SAMBURU SOPA LODGE

Unveils Kenya’s First Safari Planetarium amid Blood Moon Sight

On the night of 7th September 2025, Samburu Sopa Lodge launched their Planetarium, a firstof-its-kind experience in Kenya’s safari, blending celestial wonder with Samburu’s wild beauty.

The evening was graced by Hon. Rebecca Miano, EGH, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, alongside Samburu County Governor, His Excellency Jonathan Lati Lelelit; Prof. Erustus Kanga (KWS); Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey (Kenya Space Agency); Allan Njoroge (KTB); Amb. Diana Kiambuthi (Ministry of Foreign Affairs); Kimani Wa Nyoike (Leo Sky Africa); and other key stakeholders from the sectors.

As the planetarium doors opened, the skies offered a rare spectacle, a total lunar eclipse, also known as the Blood Moon, perfectly aligned with planet Saturn. A cosmic coincidence that made the night unforgettable.

A planetarium is a dome-shaped building that serves as a theatre where people can learn about and experience the night sky, stars, planets and other celestial objects.

This initiative aims to diversify Kenya’s tourism beyond traditional safaris by elevating Samburu as a standout astrotourism destination. It empowers local communities by preserving indigenous knowledge and cultural storytelling. Guests will enjoy an immersive journey under Samburu’s pristine night skies, where cosmic wonders merge with rich culture and wildlife.

Southern Parks? Why The

A sense of African adventure

Tanzania is an amazing place to enjoy your Africa Safari Holiday. It does not matter whether it is your first time or if you have been there a number of times. Tanzania has a variety of game parks as well as national reserves that have an abundance of beautiful topographies, a diversity of wildlife plus world heritage sites. There are various sites that you have to see which makes it quite challenging to select which places to visit and one of them is the Southern National Park.

For those who want to get away from the crowds and experience a remote safari adventure, the southern safari circuit would sound perfect for that. The parks in this region are enormous, untouched, remote and teeming with a spectacular diversity of wildlife. The parks included in the southern safari circuit are Selous Game Reserve, Ruaha National Park, Mikumi National Park, and Selous Ex Nyee. Although the Big Five isn’t complete here and cannot be found all in one area, a lot of

other animals like roan antelopes, sable antelopes, black rhinos and cheetahs can be easily spotted. Also, this is where you can find the world’s thickest population of the last remaining African wild dogs.

Seasons

There are two key seasons in Tanzania, and each creates a different safari experience.

• The dry season, between June and October, is great for wildlife viewing, as the vegetation has dried up and wildlife gather

around the last available water sources.

• The wet season is a time of lush vegetation, calving season, and incredible birding opportunities as migratory birds return to the national parks.

The landscapes in each National Park are noticeably different, resulting in varied and unique habitats, enhancing the overall experience. The low density of cars and people make the south perfect for serious safari-goers and photographers, as you can

The Southern Parks epitomizes Tanzania in her most pristine form, off the beaten track, away from the crowds of tourists and the sound of other safari vehicles. Here you will find prolific wildlife unscathed by human interaction, where the night sky dazzles with millions of stars, and a part of the continent which is untouched by time.

take your time to watch the smaller things and absorb the scenery and behaviours. Being able to sit undisturbed makes it perfect for photographers when waiting for that perfect shot.

Why the South?

We have over 50% of Tanzania’s protected landscapes in southern and western Tanzania. Each national park has its own unique features:

• Nyerere national Park - Ex Selous: is the country’s largest national park, with the

country’s largest river running through it. It has two-thirds of the East African hunting dog population.

• Ruaha National Park: is the second-largest national park in Tanzania. It is home to 10% of the world’s lion population, and has about 530 different bird species.

Activities

There are a variety of fun and exciting activities that can make exploring Southern Tanzania even more amazing: Game Drives, River boat safaris, Hiking

in the Udzungwa Mountains, Bush walks, Hot air balloons in Ruaha National Park, Sundowners by hippo pools, Bush breakfasts and lunches, Lawn sports and horse riding in Mufindi Highlands Swimming, kayaking, snorkelling, island excursions along the Swahili Coast.

You can visit Southern Tanzania at any time of the year and still have an exceptional safari.

Africa’s Largest & Wildest National Park

Nyerere Natio

Nyerere Natio NYERERE NATIONAL PARK (SELOUS GAME RESERVE)

Only 200 km west of Dar es Salaam lies the mighty Nyerere National Park, together with Selous, one of Africa’s least known yet wildest conservation areas. A World Heritage Site, Game Reserve and the largest expanse of National Park in Africa. The Nyerere National Park, together with Selous’ ecosystem as a whole is made up of a few conservation areas, namely Mikumi in the north and the Kilombero gamecontrolled area in the west, covering in total over 90,000 sq km of pristine wilderness devoid of human influence.

A part of the Reserve’s modern-

day area was set aside as a game conservancy as far back as 1905, an area which was expanded and named (after Frederick Courtenay Selous, a 19th century hunter and soldier) in the 1920s. Repeated sleeping sickness epidemics during the 1930s and 1940s meant that the area’s human inhabitants moved out, leaving the Selous area to the animals. Today, sleeping sickness is a thing of the distant past, but the Selous is still an uninhabited, untamed slice of Africa. In 1982, the Reserve’s unique ecosystem was recognised internationally and the area designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations.

The greater part of the northern sector of Selous is earmarked for photographic tourism, and it is one of the most beautiful and game-rich areas in the whole ecosystem. Three quarters of the Reserve is woodland of various types, short grassy plains, and seasonally flooded pans. Impressive riverine forests and dense impenetrable thickets are important habitats within Selous. The wide, meandering Rufiji River is one of the largest water systems in East Africa. With its associated wetlands, lakes and swamps, it is one of the most outstanding ecological systems in the whole of East Africa.

Now the Largest National Park in Africa, Nyerere National Park is a newly established Park which is part of what is known as the Selous Game Reserve. The name of the park is given in honour of the founder of the Tanzania Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. The Park has been established in year 2019 and covers an area of over 30,893 sq km which a large area of the reserve is drained by the Rufiji River and the remaining 19,107 sq km as Selous Game Reserve.

BIRDING

The mighty Rufiji River is responsible for the huge variety of birds drawn to this area. This enormous river with its everchanging pattern of sandbanks, oxbow lakes, lagoons, islands and channels is a magnet for several rare species of birds. Pretty pink-backed pelicans are often seen here as are great white pelicans. When the water levels lower during the dry season, the fish become consecrated in this shrinking environment and waterfowl are attracted to feast on this easy prey. Egyptian Geese and Whitefaced Whistling Duck are common at these times. The White-backed Herron, an elusive the night birds are more prevalent along the river banks. Brownnecked and brown-headed parrots are also commonly seen birds.

30,893 reserve and Selous

30,893 reserve and Selous

Located in south-east Tanzania in a remote and little-visited part of the country, at an unbelievable 50,000 sq km, Nyerere National Park, together with Selous forms the combination of Park and Game Reserve. The Reserve covers more than 5% of Tanzania’s total land area, and is three times larger than the Serengeti. Although slightly off the beaten track of the more well-worn safari circuits, a visit to Nyerere National Park, together with Selous offers unforgettable game viewing in almost completely isolated surroundings.

THE WILDLIFE

Nyerere National Park, together with Selous contains about one third of all the wild dogs

(often called painted dogs) in the world. Their need to roam vast areas and their formidable hunting skills have caused many to be shot by farmers, but here in Nyerere National Park, together with Selous they have boundless woodlands and savannas in which to roam. Over 800,000 mammals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, zebras, impalas, gnus, hartebeests, waterbucks, giraffes, kudus, warthogs, grysbok, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, bush babies, baboons, Vervet monkeys and mongooses are also present. And that’s without mentioning the reserve’s specialty – an abundance of hippopotamuses and crocodiles.

Along the Rufiji River, an array of grazing antelopes, crocodiles and hippos are commonly seen as well as black and white colobus monkeys in the riverine forests. During the dry season from June to October, the concentration of animals along the river is astonishing. Linked

to the Rufii is Lake Tagalala where waterbuck, reedbuck and bushbuck gather at the water’s edge. Magnificent sickle-horned sable and curly-horned greater kudu tend to keep to the longer grass and wooded shrubby areas.

In the dry season, an ancient migration of elephants takes place between the Nyerere National Park Ex Selous and Mozambique’s Niassa Game Reserves. This is one of the largest natural trans-boundary ecosystems in Africa and at the last consensus it was estimated that 64,400 elephants roam the two parks, with 84% on the Tanzanian side. Fierce tiger fish and smooth slippery Vandu catfish are caught in the rivers. The latter is equipped with primitive lungs allowing it to cross land for short distances in an attempt to find water during the dry season.

GETTING THERE

Visitors have two choices for their mode of transportation.

ROAD

Nyerere National Park Ex Selous can be accessed on a road safari however, when traveling from Dar es Salaam, there is a direct route that covers a distance of 240 km / 149 miles following the eastern road. The drive is bumpy and long taking you 6 to 7 hours which is nearly half a day’s drive. This road takes you through Kibiti as well as Mloka and you will finally be able to access the park through Mtemere gate.

AIR CHARTER

Safari Air Link has twice daily flights in the morning and afternoon to and from various airstrips across Nyerere National Park. This schedule allows for onward connections out of Dar es Salaam and onward to southern and northern national parks across Tanzania. Flights from Dar es Salaam are 45 minutes and Rufiji River Camp is located a short distance from Mtemere airstrip.

Unique safari environment, combining the rarest of recipes – river, forest, and woodlands around the lagoons, sandbanks and lakes of the Rufiji River.

ACTIVITIES

You won’t be disappointed to have a few days safari in the Nyerere National Park, together with Selous. The conservation area allows walking and boating safaris, unlike other national parks, and guiding standards are high. Many camps will arrange fantastic fly-camping nights in the bush, bookable in advance. It also facilitates encounters with rare and endangered wild dogs, boat game viewing, fishing, hiking safaris, and bird-walking safaris in addition to standard wildlife safaris.

WHEN TO GO

Dry Season: The dry season sets in during June to November and is the best time for game viewing along the rivers. Elephants come out of the bush at that time and predators are more commonly seen.

Rainy Season: January to April is wonderful for birdlife and lush scenery but many roads become impassable after heavy rains. December to February is still good for game viewing but can be rather hot and humid. The safari lodges are usually closed from March to May.

WHERE TO STAY

There are both lodges and tented camps inside the Nyerere National Park, together with Selous. There are also several lodges and camps in and around the game but our recommendation is as follow;

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

Second Largest National Park In Africa

or anyone seeking a true African wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha National Park is essential. One of Tanzania’s wildest parks, Ruaha can only be described as a true, unspoiled, natural wilderness. Because of its distance from any major city, very few tourists visit the park each year. Yet those who do are treated to unsurpassable wilderness and complete isolation. Ruahas’ greatest secret lies in its extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds.

With its harsh and rocky landscape, no other park in Tanzania epitomises the definition of “wild Africa” quite like Ruaha National Park. After the annexation of two other major conservation areas, Ruaha is now the largest national park in Tanzania, covering a vast area of 23,000 square kilometres (substantially larger than Wales!). While few are familiar with the park, national park connoisseurs recognize it as one of the most spectacular in Africa.

The vast majority of the park above the escarpment termed “Miombo Woodland ‘’ is rarely visited by tourists, as it is relatively difficult to reach and known for challenging game viewing and an abundance of tse-tse flies. The scenery in Miombo is quite dramatic, with tall Brachystegia trees forming continuous woodland housing for some specialist species of antelope, such as the magnificent sable, as well as several miombospecializing birds.

The low-altitude Ruaha Valley is the more developed section of the park, which covers little more than a third of the park’s total size. The Ruaha Valley has a decent road network for game viewing and a variety of vegetation types, thus offering a diverse game drive experience without

The Great Ruaha River, which is known as the park’s lifeline, attracts big herds of animals of all

through the Ruaha Valley. Some of Ruahas’ best features are found in the valley, from massive rocky hills and outcrops to dense, impenetrable bush and open grasslands in the east. The most striking features are numerous serpentine dry “sand rivers”, which crisscross the park and are lined with dense vegetation,

BIRDING IN RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

For birdwatchers, Ruaha’s birdlife is sure to please. There are a recorded 530 different species of birds in the park, including giant herons, saddle-billed storks, white-headed plovers and white-backed night herons. There are six species of both vultures and hornbills, and raptors abound. The crested barbet, an attractive yellowand-black bird whose persistent trilling is a characteristic sound of the southern bush, can also be found in Ruaha alongside central Tanzanian endemics such as the yellow-collared lovebird and ashy starling. The park’s birds make their home among the branches of Ruaha’s 1600 species of trees,

which is twice as many as the number of species in the great Selous Game Reserve, although Ruaha is only half the size of Selous.

WILDLIFE IN RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

Only the wildlife at Ruaha National Park: wild and beautiful. The park holds an incredible array of animals. Among Tanzanian parks, Ruaha possesses one of the highest species counts of large mammals. The park holds an estimated 20,000 elephants alone, and it is not uncommon in the dry season to see well over 100 elephants in a single drive. Hippos rule the river, and vast quantities of these animals can also be seen sunning themselves along the stunning river

where many animals take refuge.

sandbanks in the early morning. Massive herds of buffalo, with up to 500 animals plus seen in a single herd, coexist alongside giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, crocodiles, lions and leopards.

Ruaha is also home to some very rare creatures. Sable antelope can occasionally be found in the Miombo areas as well as in the springs in the western part of the park. Roan antelope are also sometimes seen in the eastern area of the park. Lesser kudus and grant’s gazelle are intermittently spotted at the southernmost point of their geographical range. Dik-diks abound all over the park, and rarely does a drive return without having glimpsed the noble greater kudu. Ruaha is also home to the second largest population of wild dog in Africa. As the majority of the park’s wild dogs live in the inaccessible wilderness areas of the north, only a few lucky visitors spot them.

WHY VISIT RUAHA NATIONAL PARK?

• Untouched,Pristine

Nature: Ruaha is one of the less frequented national parks in Tanzania, which means that the park’s wildlife

has hardly been altered by human intervention.

• Personalized Wildlife

Watching: Because Ruaha is expanding in size yearly, the chances of bumping into other vehicles that can startle an animal you may be already watching are limited.

• Lots to Discover: In areas where park authorities have formal tracks, there are no access restrictions, which allows visitors a great deal of freedom to explore undiscovered territory. Currently, Tanzanian park authorities are adding more routes while carefully monitoring the ecological impact, thus ascertaining that the wildlife remains as undisturbed as possible. There are plans to add up to 1500 kilometers of road networks.

• Go by Foot: Ruaha is one of the few national parks in Tanzania where walking safari is permitted when accompanied by an armed ranger. This liberty gives nature enthusiasts an opportunity to receive an up-close and personal experience with wildlife in dense places where safari

vehicles cannot penetrate.

GETTING TO RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

There are two ways guests can reach Ruaha National Park. One is by road, through Iringa from Dar es Salaam via Mikumi, or from Arusha via Dodoma. Ruaha is also accessible by plane.

available from Dar es Salaam, Selous, Serengeti, Arusha, Iringa and Mbeya through Safari Air Link, Flight Link and Coastal Aviation.

WHEN TO GO

To see predators and large mammals, dry season (mid-May to December); to see birds, lush

season (January to April). The male greater kudu is most visible in June, which is the breeding season.

For the more discerning safari lover who is looking for an ‘off the beaten track’ pure wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha to view its large beasts, stunning vistas, numerous baobabs and unique birds and animals must not be missed!

Ruaha River Lodge

Ruaha River Lodge

Discover why Ruaha is Tanzania’s best-kept secret with Foxes Safari Camps

Nestled along the banks of the Great Ruaha River in Ruaha National Park, Ruaha River Lodge offers guests private riverside cottages designed to blend naturally with the surrounding landscape.

This is where it all started for the Foxes Safari Camps in January 1982, when Ruaha River Lodge became the first in the Fox Family’s portfolio of properties –and indeed the first property in the national park. Together with

their team of guides, they will ensure that you enjoy your stay at the Ruaha River Lodge.

Nature Experience Game drives are the predominant activity in Ruaha National Park

The park has a vast network of allweather roads, so large tracts of the park are accessible to visitors. Not only does this increase the chance of seeing more animals, it also disperses the vehicles more evenly around the park so that you will not meet many other vehicles on your safari. The highly trained, English-speaking guides will lead you to an abundance of wildlife sightings, which could include leopard, lion, cheetah and African wild dogs, not to mention several rare species including greater and lesser kudu, roan and sable antelopes. Specialist guides have built up extensive local knowledge whilst living and working in the park.

This ensures you don’t miss out on the flora and fauna that normally go unnoticed by the untrained eye.

For a more intimate experience, guided game walks are offered

during the dry season (May to November). Ruaha River Lodge also offers fly-camping excursions, which allow you to spend two nights camping in the wilderness. To take advantage of this special opportunity, prebooking is required.

Accommodation

The 24 individual stone and thatch rooms situated along the Ruaha River have minimal impact on the environment and allow guests to view widlife directly from their verandas. The lodge’s dining and bar areas also overlook the Great Ruaha River, which provides for uninterrupted game viewing while you eat and

Ruaha River Lodge
true Safari experience.

Ruaha River Lodge was the first camp built in the area, and was erected in one of the most spectacular locations imaginable. The lodge’s remote location offers a variety of landscapes - from mountains and escarpments to grassland plains. The lodge extends along the rocky shores of the Great Ruaha River, affording views up and down its banks. Game animals are drawn to the river from the neighbouring hills, and guests can see great wildlife dramas unfold from the comfort and protection of their self-contained natural stone and thatch ‘cottage’.

drink. Single, double, and triple cottages are available. Extra beds can be added on request. All rooms have a lounge area with sofa and armchair, coffee table, and writing desk. Rooms also have mosquito-proof doors and windows, though bug spray is also provided. The rooms have 24V UK-style three-pin sockets, and Hurricane lamps are

provided at dusk. Complimentary laundry service is also available.

Culinary & Dining Experience

Food is prepared using fresh produce from the Fox family’s Highland farm. A full English breakfast is complimented by freshly baked cinnamon bread, fresh fruit, tea and coffee. Lunch is a cold buffet with a selection of meats, pastries, pizzas and salads, followed by dessert. Dinner is a three-course meal with a vegetarian option. Special diets can be catered for with prior notification. Drinks are served around a campfire on the riverbank or high up in the elevated bar with its spectacular views up and down the river.

Getting there

Safari Air Link operates daily flights to Ruaha from Dar and Zanzibar. These flights also connect with Selous, Mikumi and the Southern Highlands, and connect through to Katavi and Mahale. By road, Ruaha is a 2-hour drive from Iringa Town. Road transfers from Iringa can be arranged with your booking.

Best Time to Visit

Park can be visited at any time of year. However, the best time for game viewing is during the dry season from June until December, when wildlife converges on the dwindling water reserves and concentrates along the great Ruaha River, which is the park’s only permanent water source. During the ‘rains’ from late December until April, the trees sprout green leaves and the Ruaha River swells into a bursting torrent. The rainy season is the best time for bird-watching, as the population of birds swells with both the northern and southern migratory species visiting Ruaha.

Arusha Hosts Global Tourism Summit

Unlocking New Horizons for Travel Industry

The recently concluded Global Travel and Local Tourism Industry Players Summit that took place on 2nd October 2025 at Gran Melia Arusha has left a lasting impression on stakeholders worldwide, signaling a bold step forward for cross-border tourism partnerships.

Held in Arusha, a city often considered the heart of Africa’s tourismscene—the summit brought together industry leaders from across the globe. The gathering served as a vibrant platform for highlevel networking, business deals, and collaboration between international travel agents and local tour operators.

Among those who benefited was Mr. Eric Joshua, Co-Partner at Msangai Tours, who hailed the event as transformative for his business.

“We’ve secured partnerships with international travel agents who will now bring tourists directly to us,” he said. “This kind of global exposure would have been hard to achieve without the summit. We’re

truly grateful to Africa Booking.com for making it possible.”

His experience echoed the views of many local operators who found the summit’s Business-toBusiness (B2B) sessions particularly fruitful. Mr. Joshua emphasized the importance of making such events regular, especially for small and medium-sized tour operators working with limited marketing budgets but looking to expand internationally.

The summit was organized

by Africa Booking Match Ltd, pan African Platform for safari business matchmaking in collaboration with the local safari value and supply chain stakeholders. It coincided with World Tourism Day and featured a major indoor travel exhibition that attracted nearly 300 stakeholders from within and across continents.

The event’s dynamic atmosphere encouraged the formation of new partnerships and the exchange of fresh ideas for sustainable tourism growth.

Bluehaven Mikadi is also an investment with vision. Coastal properties in Tanzania are in high demand, and as the city grows, beachfront availability remains limited. Owning a piece of Mikadi is securing not just a home, but a long-term asset with enduring value.

The lifestyle extends beyond your front door. Landscaped gardens, leisure areas, and future amenities are designed to create a community where every detail enhances your day-

to-day life. Morning walks along the shore, afternoons by the ocean, and evenings with panoramic views — this is coastal living at its finest.

For families, professionals, and investors alike, Bluehaven Mikadi represents more than property ownership. It is about becoming part of a landmark development that will define beachfront living in Tanzania for generations to come.

With limited residences available, the opportunity is both rare and timesensitive. As Dar es Salaam continues its rapid growth, Bluehaven Mikadi stands as

a bold statement, a fusion of lifestyle, legacy, and investment potential.

Bluehaven Mikadi Beach — where luxury meets the ocean, and life meets possibility.
