Dear Fellow Members,
As you read this, the General Manager Search Committee is fully engaged in the important task of selecting the next General Manager of the Dallas Athletic Club. We are nearing the final stages of a comprehensive, nationwide search led by the executive search firm Kopplin Kuebler & Wallace. This process has been both thorough and thoughtful, as we look to identify a leader who will build on the legacy left by the late Brent Burkhart—our Club’s first and only General Manager.
Brent’s legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of our Club. His dedication to our employees, his commitment to excellence, and his pride in the Dallas Athletic Club helped shape the exceptional member experience we enjoy today. We honor his contributions as we look forward to the next chapter of our journey.
Our Club is well-positioned for a bright future, and the Search Committee is committed to hiring an outstanding leader—someone who will not only meet but exceed the expectations of our members and staff. We are seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking individual to serve as the face of our Club, and who will drive the implementation of our Strategic Plan. Key areas of focus include culture, technology, safety & security, service excellence, and transparent, consistent communication.
This month, it is my pleasure to welcome Bernie Garces, who joins the DAC team as our new Director of Fitness. Bernie brings a wealth of experience in private training and golf-specific fitness, and we are thrilled to have him as part of our team. I encourage you to stop by the Fitness Center, introduce yourself, and welcome Bernie to DAC.
Last, I would like to recognize the DAC management team and staff, who have gone above and beyond during this time of transition. Their dedication to maintaining the highest levels of service and project execution has been truly commendable. A special thank you goes to Superintendent Travis Moore and our incredible grounds team for the recent completion of the Blue Course. The transformation is remarkable and will serve our Club and its members well for many years to come.
The Board of Directors remains steadfast in its commitment to responsible stewardship of the Dallas Athletic Club. At the heart of every decision we make is the member experience. It is a privilege to serve you, and we invite you to reach out to any member of the Board with your thoughts or questions.
Thank you for being an integral part of our extraordinary Dallas Athletic Club community.
See you at the Club

Our DAC Experience Would Not be Complete without our Friends
When JJ Black first became a member five years ago, it was all about the golf—two great courses, top-tier practice facilities, and a competitive group of players that made finding a game easy. But over time, he and his wife Anne Claire have discovered so much more.
Mr. Black – You’ve been a member for five years now — what initially drew you to join DAC?
It is crazy how time flies! While I do enjoy the non-golf activities that DAC has to offer, my initial draw was 100% golf focused. The location of the Club, having two golf courses with great practice facilities, and a competitive playing membership where you can always find a game were what did it for me.
Mrs. Black – What were your first impressions of DAC, and how has your connection to the Club grown over the years?
I liked that DAC is still a traditional club, but with a warm laid back welcoming feel. I have recently come out of my golf retirement from my high school days to play in the Couples Golf Association events which have been a blast!
As someone who loves golf, what’s your favorite memory out on the course — whether it was a perfect shot, a great group, or just a fun moment?
Making a hole in one on #2 Gold back in December was a good one, but no moment is more fulfilling than anytime I can get in Chris “The Champ” Goodson’s pockets on the golf course.
Describe your dream DAC day — no schedule, no limits. What are you doing, who’s with you, and what snack is riding along in your golf cart?
It’s mid-September, and the first cool weather
Saturday after a hot Dallas summer. I’m set to tee off at 9 am and have a breakfast burrito from the 9 & 1/2 ready to go. We have a 2 on 2 scratch game match- me and Michael Buttarazzi (AKA New York Mike) versus Sam Fishman and his partner of choice. The match is all square going into the last hole, but Fishman has a tight lie by the green he needs to get up and down to keep the match alive. He brings his highest lofted wedge out for it and well- we win. We then go into the 19th hole to watch the morning slate of college football games finish up before going out for another 9 holes. Life is good!
What’s your go-to post-round meal or drink at the Club? Bonus points for your favorite 19th-hole pairing?
Well usually whoever on the golf course is responsible for buying the drinks after, so if I lose then I love to order anything top shelf. If I had a good day on the course, I am typically getting a pitcher of beer (Bud Light specifically if JP Haskins is with me) and an order of wings. Half buffalo, half lemon pepper is the play!
What Club event, tradition, or small detail makes you feel most connected to the DAC community?
I would say 4th of July is that event for us every year. It’s always a blast to see our friend’s families together to remind us how much more of a place DAC is then just where I play golf all the time!
If you could create a custom DAC date night — “designed by Mr. and Mrs. Black” — what would it include? Twilight 9 holes and then a frozen Tito’s Lemonade at the pool. Then a nice dinner on the back patio of the 19th hole followed up with some drinks around the firepit.
Imagine you’re welcoming a new member your age: what’s in their DAC “starter kit”? What are the must-knows, must-dos, and the one thing they definitely shouldn’t miss? Everything cooked on the 9 & ½ flat top is delicious. If there is something in the pro shop you like but not in your size, order it through Niki [ndavis@dacstaff.org]. Go compete on the short game area with friends- the harder the up and downs the better. Always fix your pitch marks and sand your divots!
What does being part of the DAC community mean to you both, and what keeps you excited for the next five years? When we first joined DAC 5 years ago, I was really just looking for a place to play golf. Now some of my closest friends are ones that I have made at DAC and we even go on trips together. Being a part of the DAC community has become a huge part of our lives and we always look forward to our time spent at the Club. Our membership’s commitment to always improving the Club keeps me excited for the next 5 years and beyond.
The Blacks’ love for DAC goes far beyond the game—it’s about the friendships, the traditions, and the everyday moments that make the Club feel like home! JJ and Anne Claire are a true example of what it means to be part of the DAC community!

If a player has a 9:00 tee time, they must arrive at the designated tee prior to that time and be ready to play (with at least one club and one ball) at 9:00:00. If they arrive at 9:00:01 they are late to the tee. If they arrive prior to their tee time but don’t have a club and a ball until 9:00:01, they are not “ready to play” at 9:00:00 and they are late to the tee. In both of these cases, the player gets the General Penalty (2 strokes

in stroke play; loss of hole in match play) as long as they start play of the first hole within 5 minutes of their tee time. The penalty is applied to the first hole.
If they make their first stroke before 9:05:00, they get the penalty but they still get to play. For example, in stroke play, a player arrives at the tee ready to play at 9:02. If they take 4 strokes to play the first hole, their score for that hole is 6. If it was match play and the player arrived at 9:02 (and their opponent was there on time), the late player loses hole 1 and their match moves to hole 2 with the late player 1 down.
If they make their first stroke at 9:05:01, in either stroke or match play, they are DQ’d. And now they have some free time to study this Rule.

BLUE COURSE PROJECT ENHANCEMENTS ABOVE & BELOW THE SURFACE
Travis Moore GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
From new cart paths to hidden playability upgrades, here’s a look at what’s improved and what’s ahead in Phase 2
What improvements were made?
All new cart paths, several new tee boxes, complete irrigation system replacement, drainage enhancements, erosion control, water feature repairs, and more.
Were there any hidden upgrades?
A few examples that might be less obvious to golfers include: Re-routing of cart paths to make them less visible from the tee shot. Several areas in the roughs were smoothed and regrassed resulting improved aesthetics and playability – many golfers will forget how bad some of these areas were before the renovation. The new “back tees” will provide additional yardage for those playing the “tips”, but they will also give us more options for those playing all sets of tees. While it may not apparent at first - the new irrigation system will positively impact playing conditions and aesthetics, by allowing us to more precisely manage our water. Repairs to water features on 5 Blue and 11 Blue were also completed during the project.
This
Is Just Phase 1
The primary goal for this phase was to address major infrastructure, but also improve aesthetics and provide a few design enhancements. We also needed to ensure all the upgrades will fit with future improvement work in Phase 2.
Hidden Upgrades
Re-Routed Cart Paths – Less Visible from tee shots for improved sightimes.
Smoothed & Regrassed Rough Areas –Better aesthetics and more playable tees.
Strategic Tee Placement – New tees add yardage and variety.
Precise Water Management – New irrigation allows more accurate control, improving turf health and aesthetics yearround.
Water Feature Improvements – Bank stabilization and pump restoration.

BACK TO SCHOOL FITNESS GUIDE:
Practical Tips for a Healthy Routine
As the school year begins, establishing a consistent and balanced routine is key—not just for academic success, but for physical and mental well-being too. Whether you're a parent, student, or both, this guide offers realistic and effective fitness tips to help ease the transition into a healthier school year.
Schedule
Fitness Like a Class
Make physical activity a non-negotiable part of your day. Just like math or science, exercise deserves a spot on your schedule.
Tip: Choose a consistent time—before school, after homework, or even during a study break. Even 20 minutes a day can make a big difference in energy, mood, and focus.
Make Sleep a Priority
Quality sleep supports academic performance, emotional regulation, and physical health.
Recommended sleep durations:
Kids (6–13 years): 9–11 hours
•
Teens (14–17 years): 8–10 hours
Adults: 7–9 hours
Tip: Set a regular bedtime, limit screentime before bed, and create a calming nighttime routine.
Eat to Fuel the Day
Healthy eating is essential for staying energized and focused throughout the school day.
Smart nutrition tips:
Start the day with a balanced breakfast— think protein (eggs, yogurt) and whole grains (oats, whole-wheat toast).
Pack nutritious snacks like fruit, trail mix, cheese sticks, or sliced veggies.
Cut Back Screen Time
Too much screen time can drain your energy and steal valuable movement opportunities.
Tip: Replace 30 minutes of non-essential screen time with something active—go for a walk, stretch, do jumping jacks, or dance to your favorite song.
Keep Fitness Fun and Varied
Boredom is the enemy of routine. Keep things interesting by mixing up your activities.
Ideas to keep moving:
•
• Join a school sport or local recreational league. Try different workouts: strength training, cardio, yoga, or even dance videos. Make weekends active—go for hikes, bike rides, or play outside as a family. Turn chores into a challenge (e.g., "vacuum race" or timed clean-ups).
Stay hydrated—bring a reusable water bottle and aim to drink throughout the day.
• •
also completed advanced Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) training and launched Four Iron Fitness, a golf-focused fitness program designed to improve strength, mobility, and performance.
Outside of work, Bernie enjoys golfing, staying active, and spending time with his wife, Stephanie, and their two German Shepherds, Mila and Maya.
Bernie is excited to help members achieve their fitness goals—whether in the gym, on the course, or on the court. Be sure to stop by the Fitness Center to meet him!
Bonus: Make It a Family Effort
Fitness is easier (and more fun) when everyone’s on board.
Tip: Plan weekly family fitness nights, weekend walks, or healthy cooking challenges together. Kids are more likely to stay active when parents lead by example.
Final Thought:
Back-to-school season is a great time to hit reset and build habits that support lifelong health. Start small, stay consistent, and remember—progress is better than perfection.
