SPECIAL REPORT
Regulating pests in an environmentally conscious manner Fumigation is ubiquitous in Costa Rica due to an ingrained belief in the people. This has made fumigation the immediate response to any form of pests. It can even be seen as a routine, despite the absence of a pest. In this paper, the class of 2024 has investigated the implications of this practice, and the best way to go about fumigation from an environmentally conscious perspective. We consider the effects it has on the environment, including systems such as soils, air, and water. As well as the possible health issues humans face in using these pesticides. We also acknowledge the importance of the proper application of pesticides. In an effort to continue to manage pests, alternatives to pesticides are discussed that are more holistic, all while maintaining efficacy. Therefore, acknowledging the complexity of the systems of nature, and adapting. One evening, Ms. Carla Uribe, the IB Biology and Environmental Systems and Societies teacher, received a message through the admin group chat. The message declared that the school was scheduled to be fumigated, and teachers should open the windows and doors to air the classes out over the weekend. Ms. Carla was struck by this message as she wondered why we were fumigating in the first place. She then began to inquire teachers of all grades whether they had noticed any pests present in the classes. It was unanimously agreed that pests weren’t an issue. Confused, she proceeded to ask Jose Miguel, the head of administration, why the fumigation needed to occur. The answer was simply custom — although he was open to looking into alternatives. She proposed to put the process of fumigation on hold, where it sits today, in order to investigate the matter fur-
ther. In 2011 the United Nations published a report claiming that Costa Rica was one of the largest importers of pesticides globally. The Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA) reported that over the course of 1977 to 2006, Costa Rica imported 184, 417 metric tons of pesticides. To this day, 12 million kilograms of pesticides are brought in annually. Why is such an environmentally progressive, and conscious country contributing so heavily to the pesticide industry? In an interview with Jessica Sheffield, the executive director of Guardianes de la Naturaleza and co-founder of Del Mar Academy, she stated that this issue goes further than the infrastructure that lies in place. Instead, it is deeply ingrained into the culture and mindset of Costa Rica. It has become an instinct to resort to pesticides when any form of a pest arises. Although, it is seldom that the implications or alternatives are considered. Due to the interests of the school, in cultivating the “caring for the environment and the community”, as the Del Mar Academy mission statement reads, it is crucial to determine the safest environment possible, whether this is with or without the use of pesticides. The use of pesticides Pesticides are used to control pests in the environment, including air, water, plants, and soil. They control various organisms such as mosquitoes, ticks, ants, rats, and cockroaches, but reckless or incorrect use of pesticides can harm the environment. “It should be used only if it is extremely necessary, but not otherwise” as Roberto Quirós, a biologist graduate at the Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) mentioned during an interview.

By avoiding a species, several species can be affected, therefore it’s better to avoid the use of pesticides overall. Often, pesticides harm the environment due to their inability to biodegrade. This causes these chemicals to bioaccumulate in the food chain. This is the process of when an organism consumes pesticides and given this quality of the inability to be broken down, it simply accumulates in the animal until reaching lethal levels. The organism is then consumed by another organism, and this cycle moves up the food chain into another process called biomagnification. This is the passing of chemicals up the food chain until reaching the apex predators. This can cause a large imbalance in the food chain, as food for animals in higher trophic levels only becomes more and more contaminated, leading to the death of many organisms that regulate the food chain. These effects can even be noted in very low trophic levels. Insect ecology is the study of the relationships between insects and the environment. These organisms are a group of living beings of vital importance in ecosystems, responsible for pollinating and decomposing organic matter, as well as dispersing seeds. Pesticides have also been seen to have massive effects on the ground we stand on. Karla Hidalgo, Biotechnologist at the Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje (INA), stated during an interview, “The use of pesticides affects the microbiology of the soil.” Soil microbiology is a branch of science that studies soil microorganisms, as a microbial habitat and biochemical processes. The soil is considered a living organism in which microorganisms play a fundamental role through the transformation processes of organic matter, contributing to fertility. Throughout the interview, Karla Hidalgo
mentioned to us that pesticides in agriculture and urban environments have the potential to pollute the air, harming human, animal, and plant health. In some studies carried out by the Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje (INA), it has been verified that some pesticide ingredients remain in the atmosphere for a short time — while others can last longer — pesticides released into the air can settle on the ground and be broken down by sunlight and water in the atmosphere, or they’ll dissipate into the moving air. At the level of environmental impact, natural pesticides prevent the contamination of soils and water sources, since they disintegrate quickly and are not toxic to humans or animals. In relation to the use of agrochemicals in agriculture, such as insecticides, fertilizers, or pesticides, “pesticides contain drift, which is why they do not remain localized in the place where they were applied,” said biotechnologist Hidalgo. Pesticide drift can travel through microdroplets that the wind will carry to nearby places and through currents of water; every time it rains, this drift of pesticides can contaminate aquifers through the soil. Alternatives Meanwhile, natural or organic pesticides have a faster degradation than agrochemical pesticides, by means of ultraviolet rays — their residual effect is very low. Right now, the Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje (INA) has provided a technological option for organic agriculture producers, changing agrochemical pesticides for fungi and bacteria (Microbial pesticides), which control different pests — thanks to the use of these organic pesticides, it has been possible to demonstrate which has been a profitable use for farmers.

Effects of pesticides on humans Schools are the house of the children of our future generations, they teach and prepare the children of the world for adulthood. With this in mind, it is imperative that we keep these places safe for our children, with zero interruptions within their learning. This is of utmost importance, as these learning environments could largely impact students’ learning and development. Due to this, we need to make sure that we can do everything to prevent any pests from appearing. According to Esmeralda Castro, a biologist in the community, the best thing that we can do is make sure everything is clean, maintaining proper hygiene. Hygiene being kept within the school grounds could eradicate the need for us to fumigate within the school grounds at all. With this in mind, we should make sure that during the rainy season, we don’t leave water in buckets, tires, or other objects. By doing this simple task, we could make sure diseases like dengue are prevented and not allowed to propagate within the school grounds. Due to their pattern of activity, body size, ability to absorb nutrients, and vulnerability to developing their immune system, children are more likely to experience the negative effects of pesticides. According to the article “Environmental Hazards To Young Children” written by Dorothy Noyes, 22% of children have chronic coughs in the United States — environmental exposure to pesticides is likely to be the cause of this. In a study conducted by Kavitha Kurungati “Ef-
Whether pesticides are safe for human health or not comes down to how the chemicals are being used. Bug Busters, a fumigation company in Costa Rica, ensures that their pesticide use is done in an “educated and correct manner” — placing human health as their number one priority. The equipment and chemicals used for fumigation are essential for safe execution. Junior, the owner, has a double major in General Household Pesticides and termites — and states that his employees are properly trained when it comes to the handling of pesticides. When they are used incorrectly, human health can be placed at risk of multiple diseases: leukemia, asthma, parkinson, or lung cancer. Assessing the issue An essential part of the process that is unanimously agreed upon by many experts is the assessment of the situation. This is an attempt to question the traditional custom of fumigation. This can be done through various levels of rigor. At the most primitive level, one can simply observe if pests interfere with the space in an undesired way. Furthermore, it is important to consider the holistic manner of our ecosystems. If a pest is interfering, question yourself if the pest is
truly inhibiting your ability to function in the space. Consider the implications of removing this species from the local environment, and whether these outweigh the given negative qualities of its presence. Furthermore, conventional pesticides aren’t necessarily the most appropriate option. Be open to alternatives that are simply adding to the system in a premeditated fashion. These options mimic nature in a far closer way, creating a more complex and biodiverse system. Naturally, making the implementation of pesticides much more environmentally conscious and sustainable

La salud no es un privilegio
Diciembre 2023
Areil Dagan Nosara, Guancaste.1
