India may export 30 Million MT/Year of coal to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka by 2030

NEWDELHI:Indiacanexportaround30millionmt/year of coal to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka by 2030 from the mines located in the eastern part of the country, according to the draftversionofthe“IntegratedCoalLogisticsPlan”recently issued by the federal coal ministry for stakeholder consultations.

“All efforts are on to further enhance production and export of thermal coal by the year 2025-26,” Coal Minister ShriPralhadJoshisaidrecently.

India currently exports around 1 million-2 million mt of coal every year to its neighboring nations of Bangladesh and NepalwithnoexportstoSriLanka.

According to the document, reviewed by S&P Global Commodity Insights, coal with a 2,950- 3,850 kcal/kg GAR calorificvalueiswellplacedtoreplaceIndonesiancoalinthe Bangladesh market and “create a long-term sustainable export-orientedcoalmarket”forIndianproducers.

An analysis in the document found that the price of this coal on a CFR Bangladesh basis would be between Rupees 2,534-2,976/mt($30-$36/mt).

The average price at which Bangladesh imported 5,000 kcal/kg GAR coal in the first five months of 2023 was $106.62/mt, Platts data from S&P Global showed. Platts assessed 5,000 kcal/kg GAR thermal coal at $97.95/mt May26,onaCFRBangladeshbasis.

According to the report, annual thermal coal demand for power generation in import-dependent Bangladesh is forecasttorisefromthepresent2.3millionmtto21million-25 millionmtby2025tofueltheupcomingcoal-basedcapacities.

Rice exports to certain European countries exempted from mandatory inspection certificate for 6 months

NEW DELHI: India recently deferred the mandatory requirement of a certificate of inspection by export inspection agencies for shipping both basmati and non-basmati rice to certain European countries by six months. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade(DGFT)saidthatitisamending anotificationdatedAugust17,2022,to theextentthatexportofrice(basmati

and non-basmati) to EU member states and other European countries namely Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and UK “only” will require certificate of inspection from Export Inspection Council/ExportInspectionAgency.

“Export to remaining European countrieswillnotrequireacertificate ofinspectionbytheExportInspection Council/ExportInspectionAgencyfor

export from the date of this notification for a period of six months,”theDGFTsaid.

It was earlier stated by the directorate to make the certificate must for export to these countries fromJanuarythisyear.

EIC is the official export certification body of India which ensuresqualityandsafetyofproducts exportedfromIndia.

Global supply chain relocation: China’s loss is India, Vietnam’s gain

NEW DELHI: The ongoing global economic uncertainty has exposed many vulnerabilities with global supplychains.Therecenteventshave evenraiseddoubtsoverglobalisation, with many economies now understanding the fragility of the global supply chains and mulling shifting to a model that is more regionallybased.

Keeping this situation at the centre, a World Economic Forum (WEF)’s report, Chief Economists

Outlook, outlines the emerging contours of the current economic conditionsandpinpointsprioritiesfor further action by policymakers and businessesglobally.Thereportstates that the regions most likely to benefit from the global supply chain changes are South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean,andtheUS.

The report specifically states that economies that are likely to benefit from these changes are India,

Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, and Poland. These assertions are backed by the fact that many of these countries have managed to attract substantial foreigndirectinvestment(FDI)inthe last few years. For instance, the financial year 2021-22 recorded the highest FDI into India at $83.6 billion. Similarly, in 2021, Vietnam attracted more than $31.15 billion in FDI pledges, 9% higher than the previous year.

India emerges as key source country for FDI into Dubai: Report

NEW DELHI: India has emerged as a key source country for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Dubai, one of the wealthiest of the seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates, according to a report released on Monday. It ranked among the top five source countries for announced FDI projects and estimatedFDIcapital,accordingtoa report released by "fDi Markets'', a service from UK's Financial TimesLtd.

With 77.5 per cent of greenfield projects, the top sectors by FDI projects from India into Dubai in 2022 were software & IT services (32 per cent), business services (19 per cent), consumer products (9 per cent), real estate (6 per cent), andfinancialservices(5percent).

Meanwhile, the top sectors by FDI capital from India into Dubai in 2022 wereconsumerproducts(28percent), software & IT services (20 per cent), communications (19 per cent), pharmaceuticals (8 per cent), and businessservices(8percent).

Apart from maintaining its first rankasadestinationcityforFDIfrom India, Dubai retained its number 1 spot globally for attracting greenfield FDI projects in 2022, further reinforcing its position as the world's top foreign direct investment hub, thereportsaid.

Retaining its top spot for a second successive year, Dubai achieved 89.5 per cent YoY (year-over-year) growth in total announced FDI projects in 2022, while total FDI capital surged 80.3 per cent over

the same period, further consolidating the emirate's status as oneofthetopthreeglobalcities.

The data for 2022 showed that Dubai continued to maintain and improveitsleadershippositionacross keyFDIattractionmetrics.

The emirate ranked first in attracting FDI projects into tourism, business services, financial services, transport and warehousing, consumer products, and software & ITservicessectors.

India’s Jan.-April imports from China rise 4.6% to $37.86 billion

NEW DELHI: India’s imports of Chinesegoodshavecontinuedtorisein 2023, growing 4.6% in the first four monthsoftheyeartocross$37.86billion.

Two-way trade climbed 4.5% from theyear-earlierperiodtoreach$44.34 billion at the end of April, data from China’s General Administration of Customs showed. India’s exports to China also rose by 3.7%, but still accounted for a smaller share of the bilateraltrade.

In 2022, bilateral trade with China reached a record $135.98 billion, driven by a 21% rise in imports into

India. The trade deficit crossed $100 billionforthefirsttimelastyear.

Analysts said the continuing increase in imports of Chinese goods presented a mixed picture, highlighting a rise in demand for intermediates required by Indian industry,aswellascontinuedreliance on sourcing from China, a matter of concern for New Delhi amid frayed politicalties.

In recent years, India’s biggest imports from China have included active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), chemicals, electrical and

mechanical machinery, auto components,andmedicalsupplies.

Inthefirstfourmonthsoftheyear, China’stradewithASEAN,itslargest trading partner, increased 5.6% to $304.63 billion. Trade with the EU and the United States, China’s secondand third-biggest trading partners that have both been recently highlighting the need to “de-risk” supply chains away from China, however, showed declines. While trade with the EU slid by 3.5% to $262.53 billion, that with the U.S. contracted11.2%to$217.92billion.

Domestic Container manufacturing : CONCOR impacted due to slow pace

NEWDELHI:India’sbidtobecome a new destination for cargo container manufacturing is yet to gather speed with Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR), India’s biggest buyer of steel boxes, lamenting that the ecosystem for making containers was “taking time” and a resultant shortage of containers has become a big “constraint”initsplantogrowthelocal business to neutralise the sluggishness in the export-import trade.

The idea to make cargo containers locally was taken after India’s exportimport trade suffered a huge shortage of steel boxes in the wake of the pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions. It was also aimed at cutting India’s dependence on China, the world’s largest maker of containers, in the face of a flare-up alongtheborder.

CONCOR placed orders with local firms including Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Braithwaite & Co Ltd, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd and APPL Containers Pvt Ltd, for manufacturing some 19,000 containers under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative.

“But the ecosystem development is still taking time. The container manufacturing is not going at the pace which we expected and which we want. So, there is a shortage of domestic containers,” Mr. V Kalyana Rama, Chairman and Managing Director, CONCOR told analysts during the fourth quarter and annual results earnings callon19May.

Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw toldParliamentinAprilthat CONCOR was “facing some problems insupplyandprocurementofdomestic containers”.

CONCOR, Vaishnaw said, had placed orders for 19,000 containers on seven indigenous container manufacturers located in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Punjab,Maharashtra,andGujarat.

Till 31 March 2023, about 500 containers have been delivered to CONCOR,VaishnawtoldLokSabhaon 5April.

Stagnating trade and a ballooning surplus of shipping containers, following easing of pandemic era supply chain constraints, has led to a collapse in global newbuild container output,whichisforecasttoslumptoits lowest level in 14 years, said Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd, a Londonbased independent maritime research consultancy.

Kalyana Rama at CONCOR said that India’s export-import scenario was“notveryencouraging”.

“The Indian exports are under strain, like handicrafts are not going andmerchandiseexportsareless.

Except primary agro exports, other exports are less, and a lot of empty-container inventories are buildingupinIndia,”hesaid.

With the export-import volumes facing headwinds as Western economies grapple with an impending recession, CONCOR is banking on domestictradetodrivegrowth.

“We are doing very well in the domestic sector. This is the third year

where we could see good growth in domestic business. On the revenue side, we grew by 25 percent and on the volume side by almost 15 percent. This year (FY24) also we are working out to grow in the same manner. But the main constraint is container availability,”KalyanaRamastated.

The shortage of domestic containers has hampered CONCOR’s plan to ramp up shipment of cement in steel boxes, a business it had entered recentlyandhasshowngoodtraction.

CONCOR transported some 3,800 containers loaded with cement last year with March alone accounting for about800containers.

“There is a lot of interest. The business has stabilised, but shortageofcontainersisamajorissue. So, we are not really pushing it very fast. We require 25,000 more containers. But the Indian container manufacturing industry is yet to pick up. So, we are working in a balanced way,”KalyanaRamaremarked.

“As of now, we are able to maintain our supply lines, but to grow faster we requiremorecontainers.

So, we are working on different aspects like getting some containers onlease,”hesaid.

CONCOR is also “working on” running double stack container trains on the domestic sector to improve margins.

Despite the slow pace of manufacturing and delivery, CONCOR willplaceordersformorecontainersto encouragenewmanufacturerstoenter the sector by tapping the interest generatedinthebusiness,headded.

Massive investment of Rs 1 lakh crore planned for Airports: Jyotiraditya Scindia

NEWDELHI:UnionCivilAviation MinisterJyotiradityaScindiarecently said that there is a plan to invest Rs 1 lakh crores in airports in the comingdays.

Scindia also said that the Government has detailed expansion plansforairportsandmetros.

Scindia said, "In the past 65years,wehad74airportsinIndia. In the last 9 years, we have built additional 74 airports, heliports, and water aerodromes. We will double it to 148 and we will take this number to over 200 in the next 4 years. Combining the private and government sectors, we are planning to invest Rs 1 lakh crores onairports."

"We have made a plan for investment including the private sectorandthegovernmentsector,we have a plan which is worth about one lakh crore only in the airport area. Along with this, the throughput capacity of our six metros, which we have there, is 22 crores per year, withinthenextfouryears,wewilltake usupto42croresandincludingJewar andNaviMumbaiairports,"headded.

He also mentioned that the airlines in India are also increasing theircapacity.

"We have huge and determined plans in the civil aviation sector, airlines are also increasing their capacity, Air India has placed orders for 470, about 420 are narrow-body

planes and 50 are wide-body planes. India's flag is also being established globallybyairlines,"hesaid.

India, Indonesia complete joint report on Sabang Port feasibility

NEWDELHI:IndiaandIndonesia have completed a joint feasibility study on developing the strategically valuable Sabang port, according to personsawareofthematter.

Sabang port, which is located in the province of Aceh, is roughly 700 km from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The successful development of thisvitalportwouldallowIndiaeasier access to the Malacca Straits, a narrow stretch of the sea between IndonesiaandMalaysiaandoneofsix chokepoints along the world’s maritimetradingroutes.

A substantial chunk of the world’s goodtradepassesthroughtheStraits,

as does the vast majority of China’s imports of energy. Developing the Sabang Port could bolster India’s militarypositionvis-a-visChinainthe IndianOcean.

In 2018, Indonesia’s thencoordinating minister for maritime affairs Luhut Pandjaitan said Sabang portwouldbefittohostbothshipping vesselsandsubmarines.
