Issue 31 Spring 2012

The Best in Sussex The popular Shoreham Farmers Market was voted the best in Sussex in the 2011/2012 at the Sussex Food and Drinks Awards held recently at the Amex Stadium. Shoreham was also a winner of the award in 2008/09 and has been a runner up since the formation of the Sussex Food & Drink awards in 2006.

The Farmers’ market is celebrating 10 years since the first market in July 2001 and boasts over 70 stalls selling a wide range of local produce and products and is probably the largest in Sussex. In addition it provides an opportunity as a great social gathering place where friends and acquaintances can meet and chat.

Shoreham’s award winning Farmers market has returned to East Street following a £600,000 facelift to East Street which has created a more pedestrian friendly and a continental style area for visitors to enjoy. The Farmers’ Market takes place on the second Saturday of every month in East Street Shoreham 9am t0 1pm. Southlands Community Hospital Cllr Rod Hotton, St Mary’s Ward Adur D.C. is campaigning for Southlands Hospital to become a Community Hospital serving Adur and the surrounding areas in East and West Sussex. We have an ageing population and a need for community beds, care homes are closing and beds are blocked in Acute hospitals, but Southlands could resolve much of this problem. We could supply Respite beds, Rehabilitation and Recovery beds, an Elder Day Care Centre, a Wellbeing Centre and an Immediate Care Centre (MIU). The list above is not exhaustive and he would welcome ideas for further services. He would also like to hear from anyone who has the skills needed to try to make this vision a reality and in particular, those people who have good sound business and finance skills those who have medical skills and nursing experience.

It had been hoped to utilise the Harness block as the location, but this is looking much less likely as research has shown that the building was seriously flawed when it was built. Only three Harness buildings were ever built before the design was rejected as flawed by the Dept of Health. These design flaws are still evident and other matters relating to construction and services are now coming to light, making a takeover of the block less viable an option. However there are other options and these will be explored in the coming weeks. So please do not keep your ideas to yourself. Cllr Hotton is planning to set up a charitable company operating as a Social Enterprise where any operating surpluses are invested back into the services the company offers the Community. He can be contacted by email rod.Hotton@aol. com or by phone on 01273 463994 (answer phone).
