India's Exports increased despite recession, registering lowest ination, says Piyush Goyal

COIMBATORE: India's exports increased to 776 billion USD from 500 billion, two years ago, and this spectacular growth was achieved notwithstanding the recession, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the difficult pandemic times, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said recently. This remarkable achievement in two years was due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who felt that both the Centreandstategovernmentsshould collectively work in the spirit of cooperative federalism for the better future of all the citizens, he said while

addressing the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI's) 11thAsianTextileConference,here.

"Last year was a difficult period. Everybody felt that exports could not be sustained. But after growing from 500 billion dollars to 675 billion dollars in 2021-22, our exports rose to 776 billion dollars from 675 in 2022-23," hesaidandaddedthatthiswasarecord achievement registered in two years' time. "The Covid has not yet gone and despite the Russia-Ukraine war, India was the fastest growing economy, the fifth largest in terms of the size of GDP. The country was able to maintain

thelowestinflation,"hesaid.

Later, speaking to reporters the Minister said the world was going through challenging times with the US, Europe and all other developed nations facingdepressionandrecession.

"EvenChinahasseenafallintheir economic activity. In this situation, I am very proud that our textile industry continues to hold firm and continues to do good work. I have no doubt in my mind that in the future also we will regain the lost glory of India, the lost glory of textile sector of India and Tamil Nadu will be in the forefrontofit,"Goyalsaid.

Global rice exports could fall 4% due to India’s export restrictions

OSLO: Global rice exports could fall by at least 4%in2023becauseofIndia’srestrictionsonexports and El Niño’s impact on supply. Replacing India’s rice exports is challenging, as India accounts for almost 40% of theworld’sexportofrice.LowrainfallcausedbyElNiñoisalso weakeningtheoutlookforglobalriceexportsin2024.

To combat inflation and high domestic food prices, the Indian government has gradually restricted rice exports. In July 2023, the Indian government expanded its previous export ban on broken rice to include all non-basmati white rice. This caused global rice prices to rally to their highest level in over a decade. Last week, a minimum price for basmati rice exports was imposed and export duties were added to parboiled rice exports, which could further inflate globalriceprices.

Despite concerns that other rice exporters would follow India’s export restrictions, so far only Myanmar has imposed

a temporary 45-day ban on exports. Due to the higher prices, otherexporterssuchasThailand,Vietnam, andPakistanhave insteadincreasedexports. However, thishasnotbeenenough tosubstituteIndia’sreduction.

While rice constitutes under 1% of dry bulk cargo, India’s export restrictions will add further pressure to the alreadytightglobalgrainsupplies.Overall, weestimateglobal grainshipmentswillfallbetween1.5%and2.5%in2023.

Rice is transported by smaller bulk ships in the handysize and supramax segments. Compared to other bulk commodities, rice export volumes are small and there are no large import countries. Due to the lower volume transported to most destinations, rice can also be transported in containers.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), global rice exports could decline by an additional 3% in2024.

Global manufacturers aim to turn India into an Export hub

NEW DELHI: Global automakers are looking to turn India into an export hub, as people are shifting from local demand to pricier vehicles and that may spur more ‘India-first’ models,NikkeiAsiareported.

India had already surpassed Japan and become the world’s thirdlargest car market and now it seems that they are turning the global manufacturers towards them. As Indian drivers are opting for more expensive cars, global manufacturers are also designing the automobile for India.

In a conversation with Japanbased Nikkei Asia newspaper, Frank Torres, president of Nissan India said that the Japanese automaker “wants touseIndiaasabighubforexports.”

Nissan, which is currently exporting the Magnite SUV, is planning to start the left-hand drive variantsoftheSUVintheMiddleEast andLatinAmerica.

Nissan and its partner Renault committed USD 600 million this year to roll out six new cars, including electricvehicles, thatwillgoonsalein 2025. All those models will be exported, asperNikkeiAsia.

“Export [from India] is one of the pillars of our strategy,” Torres said. “It is not only to increase the revenue but also increase our [production] capacityutilization,”headded.

Analysts say the shift in local demand from small, inexpensive cars to higher-quality vehicles could encourage other global automakers to plan more “India-first” models that areeventuallyexported.

“Carmakershavelearntthatifyou make a compelling product, Indians are not averse to it,” said Harshvardhan Sharma, head of automotive retail practice at Nomura Research Institute. “Manufacturers need not plan track one for India and track two for the global markets, as

the Indian market is quite in sync and harmonized with global markets,” Sharmaadded.

India’s lower-cost cars are another potential advantage for an export-focusedapproach.

Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO at Skoda Auto Volkswagen, told Nikkei Asia that the India unit will spearhead the Group’s expansioninSoutheastAsia.

The country has an extensive network of domestic component suppliers and comparatively cheap labour. The Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India saidinareportearlierthismonththat the auto parts sector grew about 33 per cent in fiscal 2023 to about USD70billion.

Analysts say increasing exports is crucialforglobalcarmakersthathave been overshadowed by local rivals such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors andtheMahindraGroup, asreported.
