Rupee Depreciation: A Complex Challenge, Not a Simple Export Boost – FIEO President
N E W D E L H I :
The President of FIEO, Mr Ashwani Kumar, stated that the recent depreciation of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar represents a complex economic scenario with mixed outcomes While it is often assumed that a weaker Rupee boosts exports by m a k i n g I n d i a n g o o d s m o r e competitive globally, the reality is far more nuanced, said Mr Kumar.
Mr Kumar highlighted that currency depreciation is relative If the Indian Rupee depreciates by 2% w h i l e t h e c u r r e n c i e s o f k e y competitors decline by 3-5%, Indian exporters lose competitiveness in global markets This relative disadvantage erodes any potential price advantage Indian goods might gain.
The depreciation also results in:
1. Increased Input Costs: Many Indian exporters depend on imported raw materials and components A weaker Rupee significantly raises
these input costs, often nullifying the perceived benefits of depreciation.
2. Exchange Rate Volatility: Fluctuating exchange rates create uncertainty, making it difficult for exporters to price their products competitively and plan for the long term.
3. Inationar y Pressures:
Depreciation inflates the cost of i m p o r t e d g o o d s l i k e o i l a n d commodities, driving up production costs and fueling domestic inflation. This reduces consumer purchasing power and negatively impacts overall economic growth.
4 External Debt Burden:
A depreciating Rupee increases the cost of servicing foreign currencydenominated external debt, creating additional pressure on businesses and the government.
FIEO President emphasized that a weaker Rupee is not a one-size-fitsall solution to boost exports. A strategic, multi-pronged approach is needed to address the root causes of depreciation while mitigating its
adverse effects. This includes:
*
production quality, reducing reliance on imports, and fostering innovation.
* Attracting Foreign Investment: Establishing a stable and investorfriendly environment to encourage long-term capital inflows.
* C o n t r o l l i n g I n f l a t i o n : Implementing effective monetary and fiscal measures to stabilize prices.
* Diversifying Export Markets: Reducing over-dependence on a few markets to buffer against global economic shocks.
While a weaker Rupee may offer limited short-term benefits for exporters, it is not a silver bullet for e c o n o m i c g r o w t h M r
concluded by stressing that Rupee d
b y a combination of issues requiring a balanced and well-considered a p p r o a
. A d d r e s s i n g t h e s e challenges strategically will be key to ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth for India.

producer, shipped 2.1 million metric tons of finished steel to India during April-December, up 13 3% year-onyear, the data showed.
Beijing was the top exporter of finished steel to India during the period.
Shipments from China, South
Korea and Japan accounted for 79% of India's overall finished steel imports during the period.

Union Minister unveils National Capital Goods Policy
BENGALURU: Union Minister for H e a v y I n d u s t r i e s a n d S t e e l HD Kumaraswamy unveiled the National Capital Goods Policy 2025 during the IMTEX 2025 inauguration in Bengaluru.
The policy aims to strategically position India as a global leader in manufacturing, with a comprehensive f r a m e w o r k d e s i g n e d t
i m p o r t dependencies, and enhance industrial competitiveness.
Karnataka’s Large and Medium Industries Minister MB Patil provided a compelling outlook for the machine tool industry, projecting revenues to reach USD 3.8 billion by 2030.
Currently ranking 9th globally in production and 7th in consumption, the sector generated over USD 2.2 billion in revenue in 2022. Notably, Karnataka
emerges as a critical hub, accounting for 52 per cent of India’s total machine tool production and hosting major industry players like ABB, Siemens, BHEL, and Larsen & Toubro.
Despite optimistic projections, the i
challenges, particularly in technological self-sufficiency In fiscal year 2023-24, machine tool imports surged to over Rs 40,000 crore, up from Rs 35,460 crore in the previous year
A recent Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Ministry report highlights structural impediments, including insufficient infrastructure, skilled workforce shortages, and limited investment from larger enterprises.
To address these challenges, the government has implemented strategic interventions, such as the s
competitiveness in the Indian capital goods sector
Launched in 2022, this initiative focuses on technology upgradation, skill development, and infrastructure
manufacturing capabilities.
The National Capital Goods Policy 2025 represents a pivotal moment for India’s industrial strategy, balancing
pragmatic measures to overcome
infrastructural limitations.
As the nation continues to position itself in the global manufacturing arena, c
government, industry, and educational institutions will be crucial in realising these transformative objectives.
Adani seeks partial de-notification of Mundra SEZ
A H M E D A B A D :
Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd has approached the Centre f o r p a r t i a l d enotification of its multi-product SEZ in Mundra, Gujarat.
The proposal will be discussed in the meeting of the Board of Approval, the highest decision-making body for special economic zones (SEZs). The board, headed by Commerce S e c r e t a r y S u n i l B a r t h w a l , will meet soon
“Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) Ltd has requested for partial de-notification of 333.7396 out of 8282.7670 Ha. As regards reasons, the developer has submitted that due to stiff competition in the solar market a n d s e v e r e d u m p i n g o f s o l a r equipment into India, the units in EMC (Electronics Manufacturing Cluster) are becoming economically unviable within the SEZ,” according to the agenda of the meeting.
To survive in this difficult market, it has become essential for these units to exit from SEZ, it noted.
“In view of this, the constituent units in the EMC area have desired not to continue their operations in SEZ format. Hence, the co-developer, Mundra Solar Technopark has requested the developer to de-notify the EMC area from SEZ on the as-iswhere-is basis,” the proposal said.
Gujarat has given no objection to the proposal and requested to process the application of partial de-notification, it said. The development commissioner of APSEZ has also requested the board to consider this proposal.
As per the SEZ Rules, 2006, the central government may — on the recommendation of the Board on the application made by the developer, if it is satisfied, modify — withdraw or rescind the notification of a SEZ.
Further, the inter-ministerial board would also take up a proposal of Mundra Petrochem Ltd, APSEZ,
Mundra for a grant of LOA (letter of approval) extension for one year
While the LOA was issued in December 2021, due to the COVID pandemic and other issues, the start of the project and commissioning were rescheduled, the agenda said, adding that now, the project activities are progressing in full swing.
SEZs are key export hubs, which contributed over one-third of the country’s total outbound shipments in the last fiscal.
These zones are enclosures that are treated as foreign territories for trade and customs duties, with restrictions on duty-free sales outside these zones in the domestic market.
As many as 423 such zones have been approved by the government, out of which 280 are operational. As many as 5,711 units are approved in these zones.
Exports from these zones rose by over 4 per cent to USD 163.69 billion in 2023-24.
Rupee’s fall all due to dollar’s rise, any RBI intervention can harm Indian exports :
DAVOS: Attributing the fall in Indian rupee solely to the US dollar getting stronger, former Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan has said any intervention by the RBI on this can end up harming Indian e x p o r t s e v e n a s h e u r g e d policymakers to focus on creating more jobs and boosting household consumption.
Asked what the second term of US President Donald Trump means for the global and Indian economy, Rajan said, “I think it means uncertainty P r e s i d e n t Tr u m p d u r i n g h i s campaign laid out a bunch of policies and measures that he wants to implement.”.
“We are seeing some of them being
Raghuram Rajan
implemented We have to see how intensely, for example the policy on immigration and trade and tariff proposals against whom and against which sectors are implemented. As of now what and how all this will pan out,” the eminent economist said.
On appreciation in the US dollar and its impact on other currencies especially in emerging markets including rupee, Rajan said the dollar has been appreciating against other currencies, partly due to fear of Trump tariffs.
“If he imposes tariffs, it is going to decrease US imports from other countries, narrowing the current account deficit and the trade deficit. So, from that perspective, it means
that the US needs to import less and so dollar will strengthen because there would be fewer dollars in the rest of the world So, that is the straight forward reason,” the former IMF Chief Economist said.
“There is also a view that the US is becoming more attractive as an investment venue because the people who can’t export to the US will move their production to the US. Also, you are seeing more capital flowing into the US and that is also leading to a s t o c k m a r k e t b o o m a n d a l s o strengthening the dollar,” he said.
All these reasons, along with the US economy growing very strongly, are leading to a stronger dollar, he added.
India’s Exports to US up 5.57% to $60 billion in April-December FY25
NEW DELHI: The country’s exports rose by 5 57 per cent to USD 59 93 billion during April-December this fiscal on account of healthy demand in the American market for domestic goods, according to government data. During December, the shipments increased by 8.49 per cent t o USD 7 billion, the data showed
On the other hand, imports during the first nine months of 2024-25 grew by 1.91 per cent to USD 33.4 billion, while in December it was up by 9.88 per cent to USD 3.77 billion.
According to experts, going by the trend, the total trade between the two countries will continue to grow in the coming months also.
T
g April-December 2024-25 stood at USD 93.4 billion, as against USD 94.6 billion between India and China.
The experts added that the possible trade war between the US and China will give huge export potential for Indian exporters.
The US is the largest trading partner of India from 2021-22. The US accounts for about 18 per cent of India’s total goods exports and over 6 per cent in imports and about 11 per cent in bilateral trade.
Some experts raised concerns that if the US would impose additional
duties on certain Indian goods, as threatened by US President Donald Trump, it can impact trade.
In December last year, Trump had said India charges “a lot” of tariffs, reiterating his intention to impose reciprocal tariffs in retaliation for what New Delhi will impose on the import of certain American products.
“India should respond firmly and in equal measure,” economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI)FounderAjaySrivastavasaid In 2018, when the US taxed Indian steel and aluminium, India retaliated by raising tariffs on 29 US products, recovering equivalent revenue.
