From The Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers

As we reach the final half term of what has been an exceptional academic year, my first as Headteacher of this amazing school, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your unwavering support and encouragement. It has been a privilege to see our students grow, thrive, and seize the many opportunities available to them both inside and outside the classroom. Their contributions, energy, and spirit are what make Nower Hill such a vibrant and inspiring community

This edition of the newsletter is jam-packed with wonderful moments that showcase all it means to be a student of Nower Hill From international trips to Switzerland and Andalucía, to a rich variety of local visits, curriculum experiences, and guest speakers, students have embraced every challenge and experience with enthusiasm. The joyful images of Culture and Diversity Week, house competitions, and sporting excellence reflect not only their achievements but also the inclusive and celebratory ethos of our school

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all of the staff at Nower Hill, who work tirelessly to make these incredible experiences and successes possible. Their commitment, professionalism, and care for our students is truly inspiring, and it is their hard work, in the classroom and beyond, that enables our students to flourish. In particular, I would like to draw your attention to an article in this edition which celebrates one of our

longest-serving colleagues, Jon Mason, who is retiring this summer after an extraordinary 38 years of service to Nower Hill His contribution to our school community has been immense, and we wish him the very best for the future

It has been especially heartening to see how students have worked together, supported one another, and shown pride in all they do, whether competing on the sports field, exploring new cultures, excelling in house events, or engaging deeply with their learning We are so proud of everything they have accomplished and the positive way they represent Nower Hill in all they undertake.

Thank you once again for being such an important part of our school community I hope you enjoy reading about the many highlights of this half term and join me in celebrating the students’ and staff’s successes. Wishing you all a relaxing and enjoyable summer break.

Culture & Diversity Week 2025

All of our students enthusiastically embraced Diversity and Culture Week, taking part in a wide range of activities that celebrated our community. Throughout the week, the school hall was busy with events including Bhangra music, mehndi designs, mandala art, and the ever-popular K-pop session

On Thursday 26th June, students took part in a diversity workshop exploring how to challenge discrimination and the importance of allyship Through investigating a scenario, students reflected on how to stand up for others and promote inclusivity.

Cultural Dress Day, was a highlight of the week where many students proudly wore traditional clothing. The highlight for many was the Cultural Fashion Show in the Gristwood – a joyful celebration of identity, and culture.

This year has been packed with achievements, energy, and unforgettable moments. With a staggering 87,013 achievement points earned –Year 7 have truly set the bar high. Even more impressively, they’ve achieved the highest average Commitment to Learning score in the past four years, showing just how dedicated, focused, and fantastic they’ve been

From inspiring guest speakers to our Spring Party to exciting school trips and their very first sports day, it’s

been a whirlwind of activity – and things are only going to get more exciting as we head into Year 8 We can’t wait to welcome everyone back in September, refreshed, recharged, and ready for a big year ahead –the year they pick their GCSE choices!

Thank you to all our families for their support this year.

Year 8 Natural History Museum Trip

From 7th May-14th July, our Year 8 students went on an educational trip to the Natural History Museum, where they participated in an interactive workshop about space exploration. During the session, students worked in small teams to design and build LEGO Martian rovers They coded, tested, and analysed their designs before launching them on a Martian surface This experience allowed students to understand the importance of space exploration and the role museum

scientists play in this field. They also learnt how using models such as LEGO is essential for engineers when developing real world solutions.

Thank you to everyone who helped organise and accompanied the students on this memorable trip It would not have been possible without your support

Nower Hill House System

Year 12 Life After Nower Hill Week

Life After Nower Hill Week provides Year 12 students with an opportunity to participate in lots of interesting activities to help them think about their future and the different options available to them when they leave school Activities included a visit to the University of Reading, talks in school on higher education, student finance and wellbeing by university representatives, as well as presentations on the UCAS application process and guidance on personal statement writing.

Our students were grateful to representatives from Bank of America, Barclays and Invest 20-20, who talked about opportunities within their organisations and their recruitment and selection processes These employers gave great advice on how to produce

interesting CVs and excel at interviews and students were able to put this advice into practice during their mock interviews with employers

The employers commented on how articulate our students are and how much they are already doing to prepare for their next steps. Alumni of Nower Hill returned to school to talk about their career journeys since leaving school, including two apprentices who are doing higher and degree apprenticeships and thriving in their roles. Our Year 12s will undoubtedly have been inspired and challenged by all the activities that took place during this busy week.

Year 11 Prom

On Friday 20th June, we were delighted to hold our Year 11 Prom at The Blue Rooms, as a way of celebrating the end of the GCSE exams and the amazing success of our outgoing Year 11 cohort Although the Prom was very much about recognising and celebrating the year group’s achievements, we would be doing our colleagues a huge disservice if we weren‘t to take this opportunity to acknowledge publicly the impact which they have had on our students in supporting them both pastorally and academically over the past 5 years.

We know that both the students and those of you reading this, will join us in thanking them for their selfless and continued efforts and always going that extra mile! We very much hope that the Prom provided a fitting end to this chapter of our Year 11’ s time at Nower Hill, (although of course we are looking forward to welcoming many of them back into the 6th

Form) and will provide fond memories for them for many years to come

It really was a fitting way to both recognise and celebrate the achievements and commitment of the Year group during the past five years, and we look forward to celebrating with them on their results day in August.

We are incredibly proud of the young people that they have grown and matured into, and whatever their plans for post-16 study we wish them every future success.

With the very best wishes for the future,

Year 13 Prom

On Friday 27th June our Year 13 students celebrated the end of their exams and their time at Nower Hill. For the majority this has been 7 years of commitment and hard work culminating in their A Level examinations this summer. It was lovely to see everyone so relaxed and enjoying themselves after such a busy and demanding year. The Social & Prom Committee did a wonderful job decorating Grim’s

Dyke Golf Club in their theme colours of purple and gold, and there were some stunning outfits on display. A thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all and we wish all our Year 13 students a very relaxing and restful summer.

Monday 23rd June –

Friday 27th June 2025

The majority of students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of going into the world of work and applying the skills they gained at school to the workplace. Over 149 students were extremely proactive and found their own work experience by approaching personal contacts or by applying to companies offering work experience.

Here are some of the comments made by students:

‘All in all, it was a fantastic experience which gave me an insight into how organisations operate’

‘I enjoyed meeting with employers and learning about their life at work and what they do’

‘It really made me think about what I want to do and what my aspirations are’

‘So different to being at school, a long day and I was very tired’

‘Work experience helped improve my time keeping skills’

The photo below shows one of our students working at an estate agent in North West London, she thoroughly enjoyed her experience and would like to go into real estate.

The feedback from the employers who hosted our students spoke volumes about our students remarkable conduct and contributions. The employers were highly impressed, praising the students for their confidence, politeness, and willingness to learn. This recognition is a testament to the exceptional qualities and skills our students possess We take immense pride in their achievements

Congratulations to our students and we are sure the lessons learnt will guide them on their educational and career journey

Year 12 Law Trip

Witness for the Prosecution

On Thursday 10th July, our A Level Law students enjoyed an unforgettable trip to London to see Witness for the Prosecution at London County Hall.

This gripping courtroom drama brought key legal concepts to life, offering students a powerful insight into courtroom procedure, persuasive advocacy, and the dramatic twists of a criminal trial. A fantastic enrichment opportunity that sparked lively discussion and deepened understanding of criminal law in action

Media Studies

Competition Results

Recently, the Media Studies Department participated with ‘Into Film’ (a charity supported principally by the British Film Institute, Cinema First and Northern Ireland Screen, with the objective to put film at the heart of children and young people's educational, cultural and personal development) termly national competition which is always themed around a recent children's film release.

The competition was for students to design an exciting social media post including images and text to promote the film ‘Wicked’, using the key themes from the film, to be in with the chance of winning a prize Although our students did not win the national competition, we celebrated our students entries and awarded them in their assemblies as the submissions which we received were exceptional. Well done to our participants and particularly to our winner: Milaina Parmar in 7NN!

Students had 1-1 tutorials with Craig, performed as a whole ensemble and enjoyed a fantastic performance of a range of repertoire from Craig. We were also joined by 5 KS2 students from St. John Fisher Primary school.

Andalucia Trip

Last month, our GCSE Spanish students eturned from an unforgettable long weekend in the heart of southern Spain, where they immersed themselves in the rich culture and stunning landscapes of Andalucía.

??

The group of Year 9 and 10 students embarked on their Spanish adventure with visits to two of the region's most captivating cities: the coastal gem of Málaga and the historic wonder of Granada Despite temperatures soaring to what can only be described as truly scorching levels, the students' enthusiasm never wavered as they explored these incredible destinations.

In Málaga, students explored the fascinating Picasso Museum, discovering works by the city's most famous son, before stepping back in time at the well-preserved Roman Theatre and the impressive Alcazaba fortress. These visits provided perfect opportunities for students to practise their Spanish whilst experiencing the city's rich historical layers

The highlight for many was Granada, where students marvelled at the magnificent Alhambra palace complex and the stunning Cathedral. Walking through the intricate architecture of the Alhambra and the soaring Gothic spaces of the Cathedral brought their Spanish

studies to life spectacularly.

"The Alhambra was beautiful despite the scorching temperatures. Trips to the beach were always fun and the teachers tried to make the most of our time there The trip to Andalucía was very enjoyable and Ms Lewis, Ms Calin, Mr Blain and Mr Kilroy were fantastic," commented one Year 10 student "The trip was very entertaining and educational We were able to experience Spanish culture and language first-hand and enjoy various landmarks.“

The trip provided invaluable opportunities for students to develop their conversational Spanish skills and deepen their appreciation for Spanish history and culture.

My special thanks go to the staff members mentioned above who ensured the trip ran smoothly despite the challenging weather conditions, and to all the students who represented the school so wonderfully throughout their Andalusian adventure

Cuckmere: A Goodbye from Mr Mason

On Tuesday 24th June the Geography Department completed its final visit with Year 10 to Cuckmere Haven on the South coast. As ever seems to be the case, the weather was beautiful and the students were not only impeccably behaved but learned a lot from their visit to a very different landscape to the one they are used to in suburban London

The trip also marked a personal milestone for me It was my 105th since we began visiting the area over thirty years ago in 1994 It was also my final one as I am retiring from teaching at the end of this year Since I began teaching at Nower Hill in 1988, I have loved every minute of what has been a lifetime career It has been a privilege to work with so many inspirational colleagues, motivated and talented students and supportive parents. It just remains for me to say simply thank you. For everything.

Mr Mason

GCSE Classical Civilisation

Year 10 students completed their study of Mycenaean culture this half-term

Throughout their course, they have encountered funerary items and explored what they tell us about the Mycenaeans This topic allowed us to combine our archaeological knowledge with our creativity so that we could create graves for a cross-section of Mycenaean society.

The “burials” below represent the students’ take on Mycenaean traders, soldiers, kings, women and children. Each grave contains items including

jewellery, coins, figurines and weaponry.

Interestingly, there are parallels that can be drawn between this European culture and one recently discovered in South America, making the study of Classics even more relevant to understanding our shared global past

Mrs Pankhania

Latin, Classics & Oracy

Year 7 ended this year studying ancient theatre and what brilliant performances they have put on to end their first year at Nower Hill! They made their own masks (see below), wrote their own scripts in the style of Roman comedy, and performed to their peers using all the Oracy skills they have practised this year.

Year 8 have ended their LCO journey with the destruction and excavation of Pompeii. We have really enjoyed their insightful opinions on why archaeology matters, and what relevance the ancient world has today.

Well done to all 650 Year 7 & 8 LCO students this year who have brought their best effort to studying ancient cultures!

Year 9 Ancient History

Practical Lesson

Our Year 9 Ancient History students are currently studying the Persian Empire. To understand and be able to articulate how the Greeks fought the Persians effectively, they recently took part in our annual practical lesson, in which they learnt how to move in battle formation like real Greek hoplites. We were grateful to one of our Year 11 veterans, Zayd, who helped to coach the teams. Below is what some of the students said about the practical.

“We study Greek fighting styles in two topics, the Persians and Alexander the Great, so this gave us a really useful sense of what hoplites were trained to do. Acting this out was a great experience and it’s refreshing to do such a practical, hands-on lesson when the subject usually involves sitting in a classroom with pens and paper ” - Akida

“For the practical activity, we made shields that covered our bodies from neck to knee We separated the class into two groups and lined up with our shields locked together to create an overlapping shield wall The activity was fun and deepened my understanding of how the phalanx worked along with the skills required to do it such as staying in time and rhythm ” - Mriduka

“I really enjoyed the practical lesson, not only because it was a break from our regular lessons, but it also helped me understand the discipline of the Greeks I was really proud to take part in this Ancient History tradition and I’m really proud of my shield - it’s hanging on my wall!” - Devpratap

“The iconic Athenian victory at Marathon was all down to the phalanx formation. Making the shield was very timeconsuming, but fun The creativity of it all and the artistic freedom we had definitely played a vital role in our practical lesson, making it very enjoyable Of course, authentic Greek shields would have been noticeably heavier, because they were made from wood and bronze.” - Jaya

“The phalanx is the battle formation that the Greeks use This formation is very effective and uses lots of skill and coordination. We did a practical where we built a shield to represent the Greek shield I definitely recommend this to other students. The shield building takes a while, but is definitely worth it I’m just gutted I’m not going to do it again!” - Nikhil

“A phalanx involves shields overlapping like scales for protection and spears held up in the air at a certain angle to defend the hoplites from the opposition The practical helped me to understand the perspective of someone being in the phalanx ” - Tamara

“We had the opportunity to recreate the phalanx formation and move together while maintaining the formation so that we were able to understand how the Greeks fought It was important to understand and learn about the phalanx so in the future we can explain it thoroughly in exam questions Making the shield was very fun and it was nice to do something creative, as nowadays we don’t really get to do creative projects It was also nice to see others’ shields and their designs.” - Vidhi

“It took me over five days to complete the shield, especially with the challenge of making it neck to knee length It was rather messy, but the painting was fun to design. I learnt that the shield was very heavy and difficult to carry on one hand However, I found it an exciting experience working as a team. It was amazing looking at the other intricate shields However, the weather didn’t help as it was scorching hot!”

Year 9 Child Development

Nursery Project

Our Year 9 Child Development class undertook a project to design a prototype nursery for children aged 0-5 years. Students were tasked with creating a mock-up of their envisioned nursery, alongside a presentation explaining what makes their design unique and how it meets the developmental needs of young children

We are incredibly proud of the creativity, effort, and commitment each student demonstrated throughout this project. Here are some images showcasing the final outcomes of their impressive work.

Year 11 CREST Success

Congratulations to our amazing Year 11 students for achieving Silver CREST Awards after two years of dedicated work on their science projects. Their investigations explored exciting topics such as How do materials composition and structural/geometric design influence the long-term durability, longevity and sustainability of a bridge?, Investigating the safety, mechanics and efficiency of Aircraft; Factors affecting performance; The effects of environmental factors on psychology of male serial killers; Limonene: effects, extraction and industry Showcasing curiosity, creativity, and commitment throughout

A special well done to one group who went above and beyond to earn the prestigious Gold CREST Award for their outstanding work.

We are incredibly proud of all of our students for their effort, teamwork, and scientific thinking.

Climate Change

A point of view from an expert

On Thursday 10th July, Nower Hill hosted an expert in their field to discuss their views with our students from both Year 10 and Year 12 on the subject of climate change In line with Nower Hill's mission to challenge our students, the opportunity to listen to academics firsthand allows our students to develop their critical thinking skills, essential as learners progress through their academic career.

Dr. Sailesh Rao is a recognised expert on climate change, particularly focusing on the role of animal agriculture. He is the founder and executive director of Climate Healers, a non-profit dedicated to addressing climate change. While his views on the significant impact of animal agriculture on the climate are widely accepted, the extent to which a global vegan diet is the sole solution is a point of ongoing discussion and debate, even among climate scientists and environmental advocates.

AA Employer visit

Last month some of our students had the opportunity to gain some practical motor mechanics experience when a former student, who is now an AA patrol officer, brought his AA van into the school car park. He was joined by two colleagues and their vans. The patrol officers demonstrated basic mechanic skills to the students and then the students had the opportunity to do puncture repairs Our students were curious to know how the equipment worked and asked lots of questions Thank you to the AA for taking time out to inspire our students

Sports Day

Friday 11th July 2025

Sports Day this year was held at Hillingdon Athletics Stadium in Uxbridge. Despite the hot weather, which resulted in the day being shortened, plenty of sun cream being applied and many ice creams consumed on the day, students were enthusiastic to get involved in their events and activities

As always, the competition was intense in the traditional athletics events held on the track, and on adjacent all weather field, students not only competed in alternative sports day events, but also their recreational inflatable activities, which as ever proved as a great way for students to enjoy themselves when not competing.

The addition of recreational badminton also proved

popular amongst the students, a great suggestion from the Year 10 student voice, and likely a new staple in the Sports Day programme.

Congratulations to Shabazz house for claiming the title of overall Sports Day Champions, as the competition was fiercely contested across all year groups and forms

The running of Sports Day was successful due to the combined efforts of staff from all across the school, and my thanks goes out to all those who contributed, whether large or small, to the setup, management, organisation and atmosphere of the day.

Year 7 Boys’ Cricket

On Tuesday 8th July 2025, the Year 7 cricket team travelled to Stanmore Cricket Club to play in the Harrow Borough Cricket Final against Whitefriars School. Nower Hill won the toss and chose to put Whitefriars in to bat first. Some excellent bowling by Heerv, who took 3 wickets, and Garvit, Ahmadullah and Ayaan who all took one wicket each, restricted Whitefriars to 92 runs off 12 overs. In response, Heerv and Bhagath put together an impressive 51 run partnership, but unfortunately it was not quite enough as Nower Hill only managed to score 86 runs in their 12 overs, which meant they fell 7 runs short of the victory. Although the team were unsuccessful this year in winning the competition, they should be very proud of themselves and the platform they have built, which will only get stronger over the next few years

The Year 7 Boys’ cricket team have had a fantastic season this term. They finished top of their group after winning all three of their group games. Their first match was against Salvatorian College where they batted first. Nower Hill managed to score 88 runs off 12 overs. Garvit scored an impressive 46 runs, supported by Heerv and Tejas who scored 9 runs each. Nower Hill then managed to bowl out Salvatorian for just 24 runs - an impressive start to their campaign

In their second match against Whitmore High School, Whitmore batted first and were restricted to just 53 runs off 10 overs Excellent bowling by Ahmadullah who took 2 wickets, and Heerv and Tejas who took

one wicket. In response, Nower Hill managed to chase the total in just 4 overs, with Garvit top scoring with another impressive 33 not out and Aaryan supporting with 10 not out.

The third group match was against Rooks Heath School. They batted first and made 95 runs off 10 overs. Heerv took an impressive 4 wickets, while Garvit and Tejas took 2 wickets each Nower Hill then batted and managed to chase down the total in just over 7 overs, with Garvit top scoring again with an outstanding 76 not out and Jacob scoring 10 runs
