Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s Moscow visit, Russia and Iran have agreed on the transit of 12 million tonnes of Russian goods via Tehran along the International North-South Transport Corridor, with both Moscow and New Delhi seeking to increase trade volumes through the multi-modal transport corridor that has been a game-changer in IndoRussian economic partnership since
theUkrainewar.
The decision to boost INSTC trade was taken during a recent visit of senior Iranian officials to Moscow.
During Jaishankar’s visit to Moscow and the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister’svisittoNewDelhi, boosting trade via INSTC was a key discussion itemontheagenda.
Russia has also agreed to invest in establishing logistic hubs to increase transit capacity, especially in Iran’s
Shahid Rajaei and Chabahar Ports, eyeing the Indian and South East Asian markets, officials said. Russian involvement in Chabahar will further boost the capacity of the port built by India.
New Delhi has been pushing to link the Chabahar Port with INSTC as viable transport corridors in the Eurasian region amid China’s push to make the Belt and Road Initiative an attractiveproposition.
WASHINGTON: After the pandemic-driven surge in consumer demand that triggered a frenzy of shipping activity and skyrocketing prices, logistics and transportation companies are signaling a fast slowdown.
With consumer demand wavering and retailers coping with excess inventoriesatoverstuffedwarehouses, global container volumes fell 8.6% in September, accordingtomaritimedata group Container Trade Statistics, reaching the lowest level since February during a period when shippingisusuallyatitsstrongest. The rapid falloff is hitting imports into the U.S. hard. Research group Descartes Datamyne says container imports from China into the U.S. were down nearly 23% in October from the annual highinAugust.
TheimpactiscascadingacrossU.S. domestic supply chains, dimming cargo volumes for trucking companies and railroads. It is also bringing down the hefty freight rates that have crashed companies’ transportation budgets over the past two years, presenting an opportunity to cut logistics costs for those retailers and manufacturers that are looking to movegoods.
The weekly Shanghai Containerized Freight Index, which measuresshippingpricesoutofChina, recently dropped to $1,443.29, about one-third the level it hit in early June. The separate Drewry Worldwide Container Index measuring the average price to ship a 40-foot container, reached $2,773 in early November, the lowest level in two years. Drewry, a U.K. data provider, saidthe average rate to ship a 40-foot container from Shanghai to Los Angeles had fallen to $2,262 in the first week of November from $11,197 in lateJanuary.
DAT Solutions LLC, a load board matching shipments and trucks in the U.S. spot market, says loads posted to
its load board were down about 52% year-over-year in October and average rates were down nearly 16% from last year.Theaveragerateof$2.37permile that the company measured in early Novemberwouldmarkthelowestprice for shipping goods by truckload since September2020.
Thedeclineiscomingduringthesocalled peak season, when business ramps up ahead of the holidays. Now, truckers are forecasting what many arecallingamutedpeak.“Peakseason thisyearjustdoesn’tappeartobemuch ofanevent,I’lljustsayitlikethat, while we’re still experiencing growth,” said Darren Field, President of intermodal at J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., a warning from the freight bellwether on the shift in consumerspending.
Still, thefadingtransportationcosts haven’t reached deeply into the economy yet, in part because freight rates in many cases remain above prepandemic levels even after the steep declines this year. The jawdropping declines also measure the spot market prices. Most freight business moves on contract rates, and those long-term prices haven’t fallen nearly as fast as the spot market. Thegapbetweenspot-marketratesand contract rates is narrowing, however, and the low spot prices will have a big influence on new annual contracts that carriers, from ocean shipping lines to truckers, negotiate with their shipping customersinearly2023.
Carriers across the freight sector are trying to maintain equilibrium, in part by cutting capacity in line with softer demand. Container lines have canceled dozens of scheduled services this fall in what the business calls “blanked sailings.” But they are also fighting a tide that is moving against them, with deliveries of hundreds of new ships over the next two years that will keep capacity plentiful unless carriers take the expensive step of idlingships.
C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc., thelargestfreightbrokerintheU.S.by revenue, is even laying off hundreds of workers after hiring in big numbers as it coped with pandemic-driven demand. “We got ahead of ourselves in terms of head count,” said the company’s chief executive, Bob Biesterfeld. “We certainly did not expect that the market was going to comedownasrapidlyasitdid.”
A freight market marked by diminishing demand and lower prices will present opportunities for shipping customers to get their logistics budgets back in order, assuming, of course, that underlying demand from consumersandfactoriesholdsup.
Here are some tips for logistics and supply-chain managers to take advantageofachangingmarket.
Be careful about signing onto new warehouse capacity. Industrial developers have hundreds of millions of square feet of space under construction, and although vacancy ratesremainathistoriclows, thereare growing signs the drop in available space has bottomed out. Even Amazon.comInc.isofferingsomeofits spare warehouse space for sublease. It may take time, however, even years, for the market to return to greater balance. Markets near Southern California’s ports, for instance, still havevacancyratesnear1%.
Spread out your shipping options. Companies may be tempted to jump on low rates that may hit the market next year,butsupply-chainmanagersshould keep in mind the volatility that has marked business over the past two years.Usemultiplecarriersratherthan puttingallyourpalletsinonebasket.
Keep a close eye on commodity markets.Pricesforrawmaterialshave been highly volatile in the past two years. Stability in those markets will provideagoodguideforthedirectionof supplychains, andcompanycosts, next year.

LUCKNOW: The Government of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has pledged to turn western and central Uttar Pradesh into a hub for the auto and electric vehicle sectors as well as theirsupportingcomponentsinorderto increase the State’s economy to USD 1 trillion. The demand for electric vehicles in the auto business is rising swiftly, thus,CMYogitoldtheofficialsat a high-level meeting that the auto and electric vehicle industries in western and central UP already have enough of resources and just need to be encouraged to grow. As a result, this industry will also have a lot of work opportunities.
In the auto industry, the Growth State Value Addition (GSVA) of UP was
1.5 billion dollars in 2019, which can be increased to five billion dollars in the nextfiveyears, accordingtoareport.
Accordingtoanofficialstatement,in western and central UP, 9000-10,000 acres of land will be needed for the development of the industry; the Yogi Government will spend 19-20 billion dollars on this. At the same time, auto parts with electric vehicles made here will be supplied to the UK, USA, Australia, and South Asia. There is actuallyalotofdemandforbatteriesfor twoandthree-wheelere-vehicles.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated during the meeting that both large industries and MSMEs (Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) play a significant part in the auto
industry and are already wellestablished in sufficient numbers in western and central UP. The expressway is also available for exporting equipment to these industries.
At the same time, to promote exports, the Easton Dedicated Freight Corridor can be easily developed here and connected to the expressway. The Yogi Government has chosen Agra, Shahjahanpur, Aligarh, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, and Etawah to boost the MSME sector, while Gautam Budh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Hapur, Kanpur Nagar, and Meerut have been chosen for the construction of big enterprises to encourage the auto industry, thestatementsaid.
NEW DELHI: Miners’ body FIMI hassoughtwithdrawalofexportdutyon bauxite, stating that the move will lead to optimum utilisation of low-grade mineral resources as it will expedite reopening of closed bauxite mines, create jobs and earn foreign exchange. Bauxiteistheprincipaloreofaluminum and therefore the mineral is the essential raw material for aluminium producers.
“The export duty of 15 per cent on bauxiteisdetrimentaltotheIndiannonmetallurgical bauxite producers and
exporters…This Federation therefore request for complete withdrawal of exportdutyonexportsofbauxite,”FIMI said in its pre-Budget proposals to the FinanceMinistry.
India, it said, is not only selfsufficient in meeting its requirement but has huge potential to be a major player in the international bauxite market.
Domestic alumina and aluminum producershavetheirowncaptivemines or meet their requirement from mines located in eastern and central parts of
the country, which contain plant grade bauxite.
On the other hand, bauxite deposits occurring in the country’s west coast (low in alumina content and high in silica) are technically not suitable and economically unviable for the refiners/smelters in the Country.
However, such non-plant grade bauxite is accepted in certain countries on account of the paucity of the mineral and availability of technology for using low-gradebauxite.
KOCHI: The Union Government’s decisiontoinvestRs380croretodeepen the draft depth at the Cochin Port to 16m,theCochinChamberofCommerce andIndustryhassoughtclarityoverthe otherfactorsrelatedtothedecision.
In a recent statement issued, the chamber said that the Central
Government needs to have a relook at theLightHouseDues(LHD),whichare the charges levied on ships for the maintenance of lighthouses and other aidstonavigation.
“As per the announcement, the Central Government is meeting only 50% of the cost and the balance is to be
met by the Cochin Port Authority. The financial position of the Cochin Port Authority does not appear to be good enough to meet the 50% cost of investment. Hence, the central government should consider meeting the full cost of deepening the draft depth,”thestatementsaid.
