“Carpas Lúdicas” — 11-Design crea una guardería infantil original en Yantai
Un entorno imaginativo construido con materiales económicos para niños de 6 a 12 años
Una carpa para cada niño: Un mundo personal de seguridad y pertenencia
¿Cómo puede cada niño sentir seguridad y pertenencia? En lugar de basarse en divisiones espaciales convencionales, 11-Design convirtió la “carpa” en la unidad básica del espacio. Para los diseñadores, la tienda simboliza no solo refugio, sino también libertad, exploración y diversión. Las tiendas de campaña convencionales no se ajustaban bien o aprovechaban el espacio de forma ineficiente, por lo que el equipo desarrolló un sistema de tiendas a medida —compuesto por estructuras metálicas naranjas, lona blanquecina, iluminación integrada y plataformas de madera— que creaban espacios íntimos y multifuncionales para leer y descansar.
Estructura como lenguaje: Un sistema de diseño modular y honesto Las plataformas elevadas de madera de diferentes alturas crean una disposición escalonada que permite que las tiendas se extiendan por el espacio. Este diseño no solo aborda las diferencias de nivel del suelo, sino que también introduce rutas de escalada y senderos para la exploración. Los bordes de las plataformas funcionan también como estanterías abiertas para facilitar el acceso, y al mediodía, se transforman en cómodas camas para la siesta: un gesto considerado hacia la multifuncionalidad.
Un espacio totalmente funcional con detalles cuidados
Ubicado en la tercera planta, el espacio da a una calle arbolada. La luz natural y la vegetación se filtran a través de las ventanas orientadas al oeste. Se añadieron sombras y ventilación mínimas solo donde fue necesario, preservando la belleza natural del entorno. La oficina del profesorado y la recepción se ubican cerca de la entrada, con aberturas circulares para facilitar la supervisión. Una “caja de madera” central funciona como separador y un acogedor rincón de lectura para los padres que esperan en el lugar. La cocina y el baño se integran en áreas sin ventanas, maximizando la eficiencia de la circulación.
En busca de lo infinito en lo limitado
Este proyecto es un estudio de diseño de alto impacto a bajo costo. Sin recurrir a materiales de lujo ni a una construcción compleja, 11-Design creó un espacio racional y cálido mediante un enfoque modular, materiales básicos y un alto grado de integración de sistemas. Cada elemento cumple una función clara y cada detalle refleja un compromiso cuidadoso con la idea de un espacio para niños en crecimiento. Nos encanta afrontar los retos de diseño. Aunque las soluciones a veces sean torpes o artesanales, transmiten una sensación de calidez y artesanía. Solo se necesita un poco más de paciencia.

“Playful Tents” — 11-Design Crafts a Whimsical Day Care Space for Children in Yantai An imaginative environment built with low-cost materials for children aged 6–12
How can each child feel a sense of security and belonging? Instead of relying on conventional spatial divisions, 11-Design made the “tent” the basic unit of the space. To the designers, the tent symbolizes not only shelter but also freedom, exploration, and fun. Off-the-shelf tents were either ill-fitting or inefficient in space use, so the team developed a custom tent system — made of orange metal frames, off-white canvas, integrated lighting, and timber platforms — forming intimate multifunctional spaces for reading and resting..
Elevated timber platforms of varying heights create a stepped layout, allowing the tents to cascade through the space. This design not only addresses floor level differences but also introduces climbing routes and paths for exploration. The edges of the platforms double as open bookshelves for easy access, and by midday, the platforms transform into cozy beds for siesta — a thoughtful gesture toward multi-functionality.
Located on the third floor, the space overlooks a street lined with trees. Natural light and greenery filter in through the west-facing windows. Minimal shading and ventilation were added only where necessary, preserving the raw beauty of the surroundings. The teacher’s office and reception area sit near the entrance, featuring circular openings for easy supervision. A central “wooden box” acts as both a partition and a cozy reading nook for parents waiting onsite. The kitchen and restroom are tucked into areas without windows, maximizing circulation efficiency.
This project is a study in high-impact design at low cost. Without resorting to luxury materials or complex construction, 11-Design created a space that is both rational and warm through modular thinking, basic materials, and a high degree of system integration. Every element serves a clear function, and every detail reflects thoughtful engagement with the idea of space for growing children. “We love embracing design challenges. ¿Qué es, en verdad, una ciudad alternativa? ¿Un lugar, un territorio, un trazo sobre el mapa?

Explorar una ciudad alternativa es repensar el entorno construido como un organismo vivo, donde la transformación no parte únicamente del diseño, sino del vínculo profundo entre las personas y los espacios que las rodean. Es reconocer que toda ciudad comienza a construirse en el cuerpo, la memoria y la conciencia de quienes la recorren.
Redefinir nuestra relación con ese entorno exige mirar con otros ojos: los de quienes proyectan, pero también los de quienes caminan, sueñan, cuidan y reparan. Arquitectos, urbanistas, interioristas, ingenieros, sí… pero también madres, niños, abuelas, obreros, vecinas, estudiantes, y corporaciones que despiertan a una ética del cuidado. Porque cuidar el planeta ya no puede ser una tarea exclusiva de ambientalistas o biólogos: nos corresponde a todos, en lo íntimo y lo cotidiano.
Desde esta conciencia nace una ciudad que no divide, sino entrelaza. Una ciudad capaz de integrar la innovación tecnológica, la automatización y la inteligencia artificial sin desconectarse de lo vernáculo, lo ecológico y lo ancestral. Una ciudad que reconoce el valor de las técnicas constructivas tradicionales, que dialoga con la tierra, con el adobe, con la palma, con el agua que murmura bajo el concreto. No se trata de oponer vanguardia y tradición, sino de armonizarlas en una visión urbana regenerativa, que asuma su responsabilidad con el presente sin renunciar al legado del pasado.
Una ciudad alternativa se gesta en la conjunción de muchas voluntades: profesionales del espacio, ciudadanía activa, academia comprometida y empresas con sentido ético. Entre todas ellas se tejen proyectos que no solo transforman lo visible, sino también lo invisible: los modos de habitar, de convivir, de pertenecer. Porque construir el futuro con conciencia humana es un acto del presente, nutrido por las enseñanzas de lo que fuimos.
La verdadera ciudad alternativa no es una utopía. Es una posibilidad tangible, que florece cuando los espacios se diseñan con sensibilidad, cuando las decisiones se toman con ética, y cuando el desarrollo urbano se convierte en un acto de diálogo con la naturaleza.
En ella se hallan las respuestas a los grandes retos de nuestro tiempo: la inseguridad, la contaminación, la deforestación, la gentrificación, el tráfico, la insensibilidad ambiental. Una ciudad alternativa aprende del pasado sin quedarse en él, transforma el presente sin desgastarlo y proyecta el futuro con manos regenerativas. Y entonces, como quien cultiva una semilla en terreno fértil, la ciudad deja de ser solo obra… y se convierte en vida.
What is, truly, an alternative city? A place, a territory, a line on a map? Perhaps more than a physical space, it is a way of being — and belonging — in the world. A weave of shared intentions where the art of inhabiting becomes a collective gesture, and each street, each threshold, each bench beneath a tree gains meaning not from the blueprint that contains it, but from the soul that lives within it.
To explore an alternative city is to rethink the built environment as a living organism, where transformation stems not only from design, but from the deep connection between people and the spaces they inhabit. It is to recognize that every city begins in the body, in memory, and in the awareness of those who move through it.
Redefining our relationship with this environment requires a new gaze: the eyes of those who design, but also of those who walk, dream, care for, and repair. Probablemente muchos no conocen la existencia de un exquisito queso suizo llamado Vacherin Mont-d’Or. Por eso, hoy les comparto algunos datos fascinantes sobre este manjar. Y no se me ofendan mis lectores franceses, que seguramente estarán diciendo: “¡Oye! También nosotros producimos Vacherin en Francia”. Es cierto, pero por ahora me enfocaré en el Vacherin de origen suizo; prometo dedicarle su espacio al francés en otra edición.
Primero, hablemos del precio. En 2020, según reportes de El Universal y Queso del Rebaño, su costo al público alcanzaba los 13,000 pesos mexicanos por kilo, lo que lo convierte en uno de los quesos más caros del mundo.
¿Qué lo hace tan valioso?
Para empezar, este delicioso queso tiene casi 200 años de historia. Su elaboración artesanal involucra a tres oficios distintos: carpinteros que fabrican los aros de madera de abeto rojo para su caja, maestros queseros, y una figura clave llamada “affineur” o madurador, que le da su toque final durante la maduración.
Cuenta la leyenda que la receta llegó a la región suiza de Les Charbonnières en 1871, traída por un soldado del ejército de Charles Bourbaki que participó en la guerra franco-prusiana. No obstante, existen registros que mencionan al Vacherin desde 1845, cuando se fundó la Dairy Society des Charbonnières, una cooperativa de queseros y maduradores dedicados a producir el queso más fino de la región.
Imágenes históricas del Atelier des boîtes à fromage (taller de cajas de queso) muestran a caballeros trabajando con martillos y listones de madera, dando forma a las cajas redondas que aún hoy se usan, y que aportan al queso ese sutil sabor a bosque gracias al abeto rojo, cuidadosamente seleccionado.
¿Y cómo se logra su famosa cremosidad?
El secreto está en las vacas lecheras alpinas, que pastan libremente entre flores y pastos del macizo del Jura durante meses. El auténtico Vacherin es estacional y se elabora con leche cruda de vaca entre otoño y primavera. El proceso comienza con una termalización del lácteo (un calentamiento inferior a la pasteurización pero con estrictos controles sanitarios), seguida por el cuajado, moldeado con aros de madera y prensado. Posteriormente, los quesos se sumergen en salmuera y se maduran por casi un mes en bodegas a 10 °C, donde los affineurs les dan su toque artesanal.
Al final, obtenemos un queso gourmet empacado en su característica cajita de abeto, listo para deleitar nuestros sentidos.

Many of you may not be familiar with the existence of an exquisite Swiss cheese called Vacherin Mont-d’Or. That’s why I’m here to share with you some fascinating facts about this delicacy. And to my French readers—don’t be offended! I know you’re thinking: “Hey! We make Vacherin in France too!” You’re absolutely right, but for now, I’ll focus on the Swiss version. I promise to dedicate a future article to the French one.
Let’s start with the price. In 2020, according to El Universal and Queso del Rebaño, the retail cost was 13,000 Mexican pesos per kilogram, making it one of the most expensive cheeses in the world.
To begin with, this delicious cheese has nearly 200 years of history. Its artisanal production involves three key professions: carpenters who craft the iconic spruce wood rings used for packaging, master cheesemakers, and the essential “affineurs” or maturers, who add the final touch during the aging process.
Legend has it that the recipe arrived in the Swiss region of Les Charbonnières in 1871, brought by a soldier from Charles Bourbaki’s army who had fought in the Franco-Prussian War. However, records already mention Vacherin cheese in 1845, when the Dairy Society des Charbonnières was founded as a cooperative of cheesemakers and affineurs devoted to crafting the finest cheese in the region. Historical photos of the Atelier des boîtes à fromage (cheese box workshop) show elegant gentlemen using hammers and wooden slats to build the round boxes we know today. These spruce containers don’t just serve an aesthetic function—they impart a subtle woodsy flavor that’s unique to this cheese.
So how is its famous creaminess achieved?
The secret lies in the happy Alpine cows, grazing freely on flowers and grasses in the Jura mountains for months.
Authentic Vacherin is seasonal, made from raw cow’s milk between autumn and spring. The process begins with thermalization (a gentler heat treatment than pasteurization, under strict quality controls), followed by curdling, molding with wooden rings, and pressing. The cheeses are then soaked in brine and aged for nearly a month in cool cellars at 10°C, where affineurs give them their final handcrafted touch.
The result? A luxurious, gourmet cheese wrapped in its signature spruce box—ready to be enjoyed.
Dear readers: if you ever feel like hosting a cheese lover’s evening, I highly recommend serving a Vacherin Mont-d’Or. And to do it justice, be sure to use cutlery that’s, if not gold, at least gold-plated!

Desde hace muchos años, los arrecifes han estado bajo enorme presión debido a la gran cantidad de visitantes que practican buceo y esnórquel. A pesar de los esfuerzos por limitar el acceso masivo, no ha sido posible proteger completamente estas joyas naturales.
Ante esta problemática, el maestro y visionario Ramón Bravo concibió una idea brillante: sumergir una escultura con un símbolo religioso, un lugar sagrado bajo el mar donde la gente de mar pudiera orar, reflexionar o rendir homenaje a sus seres queridos. Pensaba que, si algo respetan los hombres y mujeres del mar, son los símbolos religiosos. Tal vez —solo tal vez— ese respeto también los haría reflexionar antes de arrojar basura al océano.
Ramón decidió que esta escultura debía colocarse a unos 100 metros del arrecife, de modo que los buceadores, en su visita a la cruz, pasaran menos tiempo sobre el arrecife mismo. Con esta visión clara, se dio a la tarea de reunir a un grupo de amigos para compartir la idea.
Uno de los primeros en sumarse fue el profesor Fidel Villanueva, actual cronista de Isla Mujeres. Otro entusiasta fue Salvador Vidal, de Lorenzillo’s, quien junto con Luis Mirabentz, contribuyó activamente a darle forma al proyecto. Como en muchas de sus hazañas, Ramón Bravo desplegó su magia: en poco tiempo, muchas personas se unieron. Recuerdo a Nika, al fortachón de Crisanto, a el Chilero, a Facundo…
La cruz fue fundida en la Ciudad de México por el escultor
Enrique Miranda. Está hecha de bronce, mide casi tres metros de alto y pesa más de una tonelada. En el centro tiene la figura de un Cristo al vacío, simbolizando la Ascensión: cuando el Señor subió a los cielos. Este espacio vacío también permite que las corrientes marinas fluyan sin dañarla ni doblarla.
Finalmente, la cruz fue sumergida muy cerca del arrecife conocido como Los Manchones, el 17 de agosto de 1994.
La ceremonia coincidió con los festejos del aniversario de la bella Isla Mujeres.
Desde entonces, ha sido visitada por cientos de turistas, buzos y creyentes. Un monumento que no solo representa fe, sino también un llamado a la conciencia ecológica.
Estoy seguro de que Ramón Bravo estaría profundamente orgulloso de que uno de sus sueños siga vivo, firme y luchando por la vida marina.
En uno de los muchos eventos que rodearon este proyecto, Salvador Vidal mandó hacer camisetas con la imagen de la Cruz y una frase que lo dice todo:
“Más allá de todas las cosas está el mar.”

For many years, the coral reefs have been under immense pressure due to the large number of visitors engaging in diving and snorkeling. Despite efforts to limit mass tourism, it has been difficult to protect these natural treasures.
In light of this, the visionary Ramón Bravo came up with a brilliant idea: to submerge a religious symbol underwater—a sacred place where seafarers could come to pray, reflect, or honor their loved ones. He believed that if there was something people still respected, it was religious symbols. Perhaps—just perhaps—this could inspire them to stop throwing trash into the sea.
He also proposed placing the sculpture about 100 meters away from the reef, so that divers would spend less time directly over the corals. With a clear vision in mind, Ramón gathered a group of friends to share the idea.
One of the first to join was Professor Fidel Villanueva, now the official historian of Isla Mujeres. Another enthusiastic supporter was Salvador Vidal, of Lorenzillo’s, who along with Luis Mirabentz, helped shape the project. As in many of his ventures, Ramón Bravo worked his magic: in no time, many people came on board. I remember Nika, strongman Crisanto, El Chilero, Facundo…
The cross was cast in Mexico City by sculptor Enrique Miranda. Made of bronze, it stands nearly three meters tall and weighs over a ton. At its center is a hollow Christ figure, symbolizing the Ascension—the moment when the Lord rose to the heavens. The hollow design also allows ocean currents to pass through, reducing structural strain.
The cross was finally submerged near the reef known as Los Manchones on August 17, 1994, as part of the celebrations marking the anniversary of beautiful Isla Mujeres.
Since then, it has been visited by hundreds of tourists, divers, and believers. It’s more than a monument; it’s a call to consciousness and respect for marine life.
I’m sure Ramón Bravo would be proud to know that one of his dreams is still alive, standing tall beneath the waves, championing the cause of ocean life.
At one of the events celebrating the cross, Salvador Vidal had T-shirts made with its image and a phrase that says it all:
“Beyond all things, there is the sea.”

Para el pueblo maya, el tiempo no solo se mide, se vive. Agosto y septiembre son meses cargados de simbolismo, donde la conexión con la naturaleza, los dioses y los ciclos agrícolas se expresa a través de ceremonias ancestrales que aún hoy siguen vivas.
Una de las más significativas en Yucatán es el Ch’a Cháak, ritual para pedir lluvia. En esta ceremonia, comunidades enteras —guiadas por un jmeen o sacerdote maya— se reúnen bajo enramadas para ofrecer alimentos, atole, tamales y oraciones a Chaak, dios del agua. Los niños entonan cantos especiales para invocar la lluvia, en una muestra conmovedora de fe y tradición que busca bendecir las cosechas y mantener el equilibrio con la tierra.
En otras regiones del mundo maya, como Guatemala y Chiapas, agosto puede marcar el cierre del calendario sagrado Chol Q’ij. Es entonces cuando ocurre el Wayeb’, un periodo de cinco días “sin dueño”, dedicado a la introspección, la purificación y el descanso espiritual. Ese nuevo ciclo comienza con el Wajxaqib’ B’atz’ (8 B’atz’), el Año Nuevo Espiritual Maya, que suele celebrarse entre agosto y septiembre. Es una fecha de gran poder simbólico: representa el hilo del tiempo, la creatividad, la vida familiar y la continuidad de los pueblos. Los guías espirituales celebran con fuego, copal y rezos, pidiendo sabiduría, armonía y protección para sus comunidades.
Finalmente, el equinoccio de otoño, que ocurre alrededor del 22 de septiembre, recuerda el equilibrio entre luz y oscuridad. En sitios arqueológicos como Chichén Itzá, la luz solar crea fenómenos únicos que demuestran la precisión astronómica de esta gran civilización.
Estas ceremonias no son reliquias del pasado. Son tradiciones vivas, celebradas con orgullo, y nos invitan a reconectar con la tierra, el tiempo y lo sagrado.

For the Mayan people, time is not just measured — it is lived. August and September are months filled with symbolism, where the connection to nature, the gods, and agricultural cycles is expressed through ancestral ceremonies that remain alive to this day.
One of the most significant in Yucatán is the Ch’a Cháak, a ritual to ask for rain. In this ceremony, entire communities — led by a jmeen, or Mayan priest — gather under sacred thatched shelters to offer food, atole, tamales, and prayers to Chaak, the god of rain. Children sing traditional chants to call upon the rain, in a moving act of faith and tradition that seeks to bless the crops and restore balance with the Earth.
In other regions of the Mayan world, such as Guatemala and Chiapas, August may mark the end of the sacred Chol Q’ij calendar. This gives way to the Wayeb’, a five-day period known as the “nameless days,” dedicated to reflection, purification, and spiritual rest. No major decisions are made during this time. Ceremonial fires are lit to cleanse the energy and prepare for the new cycle.
That new cycle begins with Wajxaqib’ B’atz’ (8 B’atz’), the Mayan Spiritual New Year, usually celebrated in August or September. It is a day of great symbolic power, representing the thread of time, creativity, family, and the continuity of the people. Spiritual guides lead ceremonies with fire, copal, and prayers, asking for wisdom, harmony, and protection for their communities.
Finally, the autumn equinox, around September 22, symbolizes balance between light and darkness. At archaeological sites like Chichén Itzá, sunlight creates unique visual phenomena, reflecting the astronomical precision of this ancient civilization.
These ceremonies are not relics of the past. They are living traditions, celebrated with pride, and they invite us to reconnect with the Earth, time, and the sacred.
