NOWER HILL NEWS
From The Headteacher
Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome to the Easter edition of the Nower Hill News, as another term draws to an end We are all looking forward to the holidays, but I am not sure that the weather got the memo! Let’s hope that it will be kind to us and we can enjoy some time off in the warm Spring sunshine
I hope you enjoy reading about everything that’s been going on in school this half term as much as I have; I do sometimes wonder how my colleagues find time to teach such great lessons, in addition to organising all the wonderful extra-curricular events that they do I am sure you would wish to join me in thanking them all for their commitment to our young people, and their determination to offer our students such a wide variety of experiences
As I write, I can hear the squeals of excited children drifting along the corridor from the hall – no, not our own this time, but the wonderful annual event that is the staff children’s Easter party. Each year on the penultimate afternoon of the Spring term, our staff bring their young children and grandchildren in for a lovely Easter party, when they can meet their parents and grandparents’ colleagues and see exactly where it is that mum/dad/granny/grandpa disappear to every day! It is always a lovely event, organised by our great Support Staff, ably assisted by the GCSE Child Development students and willing 6th Formers, who help with crafts, face painting, activities and Egg hunts. I love this event because it is a reminder of the close community we enjoy at Nower Hill which makes this such a special place for us to work, and therefore, for your children to learn.
And on the subject of learning, you know that I can’t let an opportunity pass to remind you of the importance of these holidays for our students taking exams. The Easter holidays are a crucial revision period for our GCSE and A Level students and for our Year 10s, who will be sitting assessments on their return. We really appreciate your support in ensuring that your child finds a good balance between relaxing and enjoying their time off school (please see Page 30, where you can find out about lots of free activities in Harrow over the holidays), and preparing really well for their exams
It is worth remembering that the best way to avoid exam stress is to be well prepared and confident!
Finally, you will have read the letter from Ms Sabbagh earlier this week about our ‘behaviour refresh’ after the holidays I thank you in advance for going through this carefully with your child and reminding them of the importance of adhering to the 3 basic rules at all times. As mentioned in the letter, we are delighted with the excellent conduct of the majority of our children, however I think we would all agree that it is not right to allow a very small number of students to disrupt learning and the smooth running of the school, nor tarnish the good reputation of our school in the local community
I end by wishing all of our families a very enjoyable, restful holiday; happy Easter to those who will be celebrating on Sunday and to our Muslim families, Eid Mubarak for later in the holidays.

Glee Club

On the morning of Sunday 18th February 2024, 31 of Nower Hill’s talented Glee Club arrived at Millfield Theatre, Edmonton, for the competition they had been eagerly awaiting and working tirelessly towards for the last 4 months: The Jack Petchey Foundation Glee Club Challenge. Led brilliantly by Nower Hill singing teacher and Glee co-ordinator Beth Leighton, and with the support of Mrs Johnson and Miss Hamilton, the students spent the whole day rehearsing and readying themselves for the evening’s tough competition against 9 other Glee clubs from North London. In front of a packed auditorium, the students performed outstandingly, not only securing a place in the Jack Petchey Glee Club Challenge Grand Final at Indigo at the O2, but were also awarded the highest mark of all 10 Glee Clubs! As one of only two Glee clubs from state schools rather than Performing Arts schools, this result is even more impressive. We are so proud of the Nower Hill Glee Club and cannot wait to cheer them on in the Grand Final on Sunday 28th April. Tickets are available now and available to anyone – we would love to see even more of our Nower Hill community there to support: https://www axs com/uk/events/531790/the-jackpetchey-glee-club-challenge-tickets?skin=indigo

JACK PETCHEY REGIONAL FINAL
Desarae Wins First Place at the Jack Petchey Regional Final
On Thursday 14th March, the Harrow Regional Final of Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge took place at Bentley Wood High School. Kajory and Desarae in Year 10 represented Nower Hill at this highly prestigious event, which is the largest public speaking programme in England, managed and delivered by Speakers Trust who are the UK's leading public speaking charity. Both students worked incredibly hard on their speeches and performed fantastically on the night
Up against intense competition, Desarae emerged victorious Desarae's speech, titled ‘Passion’, emphasised the importance of finding and pursuing one's passion. According to Desarae, passion serves as the driving force behind a fulfilling life and can lead to remarkable achievements. This powerful message resonated with the judges, leading to Desarae's win at the regional final.

The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge provides free communication skills training to Year 10 students in every state school in London and Essex. Through these workshops, over 30,000 young people are empowered each year. The programme, supported and funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation, aims to amplify the voices of young people, building their confidence, developing their skills, and creating platforms for them to share their stories and ideas.

Reflecting on the experience, Desarae said, "JPSOC has been a wonderful experience. I've not only been able to learn, but also gain confidence and share my message with everyone." This statement encapsulates the transformative power of the Speak Out Challenge, which not only equips students with valuable communication skills but also boosts their self-confidence and gives them a platform to share their unique perspectives
Desarae's victory is testament to the power of passion and the importance of effective communication. It is a proud moment for the English Faculty, Nower Hill High School and a significant achievement in Desarae's academic journey.
We are incredibly proud of both Desarae and Kajory’s achievement and look forward to seeing them continue to use their voices to effect positive change in society
Ms DaleUCAS DICOVERY EXHIBITION 2024
On Tuesday 19th March, all 202 of our Year 12 students had the opportunity to be at the event hosted by UCAS, at ExCeL London at the Royal Victoria Dock. Students had the chance to listen to live expert talks, enquire about course options and career pathways offered, get the latest advice and speak to university exhibitors directly.
Students can also continue to receive university and course information directly via their scanned event ticket after attending the exhibition event.
UCAS Discovery is a major event which hosts over 100 universities, colleges, and apprenticeship employers face-to-face. Our trip to this annual exhibition provides a valuable opportunity for all our Year 12 students and it is a key date in our 6th Form calendar. The exhibition marks the advent of our Year 12 students starting to research in earnest their future study choices and pathways and the “in person” experience helps direct them in exploring the full range of options available to them.

6th FORM CHARITY EVENTS

During the Spring term, each 6th Form Tutor Group plans and runs their own fundraising initiative in aid of their designated House charity. The money raised by each Form is combined to form an overall House total.
These fun events give students a chance to raise money for a good cause, at the same time as helping them to develop project management and team-working skills. Events which have taken place, or are due to take place, before the Easter holidays include:
Sponsored walk, raffle, guess the weight of the sweets, Easter scavenger hunt, dodgeball tournament, Mother’s Day sale, ‘Ironman’ challenge, ‘Go Green’ challenge, thrift shop, bake sale, production refreshments, sponsored silence, sponge a teacher, sponsored run, table tennis tournament and a Valentines Day card/lollipop delivery service.

At the time of writing, Nightingale is in the lead having so far raised over £600 through selling refreshments at the school production of Footloose and a sponsored run, with the combined total of the monies raised by all the houses so far standing at an impressive £2,800 We look forward to enjoying the remaining events our 6th Formers have in store and to seeing what amount the final total will reach

Pride Club
The Nower Hill Pride Club has been meeting each Monday lunchtime, providing a place for our LGBTQ+ community and allies to meet. While enjoying the complimentary snacks, students have reviewed resources for displays, contributed to the LGBTQ+ History Month assemblies that took place in February and enjoyed a poster-making workshop, using LGBTQ+ slogans, led by the Arts Faculty. We look forward to working with the Pride Club to celebrate Pride at Nower Hill in June.

School Council

House update

The Nower Hill School Council meets each half term, with two representatives from every Form in Years 7 to 11. Each meeting has a main item for discussion, which is shared in advance so that Form Representatives can discuss ideas with their Forms and bring them to the School Council meeting the following week So far this year, we have had rich discussions about diversity and culture week, the rewards system and rewards events as well as looking at the results of our wholeschool student survey and identifying changes we can make to ensure that Nower Hill remains a great place to come to school each day.
Throughout March, our fantastic team of House leaders delivered assemblies to their Houses, featuring video montage of the fantastic events that have taken place so far this year. Hundreds of students have taken part in events, including the Great Humanities House Quiz, Capturing Harrow photography competition and House Football and Netball. They also promoted our House Charity Food Collection for Milman’s Day Centre and the Harrow Foodbank. A huge thank you to all of the students who have taken part in competitions so far this year and good luck to those entering the Summer Term events. So far, Gandhi are leading the overall House Conduct competition, but it is all to play for next term!

NOWER HILL NEWS
In March we held our annual charity collection, with students encouraged to donate items that will be shared between Milman’s Day Centre and the Harrow Foodbank Once again, our Nower Hill community has shown their incredible generosity, with 1,000 items donated and almost half a tonne of food and essential items going directly to these great causes in time for the Easter holiday.
Shabazz House retained the House Charity shield, by contributing the most items, but it was a fantastic effort from all our Houses.
Thank you to everyone who made a contribution and to our committed team of House leaders and 6th Form helpers who coordinated the collection!

YEAR 11 DUKE OF EDINBURGH
Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award celebration
On Wednesday, 28th February, we were delighted to be able to present 84 Bronze DofE awards to our brilliant Year 11 students. We were very pleased that Charley Kondje, our DofE operations manager, was able to come into school to help present the awards to our students. Charley praised the hard work, commitment and resilience shown by our young people in completing the award and spoke about how every young person should be incredibly proud of their achievement. As a Year group they have given over 996 hours of their own time volunteering in our community, developing new skills, committing to regular physical exercise and undertaking a 3 day expedition and training weekend
The DofE programme is a nationally and internationally recognised award that students can proudly add to their CVs and university or college applications It helps our students build on the skills of leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative, communication and teamwork.
We would also like to recognise the hard work of all the staff involved which enables us to run the programme. As always, it takes an incredible community to support such an endeavour and we are very thankful. Our Year 11 Bronze graduates will now have the opportunity to sign up for the silver level DofE award which will run in Year 12; more information will be shared in an assembly later this year

Eight of our most exceptional Year 13 A level biologists were selected to compete in the ‘British Biology Olympiad’ on Tuesday 30th January 2024. This highly challenging competition is designed to recognise excellence in young biologists, develop problem-solving skills and to challenge them in their thinking about biological ideas Some of the best biology students complete it nationally every year, with more than 10,000 students from over 700 schools taking part this year. All of our students really did themselves and us proud and a big well done to Hadiya Ahmad for achieving a Silver medal and performing in the top 15% of students Our sincere congratulations to all of our students!
Ms AkhoundzadehMedia Studies –BBC Apprenticeship Scheme
Recently, we had a visit from ex Nower Hill student (and Media Studies student), Jocelyn Brennan to deliver a short seminar to all Media Studies students, in regards to her experience of being a part of the BBC Apprenticeship Scheme. Jocelyn informed the students what her daily work schedule consists of, skills that she has learnt so far, what the apprenticeship programme encompasses and the experiences she has been a part of ('Strictly Come Dancing', 'Doctor Who 60th Anniversary' & 'Children In Need' are the some of the many texts that she has worked on) The students were captivated by Jocelyn's career at the BBC so far and I think her talk sparked an interest for our students, perhaps pursuing a career within the Media industry.

NATIONAL CIPHER CHALLENGE 2023/24
The National Cipher Challenge has been run by the University of Southampton Mathematics Department since 2002 and has attracted a wide following. Cabinet Ministers, media scientists, journalists, authors and actors are just some of the fans of this competition. The challenge is a code breaking competition written for UK secondary school and 6th Form students of Mathematics and Computer Science. It has always had a wide following among teachers and parents and across a range of age groups

We are delighted to announce that 2 teams representing Nower Hill High School have been awarded Silver medals in this year’s National Cipher Challenge. Leon He (Year 13) led a solo venture into the competition, and a second team consisting of some of our brightest Year 12 Further Maths students in Shaan Bharj, Nikhilesh Butti, Jai Mashru and Aryan Karadkar. The judges were very impressed by their submission and they have been invited to attend a prize giving ceremony at Bletchley Park on Wednesday 28th February to receive their award.
The students have been offered a private tour of Bletchley Park, which was once the top-secret home of the World War Two codebreakers followed by talks by leading Mathematicians such as Professor Kit Yates. There will also be an opportunity to meet delegates from sponsors of the competition such GCHQ, IBM and Netcraft.

A truly fierce competition, we would like to wholeheartedly congratulate Leon, Shaan, Nikhilesh, Jai and Aryan for their success in the competition and inspiring other students at the school to participate in the competition in the years to come.

Poetry workshops
On Monday 4th March, the English Department was lucky enough to welcome the poet Professor Daljit Nagra MBE to the school to deliver Poetry workshops to small groups of Year 10 and KS5 Language & Literature students. The students who took part read poetry, discussed ideas and wrote their own pieces, drawing on their cultures and interests.
The following review from one of our Year 10 students summarises the students’ experience perfectly:
‘Attending the poetry workshop was an enjoyable and enlightening experience. It was great to learn that poetry doesn't always have to be serious and formal; it can be relaxed and even use slang I really enjoyed the freedom to express myself through writing my own poem in a way that I didn’t think poems could have been written One thing that stuck with me was about how poetry isn't just for very intelligent people; it's for everyone, and it can be as fun and casual as you want it to be Overall, it was a fun and eye-opening experience that challenged my assumptions and misconceptions about poetry ’

The Library has been lucky enough to have been used for several interactive workshops this past term. We have had interesting sessions with both a poet and a writer and we also had The Grassroots company running workshops for mixed year groups We have continued to withdraw many non-fiction books following on our withdrawal of fiction books before Christmas. This has allowed us to reassess our current book stock and has given us the opportunity to buy new stock.
Lots of withdrawn books have been donated to North Harrow Library and a local school.
If anyone can suggest or has links with a charity or education organisation either in the UK, or abroad that would like to receive some withdrawn books, please let us know The books are in good condition and would be a benefit to any educational organisation or charity.
