From The Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers

As we come to the end of a truly wonderful and busy half term, I want to take a moment to reflect on what an uplifting few weeks it has been here at Nower Hill. The energy, enthusiasm, and sense of community that fill our school each day continue to remind me what a special place this is.

This half term marks the beginning of a brand-new school year a time filled with fresh ambitions, aspirations, and renewed purpose It has been inspiring to see our students return eager to challenge themselves, set goals, and seize every opportunity that comes their way This edition of the newsletter is packed full of examples of those ambitions being realised. The breadth of the Nower Hill curriculum is embodied in the rich array of opportunities that our proudly diverse and inclusive community embraces, both inside and outside the classroom.

One of the standout moments this half term was the inspiring visit from Dr Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason and her son Braimah, whose warmth, insight, and musical brilliance captivated everyone present We were delighted to welcome students from schools across Harrow, along with parents and families, to share in what was a truly memorable event

We also came together to celebrate the achievements of our incredible students at Awards Evening an occasion that perfectly showcased their talent, dedication, and commitment to excellence Congratulations to every student who received an award; we are so proud of all that you have accomplished.

This edition of the newsletter is filled with stories and highlights that capture the spirit of our school our students’ hard work, creativity, and kindness shine through in everything they do Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership It is through our shared commitment that Nower Hill remains such a vibrant and inspiring place to learn.

I would also like to extend my warmest wishes to all the families in our community who have celebrated Diwali this week I wish all of our students an enriching and restful break, and we look forward to welcoming them back on November 5th, after our slightly elongated half term.

In Conversation with Kadiatu and Braimah Kanneh-Mason

A Truly Inspiring Day at Nower Hill

On Wednesday 9th October, Nower Hill High School was honoured to host an extraordinary In Conversation event with Dr Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason and her son Braimah Kanneh-Mason, two members of Britain’s most celebrated musical family. The Kanneh-Masons are renowned for their exceptional musical talent and for breaking barriers in the world of classical music, inspiring audiences around the globe.

We were delighted to welcome students and teachers from eight schools across Harrow, as well as a large number of parents and families from the wider community The hall was filled with excitement and anticipation for what proved to be an unforgettable morning of music, conversation and inspiration

Kadiatu and Braimah spoke candidly about race, inclusion, and the importance of representation in classical music and education Their warmth and honesty resonated deeply with the audience, sparking an extended and engaging question-and-answer session that allowed students and staff alike to explore the themes of the discussion in greater depth.

The feedback from visiting schools was overwhelmingly positive. Park High School wrote,

“It was a privilege for our students and staff to attend the ‘In Conversation’ talk To Be Young, Gifted and Black The message shared was deeply valuable and resonated strongly with our group The opportunity to hear directly from members of the Kanneh-Mason family about their journey, challenges, and triumphs was both enlightening and empowering ”

Another school, Rooks Heath, echoed this sentiment, saying,

“It was a real pleasure for us to be part of the event – it was truly inspirational.”

The event was also a wonderful opportunity for our own students. Over 350 Nower Hill students who study music attended a special session with Braimah KannehMason, who performed for them and worked with Zak in Year 13 in a live masterclass Zak’s courage and musicianship shone through as he performed in front of his peers and received expert guidance from Braimah an experience he will never forget

Our 60-piece school orchestra also had the privilege of performing for Braimah, who offered constructive feedback and inspiring advice on how to reach their full potential as musicians. The students left the session feeling motivated and proud, having been mentored by one of the country’s leading young violinists.

The day concluded with a book signing for Kadiatu’s powerful new work, ‘To Be Young, Gifted and Black’, with many attendees staying behind to meet her and share their appreciation. The queue stretched around the hall, a testament to how deeply the event had resonated with all who attended.

The entire day was a true celebration of music, diversity and aspiration We are so grateful to Dr Kadiatu and Braimah Kanneh-Mason for their time, generosity and inspiration, and to all the visiting schools, staff, parents and students who helped make this such a memorable and uplifting occasion

We were very proud of all of the students who spoke at the event, presented to large audiences articulately with confidence and pride.

School Council

We are delighted to have appointed 120 members of the Nower Hill School Council for 2025-26. Every half term, each Form will send 2 representatives to a School Council meeting, chaired by Mr Bremner, Deputy Headteacher, and supported by Year 11 Prefects, so that students can have their say on the key issues affecting the school

Last year, the School Council played a key role in planning Diversity and Culture Week, our End of Year Celebration Events and played a key role in the consultation on our school values.

This year the School Council will undertake more work on agreeing new school values, as well as making improvements to students’ experiences in lessons, at break and during lunch.

Mr Bremner

Black History Month

During Black History Month, all year groups took part in assemblies exploring the theme of “Standing Firm In Power and Pride.” This year’s focus marked the 60th anniversary of Malcolm X’s visit to Smethwick, highlighting his lasting legacy and the connection Nower Hill has with his daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz.

Across the curriculum, each faculty contributed a starter or plenary activity celebrating Black excellence within their subject area These engaging sessions helped students recognise the contributions and achievements of Black individuals in a wide range of fields.

You have already read that students also enjoyed a remarkable opportunity when Kadiatu and Braimah

Kanneh-Mason visited Nower Hill on Thursday 9th October. It has been an inspiring month!

Finally, a big thank you to our Diversity Committee and Sixth Form Leaders for creating a Black History Month Quiz, shared with students throughout the school a fun and educational way to celebrate the month’s themes

Together, these activities have made Black History Month a meaningful celebration of culture, excellence, and unity at Nower Hill.

‘My goal is to empower future generations through understanding the world’s diverse cultures and historic civilisations’

Harrow Music Service's Black History Month Concert

Black History Month STEM Speaker Series

As part of our Black History Month celebrations, students attended two inspiring talks that highlighted excellence, resilience, and representation within STEM

Dr Joan St John delivered an insightful session on the contributions of Black doctors throughout history, sharing stories from her new book Black Doctors Throughout History. She also spoke about her own journey into medicine and outlined the various pathways available to aspiring medical students. She spoke about the different career paths within healthcare, and how every role from doctors and nurses to lab technicians and support staff is vital in keeping a hospital running smoothly

Larissa Hope, a neuroscientist, filmmaker, and mental health advocate, led a truly uplifting talk on diversity in neuroscience She encouraged students to prioritise their wellbeing, believe in their abilities, and shared practical tips for managing emotions during challenging times. Her message that science and creativity can work hand in hand to make real change resonated deeply with our KS4 and KS5 students.

Both talks offered powerful reminders of the importance of representation and self-belief, leaving our students inspired to pursue their goals with confidence and curiosity

Black History Month STEM Speaker Series

To celebrate Black History Month, the Science department hosted a STEM poster competition. Students in year 7-8 created amazing posters that highlighted a diverse spectrum of black leaders and inventors in the STEM industry. Year 11 How to Become More Effective Learners for Life

This Tuesday, 21st October, all Year 11 students were treated to a fascinating and motivational presentation by chartered psychologist, Dr. Martijn van der Spoel. A charismatic speaker who uses his own personal struggles with dyslexia to inspire others, Dr. van der Spoel outlined which study strategies are the most effective and the small changes to work patterns that can make a big difference to outcomes

We were delighted also to be able to invite parents of students in Year 11 and the 6th Form to an evening presentation by Dr. van der Spoel. The queue of parents who wanted to stay after the main presentation to ask follow-up questions was testament to the quality of his work. We look forward to welcoming him back next term when he’ll be working with Year 10 students.

Remember that all students have 2 pages in their handbooks which outline the 6 most effective study strategies Year 11s had a 6-week registration programme of study skills this half term focused around these All other year groups will have their programme starting next half term

Year 12 Latin The Wallace Collection

In July, the Year 12 Latin students, Martha and Riya, visited the Wallace Collection, a museum in London, relating the artwork and sculpture they saw to their understanding of the 'Metamorphoses', an epic poem by the Roman writer Ovid. As part of their A-Level Latin course, the students practise translating passages from Ovid's work for an Unseen Language paper.

The Year 12s used copies of the poem in both the Latin and English to see how artists had interpreted Ovid's words into visual material and how artists had been inspired by the many stories told within the poem. The girls particularly liked a table that depicted the story of Diana and Actaeon in intricate and beautiful detail, including stag hooves as table legs to represent Actaeon's transformation from man to stag.

As well as making a great start on this unit of work in Latin, they also enjoyed using critical and analytical thinking to consider artists' intentions within their works, finding the link between Classics and Art a satisfying connection The students both thoroughly enjoyed the trip and are eager to put their translation skills into further practice this year

Harrow Collegiate 6th Form English Symposium

On 15th October some of our lucky Year 13 English A-Level students attended the second annual English Symposium at Bentley Wood School. They heard talks from some of the best and brightest of their contemporaries across the local area Nower Hill was represented with distinction by two representatives who spoke, respectively, about approaching literature through a linguistic lens and South Asian representation in film and literature

Prague Trip

In the summer term, students from the orchestra, choir, guitar ensemble, jazz band, and drumming line had the incredible opportunity to perform in the beautiful Church of St Nicholas, right in the heart of Prague’s Old Town

The church was packed full of audience members, creating a wonderful atmosphere as the students shared their music. The historic setting provided a stunning backdrop for a varied and inspiring programme, showcasing the talent and dedication of our young musicians. It was a truly memorable highlight of the music and art trip to Prague, and an experience the students will treasure for years to come.

University of Oxford’s Classics Department Poster Competition

Over the summer, Riya Parkin 6SS entered a poster making competition run by the University of Oxford's Classics department. Entrants were to make an imagined movie poster based on one of the Greek myths. Riya's entry was one of the winners in the 16-18 age category, and was truly deserving of winning.

Her clear design and colour palette highlights the violence of the story of Clytemnestra, who is vilified for killing her husband on his return from the Trojan war, for the murder of their daughter before going to Troy.

Riya's clever wording entices the prospective viewer to engage in the question of who is to blame in this famous blood feud from mythology You can see the other winning entries here, and you can hear a summary of the story of the wider myth of Agamemnon, Clytemnestra and the House of Atreus here

Mr Johnson
