president's letter

We are looking forward to a bright 2023 here at DAC! As you may already know, we are embarking on a big infrastructure and design plan for the Gold Course. Our strategic planning committee, finance committe, and Board of Directors started work on this five years ago and here we are now hoping to begin this project. We ask for your support and patience during this huge undertaking. Lance Patterson and his team will do their best to make sure we get as much golf played as possible while the project is in progress. Again, please exercise your patience during this time.

This will be an interesting year for other clubs as well. Many of our sister clubs are having similar projects and shutting down their golf courses. We are blessed to have two championship golf courses that we will be able to continue to play even with our ongoing project. Hopefully, the Gold Course will only be shut down for a few months as we reseed the greens.

Our membership continues to remain full, with a healthy waiting list for all categories. If you have someone interested in the Club, it would be wise to get them on the waitlist sooner than later. With our new project on the Gold Course and an upgraded tennis facility, we continue to be a highly desirable club here in Dallas.

I would like to recognize Chef Michael and his staff. It’s been difficult at times in maintaining grocery stock, both finding it and for a competitive price. I believe the food is as good as we've had here at Dallas Athletic Club at any time. He continues to try new things, and he listens to the membership about different ideas. His creativity is a value to our Club and its members. With the combination of The Elm dining room and his fine culinary ideas, you should come out and have a nice evening with family and friends.

As we move through 2023, it will be both an exciting and challenging time. Please remember to exercise patience and understanding as we make improvements to our Club. Also, remember to thank our staff across the board as they do their best to provide a wonderful and hospitable environment for us, our families, and our guests.

See you at the Club!

Happy New Year, DAC! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. With a New Year comes a time for fresh ideas, new designs, and finding creative ways to improve our member communications.

I am excited to announce that we will release a redesigned DAC website early this year! Our current go-live date is February 1, 2023. The redesign will give us a fresh look using updated photos,

layouts, fonts and the DAC color palette. We also have worked to make the member home page a bit easier to navigate and more informative. You will find quick links at the top of your screen to easily make reservations of any kind, update your profile photo and information, view menus and pay your statements; all within one click!

Along with the website redesign, we have also been brainstorming on how we can provide you with informative content and making the newsletter something more exciting to read. In this issue, you will find updates from the Clubhouse Manager to What's in Lance's Golf Bag

to the famous DAC Dutch Chicken Soup Recipe! Our hope here is to give you more informative content from the Pros and Managers around the Club.

I hope you enjoy the updates to our communication efforts this New Year. I am very excited and I hope you are as well!

Happy New Year and I will see you at the Club!

Happy New Year! We are very excited about serving you and your family in 2023! It is our hope that you will take every opportunity to join in on the fun throughout the New Year by utilizing the Club.

In 2023, we are adding more to our DAC Newsletter to highlight member milestones, new additions, graduating seniors, and articles from the pros of the Golf and Tennis departments. We hope you enjoy the additional information throughout the year.

I would also like to remind you to update your member photo in your profile. We are busy improving our point of sales system within the Club to better serve you. We ask that you please upload a picture to your DAC Profile. This will be a helpful resource in training our new employees as well as improving our billing processes, knowing we have billed the proper member when using the Club. You are able to upload your picture using the DAC App or you can upload a picture from a desktop computer through the website. First, visit your profile on the website and scroll to the “My Profile” section, and select “Edit.” Under the picture box, you will see the upload icon.

Thank you for your continued support! We have so much to look forward to this year!

The year was 1925. Our downtown Club was the highlight of all of Downtown Dallas with a membership of some of the most notable men and women in Dallas society. They were the movers and shakers of the city and word has it they came in droves to enjoy the Club. The formal opening was

held on May 9, 1925 and was the finest celebration in Dallas with a level of service by the staff that was the gold standard of the day. There were receiving lines of the most prominent citizens in Dallas many of whom were founders of the Downtown Club. The era represented the very unstructured times in Dallas history. The liquor laws were most difficult and the members had to have their own liquor lockers to store their liquor at the Club. Some of the most important business meetings were held at the Club during lunchtime and the nighttime socials and dancing were just as important. Dallas Athletic Club provided all of the social activities in the City of Dallas. They even had their own orchestra for their dancing pleasure every Friday and Saturday night.

Message from Joanna Brewer

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As we wrap up the holidays, I can’t help but be so grateful for all of the DAC members and staff. Over the last month and a half we welcomed 400 for Thanksgiving, 600 for the Gingerbread House decorating party, and 1,400 for Pancakes with Santa. As our membership continues to trend younger, we get so excited in revamping classic DAC family events to keep even the most active kids entertained. We also had a successful sold-out New Year’s Eve dinner presented by Chef Michael Lamping in The Elm Dining Room. Members enjoyed everything from a Pan Seared Sea Scallop starter all the way through to the Lime and Pineapple Cremeux dessert course.

The winter season also means a new round of seasonal cocktails. Winter Cocktails debuted on Friday, December 3rd and I specifically tasked Matthew Koss, Beverage Manager and Gio Ross, Bartender to create six winter inspired cocktails using fresh and unique ingredients. Whether it be the trendy Carajillo as a night cap, or the classic Kentucky Egg Nog, these are bound to be a hit amongst your friends and families.

See you at the Club!

jbrewer@dacstaff.org

Everyone wanted to enjoy the camaraderie, great food and great music with dancing and great libations. You could enjoy lunch at your business meeting, then go for a nap, enjoy a game of billiards, handball or swimming, a Turkish bath or many other amenities. Many of our members rented apartments in the building.

The Downtown Club took three years to build and the history is fascinating. It was one of the most majestic buildings in the city and it dominated the Dallas skyline. The Downtown Club was not strictly adult entertainment. Many children had fond memories of enjoying a swim with their father or mother or a special treat of lunch beforehand. The Downtown Club was also known to be a training ground for Olympic athletes as well as everyday athletes. Boxing drew near capacity crowds and the DAC team who won the 1947

Golden Gloves prevailed again winning another championship the next year. Gymnastics also played a huge role in our history of athletics as well as swim teams. We carry the tradition on of great swim teams today!

Many of the same principles that we live by today were the same back then. It was a time and place that a few of our current members remember with fondness, and so our traditions continue and give us a foundation and a feeling of comfort, peace and enjoyment every day while at the Club.

Find more histroy on our website or in one of our Centennial books, available for purchase in the Golf Shop!

Spring is right around the corner...

My favorite part of living in North Texas is the fact that winter is only about a solid month. I hope I don’t jinx us! As a chef in the Lone Star State I enjoy the long growing seasonings and the abundance of local farms and products. Our produce vender, Chef’s Produce, helps us take full advantage of this. They pull from the best local growers in the state and surrounding region, providing us with the best fruits and vegetables available year-round.

In just a few short months, our menus will reflect what is available. We will see more asparagus and baby vegetables. Varieties of carrots and kohlrabi will highlight one of our spring salads, and the list goes on and on. Other spring favorites are some that are foraged

else where in the US. Every spring we bring in ramps, a small wild onion, and process to use throughout the year. Some items we make are compound butters, ramp pesto and even go as far as pickling the leaves, to puree for our housemade salad dressings. Another favorite, and a true sign of spring, are morel mushrooms. Again, we bring several pounds at peak of the season to sauté fresh in pasta dishes, chicken fry and serve as appetizers, and dehydrate a few to use a little later in the year. We try to be very mindful of the product and not waste a thing, giving the produce the respect it deserves.

We are still a couple of months away from spring, but in the kitchen we are already discussing what we want to show case this spring. We like to think ahead, preparing and planning what we want to showcase with our talents and provide something special here at DAC.

golf Course Conditions

One of our biggest priorities with upcoming course improvement projects is ensuring that any infrastructure needs are adequately addressed. Some of these items are obvious to golfers - bunker sand, leveling tee boxes, cart paths, etc. However, most of the infrastructure that is necessary to provide top quality playing conditions often goes unseen. Take the irrigation system for example. We have four pump stations on site that are responsible for supplying thousands of sprinklers with water through a complex network of miles of pipe, valves, wire, and communication components. Other examples include underground drainage pipes, root zone construction for greens, maintenance facility infrastructure, and other utilities. Proper construction and dedicated maintenance greatly extend the life of these items and also have a major impact on replacement cost down the road. This has certainly been the case at DAC. Most of the aforementioned items range from 20 to 40+ years old – significantly

Each newsletter we will be highlighting one of the Professional staffs “What’s in the Bag.” This month we will be looking at Director of Golf, Lance Patterson’s bag. He’s been a Taylor Made staff member for six years and plays the Stealth

exceeding industry standards for life expectancy. Check out the chart displaying the life expectancies of these items on our Club Blog on the website or app. However, like most things – these items must eventually be upgraded and/or replaced. Infrastructure improvements are expensive and often difficult to complete without significantly disrupting the golf course. Our goal through master planning is to ensure that we are prepared to complete as much of this type of work as possible while the course is closed for design changes and/or other playability improvements. We are currently finalizing plans to begin implementing the Gold Course Master Plan later this year. The exact scope of work will be determined in coming weeks, but included infrastructure items currently include: complete irrigation system replacement, new pond water pump station, re-grassing greens with an improved variety of bentgrass, replacement of several large drain pipes, pond bank stabilization, new cart paths, new bunker sand, leveling tees, and more. More information including expected course closures and construction timelines will be provided as soon as possible. Thank you and we are excited about what this year has in store for DAC.

Shop Talk

Happy New Year! As cliché as it is, there’s no better time to say “out with the old” than at the beginning of a glorious, fresh new year, and welcoming 2023 by giving yourself the gift of a closet that you’ll wear everything in, right!?

New fashion trends will provide aesthetic and functional appeal for golfers in 2023.

Athleisure is the fastest-growing clothing segment. Made of polyester and other high-tech synthetic fabrics, athleisure garments are attractive, versatile, stylish, and comfortable. People of all ages wear athleisure gear to work, school, social gatherings, the gym and most important on and off the course. The clothes are made from breathable, lightweight, rapid drying, wrinkle-free, moisture-wicking fabrics and UV-repelling characteristics. Athleisure products are made by major brands like most of

Golf Lesson with StuartChip Shots

Now that we are in the winter months, I’m sure everyone notices that hitting basic chip shots around the greens off of the dormant bermuda grass becomes more challenging. For those of you hitting behind the ball, scooping or hitting it thin sending it rolling off the back of the green, the following information should help.

Get the shaft slightly more upright at address (higher hands) and choke down on the club slightly. Place the ball around the middle of your stance

the ones found in the Golf Pro Shop.

A few fun facts about athleisure wear:

• The value of the worldwide market for athleisure is estimated to be $348.95 billion.

• It is forecasted to increase to over $517.48 billion in 2023 and beyond.

• Athleisure’s market value has an annual growth rate of 8.1% worldwide.

• The U.S. is the largest market for athleisure products. It accounts for about 30% of worldwide sales of nearly $400 billion.

To stay on top of your wardrobe, a great way to continue getting rid of the things is to flip all of your hangers in your closet in the opposite direction at the beginning of the year. Every time you wear something, swap it to face the other way. Then, at the end of next year, you’ll be able to clearly see the things you haven’t touched and can more easily justify getting rid of them without any debate.

Happy Shopping!

and lean slightly towards the target placing your chest even with the front side (nearest the target) of the ball. Now move the club back and through using your shoulders and chest keeping your weight (chest) on the front side of the ball. This creates a pendulum (shaft angle up) for accuracy due to less club face rotation and more solid contact due to keeping your weight slightly leaning towards the target. Which then keeps you from leaning away from the target to lift the ball causing poor contact. Once your contact improves you start to relax and hit better quality shots, which is obviously more fun!

Contact me or any of our other professionals if you need some help with this or anything else!

Golf RulePenalty Areas

Red penalty areas give you three relief options, yellow gives you two (Rule 17.1)

There is one notable difference between the options a player has when taking relief after hitting a ball into a red penalty area versus yellow. Red stakes allow players to also take lateral relief (up to two club-lengths no nearer the hole) from where the ball entered the penalty area in addition to returning to the spot from the previous shot and back-on-the-line relief where you can drop anywhere on an imaginary line drawn from the hole through the spot where the ball last crossed into the penalty area. The last two are the lone options if the penalty area is yellow. All options require a player take a one-stroke penalty, but the player does also have the option to play the ball as it lies.

There are also no longer special rules that apply to you when playing from a penalty area. You are now allowed to ground your club and take practice swings like you would elsewhere on the course. You can also remove loose impediments so long as you don’t move your ball, improve your lie or improve the conditions affecting your stroke.

nprinz@dacstaff.org

New to the Tennis Shop

New Wilson Pro Staff is coming out to DAC at the end of February! In February 2023, Wilson will finally release the new Pro Staff v14 endorsed by Roger Federer. Like the other new releases of Wilson's lines, it features colorshifting paint, this time with copper and black dominating colors. Roger Federer has already been seen on court with the racket, which will feature "Paradigm Bending" technology.

The human brain cannot comprehend the negative. It is incapable. To expand on that, what if I said “Don’t think of a tennis ball.” What happened? I would be willing to bet you thought of a tennis ball. There is a reason for that and it is because you cannot tell the brain not to do something. For example, if you go through trees on skis and say “Don’t hit a tree! Don’t hit a tree!” you will only be looking at the trees and will crash. As opposed to going through the same trees on skis saying “Follow the snow. Follow the path.” If you said this then you would only see the snow and the pathway out. This same concept applies directly to the mind of a tennis player. Don’t focus on the obstacles because those obstacles will be all you see. Try to focus only on positive outcomes in your next match and see what happens! Happy New Year!

What are you focusing on? The Path or the Obstacle... Stroke Series... Serve

The serve is the only shot in tennis where you have complete control because you start the point by sending instead of receiving the ball. As you enter competition, establishing a service ritual or routine can ensure you to take time and find your focus before each point. Your service ritual can be as simple as bouncing the ball three times before starting your service motion or rocking side to side, breathing out — anything that forces you to take your time before hitting the serve will help you get a sense of control and focus. Find what is comfortable for you and make it a habit no matter what the score. A consistent routine will lead to a more consistent serve.

The First Grand Slam of the season will start on January 16th and ends on Sunday, January 29th. Here are your DAC winner predictions...

Seventy percent of all golfers suffer from early extension. Early extension in the simplest terms is any movement of the lower body toward the golf ball during the downswing. It causes your arms to get “stuck” behind your body and forces your torso to rise up as you come through the ball striking zone, resulting in a two-way miss: the push block right and the hook left. Since your hands are lagging behind your lower body and your hips open, the club path goes more out and pushes it right. Or, you might subconsciously realize how right it’s going and try to course correct by flipping your hands at impact, thus creating the nasty hook. Golfer’s who can’t move their hips independent from their upper and

The Plan "2023"

Figuring out how to stick with New Year’s Resolutions is tough. It’s much easier to make fitness resolutions than it is to find the sustained motivation to keep them. We all have the best intentions on January 1, and then as the year rolls on, we lose steam, confidence, and motivation. What seemed so feasible just weeks ago can somehow morph into something impossible.

What if this year was different? Here are suggestions from your DAC Fitness Professionals. We share the techniques they use to help clients stick to a workout routine and meet their fitness goals when they’re feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and/or otherwise unmotivated.

1. Get yourself to the Gym! Often times, the hardest part about figuring out how to stick to a workout routine is simply getting to the gym to actually exercise—and

lower bodies will need to focus on mobility and increase their range of motion.

Before you can go about correcting early extension in your swing, you have to determine whether it’s due to a physical limitation or a technical issue with your swing.

Fitness Schedule

Yoga Wednesdays at 7:00 am Fridays at 9:00 am

When early extension is a physical issue, it usually means you have limited mobility in your ankles, knees, hips and/or spine.

not the exercise itself. Come up with a plan. Whether it be joining group classes, having an exercise buddy or having a personalized plan put together by a DAC Fitness Professional. Get to the gym!

2. Be patient and play the long game. At the beginning of the year, there is that frenzy to achieve fitness goals. Amid this frenzy, it’s easy to expect immediate results. A better approach is to acknowledge that lasting changes don’t come overnight. Be patient throughout the process and you will see results in the long run.

3. Ditch the all-or-nothing mind-set. The all-or-nothing approach to exercise is common. People either believe that they have to do a workout exactly how they imagined it, or they throw in the towel. While it’s good to have some structure to your workout plan sometimes things don’t go exactly according to plan. Instead of believing that you’ve blown your

workout, do as much as you can. Sometimes it means pushups and crunches at home and that’s OK.

4. Tell yourself you will exercise for ten minutes. Sometimes the thought of a workout can be much worse than the workout itself. On days when you wake up to the don’t want to’s, just commit to five minutes, or simply go to the gym with the intention of doing one to two simple things. Once you get there, you’ll likely want to stay longer. Just showing up can be really powerful mentally and create a habit.

5. Don’t compare yourself to other people. Don’t compare yourself to other gym-goers. It’s easy to watch someone run a mile with ease or jump from exercise to exercise with very little effort. Most likely, they have been working out for a long time. We all start somewhere. Be realistic and consistent. You’ll see great improvement over time.
