Sunshine and longer days for play are just around the corner as spring returns to Dallas Athletic Club. This month the Board of Directors and management team are pleased to introduce our new Director of Golf, Renaldo Chiang. With years of experience in competitive play and club management, Renaldo is eager to work alongside our staff and members to elevate the golfing experience at our Club. His introduction in this newsletter will familiarize our membership with Renaldo, but when you see him around the Club, please take the opportunity to introduce yourself and extend a warm welcome.

At this time, the first phase of the Blue Course renovation is well underway and on schedule. We appreciate the patience and support of the membership as the golf course and tennis court improvements take place. Aesthetic and functional updates to these Club assets will create an even more enjoyable recreational environment, and we cannot wait for you to

experience the updates. Please stay up-to-date by reading communication from the golf and tennis staff in your DAC app or email.

Voting for the Board of Directors election is currently open to full voting members. New Board members will be announced at the DAC Annual Meeting in the Royal Room on Wednesday, March 12th. I encourage you to vote using the electronic ballot in your email and please plan to attend the Annual Meeting – it is a great opportunity to hear a recap of 2024 and future Club plans for 2025.

Membership at DAC has always been a privilege, but now more than ever, becoming a member requires greater patience and resources. The waitlist for full membership is 2-3 years long and the initiation fee is currently $60,000. The DAC Membership Committee requires sponsors to have a great deal of accountability and new member applications are carefully reviewed monthly. DAC

The Board of Directors and Dallas Athletic Club management are pleased to announce Renaldo Chiang as our new Director of Golf Operations beginning March 1, 2025.

Renaldo comes to us from Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco where he served as Director of Golf for the past two years. Prior to relocating to Texas, his experience includes over a decade of progressive leadership experience in

management and the Board remain focused on the member experience, and ultimately, creating a retreat where you and your family can enjoy the exclusive amenities and services available at our Club.

Last, but not least: It will be a busy spring at DAC - don’t miss a few Club favorites! Registration for Summer Camp & Swim Team opens March 1st. Easter is not too far away – join the fun of the DAC Easter Egg Hunt, or enjoy Easter brunch hosted by Chef Michael and his fantastic culinary team. Get out on the course, get out on the courts, and enjoy the season!

It is my pleasure to serve our Club and its members.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon,

golf operations, member engagement and team leadership as the Head Golf Professional and Assistant General Manager at the Oaks Club at Valencia and Valencia Country Club as well as First Assistant Golf Professional at Oakmont Country Club, in California.

Please join us in welcoming Renaldo to our Club. His understanding of golf operations and dedication to the member experience will enable us to enhance and improve all aspects of our golf program.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

EMBRACING THE DAC EXPERIENCE SINCE 1995CAROL ANN & GARY DAVIS

We shine the Member Spotlight on Carol Ann and Gary Davis, whose journey at Dallas Athletic Club began in 1995! With unforgettable experiences, such as meeting Jack Nicklaus and celebrating New Year's Eve together, Gary and Carol Ann Davis embody the joy and camaraderie that can only be found at Dallas Athletic Club!

"We have made some lifelong friends at the Club. We met some of our closest friends when our children were young and struggling to stay in their chairs at dinner. The gentleman behind us started talking to our son, and we struck up a conversation with him and his wife. 30 years later, Bill & Deb Dunne are still some of our dearest friends!"

Why did you initially join the Club in 1995? We joined DAC because it had two excellent golf courses and numerous activities for our young children including the swimming pool, tennis, and golf camps. Our family still has fond memories of the 4th of July festivities at

the pool, swim team, and golf lessons from Donnie, Bradley, and Larry.

How does your family use the Club?

My Husband loves the golf, and I use the fitness club at least 4 days a week for the group classes. We’re planning on joining pickleball again and are thrilled we are getting courts. We both enjoy dining at the Club, including the outside patios when the weather is nice.

What is your favorite fitness class?

I participate in all the fitness classes, and I enjoy the variety. Body Burn and yoga stretch have increased my flexibility and strengthened my core.

What would you tell a new member who may be nervous about showing up for their first fitness class?

We are a very friendly group and everyone is at different levels so it’s easy to fit in. We get a great workout, but we are very social so it's lots of fun too!

welcome to our newest & littlest DAC member!

New addition to your family?

We want to celebrate our littlest new members! Please e-mail cwheatley@ dacstaff.org a picture of your newest addition along with their name and date of birth to be included in the following newsletter. I will also make sure they are updated in your DAC Member Profile!

What is your favorite event hosted by DAC? Why is this your favorite?

We have always enjoyed the 4th of July activities and fireworks, as well as hosting our annual supper club Christmas Party each December. We have also found some of the chef-cooking dinners, and wine and whiskey tastings to be super fun. We’ve had numerous birthday parties and celebration dinners at the Club.

If you were to spend all day at the Club, describe the perfect DAC day. A perfect day at DAC is a fitness class for me, and a round of golf for Gary, followed by dinner and drinks with friends on the patio.

The staff at DAC is wonderful. We can't mention names here because there are too many, but everyone is friendly and helps make the DAC experience super enjoyable!

From attending DAC’s first fitness class, to seeing the pool grow into the operation we know and love, we are thankful for the Davis family chose to be a part of the DAC Family!

The DAC swim team is a great place to make friends, strengthen your swimming skills, and have fun while competing against other local country clubs!

Season Dates: May 28 – June 26

New Swimmer Evaluation

May 22, 5:30–7:00 pm

Just bring your goggles and swim suit! This is a come and go event for children new to the swim team. This will help parents determine if they should join the swim team or continue another year of swim lessons.

PLAYING CONDITIONS AND NEW TECHNOLOGY

At DAC we are constantly looking at how incorporating new technology can positively impact playing conditions. Currently we rely on advanced hole location software, the latest irrigation system controls, soil moisture meter and sensors, weather models for fertilizer and pesticide applications, GPS sprayer control, drone mapping, and more.

Soon we will begin utilizing the USGA’s new GS3 ball to better track the impact of maintenance practices on not only putting green speed but also firmness and smoothness.

Additionally, we are experimenting with autonomous mowers and a robotic ball picker for the driving range. As with any new technologic advancements – it will take time to learn how effective each item will be and how to best incorporate them into our operations. Our goal is to take advantage of these new “tools” by combining them with trditional maintenance practices in such a way that you, as golfers, can see the benefits on the course.

BLUE COURSE PROJECT

Sanders Golf has focused primarily on irrigation system installation for the last few months and continues to steadily progress throughout the property. By March and April, new cart paths, drainage improvements, and new tee box locations will begin to take shape. To date, we have been able to keep hole closures to a minimum. We will certainly continue these efforts going forward, but please be prepared for more wide spread hole closures as the pace of construction steadily increases. Our goal remains to be finished with all major work by mid-Summer.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to a busy spring golf season!

HOLE SPOTLIGHT

HOW TO CONQUER THE 11TH HOLE ON BLUE

Navigate one of DAC’s trickiest holes with insights from PGA Pro, Stuart Hendley.

One of my favorite holes on either course here at DAC is 11 Blue.  This is a tricky hole with plenty of trouble.  The mid to long range hitter can drive it far down the hole or to the end of the fairway and then hit some type of wedge to the green.  That same longer hitter can hit something much shorter off the tee to the 125 - 150 yard range from the green and then hit some type of short iron up and over everything.  It really depends what each golfer's comfort level is with both of those options.  The shorter tee shot is less risky, but then leaves a longer approach shot.  I'm more comfortable hitting the shorter tee shot and then going up and over everything with some type of short iron.  The shorter hitters simply need to advance the ball as far down the fairway as possible in order to get their next shot or two to an area at the end of the fairway that allows that golfer to hit as short a shot as possible to the green.  When the pin is in the front "bowl" section of this green, it is accessible for most golfers.  The back left and front right hole locations require more thought depending on your lie (fairway, rough, divot).  Any type of more challenging lie

than a pure fairway lie should make the golfer think about hitting more to the center of this green considering the amount of trouble around both of these hole locations. If the hole location is front right over that bunker, there is very little room to land and stop your ball.  The golfer needs to be hitting something high enough with enough spin to stop the ball in that very small area or taking this pin on is not a good idea.  If you are unable to do that due to your lie or you are simply not capable of hitting that shot, trying to get your ball 20 - 30 feet left of the hole in the middle of the green is your best option.  The best or worst club in our bag can sometimes be the one between our ears!

SHELLY DAVIS, PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL

At Dallas Athletic Club, we take pride in offering top-tier golf instruction and an exceptional playing experience. This month, we’re spotlighting Shelly Davis, our PGA Golf Professional, whose expertise and passion for the game makes a lasting impact on our members.

A Passion for Golf

Shelly has been part of the DAC family since 2013 and has 29 years of experience in golf instruction, tournament play, and golf operations. A PGA Golf Professional / Former University of Texas Player / Certified Titleist TPI Instructor, Shelly specializes in short game, junior development and instructing players of all levels.

Coaching Philosophy

“Since each golfer is unique and no two golf swings are the same, I value learning what works best for each individual and providing a personalized instruction plan to fit their swing and playing style.” “I enjoy the personal interactions that the teacher/student MEET THE PROS:

relationship provides which allows for long lasting friendships.

Pro Tips & Advice

Heavily influenced by the Harmon family. They were my mentors and my teaching style is much like theirs. “Make the game simple. The first thing I look at and focus on is basic fundamentals: grip, posture, alignment and ball position. Most students are out of position because of their alignment. They either aim too far right or two far left. Again, make the game simple by laying down alignment sticks at your feet to check your alignment. Next thing I focus is the grip. How you set your hands on the club has a huge effect on how well you strike the ball and control where it goes. A good grip consistently squares the clubface and influences a good plane in your backswing.

UNSUNG WINE PAIRINGS

to Elevate Steak Night

Macon Simonson CLUBHOUSE MANAGER

Here in Texas, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is known as “The King” when it comes to a dinner involving beef. Next time you join us for Steak Night, consider hopping off the beaten path and elevating your experience with one of the following offerings from our list:

Rombauer Zinfandel, Napa Valley, CA. ($66) A light-bodied wine with moderate tannins and high acidity that pairs well with a Ribeye.

CHEF'S TABLE

New Seasonal Menus

I’m excited to introduce our new seasonal menu, crafted with fresh ingredients sourced both locally and from around the world. My team and I have carefuly designed each dish to highlight the best flavors of the season, ensuring a dynamic and delicious dining experience.

This menu will change frequently, giving you the opportunity to enjoy a variety of seasonal specialties throughout the year.

I look forward to sharing these flavors with you—see you at the Club!

Dom. Paul Jaboulet “Les Cedresʺ Châteauneufdu-Pape (CdP), Rhône Valley, FR. ($58) A full-bodied, complex blend of red varieties. Consider this when ordering the Honey-Brined Sakura Pork Chop, the Grilled Alba Lamb Chops or any Chophouse feature. Pro tip – get the Truffle & Mushrooms addition with this one.

Red wines from Bordeaux - No surprise here, a fool-proof classic pairing with beef. Full-bodied, tannin-rich wines with incredible depth and length. We have added five new Bordeaux varietals to the list for your enjoyment.

See you at the Club!
