Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Minister stated that the launch of this historic and pioneering service concretely fulfilled the commitment made by our Prime Minister during his visit to Maldives. Not only did this initiative help to cut logistics and other costs but also enhanced connectivity and reduced the time taken to transport goods between our two countries Hon’ble Minister further stated that this service added a new chapter to connectivity initiatives taken by both countries in the Indian Ocean Region. m.v MSS Galena was flagged off by Hon’ble Minister at 1600 hours on 05.05.2023 at Tuticorin and commenced her first voyage with her next call scheduled at Male on 07.05.2023. The vessel sailed with 285 TEUs and cargo mix consisted of diverse commodities viz. construction material, PVC Pipes, Cement, Organic Manure, Food itemslikeVegetablesetc.

Hapag-Lloyd launches green biofuel-based transport solution

H A M B U R G : Hapag-Lloyd has announced the launch of Ship Green, a new solution for climate-friendly, biofuel-basedtransport.

Ship Green is accessible from anywhere at any time and does not require a long-term commitment, according to the German ocean carrier, which added that it can also be used as an extra service to the existing booking of costumers.

Explaining the new project Hapag-Lloyd said that by using Ship Green, customers can choose three different options that represent the different levels of the carbon dioxide (CO2e) emissions avoidance: 100%, 50% or 25% of yourshipments’ocean-legCO2eemissions.

Ship Green options are available for confirmed shipmentsonthecompany’s“OnlineBusinessSuite”.

Furthermore, at the end of every quarter, customers will receive an emissions avoidance declaration verifying thetotalemissionspreventedthroughShipGreen.

The underlying emissions avoidance calculation is based on the renowned emissions-accounting methodology of the Clean Cargo Initiative (CCI), said Hapag-Lloydinitsannouncement.

South Korea increasingly seeing India as alternative to China: Report

SEOUL: Strategic ambiguity has been South Korea’s foreign policy formula for more than a decade, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported, adding that this is because Seoul’s decision not to take a side between Washington and Beijing, given its close economic ties with China and thepresenceofUSmilitaryforcesinthe country,wasregardedasinevitable.

The continued tensions between the US and China, coupled with other external challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, high inflation and the war in Ukraine have further spurred middle-power and exportoriented South Korea to expedite the diversification of its trade and investmentportfolio.

Amid such circumstances, a series of legislative measures initiated by the Biden administration to deter China’s growth at the expense of relations with its allies has promptedSeoultoaccelerateitspivot fromBeijing,SCMPreported.

Additionally, despite China’s reopening after the pandemic, South Korea’s trade deficit with China in the first quarter of this year amounted to

USD 7.8 billion, the first such deficit since the two countries normalised diplomatic relations in 1992 causing Korean businesses to reconsider the importance of maintaining a China focus.

Against this backdrop, India has emerged as an attractive destination. Its population is expected to surpass that of China by mid-2023, making it themostpopulousnationonEarth.

What makes India more desirable isnotjustthesizeofitspopulationbut the size of its young population. Only 7 per cent of the nation is aged 65 or above, compared to China’s 14 per cent and 18 per cent in the US. The International Monetary Fund forecasts that India’s real GDP growth will reach 5.9 per cent this year, 0.7 percentage points higher thanthatofChina,SCMPreported.

Another contributing factor is Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, which aimed to position the nation as a global manufacturing hub, attract foreign investment and integrate it into global supply chains by offering incentives such as simplified

regulatory procedures and tax exemptions. Thanks to this effort, launched in 2014, annual foreign direct investment had doubled to USD 83 billion as of September 2022, according to government figures, the dailyreported.

Furthermore, the productionlinked incentive scheme that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in 2020 has been extended to eligible companies in key sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, cars and more. The scheme offers companiesincentivesof4to6percent onincrementalsalesoverabaseyear, for five years, to promote a “self-reliant”India.

Motivated by such incentives and other factors, major Korean and global companies have relocated or enhanced their manufacturing facilities in India. Samsung, beyond building the world’s largest mobile phone factory in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, announced in February that it would manufacture its entire Galaxy S23 smartphone series in India instead of importing them from itsfactoryinVietnam.

Scrapping of vehicles will reduce metals and rubber import: Nitin Gadkari

NEW DELHI: The scrapping of older vehicles is going to reduce India’s import dependence for metals such as aluminium and copper says Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Speaking at the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards in New Delhi recently, he said there is a need to develop indigenous new technologies with respect to energy, and electric highways and using wastelands from miningactivitiesinasustainableway.

Commentingontheimplementation of the vehicle scrapping policy aimed at

recycling older two and four wheelers, Gadkari said, “We have started scrappingpolicy.Therearealreadyalot of imports of aluminium and copper. Now we don’t need to import. The circulationofeconomyisimportant.”

He added that aluminium, copper, steel, rubber, and plastic can be recycled to reduce the cost of automobilecomponentsby20-25%.

It is estimated that India imports metals worth roughly $ 34.7 billion annually. China, South Korea, Japan, United Arab Emirates, and United

States are the top five sources of metals importsintoIndia.

During his speech, Gadkari reiterated that the logistic cost in India is around 14-16% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). “By new roads and changes in fuel, our target is to reduce it to 9%. This will increase our exports and is an opportunity for India,” hesaid.

Reflecting on the changing global scenario, Gadkari said that businesses now prefer India for investments as comparedwithothercountries.

US Container imports follow pre-pandemic trends

WASHINGTON : US container imports in April 2023 were significantly higherthanthepreviousmonth,tracing trends seen in the pre-pandemic market.

Imports were 9.0% higher in April 2023 than in March 2023 as volumes from China increased, according to a report from Descartes. April volumes in 2023 were down 17.8% on-year as the normalisation of the market which

unfolded in the second half of 2022 continues to show in monthly figures andon-yearcomparisons.

Imports from China were were 26.7% higher on-month at 742,692 teu, accounting for 36.8% of March US containerimports.

Descartes noted a return to prepandemic seasonality over the first four months of 2023, with imports tracking 2019levelswithina1.5%margin.

Among the top 10 US ports, imports were up 10.9% overall, led by a 54,466 teu or 19.3% increase at the Port of New York/New Jersey, followed by Savannah with a 24,923 teu or 14.6% increase.

“This growth is somewhat counterintuitive given that China volumes increased dramatically which should favor West Coast ports,” said Descartes.

The guidelines were launched by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH in the august presence of Shri Shripad Y. Naik, Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Tourism and other senior officialsoftheMinistryinNewDelhi.

Harit Sagar Guidelines - 2023 envisages ecosystem dynamics in port development, operation and maintenance while aligning with ’Working with Nature’ concept and minimizing impact on biotic components of harborecosystem.ItlaysemphasisonuseofClean/Green energy in Port operation, developing Port capabilities for storage, handling and bunkering Greener Fuels viz. Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia, Green Methanol / Ethanoletc.

'Our four major ports Deendayal Port, Visakhapatnam Port, New Mangalore Port and VOC Port are already generating renewable energy more than their demand. From now onwards our ports will be able to evaluate themselves on the environmental indicators to know their capabilityintheenvironmentalaspects.’

These Guidelines provides a framework for the Major Ports for drawing out a comprehensive action plan for achieving targeted outcomes in terms of quantified reduction in carbon emission over defined timelines, through focused implementation and close monitoring of Green Initiatives and to achieve Sustainable DevelopmentalGoals(SDG).

During the event the Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, ‘Ports are undertaking green initiatives and actively contributing to the fulfillment of the "Panchamrit" commitments announced by our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The "Harit Sagar" Guidelines-2023 provide a comprehensive framework for our Major Ports, empowering them to create a comprehensive action plan aimed at achieving quantifiable reductions in carbon emissionsoverdefinedtimelines’

The objective of guidelines is to minimize waste through Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle to attain zero waste discharge from port operations and promote monitoring, based on Environmental Performance Indicators. This also covers aspects of National Green Hydrogen Mission pertaining to ports, development of green hydrogen facility, LNG bunkering, Offshore Wind Energy etc and provides provision for adopting global GreenReportingInitiative(GRI)standard.

‘ThelaunchoftheHaritSagarGreenPortGuidelinesis a significant step towards achieving our sustainability goals.Theseguidelineshavebeenformulatedwiththeaim of promoting environmental friendly practices across all ourPorts,saidShriShripadNaik,MoS,MoPSWduringthe event.

Shri Sudhansh Pant, Secretary, MoPSW said,

The Major Ports were conferred awards for their all time best performance on select operational and financial parameters during FY - 2022-23. Ports having registered highest incremental improvements were also honored and they were ranked on the basis of their overall performance during 2022-23. The idea is to generatefairandhealthycompetitionamongsttheMajor ports & motivate them to perform better & better in the comingyear.

The award for the best Absolute Performance for the year 2022-23 conferred to the Deendayal Port, Kandla for handling highest cargo of 137.56 MMT. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port received award for achieving major milestone in Turn Around Time while Paradip Port got performance shield on Ship Berth Day Output. The Kamarajar Port got recognized in pre-berthing detention time while Cochin Port received performance shield in turn-around-time (non-containerport).
