicious meal and exciting entertainment, with the The Rock’N’Roll theme going down particularly well as delegates danced the night away!

Dr Keith Winwood joins the DTA team as Editorial Assistant Keith, who is the programme leader at Manchester Metropolitan University for the joint MSc Clinical Science Reconstructive Science course with Kings College London, will be joining the DTA Editorial team from 1st January 2018.

Keith initially trained as a dental technician at Matthew Boulton College before studying for his BSc in Dental Technology at MMU and completing his PhD at Cranfield University.

He is a reviewer for the Journal of Dental Traumatology, Journal of Dental Materials Research, and the European Journal of Applied Physiology.

DTA President, James Green, commented ‘This is fantastic news for DTA, Keith will be a great addition to our Editorial team’.
