T

hese milder temperatures usher in my favorite time of the year at DAC, the best season of all. Springtime golf…do two finer words exist?

Our property is starting to turn green, and soon the flowers will bloom. Multiple projects are underway (with more to come this year), and we appreciate your patience as we continue our shared pursuit of providing “A Premier Country Club Experience”.

As I write this newsletter, the conclusion of my term as President of Dallas Athletic Club nears. It has been a true honor to serve this organization over the past six years. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for this tremendous privilege. Specifically, I thank our Board of Directors for their support, commitment of time, and expertise in guiding DAC in a strategic direction. My hat is tipped to the professional DAC staff and their aim for excellence. I want to thank each of you, our members, for your support and unwavering commitment to DAC and our staff.

Last and certainly not least, I thank Sandy Kaufman, Phil Jones, and Michael Childers as they rotate off the Board of Directors. These remarkable gentlemen have served our Club faithfully in numerous capacities with first-class

professionalism and excellence. As you see them around the Club, please extend your appreciation for their service.

As spring and summer advance, please read our e-blasts, website, newsletters, and the new DAC App in order to remain up to speed on exciting events planned for your pleasure.

A final and important note, please join us at the Annual Meeting of the Membership on March 14, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. We will provide an administrative report of countless significant accomplishments during the past year, as well as announce our Board of Directors election results. TURF TALK - COURSE CONDITIONS Last September we attempted to hide the lip liner by pushing sand up on the faces to allow grass to grow over the liner. The lip liner is part of the integrity of the bunker system. It prevents soil from entering the bunker causing contamination to the sand. The change negatively affected the playability of the bunkers. The crews have reworked each bunker and the sand is now back to the original specification when the bunkers were installed.. We will continue to try and promote grass to grow over the lip liner, but we will not sacrifice playability in the process.

We have installed tree lighting along the entrance to the Club. The lighting is the final phase of our new entrance project. The renovation of the back of the building has started and the concrete from the parking lot to the large putting

green (including the cart staging area) will be replaced in February. Please be patient with the inconvenience of this project, we will work to manage the flow of traffic during this project.

Lastly we continue to work on the plans for course improvements coming this summer. The improvements will include a redo of the driving range and practice greens by #13 gold, tee leveling, the addition of some new tees, the replacement of bridges on 14 and 16 blue, removal of Bermuda grass encroachment into the greens, leveling of several fairways, reshaping creek and lake banks, and replacement of some cart paths that are broken. We will be adding updates to the course update page on our website.

Men’s Golf

The DAC Hickory Corner submitted by Jim Conine Earlier this month a new regional Hickory event was kicked off, The Houston Hickory Team Challenge.

The event was hosted at High Meadow Ranch and had a field of Hickory enthusiasts of 24 from all over Texas, and even one from Kentucky.

The tournament was a 2 Day event of 6 holes each of Scramble/Shamble/Best Ball each day.

Under very challenging wet weather conditions, 1st Place was taken by DAC’s Jim Conine and Mike Gibson who shot a 71-71 (142) to win by 4 strokes.

Upcoming Hickory Events There will be a meeting on the DAC Hickory Championship. A late, but anticipated wrap up to 2017. This will be held in the coming weeks, as weather allows.

The largest Hickory Event in Texas, The annual Onion Creek Classic in Austin, March 22-24th. 6-10 players from DAC are expected to make up the field of close to 100 from all over the US as well as Canada.

connor adams submitted By Dave Miller Connor Adams has played in three high school tournaments and has won low individual medalist honor in two of the tournaments. He most recently won at the Cowboys Club shooting 74 in a tournament with over 100 participants. He plays as a freshman member on the Dallas Christian high school team. He recently shot a final day 68 at Barton Creek in a 3-day collegiate prep tournament finishing in third place in a field of 82 players.

Stop the Scooping How to Chip it more consistent with some simple tweaks!

The two main chipping problems I see with my students are trying to scoop the ball into the air and making too long a backswing. It’s a good bet that neither will lead to a decent shot.

Several factors are involved in scooping, but it often can be traced to excessive wrist action. To eliminate active wrists, just firm them up.

Without putting a death grip on the club, lock your wrists in their address angles so they don’t break down through impact.

Another reason a student will get excessive wrist motion in their chip shots is if their shaft angle at address is too flat. When the hands get low you have already introduced lots of wrist angle and it will be hard to manage.

For a standard chip get the shaft a little more vertical than you normally would.

Playing the ball too far forward and setting too much weight on the back foot also contributes to scooping. For a basic chip I like to see my students play the ball back in their stance on standard chips, with most of the weight on their left side. That helps promote a descending blow. Then all you have to do is trust the club’s loft to get the ball in the air and carry it the right distance.

As for the backswing, keep it short, unless you’re blessed with the touch of Freddie Couples or John Daly. When your swing is too long, the tendency is to decelerate the club and lose your spine angle. So, keep the swing compact back and through. You’ll hit crisp chips with great distance control.

There are lots of tweaks to chipping based on the shot you are about to hit but this basic starting point will

FITNESS SCHEDULE Strength Training vs.

Flexibility For years, fitness experts have struggled to explain the need for strength training as a means to increase flexibility. In my younger years, our basketball coach would tell us football players that we needed a couple of weeks to stretch our muscles out before we were prepared to play basketball. In reality, we needed a couple of weeks to get used to nonstop movement of basketball versus the interval type movement of football. From a strength and flexibility perspective, we were all very strong and flexible from our resistance training. My how times have changed.

Just turn on an NBA game and you can see the impact resistance training has had on basketball players. They

are lean, muscular, fast and extremely flexible.

The same type of training applies to normal everyday people like you and me.

Resistance training provides extreme increases in flexibility as well as functionality and fat loss.

Every individual should have a minimum of 60 minutes of resistance training per week.

Unfortunately, most people don’t know where to start.

That’s where the professional trainers at DAC can help.

Our trainers will design members a customized workout program including bio-mechanically correct resistance training.

Limited to 12 men and 12 women.

This is a one afternoon pro am format tournament. We will have a partner draw while the competitors enjoy lunch. After the food settles, players will compete in a round robin tiebreaker format.

After all matches, we will hand out awards and enjoy a great DAC burger cookout. Cost for this event is $175.00.

Probably the best weekend at the Tennis Shop all year! Starts with a great party on Friday night. Members competing in the tournament will draw their pro partner for the weekend and then the fun really begins. Matches are all day Saturday and Sunday.

This is a great event to either be a competitor, or just watch, but it is a must if you are a DAC member. Some amazing pros will be available to pair up with our members!
