NEW DELHI: Prime Minister
Shri Narendra Modi congratulated British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on assuming charge and a remarkable victoryofhisLabourPartyintheelection, PM Modi on July 6 spoke to newly elected British PM as the two leaders agreed to work towards an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-U.K. Free TradeAgreement, astatementsaid.
The ministry of external affairs, in a statement, said that during the conversation, both leaders recalled the historic relations between the two
countries and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen and advance the comprehensive strategic partnershipbetweenIndiaandtheUK.
“The two leaders agreed to work towards an early conclusion of a mutually beneficialIndia-UKfreetradeagreement. Appreciating the positive contributions of the Indian community to the social, economicandpoliticaldevelopmentofthe UK, the two sides agreed to continue to promote close people-to-people ties… Both leaders agreed to remain in touch,” theforeignministrystatementadded.
Modi also extended an invitation to Starmer for an early visit to India as the two leaders agreed to remain in touch, the statement said. After the conversation, Modi, in a post on X, wrote, “Pleased to speak with @Keir_Starmer. Congratulated him on being elected as the Prime Minister of the UK. We remain committed to deepening comprehensive strategic partnership and robust India-UK economic ties for the progress and prosperity of our people and the global good.”
MUMBAI: The two liquid cargo berths that are under development by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) will become fully operational within the next six months, ShriUnmeshWagh,IRS,Chairman,JNPA was recently quotedassaying.
“We are very short of liquid cargo berths. There is a lot of waiting involved for ships as a result. But now we are adding two berths and they will be fully operational within six months,” he says. The Navi Mumbai port currently handles about 6.5 million tonnes per annum of liquid cargo atthetwoexistingliquidcargoberths.
To help meet the growth in demand for liquid cargo handling, JNPA used internal funding sources to invest Rs. 225 crore to develop two more berths on an
Engineering, Procurement andConstruction(EPC)basis.
“The new berths are already catering to edible oil cargo. But in the next six months we will complete the installation of all arms for cargo handling, as also other construction activities. The capacity constraint will be takencareof,”ShriWaghadds.
JSW Infrastructure
Limited has emerged as the top bidder for operating the two new berths, No. 3 and 4, and has quoted a royalty of Rs. 252 per tonne. The estimated capital expenditure for the operator is Rs. 69 crore; a concession agreement was signedwiththeprivateplayeronApril. Cont’d. Pg. 4
SINGAPORE: Global container port congestion is now around 9 million TEU, close to the peak of 9.6 million TEU seen during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a Clarksonsreport.
The world’s largest shipbroker said in a report that the RedSeacrisis, whichhasseencontainervesselsdetouring roundtheCapeofGoodHope,hasaddedcirca12%toTEUmile demand. Clarksons analyst Trevor Crowe wrote: “It has been a better than expected year so far for trade volumes – this has helped drive markets to exceptional
levelsonceagain.”Henotedthattheriseincongestionhas emerged from the impacts on port infrastructure and logistics of vessel re-routing, amplified by strong year-todate global trade volumes, which have grown 8% year-onyearfromJanuarytoApril.
There has also been a psychological factor, as shippers anticipating tightening shipping and equipment availability during the 3Q peak season, have rushed to move their exports in May and June, causing the peak seasontoarriveearly. Cont’d. Pg. 4
Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The additional berths are set to alleviate the pressure on the existing liquid jetties, and cutvesselwaitingtimeanddemurragecosts.
Designed for larger vessels with expanded parcel sizes, the new berths also promise to boost cargo volumes. During the first quarter of financial year 2024-25, JNPA handled 14,88,295 tonnes of liquid cargo, atadlowerthan14,98,625tonnesayearago.
MSC’s market share now at 20% as eet nears 6 million
GENEVA: MSC now has a market share of 20%, as its aggressive newbuilding drive and ship purchases placed the largest liner operator’s fleet at just under 6millionTEUs.
Alphaliner’s report stated that MSC’s fleet now stands at 837 ships of 5.98 million TEUs, putting the Swiss-Italian operator “one big ship delivery” away from hitting the 6 million TEU mark. These include 539 owned shipsofnearly3millionTEUs.
MSC’sstrategyhasmadeitgrowfasterthananyofits peers, enabling it to overtake Maersk Line as the largest operatorin2022.
Ironically,MSC’slatestpurchase,thatofthe9,600TEU MSCNicoleX(exA.P.Moller),helpedbringitsfleetcloseto the 6 million TEU mark. Originally constructed as an 8,200 TEU ship in Odense Shipyard in 2000, A.P.MollerwasupsizedinChinain2011,whenMaerskLine embarkedonitsTriple-Enewbuildingconstructionspree.
Fromthecompany’slaunchin1970,ittookMSCsome 37 years to reach a fleet capacity of 1 million TEUs in January 2007; its fleet doubled in July 2011. The 3 million
TEU milestone followed in May 2017, and the 4 million TEU in July 2021 half a year before MSC surpassed Maersk.
MSC’s fleet reached 5 million TEUs in May 2023 and the carrier is expected to hit 6 million TEUs before the endofthemonth.
While MSC has been scrapping vessels, having torched seven elderly ships of 14,000 TEUs so far in 2024, this pales in comparison to the 28 newbuildings, amounting to 324,000 TEUs, that the operator has receivedoverthesameperiod.
Alphaliner noted that while MSC and Maersk will dissolvetheir2MallianceinJanuary2025,MSCfleetasa solo operator will still outnumber that of the incoming Gemini Cooperation to be formed by Maersk and Hapag-Lloydthefollowingmonth.
MSC’s orderbook stands at 99 vessels of 1.19 million TEUs, meaning its fleet could grow to 7.17 million TEUs. Based on current fleet sizes and including newbuildings, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will have a combinedfleetof7.08millionTEUs.
BEIJING: COSCO SHIPPING Lines and GSBN have been collaborating to launch HI-ECO, a blockchain based shipping product. This innovation providestraceableandverifiablegreencertificates to accelerate global trade decarbonization.
GSBN utilizes its blockchain network to store Proof of Sustainability (PoS) for biofuels, ensuring that each green certificate accurately corresponds to the actual use of purchased biofuels and enhancing market confidence. In addition, customers and counterparties can use GSBN to verify the authenticity of green certificates, fostering trust among all parties involved in the transportationprocess.
Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Knock-on impacts evolving from liner company service re-scheduling include equipment displacement bottlenecks.
Clarksons’ global containership port congestion index shows that the percentage of boxships waiting in port has gone up from 27.5% in late February to 31% in lateJune.
Crowewrote:“ThoughthisiswellbelowtheCovid-era highs of 37%, and disruption today is maybe not as pervasive through the whole network as back then, trends in the index need to be put into context. Liner service patterns have shifted significantly since late 2023, with re-routing over longer distances reducing the ‘normal’ share of time/capacity in port (meanwhile total
containership fleet capacity is up 19% versus start of 2022).”
A reasonable estimate could be that congestion is currentlytyingup3%to4%ofthefleet,comparedwith6% to7%duringthepandemic.
EconDB’s data shows that at the port of Singapore, the busiest container port in the world, 61% of calls have been delayed over the past week. Transshipped and outbound containers have a dwell time of around 10 days.
Concerned with the situation, Singapore’s Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and port operator PSA are workingwithlineroperatorstohavetheirshipsrefuelled andrestockedwhilewaitingtoberth.
SINGAPORE: PSA
Singapore, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and Chiyoda Corporation have begun testing the ways in which hydrogen can be transported and stored as methylcyclohexane (MCH), a liquid form at ambient temperature and pressure, before gaseous hydrogen is extracted from MCH to be used as a clean fuel for horizontaltransportationintheport.
For this collaborative trial that aims to test the practical storage and dehydrogenation of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) in an industrial setting, PSA Singapore is responsible for the construction, commissioning, operation, and maintenanceofthehydrogenrefuellingfacility.Sofar, PSA Singapore has built and initiated operations of the first hydrogen refuelling station and provided a hydrogen fuel cell electric prime mover at Pasir PanjangTerminal.
PSA International Regional CEO Southeast Asia Nelson Quek said: “In collaboration with likeminded industry partners, we are excited to commissionthefirsthydrogenrefuellingfacilityinthe port, a significant step forward in our efforts to develop a hydrogen refuelling ecosystem in Singapore. PSA will continue to seek potential technologies and actively test-bed low-carbon, innovative sustainability solutions that can be deployed beyond the industry, as we strive to collectively decarbonise and drive greener outcomes acrosstheentirevaluechain.”

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat informed parliament in his recent written response that around 90% of container vessels are arriving off-schedule in Singapore due to the Red Sea crisis, contrasting with approximately77%in2023.
The crisis in the Red Sea has compelled ships to take longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope between Europe and Asia. Consequently, ports globally are witnessing an increase in
off-schedule arrivals, as highlighted byCheeinhisstatement.
As explained, Singapore serves as a crucial transhipment hub for shipping lines to reorganize containers and streamline operations. These adjustments have prolongedthedurationthatcontainer ships remain in port and escalated waiting times for incoming vessels, leading to congestion at container terminals, theministernoted.
Moreover,manyvesselsarearriving within a condensed timeframe,
exacerbating the issue by causing a clusteringeffect,Cheeadded.
To address these challenges, port management authorities have reactivated additional berths and yard space, with plans to further expand handling capacity in the coming months to manage anticipateddemand.
DuringtheperiodfromJanuaryto May this year, container throughput in Singapore rose by 7.7 percent to 16.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units(TEUs).

NEW DELHI: In the wake of the Red Sea crisis, air freight from India has more than doubled in recent months, positioning the country to meet its ambitious target of handling 10 million tonnes (MT) of air cargo by 2030-31.
According to industry experts, air freight from India has more than doubled in recent months, a trend directly attributed to the Red Sea crisis. This surge follows a period of recovery post-Covid, where air cargo volumes had already rebounded to the peak levels of 3.5 MT seen in 2017-18.
Yashpal Sharma, President of the Air Cargo Forum of India (ACFI), highlightedtwocriticalareas for improvement to maintain this momentum: reducing transshipment times and allowing foreign freighter aircraft to serve multiple Indiancitiesinasingletrip, apractice
knownas“doubledipping.”
“Less than 2 per cent of freight globallymovesbyair,”Sharmanoted at the ACFI Annual Conclave 2024. “With the Red Sea crisis, even a half percent shift will result in a significant increase in air cargo volumes.
India has a tremendous opportunity, but we must address these challenges, particularly the current 2-2.5 day trans-shipment time.”
India’sairfreightmarketpresents a unique profile, with international imports, exports, and domestic cargo each accounting for roughly a third of totalvolume.
Notably, only 15 per cent of air cargo is transported by dedicated freighter aircraft, with the remainder carried in the belly of passenger planes.
The sector has seen significant
fluctuations in recent years. PiyushSrivastava,SeniorEconomic Advisor in the aviation ministry, reported that the number of freighter aircraft in India rose from 6 pre-Covid to 28 during the pandemic, before settlingatthecurrentfleetof18.
“The Government facilitated the conversion of passenger aircraft to freighters, and numerous steps have been taken to boost the sector. However, to compete with rail and road transport, we must streamline processes and improve turnaround times”,Srivastavaexplained.
Despite these positive trends, there’s still room for growth. Surendra Kumar, Joint Secretary (logistics and trade) at DPIIT, revealed that while 70 airports have cargo facilities, many are underutilised due to inadequate integration with other transport modes.
NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways
Shri Nitin Gadkari recently announced that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi would inaugurate the Chennai-Bengaluru ExpresswaybeforeDecember.
Addressing a session in Bengaluru, Mr. Gadkari said it would be possible to reach Bengaluru from Chennai within two hours on this highway. Earlier he announced that the estimated time of completion was March 2024 and the 262 km-long expressway is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to onlytwohours.
Gadkari also stated that he will make efforts to complete the Rs 17,000 crore-worth Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project in KarnatakabyDecemberend.
Gadkari said he urged Karnataka Chief Minister
Shri Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister
Shri DK Shivakumar during a meeting in New Delhi to ensure smooth environmental clearances and land acquisition in the state to expedite road infrastructure projects.

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) successfully organized a pivotal workshop on the Revitalizing Indian Ship Building Industry, chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), ShriTKRamachandran.
The event brought together key stakeholders, representatives from various Government ministries, departments, shipping operators and PSU/ private sector shipyards to discuss strategies for revitalizing the shipbuilding and repair ecosystem within India and aligning it with India's ambitious Maritime India Vision 2030 (MIV 2030) and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.

‘’Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister, India is set to become a global economic superpower, with a robust maritime sector playing a crucial role in this journey. Atma Nirbharta emphasize self-reliance, extending to the shipping and shipbuilding industries. Despite efforts and developments in port infrastructure and inland waterways, we remain dependent on foreign vessels and have yet to capture a significant share of the global shipbuilding market. Recognizing this, the Ministry is now focusing on enhancing our shipbuilding, and ship repair infrastructure to meet the ambitious goals of MIV 2030 and MAKV 2047. Through this interactive workshop, MoPSW aims to present specific policies based on stakeholder inputs and invite further valuable contributions to drive demand and capacity growth in these sectors’, Shri TK Ramachandran, Secretary ofMoPSW.
The presentation made by the Ministry highlighted the growing trend of the Indian overseas and coastal cargo, while at the same time highlighting that the share of the cargo carried by Indian owned/ flagged vessels has been dropping over the past decade and presently stand at only about 5.4%. If there is no initiative undertaken, then this share may fall further, resulting in Indian owned/ Indian built ships having no play even in India’s own shipping market.
Furthermore, owning of the fleet needed for national trade brings with it several key advantages in terms of availability of fleet in times of crisis, protection against embargos and protection of India’s valuable foreign exchange reserves which is presently being spent on chartering and freight management charges to foreign nations.
Atthesame, time, ifthetremendousdemandstemming from the needs of the Indian shipping market are adequately targeted by Indian shipyards, it may result in an opportunity to the extent of over USD 237 billion (INR20lakhcrores)by2047.
The workshop was attended by more than 100 participants from 50 organisations including various government ministries, departments, shipping operators and PSU/ private sector shipyards. Viz., Ministry of Defence; Ministry of Coal; DG Shipping, Shipyards Association of India; National Centre of Excellence in Green Port and Shipping; Royal IHC Netherland; HPCL; Indian Oil Corporation Limited; GAIL; Garden Reach Shipyard; Indian National Ship Owners’ Association; Hindustan Shipyard Limited; Ministry of Petrol and NaturalGas;DredgingCorporationofIndiaLimitedetc.
The idea of the event was to bring the demand generators and the suppliers/builders onto a collaborative common platform to formulate ideas to ensure that the
In the event, the stakeholders deliberated upon the limitations of Indian shipyards, the incentives needed, both on supply and demand sides and the assistance that could be provided by the MoPSW to facilitate the same. The inputs and insights that have been received from the distinguished voices of the Industry were noted and the Ministry hopes to address the various issues that were raised, incorporate them into their 100 days agenda and suitably help develop and nurture the ecosystem and achievetheambitioustargetsofMIV2030,ofmakingIndia one of the top 10 ship building nations by 2030, and one of thetop5countriesinshipbuildingby2047.
Inthepast,MoPSWhasendeavoredtoaidthegrowthof shipbuilding and ship repair industry through schemes such as Shipbuilding Financial Assistant Policy, Right of First Refusal (ROFR) policy, according Infrastructure status to shipyards, etc. Despite these measures, commercial shipbuilding in India, has still not reached a position of strength compared to global shipbuilding majors, accounting for less than 1% of the global shipbuilding market, largely on account of lack of demand. Consequently, MoPSW is examining the policy measures to strengthen demand creation domestically given our requirementtostrengthenourdomesticfleets.
Notable advancements made in the development of indigenous low-emission or zero-emission ships/vessels by Indian shipbuilding companies showcase our potential to lead the world in safe sustainable and green shipbuilding. MoPSW is working on an integrated approach to bringing together shipbuilding stakeholders throughthedevelopmentofMaritimeClusters.
AligningwiththeMaritimeIndiaVision2030(MIV2030) and the Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, the workshop emphasized the importance of these visionary frameworks in driving India's maritime growth. MIV 2030 has set a bold target to elevate India's global ranking in shipbuilding and ship repair from over 20th place to the top 10 and an ambitious goal has been set for the top 5 position, as outlined in the AmritKaalVision2047.AnothermajortargetunderMAKV 2047ishandling1300MMTPAofcoastalcargocarriageand greater proportion of Indian overseas cargo to be carried out on Indian owned/ Indian built ships. To achieve these targets MoPSW seeks to Develop capabilities and evolve sector to global competence; Adopt global best practices, processes and technologies foreign; Protect exchange reserves; Drive Industry sustainability and green initiatives;Expandshipbuildingcapacity.
This strategic vision reflects the government's commitment to transforming India into a global maritime powerhouse. This ambitious goal is part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance the country's maritimeinfrastructureandcapabilities.
