There is nothing as amazing as spending some time on a beautiful beach during a holiday or weekend break. Tanzania is a beautiful country blessed with an abundance of scenic beaches that sees locals and tourists thronging to. Dar Es Salaam’s beaches are often overshadowed by those of its offshore neighbour, Zanzibar, but prepare to be amazed. The white, fine sand beaches of Dar Es Salaam will take your breath away.
Also known as Oyster Bay Beach, featuring a lively atmosphere, Coco beach presents a perfect avenue for everyone to enjoy the ocean. Idyllic with stretches of almost clean sand, the popular beach on the east side of the Msasani peninsula is a favourite for both tourists and locals. It’s the first place most locals think
of when it comes to beach relaxation and unwinding; it’s usually overcrowded during public holidays. The beach features a wide range of restaurants, bars, food stalls and outdoor entertainment.
The south beach is also referred to as “Kingamboni” and it’s the standout choice of the many beaches in the city. It has a picture-perfect setting with powdery sand, pristine waters, and waves that are ideal for swimming. It is located off Kigamboni Road on the south coast of the city. If you are looking for the best of regular live music, the south beach provides a perfect option. Cold beer, sodas, cocktails and Delicious foods are served in the different food stalls on the beach.
Mbudya Island beach is one of the most untouched beaches in Tanzania. While the island is no secret to locals, many tourists have no idea that it exists. You can get to the island by taking a 25-minute ferry ride from White Sands Beach Resort. You can also take a 10-minute boat ride from
Msasani Slipway to the island. You can hole up on this piece of paradise and enjoy its seclusion and solitude. The island has no hotel or restaurant but you can enjoy some delicious grilled seafood freshly caught from the sea with a beer or soda in a banda.
BONGOYO
This leisure island is a marine conservation area and it features beautiful beaches and a range of fun activities including snorkelling and swimming. You can get here by taking a boat from the Slipway shopping centre on the peninsula. The island is uninhabited so you can only spend a day here and go back to the city. When you get here, you can rent a banda –the little huts on the beach, relax and order your lunch. The beach combines a spectacular outlook, exceptional snorkelling conditions and walking opportunities along the stretches of the coastline.
KUNDUCHI BEACH
“Remarkable”, “postcardperfect”, “speechless” are some of the words used to describe Kunduchi Beach by tourists when
they step on its shores. The white sandy beach sits on the lap of the gorgeous Indian Ocean and it’s perfect for an ultimate getaway. If you feel like lazing around, sink into the soft sand and let in the breath-taking sunshine.
BAHARI BEACH
Bahari beach situated at the North of Dar es Salaam is a perfect private paradise with plenty of space, consistent waves and a soothing atmosphere that makes for a great relaxing spot throughout the year. A very quiet and calm place, Bahari is perfect to relax, read a book, see some local life, swim in the ocean and drink a few cocktails at the local beach bar. Popular activities to do in Bahari includes kitesurfing and a range of water sports. From this long beach with white sand, you get to order some fresh seafood from the fishing village located at the one end.
AMANI BEACH
Even though the beaches on the mainland coast are often neglected, Amani Beach is different. Both locals and expatriates flock to this beach for a relaxing weekend getaway. The beach is a perfect combination
of beautiful coastal landscapes and leisure activities off and on the water such as mountain biking, horse-riding, swimming, and surfing. Make some holiday memories at this beautiful stretch of extensive white beach.
Clear blue water and a clean beach with nice sunbathing beds/ chairs are what characterises this white sandy beach. From white sands, there is an opportunity to travel to some small islands by boat. This pristine beach is a perfect place to enjoy the ocean, sun, play volleyball and eat good food. Situated in White Sands Hotel in the north of Dar es Salaam, the beach features a nice bar next to the pool and restaurant with a beautiful ocean view.
The name “Mikadi” originates from the Mikadi tree that thrives along the beautiful coastline of Tanzania. This is the kind of beach anyone would love to spend a relaxing weekend. The beach facilities come with a beautiful swimming pool, a bar restaurant and food stalls for the best of homemade burgers. The beach has secured its place among the best beaches in the
city for its mix of relaxing and fun experiences.
With the tropical turquoise water of the Indian Ocean, the Kipepeo beach amazes and entices everyone at all times. Located about 9 km from the city centre on the south coast, the sun-kissed beach is a year-round choice for those looking for some beach fun and adventures. We love it like that! Break away from the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a few minutes on this beach and you’ll feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Thanks to its peaceful atmosphere that works magic on people’s stress levels.
Mbezi Beach is located about 20 km north of the city centre, along Bagamoyo Road. The pristine beach is an untouched paradise, an idyllic coastal playground, and a great diving location. Mbezi beach is in close proximity to Karibu art gallery, some shops, an international school and some luxurious accommodation. “Tanzania is a beautiful country. Its landscape and people make it a unique location to undertake any sport. Whether it is early morning training runs past giraffes and zebra to the shores of Lake Manyara or on the slopes on Mount Kilimanjaro, a football match against a local village team, horse riding expeditions in West Kilimanjaro or treks in the Ngorongoro Highlands or from the sun-kissed islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago to the gentle shores of Lake Victoria, the country contains immense cultural and natural wealth. As you can imagine, being on the tropical Indian ocean, and having Africa’s largest lakes, Tanzania has also a plenty of water sports, ranging from some of the world’s best diving (both in the ocean and freshwater lakes), yacht, dhow and boat trips, fishing, and adrenaline sports. Tanzania has some incredible sporting journeys to offer those who seek them out.”
Flights by balloon take off as dawn breaks over the Serengeti, the perfect silence of the early morning plains broken only by the soft roar of the balloon.
Far below, wildebeest scatter, looking everywhere but up at the silent visitor that floats over their world. Giraffe stand next to acacia trees, untroubled by the airborne visitors. After the thrill of
landing, a champagne breakfast awaits, the air becoming warmer as the sun climbs in the sky and curious zebra look up from their grazing at the chink of cutlery in the still, warm bush.
Scuba diving the coral reefs off Tanzania’s coast at Zanzibar and Mafia Island offer some of the world’s finest scuba diving. Diving is possible all year round, although the Kusi Monsoon (strongest June-Sept) is accompanied by choppy seas and strong currents that make the more exposed reefs inaccessible. There can also be strong winds in December and January. Visibility is best from November to march, before the long rains set in.
The water around Zanzibar and Pemba islands is considered by
experts to offer some of the best fishing in the world, especially the Pemba Channel, between Zanzibar and Pemba islands, or around Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar. Big game fish include barracuda, kingfish, sailfish, billfish, wahoo, Dorado and blue marlin.
Rivers are stocked with trout around Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. Large rivers such as the Kilombero and Great Ruaha offer fabulous sport fishing for Tiger fish. On the great lakes, especially Lake Victoria, one can fish for large Nile Perch.
There are some fabulous areas to paraglide. Very few people paraglide in Tanzania, therefore it is a novelty. Always seek permission from the local village, explain what you are doing and where you think you will land (it is illegal to fly over national parks). Just some of the areas to fly are the Usambara, the Rift valley and numerous hills around Mt. Meru. Microlight flights are now also available over Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley.

Two kilometres off the shore of mainland Tanzania is an idyllic private island. With turquoise waters, and white sandy beaches, this coral surrounded island is always isolated from land, maintaining its exclusivity to guests of Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge. Although remote and nestled away behind mangrove islands, Lazy Lagoon is easy to visit by those residing in Dar es Salaam. The discovery of this paradise requires only a short drive to the boat pick up location just south of Bagamoyo, and a 15-minute ferry across the beautiful lagoon to Lazy Lagoon Island.
Once on the island, guests can enjoy nine kilometres of private island wonders, sharing with only a small number of rooms. Spend your days exploring the area with long walks along the white beaches, strolls through the mangrove forest and investigate the rock pools filled with colourful sea creatures. Being a small island, lazy
Lagoon is quite unique by offering sea swimming at all tides, unlike much of East Africa. The coral reef surrounding and protecting the island offers a great opportunity for snorkelling, and the artificial jetty attracts schools of brightly coloured fish, creating an aquarium like experience.
The island contains an interesting ecosystem, with many small mammals such as bush babies, suni antelope, vervet monkeys and bush pig, along with birds and butterflies. Low tide washes up a plethora or exotically coloured starfish, seas urchins and crabs. All of these share their habitats with the natural mangrove forest.
Following the decline of the nearby Kaole settlement, Bagamoyo grew out of the slave and ivory trade. It was also referred to as the “gateway to the dark continent” by explorers including Livingstone, Burton, Speke, Stanley, Grant and others who used Bagamoyo to launch their expeditions to find the source of the Nile.
Lazy Lagoon features 12 en suite natural makuti beach bandas, each bandas are built and furnished using local businesses, and resources. Each banda is situated along the beach, enjoying uninterrupted views of the ocean. From the sundowner lounge above the bar, guests can watch the stunning sunrise over Zanzibar and set over the palm trees of Bagamoyo.
Later, Bagamoyo became the capital of German East Africa. At Lazy Lagoon, guests have the chance to embark on a day excursion to Bagamoyo with a guide, learning about its detailed and prominent history, similar to that of Stone Town.
One can feel the Swahili atmosphere as they follow the flotilla of local fishing boats tacking around the island to get from their villages to the fishing grounds beyond.
Days are often structured around the delicious meals provided, making use of fresh local produce and fish straight
Lazy Lagoon allows you to get away from it all and relax, whether sunbathing with a cocktail in hand, or partaking in some of the activities available. Being a lagoon, guests can enjoy more tame waters compared to the open ocean, allowing for sea kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, swimming, and snorkelling. At low tide, there are many interesting uninhabited sand banks and mangrove forests to explore, accessible by paddle board and kayak.
from the ocean. The friendly waiters are always around to help and keep your glasses filled, doing everything they can to help you settle into the island life. At night the most spectacular stargazing commences, looking out for the shooting stars and identifying constellations, made even more defined after the generator is turned off.
This island lodge truly provides an ‘off the beaten track’ experience, where visitors can not only rest and unwind away from hordes of people, but also get to know and explore the real Swahili Coast.

Tanzania a country by the great Indian Ocean, and the largest lake in Africa, the country prides in a number of water sport activities among which are some of the finest diving spots in the world on freshwater-lakes and the ocean, boat trips, yacht trips, among others.”
The waters of Tanzania are blessed with a variety of reefs plus tropical fish that can best be viewed by diving off the Tanzanian mainland. In addition you can enjoy diving trips to any of the islands of Tanzania such as Mafia, Zanzibar and Pemba which are located just off the country’s shoreline. If you are planning to visit Tanzania, Below are some of the best water adventures you can enjoy while in Tanzania.
Kitesurfing has become the hottest and most popular up-and-coming activity in Zanzibar. Kitesurfing centres are popping up all along the east coast of the island, providing adrenaline seeking visitors with the chance to undertake lessons and get out on the waves while on holiday.
Canoeing trips are available in the Arusha National Park and are a wonderful experience, drifting past

The soft chug of an outboard engine, or the whispering flap of a canvas sail; the so-called ‘blue safaris’ in Tanzania are a tranquil and relaxing way to watch wildlife, enjoy snorkelling, or simply admire the beautiful scenery of the water’s edge. This is one of the best ways to see the Selous Game Reserve, up the huge muddy brown sweep of the Rufiji River, spotting hundreds of resident hippos and crocodiles. The water around Zanzibar and Pemba islands is considered by experts to offer some of the best fishing in the world, especially the Pemba Channel, between Zanzibar and Pemba, and around Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar. Rivers are stocked with trout around Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. Large rivers such as the Kilombero and Great Ruaha offer fabulous sport fishing for Tiger Fish, and large Nile Perch can be caught in the great lakes.
When Sultans ruled and the monsoon winds carried trade across the Indian Ocean, the vessel used was the Dhow, with its characteristic lateen sail made with merikani cloth. So step back in time, and sail
