The Special Secretary of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) was speaking during a series of regional workshops, which were organised to facilitate the wider adoption of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP) platform across all the states/UTs to sensitise the state officialsaboutit.

She suggested that an interdepartmentalservicesimprovementgroupmaybeformed toaddresslogistics-relatedissuesandactionplansmaybe formulatedforbringingdownlogisticscostdulyidentifying priority areas for taking up multimodal infrastructure related interventions, according to a statement from the MinistryofCommerceandIndustry.

The first regional workshop for Central and Western Zone was organised on February 20, 2023, in Goa. The second regional workshop with nine states/UTs of the southern region was organised on March 10 and 11 in Kochi, Kerala. These southern states are Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andaman and Nicobar, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, LakshadweepandPuducherry.

Mapping of freight flows in order to have a demanddriven approach to logistics efficiency for the next 5-10 years, attracting private investments in logistics-related infrastructure and involving start-ups for solutions to promoting logistics efficiency were also mentioned in her remark,accordingtothestatement.

Shealsostressedupontheuseoftechnologyandgreen initiatives during planning of the logistics ecosystem includingbothplanningforinfrastructuredevelopmentfor newIndiaanddevelopinganefficientlogisticsecosystem.

NMP is a transformative approach that enables integrated planning and synchronised implementation for multimodal and last mile connectivity across the country. ItwaslaunchedbythePrimeMinisteronOctober13,2021, with a vision to break departmental silos in the government and institutionalise holistic planning for

stakeholders across major infrastructureprojects.

On the first day of the regional workshop in Kochi, a demonstration of best use cases in using the NMP was made by the central ministries. Experience, best practices and vision of using the NMP/SMP platform was shared by the nine participating States/UTs.

On the second day of the regional workshop in Kochi, there were discussions on National Logistics Policy, state logistics policies, Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS)andcitylogisticsplan.

For augmenting port connectivity and multimodality through PMGS, a presentation was made by the Cochin Port Authority followed by panel discussion with four major ports of Cochin, Kamarajar Vishakhapatnam and New Mangalore port. A site visit to Kochi was also organisedtostudyPortConnectivityandCoastalprojects.

State/UTLogisticsPolicyhasbeennotifiedby18states. Development of Logistics Ease Across Different State (LEADS) 2023-24 report has also commenced with the objective of analysing the logistics ecosystem of various States/UTs as per a framework, and rank states/UTs on logisticsease.

Duringtheworkshop,statesandUTsalsopresentedan overviewoftheirLogisticsPolicy.

Tamil Nadu presented a focus on reduction of cost of logistics for export-import as well as domestic trade in the Statewhichisexpectedtobereducedby5to6percent.

KarnatakapresenteditsfocusonimprovingtheState’s performanceinlogistics.

Andhra Pradesh highlighted their objective to address infrastructure gaps in logistics & supply chain and to promotetradefromtheEastCoast.

Telangana underlined its objective of developing a robust logistics ecosystem through MMLPs, dry ports, Cold storages etc. Andaman and Nicobar Islands presenteditsfocusonreducinglogisticscostbyenhancing efficiencybyenablingmultimodalconnectivity.

India and USA signs MoU on semiconductor Supply Chain and Innovation Partnership

NEW DELHI : A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on establishing semiconductor supply chain and innovation partnership under the framework of India – US Commercial Dialogue was signed between the two countries following the Commercial Dialogue 2023 heldinNewDelhi.

On the invitation of Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, the US Secretary of Commerce, Ms Gina Raimondo is on a visit to New Delhi. During this visit, the India-US Commercial Dialogue was relaunched recently to discuss cooperation for

The introduction of BIGEX charts the BangladeshIndia-Sri Lanka-Gulf corridor, transforming Bangladesh’s sea lane to the Gulf and India West Coast. Characterised by fast transit times, exports from Chittagong will reach Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi in just 14 and 15 days respectively. A more efficient and greener alternative to trucking, BIGEX will get Bangladesh shipments to Nhava Sheva and Mundra in 8and10daysrespectively.

BIGEX is also set to diversify Chittagong’s connectivity to transhipment hubs beyond the key Asian ports to the Gulf and India West Coast ports. This expands the routes to markets and further reduces transit time, such as that for U.S.-bound Bangladesh cargoesthatwillberelayedviaColombo.

Despite the aforementioned factors, the container shipping industry stillfacesuncertaintiesduetoongoingglobalinflationary pressuresandgeopoliticalrisks.

Vizhinjam Railway link: Port seeks amended green nod

COCHIN - Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) has filed a new application seeking an amendment to the environmental clearance (EC) for the tunnel rail connectivity projecttotheVizhinjamportinsteadoftheECalreadyobtainedfor theabove-groundrailconnectivityproposal.

Earlier, the expert appraisal committee (EAC) had sought clarifications while considering the application for

an amended EC in its meeting held in September 2022.

As per the application documents submitted on PARIVESH portal, the proposed development of an underground railway tunnel is to provide an optimal mode of connectivity to the under-development Vizhinjam Port and is a mandatory requirement to provide railway connectivity

Gujarat to directly send Kesar mangoes to US for the first time

AHMEDABAD : Gujarat’s renowned kesar mango will be exporteddirectlytotheUSforthefirsttimethisyear

The US department of agriculture’s animal and plant health inspection service (USDA-APHIS) approved the Gujarat agroradiation processing facility lastJuly

Farmers and exporters will now be able to increase exports tothe US. Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Ltd (GAIC) developed the facility at Bavla near Ahmedabad. Till now, Gujarat’s kesar and alphonso mangoes were exportedthroughMaharashtra.

A senior GAIC officer said, “USDA-APHIS approved the Bavla radiation processing facility last July The coming mango season will be the first in which Gujarat will directly export mangoes to the US market. Currently, mangoes from Gujarat reach the US through Maharashtra, which means higher logistics costs. Our facility was ready in 2014 but the approval was delayed. We believe if the weather stays good, we will see direct exports to the US of about 400 tonnes of mangoes between mid-AprilandJune.”

According to the Agriculture and Processed Food

Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), last year India’s mango exports to the US was 813 tonnes, valued at Rs 33.68crore.

Hiren Gandhi, former Chairman of GCCI’s food committee, said, “The US mandates that mangoes and other food products undergo irradiation, which kills insects on the fruit. The irradiation facility will help Gujarat farmers get better prices for their kesar mangoes in the international market. The US is a big market for mangoes and quality kesar will see good demand. The Australian market will also open for direct exports from Gujarat with this facility. Irradiation alsoincreases theshelflifeofmangobyatleast25days.”

Ashish Guru, Chairman of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) agriculture committee said, “Gujarat is a leading mango producer, and our mangoes are of better quality than the Mexican mangoes being sold in the US. It was difficult to export mangoes directly from Gujarat but with the irradiation facility in place, Gujaratbased exporters will be able to send mangoes to the US and commandpremiumpricesbecause oftheirsuperior quality.”

Govt plans Rs. 1,354-crore projects to develop Pipavav, Tuticorin Ports for offshore wind

NEW DELHI : The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will be submitting a proposal to the Ministry of Shipping for developing the ports of Pipavav (Gujarat) and Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu), to make them ready for handlingoffshorewindprojectcargo.

The National Institute of Wind Energy, (NIWE), which is under MNRE, has done a study on what needs to be done at these two ports, in terms of dredging, land reclamation, shore protection anddockingfacilities.

Revealing this at the second UK India Offshore Wind Summit, organised by the UK government and the Global Wind Energy Council, Dr Rajesh Katyal, said that the development of Pipavav port would cost Rs. 622 crore and thatofTuticorin, Rs.732crore.

He said that the government of India would decide whether the projects would be funded by the government itselforposedtotheWorldBankforfunding.

This proposal assumes significance against the backdrop of the fact that the government of India would soon come out with tenders for ‘seabed lease’ — first for 4GW of projects off TamilNaducoastandthenfor1GWoffGujarat coast.

At the Summit, the report titled ‘Capability Assessment of India’s Offshore Wind Supply Chain’, based on a study conducted by MEC Intelligence, a consultancy, and Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult of the UK government was released. The report notes that “new port side investment” couldvaryfromRs.1,500croretoRs.3,000crore.

Noting the huge potential for offshore wind off Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coast, Ellis said, “it is massively in the UK’s interests thatIndia grows itsoffshore windindustry,”because what India (and China) does for climate change affects the entireworld.

NEW DELHI - The potato, known as the king of vegetables, is in high demand in countries outside India. While potatoes are common in India and are easily available, thevegetable ispurchased atexorbitant pricesabroad.

Approximately 6,000 quintals of potatoes are being exported from Agra in response to demand from hotels and homesinMalaysia, Qatar,andDubai.

After flagging off trucks loaded with potatoes today, Agra’s Chief Development Officer A Manikandan told that farmers have been paid Rs 900 per quintal for export potatoes, while the government’s procurement price is set at Rs 650 per quintal Exporting potatoes is proving to be a profitable business forthesefarmersinthissituation.

Kaushal Kishore, Deputy Director Horticulture, told that in collaboration with the Horticulture Department and the Uttar Pradesh State Horticulture Cooperative Marketing Federation, Siddhi Vinayak Agro Processing Khandauli (Agra) has exported 6,000 quintals of potatoes abroad to ensure that potato farmers get the best price for their produce. Around 3000 quintal potatoes have been sent to Malaysia, and 3000 quintal potatoes have been sent to Dubai andQatar

Many trucks of potatoes have also been transported from Agra to Himmatnagar in Gujarat, where they will be exported to other countries via the Mundra Port. This LR variety potatowasexportedatacostofRs900perquintal.

Two-wheeler, passenger-vehicle exports decline in Feb

NEW DELHI : Exports of two-wheelers, passenger vehicles and three-wheelers from India declined by 35 per cent in February mainly due to the weakening of currencies against the US dollar in destination countries, especially in theAfricancontinent.

The exports of two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and three-wheelersfromIndiadecreasedby35%inFebruary.This decline was primarily attributed to the depreciation of currencies in the destination countries against the US dollar, particularlyintheAfricancontinent.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) hasreleaseddatashowingadeclineinexportsoftwo-wheelers,

passenger vehicles, and three-wheelers. The number of shipments of these vehicles decreased from 4,63,025 units in February2022to3,01,561unitslastmonth.

As per the given statement, the exports of two-wheelers witnessed a decline of 37% in February this year compared to the same period last year. The number of shipments decreased from 3,75,689 units in the year-ago period to 2,35,087 units last month. Motorcycle exports also decreased from 3,49,221 units to 2,01,097 units during the same period, indicating a drop of 42%. Total three-wheeler shipments declined by 45 per cent to 19,640 units in February from 35,997unitsinthesamemonthlastyear.
