Container rates to stabilise soon: Vikas Agarwal, MD, Maersk South Asia

MUMBAI: Global container rates are expected to stabilise shortly, after a steep fall earlier this year, according to Vikas Agarwal, ManagingDirector,SouthAsia, forglobalshippingand logistics rm Maersk. He was recently quoted as saying that softening economies and inflationary pressure are some of the impediments in Global trade. But there is a concerted push towards mitigating risk by widening supplychains, hesaid.

COPENHAGEN: Schedule reliability remained unchanged M/M in July 2023 at 64.2%, maintaining the slightly lower level than the peak reached in May 2023.

On a Y/Y level however, schedule reliability in July 2023 is still 23.8 percentage points higher. The average delay for LATE vessel arrivals on the other hand deteriorated by 0.21daysM/Mto4.59days. Cont’d.

“We clearly see there is a soft market at the moment given the demand slowing down. The western economies are suffering; diversification of the supply chain is what mostofthecustomersarelookingatfromariskmitigation perspective,”Agarwalwasquoted.

“Post-Covid this is an opportunity for consumers to rethinksupplychainsandfuturesupplies.Thisiswhereall lot of resetting is going to happen. Now, whether India, Vietnam or African nations gain, a shift is definitely going tohappen,”hesaid.

Adani looking for Greek Ports to serve as gateway for Indian exports bound for Europe

NEW DELHI: The Adani Group may belookingattakingoveraGreekportand turning it into a key gateway for Indian exportstoEurope.

Reporting on Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s one-day visit last week, a Greek newsportal,theEnglish-languageGreekCityTimes,and other local media said among the subjects discussed in official talks was the possibility of Adani taking an interestinatleastoneport–ormaybemore.

The two ports mentioned were Kavala in northern Greece and Volos, which lies 330km from Athens. The portal also suggested Adani may be interested in a thirdport,Alexandroupoli.

Modi emphasised during his Greek visit last Friday that he considers Greece to be an essential economic, transport and strategic gateway of India to the EU and talkedabout“greatopportunities”onbothsides.

The English-language Greek City Times, quoting unnamed sources, said during talks between Modi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis the Indian leader “expressed the country’s interest in acquiring portsinGreece”

There also has been talk in local Greek media that India may also be exploring the possibility of using Greece’s Port of Piraeus near Athens for its European exports. But the rub there is that the facility is Chinesecontrolled.China’sCOSCOShippingismajority-ownerof thePiraeusPortwitha67-per-centshareholding.

China has turned Piraeus into the largest port in the region.XiJinpingvisitedtheportin2019anddescribedit as an, “Important hub for China’s fast land-sea link with Europe, andforconnectivitybetweenAsiaandEurope.”

Kavala in northern Greece is the principal port in the

eastern Macedonia region and serves parts of the Balkans. It is also a take-off point for ferries that operate tonearbyislands.Itwouldprobablyneedtobeexpanded considerably for it to serve as a gateway into Europe for Indian consignments. If India does pick up one or more ports, Greek City Times said that, “Greece would officiallybecomeIndia’scentraltransithubtoEurope.”

The two leaders also looked at increasing tourism from India. In addition, they also looked at the possibility of having an “interstate agreement” to bring in skilled and unskilled personnel from India to tackle Greece’s labourshortages.

Greece is a member of the European Union (EU), soanyagreementsonlabourandpersonnelwouldhave to fit the wider organisation’s rules on personnel workinginthecountry.TheGreekCityTimessaidModi pointed to India’s huge middle class and also the rising number of billionaires and other such wealthy individuals. The two sides have agreed to upgrade ties towhattheydescribedasa“StrategicPartnership”and also double two-way trade by 2030. Two-way trade is currentlyat$2billion.

Overthelastdecade,Indiahasboostedrelationswith Greece as its interests expand from the Indian Ocean to theEasternMediterranean.Theemerging“commercial corridor between India and Greece could radically reconfigure trade patterns between the Indian Ocean region, the Middle East, and Europe,” said Professor Michael Tanchum, who’s an international relations professoratSpain’sUniversityofNavarra.

“For India, this new connectivity constitutes a strategic paradigm shift of enormous geopolitical consequence that could reshape its role in the Eurasian economyorder,”addsTanchum.

India is the solution to Global Supply Chain issues: PM Narendra Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 27th August pitched India as a trusted partner for an efficient supply chain to the G20 business community, urging them not to look at the country just as a market to sell products. He was addressing theB20SummitIndia2023,whichis the official G20 dialogue forum with the global business community, inNewDelhi.

Whileaddressingthemeet,Modi said the world had irreversibly changedbetweenthepre-pandemic and post-pandemic times, and

India had become the face of digital revolutioninthe era of Industry4.0.

“Earlier, it was said that as long as the global supply chain is efficient, there is nothing to worry about. But can such a supply chain be called efficient when it breaks down, and that toowhentheworld needed it the most? Therefore, today when the world is grappling with this question, I assure you that the solution to this problem is India. India has an important place in building an efficient and trusted global supply chain. And for this, global businesses

will have to take up their responsibility by moving forward alongwithus,”Modiadded. Modi said treating other countries only as a market would not work but harm even the producing countries, sooner or later. “A profitable market can be sustainedwhenthereisabalancein the interests of producers and consumers. This also applies to nations. Treating other countries only as a market will never work. Makingeveryoneequalpartnersin progress is the way forward,” headded.

These projects have been recommended by the Network Planning Group (NPG) constituted under the PM Gati Shakti initiative launchedinOctober2021.

The NPG has achieved the milestone of appraising 100 projects in 54 meetings. The Inter-Ministerial NPG meets every fortnight and appraises infra projects to ensure multi-modality, synchronisation of efforts, and comprehensive development in and around the projectlocation.

The initiative was launched to develop an integrated infrastructure toreducelogisticscosts.

All logistics and connectivity infrastructure projects, entailing investments of over Rs 500 crore are routedthroughtheNPG.

The NPG’s approval is required before clearance of the project by the Public Investment Board (PIB) or Department of Expenditure under theFinanceMinistry.

The maximum number of projects recommended by the group are related to roads, railways and urban development.

A total of 40 road projects with a total investment of Rs 3.65 lakh crore, 40 railway projects worth Rs 95,704 crore and 8 urban development projects valued at Rs 79,016 crore havebeenapproved.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has planned over 1,400 kilometres of roads to date and the MinistryofRailwayshasplannedover 13,000 km of track length using the National Master Plan (NMP), Dawra said.

The NPG has representations from various connectivity infrastructure ministries/ departments involving their heads of network planning division for unified planning and integration of the proposals.

All these departments approach the NPG first for approval before making a DPR (Detailed Project Report) at the planning stage. After the NPG’s clearance, the project follows the normal procedure of approval by the finance ministry and theCabinet.

Over1,400layersofdata,including those related to land, ports, forest, and highways, are available on the portal.

Usage of the portal by different Ministries, including Social Sector Departments and States, are increasing and it is helping in proper planningofprojects, shesaid.

Adani Hazira Port sets extra costs on CFS for import box nomination

AHMEDABAD:

Adani Hazira Port Pvt Ltd (HPPL), a unit of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), which runs the port at Hazira in Gujarat, said it will collect extra charges of Rs2,500 for a 20 ft container and Rs4,000 for 40

and 45 ft boxes from container freight station (CFS) operators when import loaded containers are taken to a CFS as nominated by thelines.

The new charge, which will come into force from 8 September, has been decried by firms running CFS’s in and around Hazira Port.

Stating that it was an “arbitrary charge” being imposed by Hazira port, the Container Freight Stations Association of India (CFSAI), a lobby group for CFS operators, described the new levy as an “abuse of dominant position” by India’s biggest private port operator.

India and Singapore executes their inaugural live paperless transaction using the Trade Trust platform

Assam also sends first-ever air cargo shipment of fresh fruits to Singapore

GUWAHATI: In a momentous development that signifies a noteworthy stride in the bilateral trade partnership between India and Singapore. Simon Wong, the Singapore High Commissioner to India has declared the successful completion of the inaugural air cargo shipment of fruits from the northeasternIndianstateofAssamto Singapore. This milestone accomplishment has laid the foundation for establishing a direct agro-export conduit from the Northeast region of India to Singapore, ultimately contributing to economic advancement while bolstering the bonds between the two countries.

Expressing his delight, High Commissioner Wong took to his social media platform ‘X’ to share the exciting news: “I am happy to announcethefirstaircargoshipment of fruits from Assam to Singapore. This will establish a direct agroexport source from the NE to Singapore. We thank Honorable

ChiefMinisterHimantaBiswaSarma forthispioneerinitiative.–HCWong.”

In response to the announcement by the High Commissioner, the Assam Chief Minister’s office issued its own statement, elaborating on the array of homegrown produce that has successfully traversed the distance to Singapore. The statement highlighted that Assam’s indigenous Pineapples, Kaji Lemons, Plums, Jackfruits, and Starfruits have been directly transported to Singapore’s markets from Guwahati, utilizing a newly established air cargo route aimed at enhancingagriculturalexports.

Highlighting Assam’s significant role in fruit production, it’s worth noting that in the fiscal year 2020-21, the state achieved a remarkable feat by producing a total of 338.98 metric tons of Pineapples. This noteworthy accomplishment constituted a substantial 18.75% share of India’s overall pineapple production, thereby securing Assam’s position as the second-largest producer of pineapples in the country. Notably,

this achievement builds upon Assam’s previous success in venturing into pineapple exports to Dubaiin2019.

Adding to these developments, an additional noteworthy event unfolded on the same day. India and Singapore jointly marked a milestone by executing their inaugural live paperlesstransactionusingtheTrade Trust platform. This accomplishment standsasasignificantleapforwardin digital connectivity between the two nations. Moreover, it underscores the sharedcommitmentofbothcountries toharnesstechnologicalinnovationto transform and elevate their trade practices.

High Commissioner Wong once again shared the milestone on his social media, remarking, “Following the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable & the meeting with PMModi, wehavepilotedthefirstlive paperlesstransactionusingtheTrade Trust platform. Turning away from open trade risks price volatility, weaker growth : DG WTO

GENEVA: Speaking at the annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, the Director-General said predictable trade is a source of disinflationary pressure, reduced volatility, and increased economic resilience whereas fragmentation of trade into rivalblocs“wouldbeverycostly.”

“A world that turns its back on openandpredictabletradewillbeone marked by diminished competitive pressures and greater price volatility,” the Director-General warned. “It would be a world of weaker growth and development prospects, a slower low-carbon transition, and increased supply vulnerabilityinthefaceofunexpected shocks.”

“Falling trade costs for goods and especially for services mean that globalizationcanstillbeanenginefor increased growth, efficiency, and

economic opportunities, while also contributingtopricemoderation,”the Director-Generaldeclared.

In particular, increased digitalization and trade in services boosted by initiatives such as the agreement on Services Domestic Regulation, concluded by WTO members accounting for over 90percent percentofglobalservices trade, and the ongoing talks on electronic commerce now being negotiated among 90 WTO members, “could become a powerful disinflationaryforce,”shenoted.

“Seizing these opportunities requires open and predictable international markets, anchored in a strong and effective rules-based multilateraltradingsystem.”

Rather than deglobalization, “there is a strong case for diverting some of the energy behind reshoring to re-globalizing production instead,” she told the Symposium. Some

evidenceofre-globalizationisalready visible with countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Romania, Morocco, and Turkey sharply increasing their participation in value chains across a rangeofgoodsandservices.

“Today, as businesses recalibrate how they think about scale efficiencies versus concentration risks, they have an opportunity to bolster supply chain resilience by taking this diversification process further, to encompass more places in Africa, Asia and Latin America that have good macroeconomic fundamentalsbutremainstuckonthe margins of the global division of labour.”

“Re-globalization is a far better alternative,” DG Okonjo-Iweala told the gathered economic leaders. “I ask all of you to speak up for open trade, multilateral cooperation, and the WTO. Doing so might even end up makingyourjobsabiteasier.”
