GENEVA: At a time when the contraction of global economic growth, high energy prices and inflation are dominating the public agenda, a high-level meeting of CEOs and government officials in Paris in mid-December offered a few glimpses of optimism and underscored the continued importanceofglobaltrade.
Commenting on the macroeconomic factors impacting global markets, MSC CEO Soren Toft explained how MSC – as the world’s largest containershippingline–hasthesizeandscaletonavigatethis environment and keep on investing for the future to ensure that populations keep benefiting from international commerce.

NEW DELHI: The problems remain the same, as do the solutions. India has a very high dependence on road transport for freight movement, which, in turn, makes the cost of logistics much higher than in several advanced economies. Cont’d. Pg. 17

“The future economy will still be globalised, even if some supply chains are a little more distributed,” Soren told the Conference of Paris in a panel session on ‘Charting a New Economy’. “Trade has brought hundreds of millions out of poverty, enabled local producers to tap international markets and empowered localcommunitiesthrougheconomicprosperity.”
Following the bust and boom volatility of the pandemic markets, when consumers ploughed money intophysicalgoods, thecommercialshippingmarkethas been normalizing in the second half of this year, comparedwiththeextraordinaryfreightrateswitnessed during the pandemic. Nonetheless, container demand has shown a slight resurgence in recent weeks and countries will continue to trade, potentially still producingsomemodestgrowthin2023,Sorensaid.
The cargo market is also experiencing variation across different regions, with pessimistic forecasts in Europe being outstripped by a more positive view in North America, following five consecutive months of slowinginflationintheU.S.
The conference panel agreed that production costs are high on the agenda of CEOs as energy costs and inflationimpactallindustries.Companiesareunlikelyto make immediate fundamental changes to producing
goods in Asia, even if there have been some cases of “re-shoring”and“near-shoring”inthesupplychain,Soren said. Although Asia remains the world’s manufacturing hub, within a couple of decades, Africa will in the future playagreaterroleinproductionfortheworld, headded.
Soren also outlined MSC’s approach to sustainability andhowMSCiscontributingtoeffortstodecarbonizethe industry, step by step. First, by improving efficiency and moving on to lower carbon transition fuels such as biofuels and LNG (liquefied natural gas). Then, as soon as possible, by tapping net zero alternative fuels when theybecomeavailableatscale.
He appealed for more global policy making and regulationthatwouldhelpincentivizeenergycompanies to produce alternative green fuels and encourage banks to lend capital to fund the transition to a new, decarbonizedglobaleconomy:
“For MSC sustainability is a top priority and we are already preparing our fleet for the fuels of the future, always heading towards our net zero 2050 target,” Soren ToftCEOofMSC.
Remarking on the lessons learned from the pandemic, Soren noted that the global supply chain disruption has revealed to many people for the first time the important job that men and women do to keep the world moving and that seafarers and logistics workers shouldbecommendedfortheimportantjobstheydo.

NEW DELHI: Sugar production has increased 5 per cent to 82.1 lakh tonnes between October 1 and December15periodofthismarketing year, while mills have contracted to export45-50lakhtonnesofsweetener, industrybodyISMAsaidrecently.
Sugar marketing year runs from October to September. The production of sugar stood at 77.9 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the2021-22marketingyear.
“As per port information and market reports, about 45-50 lakh tonnesofcontractsforexportofsugar have already been entered into so far. Out of that, about 6 lakh tonnes of sugar have been physically exported out of the country up to 30th
November,” Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement.
Market reports suggest that another 8-9 lakh tonnes of sugar is in pipeline to be exported in December, therebytotalexportsbytheendofthis month could be around 15 lakh tonnes.
India exported a record 111 lakh tonnes of sugar in 2021-22 marketing year. In November, the government allowed export of 60 lakh tonnes of sugar in the current (2022-23) marketingyear.
As per the data, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh between October 1 and December 15 of the current marketing year rose to 20.3 lakh
tonnes from 19.8 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period. In Maharashtra, sugar output has increased so far to 33 lakh tonnes from 31.9 lakh tonnes, while the production in Karnataka has risen to 18.9 lakh tonnes from 18.4lakhtonnes.
India’s total sugar production is expected to be the highest ever at 410 lakh tonnes (before diversion for ethanol) in the 2022-23 marketing year. Sugar diversion towards production of ethanol is estimated to be at 45 lakh tonnes in the current marketingyear.
Hence, the net sugar production after factoring in the diversion is expected to be at 365 lakh tonnes in the2022-23marketingyear.

The update on the demerger fuelled a rally in the stock. Cont’d. from Pg. 3
So logistics cost as a percentage of GDP is about 14 percent in India while it is in single digits in several Western economies. Also, the average daily distance covered by a goods truck, usually loaded beyond capacity, in India is just about a fifth of that in the US. On returnjourneys,upto40percentofthese trucks are empty. Such low utilisation of truck fleets by Indian transporters leads to higher logistics costs, increased consumption of fuel and, of course, higheremissions.
The story of inefficiencies repeats itself in other logistics sectors too: in seaports, air cargo and freight carriage by the Indian Railways. And these inefficiencies hurt India’s export competitiveness.
But as a Parliamentary Standing Committee has found, many of the suggestions the panel made last year to various ministries on ways to lower logistics costs and augment infrastructure to boost exports, have not been implemented. How complicated India’s logistics sector is can be gauged from these stats: there are more than Ä20 government agencies and 37 export promotion councils; carriage of goods by various modes is governed by multiple laws and varied documentation requirementsaddtothemess.
The National Logistics Policy (NLP), which was recently unveiled after much delay, isexpectedtosomewhatsmoothen these bumps and offer a coordinated approach to reducing overall logistics costs. But experts have already dubbed the NLP a paper of Government intent, lackingaroadmaptobringdowncosts.
Now, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce has said in its Action Taken Report (which follows the recommendationsmadelastyearonhow to boost India’s exports) that while some of its recommendations have been implemented, answers to many of the questions posed by the panel have been bypassed.
In some instances, different ministries have not paid heed to the suggestionsbythispanel.
Trains: The parliamentary panel had sought to know whether there is an applicable standard governing punctuality of trains in the country. On-time trains would mean greater efficiency in freight movement and ultimately, Indian Railways (IR) would succeedingettingahighershareofoverall freight movement, which currently predominantly prefers road transport due tofrequentdelaysintraincarriage.
“The Committee observes that the ministry has not furnished a reply with regard to the recommendation of the formulation of an applicable standard for ensuring punctuality of Government run trains and to levy a penalty for delays beyondareasonabletime,”thereportsaid.
Punctuality of trains is key to boosting exports, the panel noted. Another of the committee’s recommendations, on increasing the frequency of trains from Inland Container Depots (ICDs), has also not been addressed by the IR. Then, on the committee’s concerns over exorbitant chargesbyintermediariesonmovement of empty containers from ports to ICDs, the IR has not implemented the suggestion that intermediaries be removed from the scenario and that exporters could directly deal with the IR formovementofemptycontainers.
The setting up of a new railway zone, the South Coast Railway Zone, with headquarters in Visakhapatnam to improve India’s export competitiveness, hasalsobeendelayed.
The parliamentary panel had said earlierthattheoverburdeningofalready burdened segments across IR leads to gross inefficiencies. An overwhelming 96 percent of freight traffic on IR has been handled on 51 percent of the network, which is alreadyhighlycongested.
Also, theshareofIRinthetotalfreight pieremainsatjust35percentas65percent of freight is transported by road. High freight rates, lack of long-term incentives andcross-subsidizationofpassengerfares through high freight rates are some of the issues which make logistics cost for railtransportationuncompetitive.
The panel has, once again, pointed out that the freight rates being charged by IR are rendering India’s exports uncompetitive.
Roads: India has no official data on the value and volume of goods transportedbyroad, eventhoughatleast three-fourths of all freight travelling across the country does so on trucks. Despite the Parliamentary panel’s recommendationtotheMinistryofRoad TransportandHighwaysondevelopinga database for goods movement by road to facilitate data-based policymaking, no such base has been developed. And in response to the panel’s recommendation that cartelization by truckers on some routes be checked, the ministry has responded with how it is dismantling border checkposts for smoother goods’ movement! The panel had pointed out that truckers’ unions restrict free movement of trucks and levyfreightchargeshigherthanmarket rates in certain states. Then, the data provided about the status of various Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) is old. Ditto for the data on the status of the Dedicated Freight Corridor being builtbyIR.
Ports: Not even half the total installed capacity at the country’s Major Ports has been put to use in the last five years.Andeventhoughtheperformance of India’s Major Ports on key indicators has improved, it remains far from satisfactory.
Air Cargo: Theshareofdedicatedair freightersisonly15percentagainst50-55 percent globally. The standing committee has noted that if the government were to take steps to consolidate air cargo and carve out a higher share in the international air cargo business, further development of dedicated air freighters will happen. In its response, the ministry of civil aviation said that it had withdrawn the Open Sky Policy for air cargo and non-scheduled movement of foreign cargo carriers is now restricted to just six metros and the number of dedicated freighters has increased four-fold to 28inthreeyears.
NEW DELHI : The share of MSME exports in the country’s total exports stood at 42.67 percent as of August 2022 in the current fiscal, nearing the FY22 share of 45.03 per cent, according to the data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics shared by the Minister of State for MSMEs Shri Bhanu Pratap Singh VermainawrittenreplyinRajyaSabha.
India’s overall exports (merchandise and services combined) for the April-August 2022 period was estimated to be $311.82 billion, up 19.72 per cent over the same period last year, according to a commerce ministry statement. However, the FY22 exports
share of MSMEs was down from 49.35 per cent share in FY21 and 49.77 per cent in FY20 even as India’s total exports jumped to $669.65 billion in FY22from$497.90billioninFY21.
“Commodity prices and commodity exports including petroleum, steel and other metals, and food grains have jumped record high recently. In these segments MSMEs are not the key players while non-MSME exporters account for exports of petroleum products, steel, food grains etc., who have probably done exceptionally well and hence the overall share of MSME exports has come down due to this,” said Ajay Sahai, Director General &
CEO, Federation of Indian Export Organisations.
Nonetheless, MSME exports had increased by 21.8 per cent from $155.9 billion during FY20 and 31.9 per cent from $143.9 billion during FY21 to $190 billion during FY22, according to the datasharedbyVermainJulythisyear.
Among the top 10 export destinations for Indian MSMEs in FY22 were the US ($54.7 billion), UAE ($13.4 billion), Hong Kong ($9.93 billion), the UK ($7.54 billion), Germany ($7.19 billion), China ($5.16 billion), Belgium ($4.73 billion) France ($4.20 billion), the Netherlands ($4.24billion),andItaly($3.84billion).
NEW DELHI: India’s iron ore exports witnessed a month-on-month uptrend in December with 0.6 million tonnes (of fines and lumps) being booked for the first two weeks of December. This is almost double of what was booked in November; and nearly 60 per cent higher than that of thefullmonthlastyear.
Shipments for November was 0.29 million tonnes (mt) – a 131 per cent month-on-month,tradeandvessellineupdatatrackedbySteelmintshows.
As per trade sources, the December bookings so far are
amongstthebestsinceJune.
DataavailablefromtheMinistryof Commerceshowthat,inJune,0.31mt was exported; in July it was 0.5 mt; in August it was 0.41 mt; in September it dropped to zero and picked slightly in Octoberto0.13mt.
Iron ore shipments started falling on the back of weakened commodity cycle, strict Covid control measures in China -the key export market; and India imposing strict export duty on steel making commodities, including high-gradeore.
According to a Commerce
Ministry official, uptake started endNovember after the withdrawal of exportdutysinceNovember19.
“Duetocargolyingatports,Indian iron ore export activities have rose post-removal of export duties on ore. December trends are quite good at themoment,”theofficialsaid.
After the removal of the said duties, several trading houses communicated export offers for ironore – 52-57 per cent fines – that were due for loading end-November to early December, a SteelMint report said.
NEW DELHI: The National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLM), a unit of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has floated a fresh tender to build a multi modal logistics park at Bengaluru with private funds after an earlier attempt collapsed due to the presence of a single bidder.
Reliance Industries Ltd and Prakash Asphaltings and Toll Highways (India) Ltd had applied for the multi modal logistics park planned to be developed on 400 acres at Muddalinganahalli in Bengaluru Rural district. Prakash Asphaltings and Toll Highways was disqualified fromthetender.
On 15 December, the National Highways Logistics Management issued a notice cancelling the bid processwithoutassigningreasons.
A fresh tender for the multimodal logistics park at Muddalinganahalli wasissuedonthesameday.
“We received two bids for the project and one of them could not qualify, resulting in a single bid situation,” Prakash Gaur, Chief Executive Officer, National Highways Logistics Management Ltd said, explaining why the tender was annulled.
“There was a lot of interest in the market for theproject and4-5 bidders were asking for time extension. Unfortunately, we could not extend
the timeline and many of them could notparticipatethattime.Iamsureall of them will participate this time,” Gauradded.
Publicauthoritiestypicallyrefrain from processing a single bid per guidelines issued by the Central VigilanceCommission(CVC).Incase, the second round of tendering also fetched a single bid, the authority floating the tender was allowed to takeacallonthebid.
However, in October 2021, the Union Government scrapped the “practice” followed by public authorities to reject a single bid during open tenders, stating that it should be considered valid subject to someconditions.
NEW DELHI: At a time when exports in many sectors are either sliding or at best remaining stable, smartphone shipments from India crossed the Rs 50,000-crore mark during April-November 2022, up 110% compared to the same period last year. This is also 10% higher from Rs 45,000 crore registered during the entireFY22.
The main contributors to this massive growth are Apple contract manufacturers – Foxconn, Pegatron (both located in Tamil Nadu) and Wistron (located in Karnataka) – and Samsung.
Nearly 40% of the Rs 50,000 crore worth of smartphones exported from India are iPhones, which Apple exports to Europe,
West Asia and Asian countries, except China.
Samsung and a range of small exporters, most of which are Indian device makers, contributed the remaining60%.
Apple’s vendors and Samsung are participants in the smartphone PLI scheme announced by the governmentinApril2020.

OSLO: A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) continues to integrate global end-to-end cold chains with the announcement of a new innovative cold storage facility planned for Flatholmen quay in Aalesund, Norway. Thenewfacilityisspecificallydesignedtoaccommodatethe needs of the vast Norwegian seafood industry. It will be amongthelargestcoldstoragesofitskindinthecountryand isexpectedtobecomefullyoperationalbyQ12024.
The construction of the new facility in Aalesund, which also will be the company’s first low GHG emissions cold storage in Norway, will be according to BREEAM Excellent standards with zero direct emissions from operations in full accordance with Maersk´s overall goal to decarbonise its entireoperationsby2040.
When operational, the facility is expected to help significantly reduce customers´ climate footprint in their entiresupplychain.
“We are pleased to announce our first green cold storage facility in Norway. Many of our customers, especially in the seafood industry, are looking for long-term partners that have such capabilities to reduce their entire climate footprint.ThecoldstoreinAalesundisanotherstepforward in our commitment to set a course for zero carbon logistics while at the same time enabling true integrated logistics for our customers,”said, Birna Odefors, Area Managing Director,Nordics,A.P.Moller–Maersk.
Maersk’s emissions targets entail that at least 90 pct. of its global cold chain and contract logistics operations will becertifiedasgreenby2030(scope1and2).
Upon completion, the new and innovative facility will have around 12,000 sqm of fully convertible temperaturecontrolled space. In total, the facility will provide storage for over 33,000 pallets of cold store products while offering true integrated cold chain logistics offerings as storage, distribution, and inland transportation services for itscustomers.
“With this initiative, we are taking another step forward in enabling true end-to-end cold chain offerings in Norway. ThenewfacilityinAalesundwillallowallcargotobedirectly stored and consolidated at our cold store at the terminal instead of being consolidated from smaller cold stores in the region. With its quay side location, it will also provide easy infrastructure access from palletised cargo from the
North and limit today’s traffic between cold stores and terminal. All this will improve our customers cashflow and lead to lower operational costs for everyone involved,” says Birna Odefors, Area Managing Director, Nordics, A.P.Moller–Maersk.
Though decades, Maersk has been active in the region of Aalesund, the largest receiver of wild catch in Norway and alsothemostimportanthubforfishfromNorthofNorway.
The new facility will serve as a seamless supply chain link for customers when transporting frozen and refrigerated products such linking Aalesund´s strategic location with easy access to national road networks and proximity with shipping ports reaching major container hubs in Europe with relative ease, and from there to the rest oftheworld.
The agreement with Maersk to build a state-of-the-art and low GHG emissions cold storage facility is another milestone for the development of Port of Aalesund and is an importantstepinthelong-termpartnership.
“We are excited and proud to be able to facilitate a major development for the Aalesund region. The long-term relation for Maersk in Aalesund is consolidated through this agreement and we are confident that it will bring even more business to our area,” says, Ole Christian Fiskaa, PortDirector,PortofAalesund.

NEW DELHI: Six months after the India-UAE free trade agreement (FTA) came into force, India’s merchandise exports to the West Asian economy rose 13.5% from a year earlier, outpacing a 10.3% increase in the country’s overall goods despatches. Between May and October this fiscal, exports to the UAE hit $15.39 billion, compared with $13.56 billion a year before, according to the latest official data. Meanwhile, goods imports from the UAE jumped 32.6% during this period to $27.44 billion, compared with a 34.6% jumpinIndia’stotalimports.
Of course, these are early days and a comprehensive analysis of gains or losses from the FTA is possible only over the medium-to-long term. “(Nevertheless), the initial signs are encouraging. We have been expecting a positive result,” anofficialsourcesaid.
The outcome of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which entered into force on May 1, assumes significance, as it was the first FTA that New Delhi had signed with any economy in a decade, shedding its inhibitions about the efficacy of trade deals. According to an FE analysis earlier this year, five of India’s six prominent FTAs, which came into force between 2006 and 2011, had exacerbated New Delhi’s trade balance. After the agreement with the UAE, India hammered out an interimtradedealwithAustraliaandisnowengagedintalks for FTAs with the UK, the EU, Canada, and members of the
GulfCo-operationCouncil.
Accordingtotheofficialdata, petroleumproductsandgems and jewellery made up close to a half of India’s exports to the UAE, followed by certain capital goods and steel and iron and suchproducts.Similarly, oilandgemsandjewellerydominated India’s purchases from the UAE, with an 80% share in imports. The gems and jewellery segment has emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the trade deal. SuchexportstotheUAEjumped20.6%thisfiscal,farexceeding justa2.6%riseinoveralldespatchesoftheseproducts.
According to the CEPA, the UAE will allow as many as 99% of Indian goods (in value term) at zero duty in five years from about 90% in the first year. Similarly, India will permit duty-free access to 80% of goods from the UAE now and it wouldgoupto90%in10years.
Indian labour-intensive sectors, such as gems & jewellery, textiles & garments, leather, footwear, sports goods, plastics, furniture, agricultural and wood products stand to gain from the FTA, along with other sectors like engineering products, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, andautomobiles.
Indian service providers, too, will have greater access to around 111 sub-sectors from the 11 broad service categories. Bilateral trade (both goods and services) is targeted to touch $115 billion in five years from about $60 billioninthepre-pandemicyearofFY20.
