A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT WARREN SIBLEY As the year winds down and we look to put a bow on what almost every member can agree is one of the most unusual and trying years of our life, Dallas Athletic Club has begun its new fiscal year, which began November 1. We continue to sustain strong member usage in the dining facilities, on the tennis courts, and out on the golf course. We’ve had outdoor Wednesday Family Dinners with over 200 people, very well attended Friday Night Live Music Series, and our rounds played on the golf course are at all-time highs. Talk of the Club’s strength and the more sustained usage of the Club and its amenities provides an opportunity to provide items of note and make a few reminders.

Employee Christmas Fund

First and foremost, is a note and a reminder regarding our employees. Everything we do at the Club is made possible by the tireless effort and caring service of our employees.

Many are up before dawn and at the Club early to prepare the food, straighten the fitness center, mow the grass, or countless other tasks which must occur to help make our enjoyment of the Club the best it can be. The employees have taken Covid-19 very seriously and have abided by a mask wearing protocol, among other measures, in order to keep members and each other safe.

I bring this up to help remind the membership of what an exemplary staff we have, and also, to let everyone know how we can say “thank you” for all their effort. You will have an opportunity to give to our Employee Christmas Fund through your member account beginning in November. I hope you can give monetarily. A donation to the Employee Christmas Fund is a small way we can thank our employees through the Christmas Season.

Mesquite Social Services Toy Drive

The planning for our Annual Toy Drive for Mesquite Social Services is underway. Toys for those less fortunate is a great need this year more than ever. This is usually done in concert with our Member Open House so look for e-blasts and more information as we make plans to host this again this year. This is a small way that you as members can help all of the children in the area have a great Christmas and experience joy during the holiday season. Please look for more information in our weekly E-Blasts.

Covid-19

Never far from our mind is the current state of our pandemic. We appreciate the majority of our members looking out for each other, wearing masks and doing their part to curtail the spread of the virus. There are notes in almost every email outlining our expectations regarding Covid-19. These include our actions while at the Club, if you contract the disease, or have a first-person exposure to someone who has the disease or contracted it within 48 hours after your last exposure to them. Masks simply are not an option. We can all forget from time to time. Please pop back out to your vehicle and retrieve your mask, for the sake of your fellow member and our employees. As a last resort, Rachel and Rebecca have a spare mask or two if you

arrive without one.

Kitchen

Another item of note is the kitchen staff. Last month we celebrated Chef Mark’s incredible 32-year run as an employee at Dallas Athletic Club. He retired on September 30 ushering in the beginning of a new era in our kitchen.

Chef Michael arrived on October 1 and set out to build on the excellence Chef Mark brought to the kitchen, while at the same time beginning a new chapter of culinary excellence.

The pandemic brought unique challenges to our kitchen workspace. You may have noticed the menu. The kitchen has done a phenomenal job of providing an ever-expanding menu while dealing with the constraints of shortages in the food supply chain and the need to maintain social distancing while on the cooking line. Making matters more complex, with the removal of the buffet for safety concerns, feeding 250 guests who all arrive and want to eat at the same time (as in Family Night, or Friday Night Live Music, or during other events at the Club) we’ve run much longer wait times for food than can normally be considered acceptable. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make the best of the situation and continue to find innovative ways to deliver premier service under these new conditions.

Facility Upgrade and Strategic Planning

Over the last five, or so, years the Board of Directors, along with the Strategic Planning Committee, and others, have studied and planned for future capital expenditures and facility upgrades. We plan to have renderings very soon for what is to come. We have outlined in past newsletters, yearly membership meetings, and other places, many of the exciting upgrades that are planned. The most prominent, and the one surely to be enjoyed by many, is the dining room remodel. Along with the guidance and advice of our Clubhouse architect and interior designer, we have come up with a concept for a repurposed dining space and an indoor/outdoor bar which will further elevate our member experience.

New Members and Golf Notes

As we continue to strive to improve every area of the Club and as we continue to add new members, there will always be “growing pains” as these new members assimilate into Club life. A few reminders as we continue to enjoy unprecedented play on our courses. Please honor all tee times and cancel in a timely fashion if unable to use the tee time. On weekends, we ask that groups of five do not start until after noon. Also, guests are not allowed on the weekend until 12:00pm or after. When beginning a round, always remember to check-in with the pro shop.

Lastly, when completing a round, please return carts to the staging area. We’ve had a rash of carts left in the parking lot. Help us out by returning them to the proper place.

As this crazy year draws to a close, Dallas Athletic Club finds itself in its strongest position in a long time. We are excited to see what the future holds. Hope to see you soon at the Club.

FROM THE DESK OF CARI CUNNINGHAM As we say goodbye to 2020 and hello to the New Year, we all have reasons to celebrate!

For some, the holidays bring hope or new promises and for others they may be a time for setting goals or honoring traditions. As for the Club, I think it encompasses all of the above.

Our goal is to continue with some of our signature DAC traditions and events, while at the same time creating a safe and creative way to celebrate.

Thanksgiving Dinner To-Go: Don’t stand in the kitchen for hours! We are excited to offer Thanksgiving Dinner To-Go forms conveniently available online. Make sure you check out the delicious menu listed on page two.

Pancakes with Santa: Our dear friend Santa Claus has let us know that he is determined to visit his favorite DAC kiddos this year! In fact, he will be here two days this year so that he is able to visit everyone.

A New Year’s Eve to Remember: If ever there was a year that’s ending needed to be celebrated…

Bring your friends along and welcome the arrival of 2021 with your DAC Family! Chef Michael has an extravagant five-course meal planned that will be one you and your tastebuds don’t want to miss out on.

I encourage you all to share your Club with just one new person before the end of the year. The holiday season is the perfect time to be inviting your friends, family and colleagues to Dallas Athletic Club.

Whatever the New Year means to you, I hope it is filled with many blessings as we embark into 2021.

KEVIN NETTLES, SUPERINTENDENT COURSE CONDITIONS It’s safe to say this has been a very different year than last. We were able to complete all of our fall maintenance on the greens at the perfect time and they have completely recovered from the aerification process. The cooler temperatures that began in September slowed down the growth of the tees, fairways, and roughs making the playability more consistent from day to day.

We have replaced some of the

cart paths on the course in order to clean up some unsightly areas.

As we continue to improve our courses, we will be replacing several cart paths that are too narrow and the grass is constantly worn on each side of the paths. The new paths will be a minimum width of 8 feet along the fairways and 10 feet around the greens and tees.

Our maintenance projects for this winter will continue with aggressive tree trimming and installation of new drains in places that continually hold water. We look forward to the arrival of our fall color. Together with our landscape architect we have a great plan for the fall colors around the club.

Exercise for Immunity Jeff Hoke, Fitness Director

The weather is getting cooler, the holiday season is upon us and our time is challenged. This is often a time when exercise takes a back seat.

This year it is probably more important than ever to keep exercising or to start exercising in order to help our immune system stave off illnesses.

Did you know?

• Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, reducing your chances of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.

• Exercise causes change in antibodies and white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are the body’s immune system cells that fight disease. These antibodies or WBCs circulate more rapidly, so they could detect illnesses earlier than they might have before.

• The brief rise in body temperature during and right after exercise may prevent bacteria from growing. This temperature rise may help the body better fight an infection. (This is similar to what happens when you have a fever.)

• Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones. Some stress increases the chance of illness. Lower stress hormones may protect against illness.

Studies have shown that people who follow a moderately energetic lifestyle, benefit

most from starting or continuing an exercise program. A moderate program can consist of: • Participating in a group exercise class • Taking daily 20 to 30 minute walks • Going to the gym 3-4 days a week • Playing tennis or walking while playing golf Exercise makes you feel healthier and more energetic. It can help you feel better about yourself. So, go ahead, take that class or go for that walk. You will feel better and healthier for it.
