Zanzibar has officially granted Bolt a licence to operate across the islands, marking the region’s first major ride-hailing deployment and a key shift in transport policy. Introduces app-based mobility options to support rising demand for safe, efficient, and tech-enabled transport—particularly during peak tourism periods, as visitor numbers continue to climb. The move is part of broader efforts by Zanzibar’s authorities to modernise urban transport and support tourism-linked economic growth. Bolt’s entry is expected to ease congestion, create new income streams for local drivers, and improve service delivery. According to the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, the islands registered over 106,000 international arrivals in July alone—a record monthly high. With nearly half a million tourists welcomed since January, the rollout of digital transport solutions is seen as critical to sustaining mobility and enhancing the visitor experience.
Air Tanzania is set to launch direct flights between Nairobi and Zanzibar, a move expected to improve regional connectivity and support growing tourism demand. The addition of this route highlights increased focus on intra-East African travel and enhanced links between key tourism markets in the region.

Government of Zanzibar, which rules the country to this day.
Bawe Island has some of excellent snorkeling spots. Around a 30-minute boat ride and slightly more expensive than the boat to Prison Island, it is much less visited. In 1870, the island was used to anchor the fist telegraph cables to Zanzibar linking it with Aden, South Africa and the Seychelles. A further line was run across to Stone Town, into the old Extelcoms building, now the Zanzibar Serena Inn. If complete isolatio and privacy is what you are aer, then Bawe Tropical Island is the perfect place to stay. There are 15 private coages scaered along the beach front, all with breathtaking panormaic views of the ocean, and all tastefully decorated in so colours to enhance the relaxed pace of life. The beach is excellent at low tide with unusual stone formatios, and there is some
good snorkelling to be had on the island’s reef.
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island is one of the most popular destintios for day trips from Stone Town. Just a short boat ride away, the island oers excellent snorkeling, a nature trail, small beach and the unusual attactio of a sanctuary for giant tortoises. Despite its name, the closest the island has come to actually being used as a prison was by its fist owner, a wealthy Arab who sent unruly slaves there for discipline. In 2006, many of the islands old buildings were restored, and Changuu Private Island Paradise was opened, oering 15 deluxe coages all on the seafront, aording maximum seclusion and privacy. There are also 12 standard rooms in the old quarantinearea, with fantasticviews back across to Stone Town. If swimming and snorkelling in the crystal blue waters gets too much, have a paddle in the freshwater swimming pool, or hit the ball around on the floolit tennis court. Mathews’ restaurant oers excellent seafood lunches, and 4 course dinners, all overlooking the restored prison ruins.
Six kilometres south of Stone Town, surrounded by pristinecoral reef, Chumbe Island Coral Park is one of the world’s most successful eco-tourism projects. In 1994 the reef surrounding Chumbe Island was named Tanzania’s fist Marine Natioal Park. The island itself, covered with lush mangrove forest, is a designated forest reserve. Visitors can come for the day to snorkel over the incredible coral reef, home to over 370 species of fish turtles and dolphins. To experience Chumbe Island properly, stay the night in one of the seven ‘ecobandas’ that nestle in the forest. Each is a two-storey, private coage constructed out of local materials and decorated with shells, driftood and colourful local fabrics. Water and energy on Chumbe are self-sustaining and provided by nature - the roofs of the bandas and the educatio centre have been designed to catch and filer rainwater, which is then heated by solar power.
The magic of Zanzibar Island is that it is a mul-faceted destintio, oering a unique blend of idyllic beaches, intriguing history, cultural diversity, tasty cuisine, exotic spices, and rich floa and fauna.

Not only is Tanzania the number one destination for safaris, its endless coral reefs in the crystalline waters of the Indian Ocean offer some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world.
The archipelago of islands off the coast of Tanzania and Zanzibar are surrounded by coral reefs and are home to an amazing array of wildlife and unique ecosystems, as well as providing shelter, sustenance and employment for local people.
From Mafia Island Marine Park, an unspoiled, uncommercialised island, where local people go about their traditional businesses in a way (as
far as one can tell) they have done for centuries, to Maziwe Island Marine Reserve, which only appears during low tide, Tanzania’s marine parks and reserves are exceptionally rich in their diversity of cultural, coral, fish, bird and plant life. In order to protect and manage these areas from over fishing, mangrove deforestation, and coral mining, the following marine parks and reserves have been established and can be visited for day trips and longer stays.
Tanzania’s Marine Parks and Reserves are exceptionally rich in their diversity of cultural, coral, fish, bird and plant life.
A group of marine wildlife reserves in Tanzania, situated off the coast of Dar es Salaam Region. The reserve system consists of Seven (7) islands of Bongoyo, Mbudya, Pangavini, Fungu Yasini, Makatobe, Sinda and Kendwa. The Dar es Salaam Marine Reserves are unique for many reasons – their proximity to the city, potential biodiversity and richness, good scenic diving and snorkelling
sites, marine birds and dolphin viewing. Occasionally hunchback whales are also spotted in the deep waters around the reserves from May to August. The islands are open to visitors during the day and have bandas (to keep you out of the sun), information boards and nature trails. Drinks and freshly cooked fish can be purchased from local community members, who also serve as tour guides and rangers.
Located 120 km south of Dar es Salaam, is surrounded by some of the richest reefs in the world, with over 50 types of corals and 400 species of fish identified so far. Mafia’s best diving is at depths less than 30m where you can see most kinds of tropical marine habitats, including exposed fringing reefs, rock walls, soft coral and algae dominated reefs. Large predatory fish and turtles are
common and mostly unaffected by approaching divers. Chole Bay, Mafia’s deep-water anchorage, is part of the protected marine park. The diving here is amongst the most spectacular in the world and includes colourful coral gardens, walls at various levels and many shelves and coral heads.
Chumbe offers some of the most pristine and colourful coral reefs in the world, with over 200 species of coral providing a sanctuary for more than 400 species of colourful fish. To protect these coral reefs, diving is not permitted in the marine park. The reef is shallow enough to see everything very clearly with a mask, snorkel and fins. There is also a coral-rag forest, which is home to the endangered Ader’s Duiker, giant Coconut Crabs, hermit crabs and a variety of bird species. Knowledgeable guides take guests on daily snorkelling and forest tours. Chumbe can be visited for day trips or longer, staying in ‘ecobungalows’ overlooking the Indian Ocean. Chumbe Island contains a lighthouse (which is still operational and was built by the British in 1904), a ruined mosque and the lighthouse keeper’s house, is now converted into a spectacular education centre and restaurant. All profits from tourism on Chumbe Island are reinvested into the conservation and education programs operating in the Park, and the island is staffed and managed by local Zanzibaris from the fishing community with voluntary support from overseas experts.
One of the oldest Marine Reserve in Tanzania which located about 15 has
over 350 fish species, 35 genera of coral and exceptional bird life. Maziwe Island was designated a reserve in the 1970s due to erosion caused from firewood collecting. The island now only emerges from the sea at low tide and is an ideal place for swimming, snorkelling, diving and sunbathing.
Mafia’s Best Diving Is At Depths
Less Than 30 M Where You Can See Most Kinds Of Tropical Marine Habitats Including Exposed Fringing Reefs, Rock Walls, Soft Coral And Algae Dominated Reefs.
In the southwest of Zanzibar Island, near Fumba to the west and Unguja Ukuu to the east, Menai Bay is a sea-turtle breeding area and also encompasses several coral reefs, an abundance of marine life and dense mangrove forests. It is also famous for its Humpback and Bottlenose Dolphins. It extends from the southwest corner of Zanzibar Island encompassing several small islands and sand banks each with its own spectacular coral reef. Traditional boats make regular trips for snorkelling on the reefs, picnics on the islands and the star attraction of swimming with dolphins and whales.
Located just west of Pemba, has some of the highest recorded coral cover, and high species diversity with 40 genera of coral and 350 fish species. The 1 square kilometer of terrestrial area supports endangered nesting turtles, and the dense coastal thickets harbour
populations of green monkeys, the endangered and endemic Pemba Flying Fox, globally endangered Coconut Crabs and various species of birds. Economically, fishing at Misali provides direct livelihood support to 11,400 people. There is a non-extraction zone that covers part of the total conservation area. Recreational activities such as diving and snorkelling, passage and scientific research are permitted within the non-extraction zone, but any type of activity that depletes the area’s natural resources is not allowed (such as fishing or shell and coral collecting).
Located in southern Tanzania, on the Mozambique border, is home to important populations of whales, dolphins, four species of turtle and numerous birds. The area is recognised as being internationally important for its biodiversity, with mangroves, sea grass beds and coral reefs inhabiting the island. There are 12 villages in the area and it is hoped that visitors to the marine park will help the local economy of this area, one of the poorest and least developed in Tanzania.
Located about 4.5 km off the northeastern tip of Zanzibar Island. The island is 1.5 km in circumference and is surrounded by spectacular coral reefs. Turtles lay and hatch their eggs all year round and there is excellent diving and snorkelling. The only human inhabitants of the island are the staff and guests staying at the exclusive, luxury lodge.
Whether you plan to dive, snorkel, kayak or take a boat ride through these Marine Parks you are sure to see some amazing sea-life!

IIf you have chosen the southern circuit for your adventure safari, then a visit to Tanzania’s fourth largest national park, Mikumi, is likely to be on your program. Four to five hours drive on comfortable roads will take you to this park which is known for hosting a wealth of Tanzania’s national animal, the giraffe.”
f you want to spend your holiday in a majestic natural area, the grand Mikumi National Park is the place to be. Established in 1964, Mikumi is the fourth largest national park in the world, enclosing an area of about 3230 square kilometers. Located south of Dar es Salaam right on the main Morogoro Iringa Highway, it is the first national park stop on the Tanzania southern circuit safari. The word Mikumi comes from a local word for Borassus palm trees referred to as Mikuky. Mikumi was the name given to the villages created by a tribal chief of Wavindunda community with the name of Mtwahela Kikuwi (pronounced mm-twahhe-laa Kee-kuu-wee).
Mikumi National Park has two
main sections divided by the main road.
The Northwest Section: is where most guests undertake their wildlife and birdlife viewing expeditions made possible by existing safari tracks. The Mkata flood plains aid the ecosystem by creating pools of water and therefore creating a sustainable environment for the plants and wildlife. The vegetations predominantly found are mixed grassland with acacia, baobab, sausage, tamarind and few small palms trees. Game driving further into the park or staying at the Foxes Tented Camp, itself lying on a hill, the majestic view of the Rubeho and Uluguru mountains can be seen, which are part of the pre-Cambrian rocks formed over 600 million years ago.
The Southeast Section: is not conducive to the safari experience because of its underdeveloped infrastructure. Guests staying at the Vuma Hills Tented Camp can experience the rugged and wilderness experience from a geological and Vegetation perspective.
Visiting Mikumi National Park during the dry season can aid a safari experience by the fact that the dried up vegetation and the brown soil creates a superb hue during sunrises and sunsets.
Wildlife and Birdlife Experience at Mikumi National Park: The wildlife viewing experience at Mikumi National Park can
be experienced right upon entering the park where guests can encounter baboons, zebras and impalas speedily crossing the road. Making a right turn after paying the park fees leads you right into the Kikoboga-Mikumi Wildlife Camp, where guests can watch the elephants in the distance splattering them with mud. Circulation around the Kisungura road circuit leads you to the hippo pool, which is best visited during the evenings when the distant setting sun and the bobbing heads of the hippos create perfect pictures. Next to the flood plain, guests might see birds such as crowned cranes, kingfishers, hornbills and storks each having a sharp eye out for anything that might

First Park on the Southern Safari Circuit: Mikumi National Park is the first stop on the southern safari circuit, allowing guests an enjoyable break with a wildlife viewing experience on route to Ruaha National Park.
• Excellent Biodiversity: Mikumi offers the opportunity to view a diverse number of animals and birds in a short period of time without too much driving around.
•
• Personalized Wildlife Watching: With relatively few numbers of people undertaking the southern safari circuit by road, Mikumi is one of the most under-visited parks in Tanzania.
• Accommodation Fairly Priced: Accommodations in Mikumi National Park cater to all personalities and budgets, making it a must-visit park for any person visiting Tanzania.
• Unique Wildlife Experience: Safari guides often state that it is easier to spot a tree-climbing lion in Mikumi National Park than to spot one in Lake Manyara National Park.
slither or move in the water or on the grassy patches. Traversing further northwest, heading to the Foxes Safari Camp, may lead you to wallowing buffalos taking advantage of Mkata flood plains small catchments or you might see the unpublicized treeclimbing lions of Mikumi National Park. Crisscrossing the safari road tracks of the Mikumi National Park can lead you to the ultimate treat of viewing the giraffes that are being debated by many naturalists to be a cross between the Maasai and reticulated giraffe because of their compromising patterns.
Game drives and guided walks are great options. Manu guests enjoy visiting the snake park in Mikumi village. Guests can also visit the nearby Udzungwa Mountains, or travel on for more wildlife safari in Selous or Ruaha.
Mikumi National Park’s dry season starts around mid-May lasting to mid-November, with patches of transition time between January and February when rains switch from the short to the long rains. Long rains start from around the middle of February tapering off by the middle of May.
A good surfaced road connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, roughly a 4 hour drive. There are also road connections to Udzungwa, Ruaha and (dry season only) Selous. Charter flights are available from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Selous and local buses run from Dar to park HQ where Tanzania Safari game drives can be arranged.
Mikumi national park lodges are located outside the park around Mikumi town and some
in the neighboring protected areas. The park has two lodges that are located inside, 3 tented camps and 3 public campsites. Like any other protected areas in Tanzania, Mikumi national park lodges are categorized in to three categories those are Luxury lodges, Mid-range lodges and Budget lodges. Its true that few lodges are located inside the park but most of them are found around the park.
Mikumi National Park’s wonderful wildlife experience, along with its perfect location on route to Ruaha National Park, makes it a must-visit during a Tanzania safari.

Hiking on the ‘rooftop of Africa’ is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone from a seasoned trekker to a reasonably fit first-time enthusiast can scale the snowy peak.
Although Mt Kilimanjaro tops the list as Africa’s most famous and highest mountain, Tanzania boasts many other mountain ranges and attractive peaks. Most of the country’s mountains and volcanoes are located in the north and east of the country. They vary from the dramatic crater of Mt Meru and the active volcano of Ol Donyo Lengai to tamer options like the Usambara Mountains and the comparatively gentle slopes of the Crater Highlands.
Hiking trips and mountain climbing in Tanzania are becoming popular options for visitors not content merely observing the country from the back of a game viewing vehicle. Instead, adventurous types are taking advantage of the many trails and peaks Tanzania has to offer.
Above the gently rolling hills and plateau of northern Tanzania rise the snowy peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro, its slopes
and glaciers shimmering above the rising clouds. Kilimanjaro is located near the rising clouds. Kilimanjaro is located near the town of Moshi and is a protected area, carefully regulated for climbers to enjoy without leaving a trace of their presence. The mountain’s ecosystems are as strikingly beautiful as they are varied and diverse. On the lowland slopes, much of the mountains farmland, with coffee, banana, cassava, and maize crops grown for subsistence and cash sale. A few larger coffee farms still exist on the lower slopes, but much of the area outside the national park has been subdivided into small plots. One inside the park, thick lowland forest covers the lower altitudes and breaks into alpine meadows once the air begins to thin. Near the peak, the landscape is harsh and barren, with rocks and ices the predominant features above a breathtaking African view.
Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is the highlight of many visitors’ experience in Tanzania. Hiking on the ‘rooftop’ of Africa is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone from a seasoned trekker to a reasonably fir first-time enthusiast can scale the snowy peak.
The dramatic crater of Mt Meru is often neglected in favor of its famous neighbor to the east, but a visit to this spectacular mountain, located within Arusha National Park, is an unforgettable experience. Its lower slopes are covered in dense highland forest,
where colobus monkeys play and buffalo graze concealed beneath the thick foliage. The extinct volcano’s extensive base gives way to a perfectly formed crater, and another internal crater with sharp, sheer cliffs. An ash cone forms subsidiary peak and the Momela lakes and Ngurdoto Crater are visible from the slopes of the Mountain.
Rising up from the floors of the Rift Valley, the Crater Highlands form a lush chain of mountains and volcanoes that includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the surrounding Maasai tribal lands. Hiking safaris take visitors from Ngorongoro Crater to the foot of Ol Donyo Lengai and offer a chance to see some of the most spectacular and stunning scenery in Tanzania. Exploring this littlevisited wilderness is the hiking adventure of a lifetime. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino return to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dewladen grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Maasai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.
Stretching from the Taita Hills of southern Kenya to the southern highlands of Tanzania, the Eastern Arc Mountain
Range has some of the oldest geological activity on the continent. Estimated to be at least 100 million years old with some formations up to 600 million years old – the relative stability of their climate means that the area hosts a surprising array of biodiversity, from plant and insect life, to spectacular bird species.
The Livingstone Mountains are a low-altitude chain that border Lake Nyasa. Remote and difficult to reach, climbing is largely uncharted and for most part the area remains unexplored by trekkers and guides.
Just a few hours drive from Arusha, the Monduli Mountains make a lovely day trip or can be part of a longer hiking itinerary. Maasai pastoralists herd their cattle along the slopes and cultural tourism programmes give visitors the opportunity to learn about traditional medicines and local Maasai culture. The surrounding views of the Rift Valley, Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro are incredible.
Remotely located on somewhat bumpy tracks 200 km southwest of Arusha, Mt Hanang’s extinct volcanic crater makes for a stunning feature above the undulating plains. The two day climb takes trekkers through numerous tribal areas, including the land of the semi-nomadic Barabaig, recognizable by their goatskin garments.
Overlooking Lake Natron and the bush land of Kenya to the north, Ol Donyo Lengai, which means ‘the home of God’ in Maasai, is an active volcano and one of Tanzania’s most spectacular and undiscovered climbs. The volcano erupts sporadically, sending streams of grey lava down the crater rim and spitting hot ash high into the air. The climb, undertaken over night so hikers can experience sunrise over the Rift Valley escarpment, is highly challenging.
Part of the Eastern Arc range in north-eastern Tanzania, the remote Pare Mountains are extremely rewarding to the avid trekker searching for hiking trails off the beaten path. Home to the Pare tribe, agriculturalists and pastoralists who have largely retained their traditional way of life, a hike through the Pare Mountains takes visitors through local villages and beautiful forests and offers the chance to see a little-visited part of the country.
Located west of Dar es Salaam, the Udzungwa Mountains rise up from the western edge of the Selous Game Reserve. Vervet monkeys play high in the forest canopy, and small forest antelope can be viewed at the right time of day. Botanical diversity is exceptional, and the park is host to a large number of endangered bird species. Views from the peaks of the mountains, towards the Selous Game Reserve and the distant Indian Ocean coast, are incredible and well worth the effort. Five distinct trails cover the forests and mountain peaks within the park, and offer varying levels of difficulty for everyone from novices to experienced trekkers. Better yet, there are no roads through the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, so hikers have the area all to themselves.
Overlooking the agricultural area around Morogoro, the Uluguru Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc range and are named after the Luguru tribe, a matrilineal group that farms on its verdant slopes. The area has some of the oldest forest in Africa, and because the ecosystem has remained undisturbed by climatic and geographical changes for an estimated 25 million years, hiking in the area is particularly rewarding. A plethora of endemic bird and insect species are found here, nut permits are required to reach most of the peaks and permission must be sought in advance.
The Usambara Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc chain in the north-eastern part of the country. Their western and eastern ranges are divided by a 4 km wide valley of small villages and farms, and larger peaks. Day walks and overnight treks take visitors through some of the most concentrated area of biodiversity in Africa. Bird watching is specially rewarding, and the views from the mountaintops stretch over the Maasai Steppe and, on a clear day, as far as the Indian Ocean.

Dar es salaam means ‘haven of peace’. The name was bestowed on the city during the time of Sultan Seyyid Majid, who chose the sleeping fishing village of Zaramo to have his summer palace, Bandur ul Salaam, the palace of peace. The village thrived and grew under the Sultan’s presence, becoming a centre of trade for ivory and slaves and transforming over time into the bustling city of Dar es salaam.
Although Dodoma, in the middle of the country, is Tanzania’s designated capital city, Dar es Salaam remains Tanzania’s social and commercial heart, as the country’s largest and richest city.It is one of the largest cities in East Africa by population, as well as a regionally important economic centre. Located on the Swahili coast, the city is one of the fastest growing cities in the world.
Over the last century, Dar es Salaam has transformed from a sleepy Zaramo fishing village into a thriving metropolis of over four million people (and growing). Straddling some of the most important sea routes in the world, it is East Africa’s second-busiest port and Tanzania’s commercial hub.
The city is a melting pot of cultural influences, Arab, Indian, German and British influences can be found in the city’s architecture. Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus and Christians coexist peacefully, with the wail of the azan blending with the sound of church bells in the mornings. Down at Kariakoo, Chinese electronics jostle with chickens in the market, cheerful Tingatinga paintings are stacked next to folded piles of khangas and kitenges, traditional
medicines sit alongside neat pyramids of fruit and vegetables as shopkeepers hawk their wares.
Visitors to Dar es Salaam are well catered for, with a choice of accommodation for all budgets, from backpacker hostels to five-star hotels. For the business traveler, there are a number of hotels boasting world-class conference facilities. There’s a mind-boggling range of restaurants offering Thai, Indian, Italian, Japanese,
Turkish Cuisine Ethiopian cuisine and more. Of course, you can also find local restaurants serving chipsi, ugali and nyama choma, freshly grilled meat.
If you are a street foodie you can try the Mishkakis (grilled beef of chicken skewers) and fried Mohogo (tapioca) dipped in spicy chili sauce sold at the street kiosks at the Oysterbay Beach located on the peninsula.
Dar has an electric live music
scene. Traditional taarab orchestras rub shoulders with dance bands playing jazz, salsa and afro funk. Rap, hiphop and bongo flava artists collaborate and perform around the city.
Tanzania’s best and most inventive musicians are showcased in May at the B-Connected Festival in Mnazi Mmoja Grounds. For film lovers, November sees Dar host the annual Euro African Film Festival.
For the art and history aficionados, the Nyumba ya Sanaa (Nyerere Cultural Centre) exhibits art and handicrafts throughout the year and gives visitors the chance to take part in
workshops on painting, batik and etching.
The National Museum and Botanical Gardens are also another diverting way to spend a day, tracing the history of Tanzania, from prehistoric fossils through to the relics of colonialism.
Beyond the museums, music and art found in the city centre, Dar has its own selection of spectacular beaches at Kunduchi, Mikadi, Mjimwema and Jangwani. At jangwani, there’s snorkeling and diving on offer, with the chance to see tuna, king fish and even white tipped reef sharks. Kunduchi is home to Kunduchi wet ‘n’ Wild, East Africa’s largest water park,
with go-karting, quad-biking, waterskiing and slides, it is ideal for a day out with the family.
Visitors could cross over to Kigamboni by a 10 minutes’ ferry ride or by a 20 minutes’through road crossing one of the beautiful bridges called “The Nyerere bridge” where they spend the morning at the Waterpark or just relax and catch a tan at the popular Mikadi Beach.
Scratch beyond the surface in Dar es Salaam and you’ll find it’s a city rich in diversity and filled with character.
