From The Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers

This term has been packed full of amazing opportunities for the students of Nower Hill 2025 has begun incredibly successfully. You will read in this issue about all sorts of events and activities that show our school at its best.

We have been honoured and awarded for our successes We were proud to be recognised by the Schools, Students and Teachers Network (SSAT) for achieving attainment in the top 10% of similar schools in the country for our GCSE results last year. Our students have been achieving remarkable things; many were recognised in the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards, 214 were awarded in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge, our Glee choir were selected to perform in Barnardo's National Choir Competition at Birmingham Symphony Hall, and our STEM club have won two awards in the LEGO League Challenge. Many of our sports teams are winning great accolades and playing brilliantly as teams, with notable success in table tennis, netball, and both girls and boys football You can read more about all of this success inside.

I hosted a lovely afternoon tea party with two children from each year group who had made a big improvement this term in the number of achievement points they have received We discussed how they were excellent role models for students across the school It was wonderful to hear about their achievements and all the things that they are enjoying most about school

School days are about learning in the classroom, but also the enjoyment we get by discovering passions and interests In this edition you will find it jam packed with experiences within and beyond the curriculum There is a wonderful write up of the production, which was a true highlight this term.

As ever, I want to thank all families for your ongoing support of the school I hope you have a wonderful break with your families, and a very Happy Easter to all those in our community who celebrate

Nower Hill House System

Our House Competition continues, with King House extending their lead at the top of the leaderboard, and Nightingale with some work to do at the bottom! Our 6th Form House Leaders have led a fantastic series of assemblies to celebrate the successes from their Houses and coordinated our very first House Colours day as well as collating the donations from our Spring Charity Collection for the Harrow Foodbank. Keep your eyes peeled for lots of opportunities to get involved!

Annual Charity Collection

In March we held our annual charity collection, with students encouraged to donate items that will be delivered to the Harrow Foodbank Once again, our Nower Hill community has shown their incredible generosity, donating hundreds and hundreds of items of food and other essential items going directly to this great cause in time for the Easter holiday.

King House were comfortable winners of the House Charity shield, by contributing over a hundred items more than other Houses, but it was a fantastic effort from all our Houses.

Thank you to everyone who made a contribution and to our committed team of House leaders and 6th Form helpers who coordinated the collection!

YEAR 7 NEWS

Year 7 PTFA Spring Party

On Friday 14th March, Year 7 had their annual Spring Party hosted by the PTFA The event was a roaring success, with students showing off their dance moves and enjoying Pizza.

Samarth in 7GH had this to share about the event:

‘On Friday 14th March, I had one of the best times any Year 7 student could have. Initially, when it was announced that the tickets were selling, my mother asked me if I would like to go. I was hesitant to go as I thought to myself, “Will I have fun? Will it be enjoyable? Are any of my friends going?” I thought I should give it a try so I decided I should attend. When I got there I can honestly say all of my senses were kicking in! The music was booming into my ears, watching people dance and bust their moves on the dance floor and the taste of the most delicious, mouth-watering pizza in my mouth! It was truly one of the best times I've had so far at Nower Hill High School. Here’s to many, many more to come’

YEAR 11 - THE CHASE (FOR GCSE GRADES) IS ON!

As the Easter break approaches, our thoughts and minds again turn to GCSE examinations and the impact that a planned and effective revision strategy can have upon preparations, performances and outcomes. However, as educators we are acutely aware of the pressures and stresses that our students are under, and how they can at times feel lost amongst the expectations that we have of them and that they have of themselves.

Whilst we of course wish every student to reach their fullest potential, we want them to know and understand that they are not alone on their journey and that we are on hand to offer both support and advice.

To this end, we were delighted to welcome into school Mr Shaun Wallace (who many of you will recognise from ITV’s The Chase) who spoke to our Year 11 cohort in an assembly on Tuesday April 1st. Mr Wallace spoke candidly and passionately about his dreams as a young black man growing up in North London and the hurdles and set-backs that he faced and overcame in becoming (amongst other things) a barrister and the first black man to win Mastermind. Drawing on his own experiences, Mr Wallace explained the importance of having and working

towards dreams and goals, and how success and failure are merely steps on a path that we all can follow to realise these. All too often, students and society see the successes of individuals and ignore the barriers they overcame and the work they put in to get to where they are today, so it was lovely for them to hear first-hand about how these same celebrities have gone through (and continue to go through) the same issues that many of them face today.

Needless to say, we are extremely grateful to Mr Wallace for taking the time out of his busy schedule to speak to our Year 11 students.

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY ICELAND TRIP

Iceland: the country of geothermally heated water, lava and stunning scenery. 39 Geography students recently had the week of a lifetime over in Iceland where we got the opportunity to partake in some of the most breathtakingly spectacular activities. From walking behind a huge waterfall to seeing genuine lava flow right in-front of our eyes; this trip was like nothing else. It gave us the opportunity to learn about the country, make new friends with peers and explore a very rich culture that’s unlike the UK. Over the course of 5 days and 4 nights we travelled across the vast lands and hills to different parts of the country, spending each night at a different hotel. This arrangement was coincidently perfectly timed with aurora activity allowing us to see the most vivid and exquisite northern lights that you would never be able to see with a naked eye here in the UK. We watched the sky turn bright green and dance in its naturally beautiful pattern showing off what solar activity is all about.

Without our tour guides extreme dedication and the amazing help of all the fantastic teachers on the trip we would have not been able to do all the things we had planned. All the students gave phenomenal feedback saying how it was “The best trip of my life” and “I wish we could go back” The trip brought us all together as a group and opened doors for us into a whole new world.

CREATIVE FUTURES FAIR 2025

On Thursday 6th March, we invited 20 creative professionals into school to educate our students about opportunities in the Creative Industries.

GCSE TECHNOLOGY

This term, Year 10 Resistant Materials students successfully assembled various flat-pack furniture projects, demonstrating excellent teamwork and collaboration. Working together, they improved their problem-solving skills and efficiently assembled products, reinforcing their understanding of design principles taught in theory. Knockdown furniture demonstrates mass production, batch processing, showing how products are standardised for efficiency and minimal waste, all key aspects covered in GCSE Design and Technology.

Assembling flat-pack furniture reinforces key design principles, providing hands-on experience that deepens students' understanding of product design and real-world applications. IKEA’s flat-pack approach reduces packaging waste and transport emissions, linking to GCSE topics on sustainable design Students were familiar with the exploded isometric diagrams and instructions which highlight the importance of designing for consumers

GCSE CLASSICAL CIVILISATION

Year 9

As part of the Myth & Religion module of their GCSE, Year 9 students got up close and personal with their source material The Parthenon marbles, which have been the focus of a repatriation debate in recent years, gave us the chance to revise the mythical founding of Athens and the festival of the Great Panathenaia. In a little-known room nearby, we explored the symbolism of the Centaurs and Amazons in Greek art Some of our group are eagerly anticipating visiting the actual Parthenon in Greece over the Easter break!

Year 10

Over the past term, Year 10 Classical Civilisation students have been studying the art and archaeology of the Mycenaean Age

Through making their own, they have evaluated how useful Linear B tablets and frescoes are to historians. Next term, I look forward to sharing their clay figurines and Mycenaean jewellery with you!

Mrs Pankhania

Year 10 students continued their study of Mycenaean decorative arts this half-term.

The original figurines (left) are named after the Greek letters phi (Φ), psi (Ψ) & tau (τ) because of their shapes. They could have had a spiritual or decorative function, but archaeologists can’t be sure without more written sources from the time.

Year 10 created their own figurines (right), some of which have significance to them. You might be able to spot the miniature dachshund, snakes and psi figurines!

COOKING FOR MYSELF WORKSHOP

Leaving home for the first time as many of our Year 13 students will do next October brings adventure and excitement It also brings challenge, particularly when it comes to the important business of preparing nutritious meals on a tight budget. These students attended a cookery workshop run by a professional chef from our catering suppliers, Caterlink where they were shown some cookery skills and some tips on preparing healthy food when both money and time are in short supply.

BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD

Inspiring Year 10

This year, 180 Year 10 students are embarking on the challenge of completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award This internationally recognised program encourages young people to develop resilience, teamwork, and independence through expeditions, new skills, physical activities, and community service. As the largest DofE provider in Harrow, we are incredibly proud of our students’ dedication and achievements Here’s what the experience has meant to two of our Year 10 participants

Ms Tomlinson

Duke of Edinburgh Experience

Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award has been one of the best decisions I’ve made It has pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to create a change in society. Before this, I wasn’t even aware of the many volunteering opportunities available, but through DofE, I discovered how I could contribute. For my skills section, I worked on a mental health workbook, which not only deepened my understanding of emotional regulation but also provided practical tips that I now apply in my daily life For my volunteering section I volunteered at a charity dedicated to reducing loneliness among the elderly which has broadened my perspective, helping me see the world through a more compassionate and informed lens. I highly recommend DofE to anyone who has the opportunity to participate. I haven’t completed my expedition yet, but I’m looking forward to an exciting and adventurous experience, just like the previous sections have been.

Kalyani Sharma 10NH

Volunteering Experience

For my volunteering section for DofE, I volunteered at Red Trust Bushey, a charity that aims to build a community in Little Reddings, Bushey. They offer a food bank, open on Tuesdays, an after school club on Thursdays and a charity café open on Saturday. I volunteered at the café on Saturdays for one hour each week, where I helped to set up the café before opening time and I took orders and served visitors and helped to wash up equipment. I really enjoyed this volunteering experience as I enjoyed helping people in the community and helping with the café I believe that my communication skills have been developed through this volunteering experience as I became used to taking orders from people and serving them, which was a new experience for me. I also feel like my teamwork and organisation skills have been developed as I worked with other volunteers and staff members in a café environment. I had to make sure that everything was set up and ready before the cafe opened and take orders correctly. This experience was very enjoyable and I liked helping people with the café team. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience volunteering at Red Trust Bushey especially as I am considering working in the catering industry when I am older and this experience has introduced me to what working in this industry could be like.

YEAR 12 LATIN OXBRIDGE OPPORTUNITIES

Over the past few weeks, the Year 12 Latin students Martha and Riya have taken part in some fantastic super-curricular opportunities, furthering their understanding of the classical world

On the 25th of March our Year 12 and 13 Latinists were invited to attend a lecture at Harrow School by Professor Llewelyn Morgan of Brasenose College, Oxford, exploring Ovid’s epic poem, Metamorphoses. Professor Morgan discussed how Ovid’s poem reflects a subversion of the epic genre, exploring several myths within the epic and its significance in Roman literature. The students found the talk engaging and insightful and feel it will be useful in their future study of Ovid over the A-Level Latin course

A week later, having applied and been successful, the Year 12 Latin students went to Cambridge for an Archaeology, Classics and Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic (ASNaC) taster day at Girton College. The day, starting at 10am and finishing at 4pm, was filled with university style lectures from each of the Directors of Studies of these subjects, making for an excellent introduction to the study of the classical world at undergraduate level The day also included a tour of the college and its stunning grounds, as well as a guided walk-through of the college’s own minimuseum, the Lawrence Room. There, the girls put to the test their newly acquired knowledge of basic level Ancient Greek from a lecture earlier in the day, translating the inscription of the college mummy, Hermione Grammatike as Hermione the teacher. Overall, the girls are grateful to have visited such a prestigious university, and feel they have been very fortunate in having the opportunity to have a taster of the Oxbridge experience

Martha and Riya both look forward to continuing their study of A-Level Latin, feeling spurred on and inspired by their recent opportunities.

YEAR 12 LATIN LLOYD’S INSIGHT DAY

On 24th March a group of Year 12 students visited the iconic Lloyd’s building in the City to find out about careers at the world’s leading insurance and reinsurance marketplace. They learned about the history of Lloyd’s and its current operations, that includes acting as insurers for Lewis Hamilton and Taylor Swift.

Our students had the opportunity to talk to various Lloyds’ employees and to ask questions about their roles Students also participated in a CV and interview workshop with Lloyds’ employees - they were given feedback on their CVs and practiced answering common interview questions

The early careers team talked about different opportunities at Lloyd’s for school-leavers and gave our students excellent advice on how to succeed when starting out in their careers: to always be curious and ask questions and to be willing to put yourself forward for different opportunities and experiences at work.

This was a truly inspiring day and was thoroughly enjoyed by our Year 12 students.

UCAS DISCOVERY EXHIBITION

On Tuesday 25th March, over 200 Year 12 students visited the UCAS Discovery London 2025 exhibition at the ExCeL London. Students immersed themselves in speaking to universities, enquiring about course options and finding out about career pathways offered. They also had the chance to listen to live expert talks and get the latest advice from UCAS about university research, applications and degree apprenticeships.

“I've found universities here I never knew existed”

“ It is an amazing place to visit and get to know the universities properly.” Venuk, Year 12 student

The visit was a key date in the 6th Form calendar for our Year 12 students and launched the start of their UCAS journey.

UCAS Discovery London hosts over 100 universities, colleges, and apprenticeship employers face-to-face. The exhibition provides a valuable opportunity for all our Year 12 students to speak to universities and employers directly and discover a wealth of information and insight from the “in person” experience - all under one roof

Two brothers leading the way

As we enter the Summer Term, our thoughts naturally tend to examinations But for Janak in Year 11 and his brother Nishil in Year 9, these thoughts (and the revision that goes with them) are having to be balanced with their table tennis commitments.

Having won his under 19 group competition back in February, Janak will be competing in the Nationals taking place in Wolverhampton this April

Not to be out done, Nishil placed runner up in the final in the under 16 group, and he (along with Janak) qualified for the Jack Petchey event in May.

Needless to say, we are delighted to share and celebrate in both boys’ achievements – born out of talent and hard work – and we wish them all the very best in their next round of competitive events
