MSC introduces New Electronic Bill of Lading for Customers Worldwide using WAVE BL's Platform GENEVA: MSC Mediterranean S h i p p i n g C o m p a n y , a Global leader in Container Shipping and logistics, is officially introducing the electronic bill of lading (eBL) for its customers around the world, following a successful pilot phase, using a solution on an

independent blockchain platform WAVE BL. The eBL enables shippers and other key supply chain stakeholders to receive and transmit the bill of lading document electronically, without any change or disruption to day-to-day business operations.

Edited excerpt of an exclusive Interview he logistics sector worldwide has witnessed a sea change over the last couple of years due to technological innovations enabling faster processes done more efciently at much cheaper rates. WAVE BL is a blockchain-based system that uses distributed ledger technology to ensure that all parties involved in a cargo shipment booking can issue, transfer, endorse and manage documents through a secure, decentralised network. Users can issue all originals, negotiable or non-negotiable, and exchange them via a direct, encrypted, peer-to-peer transmission. It's also possible for users to amend documents. WAVE BL's communication protocol is approved by the International Group of Protection & Indemnity Clubs, and meets the highest industry standards for security and privacy.

"MSC has chosen WAVE BL because it is the only solution that mirrors the traditional paper-based process that the shipping and cargo transportation industry is used to," says André Simha, Global Chief Digital & Information Officer at MSC. "It provides a digital alternative to all the possibilities available with traditional print documents, just much faster and more secure."

The WAVE BL platform can be used free of charge throughout 2021 for exporters, importers and traders.

Users only pay for issuing the original documents, and they do not need to invest in any IT infrastructure or make operational changes in order to use the service. They can simply sign up via MSC's website: www.msc.com/eBL. Longstanding advocacy for digitalisation in shipping MSC has long recognised the importance of digitalisation across the shipping industry and has been one of the pioneers behind the industry's digital transformation. As a founding member of the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), MSC has participated in a number of initiatives focused on driving standardisation, digitalisation and interoperability in container shipping. André Simha is also the Chairman of DCSA. Introducing an eBL solution is a critical step in the overall digitalisation of the industry. "Traditionally, the shipping industry has relied quite heavily on physical paper documents. And among these, the BL is the most important transport document in international trade," states André Simha. "While there have been attempts to create an eBL solution in the past, we are now in a position to introduce a solution that can pave the way to mass eBL adoption, which will mean significant savings for the shipping industry."

Saving the shipping industry billions DCSA research indicates that by achieving just 50% eBL adoption by 2030, the industry could potentially save more than USD 4 billion per year. In addition to the significant cost savings, the eBL offers a wide range of benefits to shippers, including eliminating the 'Document transportation' factor from the supply chain. Shippers can instantly transfer original and negotiable electronic documents across borders. The solution enables faster document transfers, which in turn, leads to a shorter

Helping countries severely impacted by COVID-19 While MSC has worked with WAVE BL on piloting its eBL solution since 2019, COVID-19 has created an even greater drive towards digitising the BL. "The global pandemic has restricted human and transport mobility in many places," André Simha explains. "Countless containers have been stuck at various ports, terminals, depots and warehouses around the world because the receiver doesn't have the original paper BL required to release these goods at their destination."

Here the eBL addresses a very current need, enabling stakeholders to overcome border restrictions, interruptions in postal services and other pandemicrelated disruptions. Shippers can also allow employees to work remotely by dematerialising the BL and other shipping documents.

Worldwide implementation After running successful pilot projects in select countries since 2019, MSC is now introducing its digital solutions to all customers worldwide, paving the way for widespread eBL adoption. MSC is also exploring other eBL platforms to adapt to market demands.

hat innovations and digital services have NEC Corporation launched in the last few years to ease the pain of logisticians in different verticals?

Ans. NEC strives to offer solutions that combine the technologies we have developed over the years to facilitate robust supply chains, including NEC's l o g i s t i c s v i s u a l i z a t i o n s o l u t i o n . We e n a b l e comprehensive monitoring and ensure the best practices for enhanced operations.

We have implemented Integrated Video Analytics (IVA) and Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC), at various port terminals handling containerized cargo. These solutions are deployed for proactive incident prevention and safety, ease the monitoring of the entire selected area for surveillance purposes, and alert staff in case of any emergency trigger, thereby streamlining the overall process as well as adherence to compliances. Apart from this, a suite of NEC's solutions including Edge computing solutions, image based detection system, yard management system, gate automation system, logistics control tower, etc. are helping businesses in streamlining their business processes and leveraging technology effectively.

For instance, NEC Corporation India supported Dubai Port World to transform its port terminals into smart

terminals with the help of effective mobility solutions.

This smart monitoring, detection and alert system is based on NEC’S high-tech Intelligent Video Analytics platform which is handling day to day operations at yards, gates and helping DP World to ensure compliances and handle safety and security concerns at its port terminals in real-time round the clock .

Additionally, during Covid-19 lockdown, NEC continued tagging the Export Import containers at port terminals with RFID tags under its LDB project for seamless information flow related to arrival and handling of essential materials at sea ports. Nearly 600 operators were working round-the-clock in 17 ports (with necessary precautions in place) spread across 9 coastal states. The sudden declaration of the lockdown provided little time for the project team to be prepared with all required resources. However, the team quickly took some critical steps, which turned out to be the differentiator in continuing the operations as an essential service. Besides following covid protocols for the staff, NEC designed new SOP so that operators could maintain social distancing while performing their jobs.

I

n terms of Visibility Solutions, the LDB has been one of your agship programs covering many important ports in India? Is there any pipeline of such innovative solutions in the Ports and Warehousing sector that's worth pitching to the Trade?

Ans. NEC has always been a pioneer in offering technology based solutions to address the business challenges and improve the quality of services and overall value proposition across the stakeholders.

Logistics Databank project which is managed through NLDS (NICDC Logistics Data Services) is a joint venture between the Government of India represented by National Industrial Cor ridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) and NEC Corporation. Its formation effectively leverages Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) across the Indian Logistics Sector.

It inculcates best practices across the various processes towards bringing efficiency to the supply chain and provides nation wide single-window container tracking solutions aimed at supporting businesses in the space of Containerization and addressing higher transaction costs incurred.

Apart from Logistics Databank Project providing Pan India Visibility of export import Container movement, NEC also has wide array of solutions in the space of Warehousing, Gate Automations, Yard management, Asset management, Marketplace models, AI/ML/Block chain based offerings aimed at addressing Indian logistics challenges in terms of process enhancements, seamless movement, adopting best practices and creating value for the Cont’d. Pg. 5 overall trade.

And if low, what needs to be done to scale it up going forward?

Ans. The Internet of Things (IoT) offers limitless possibilities to revolutionize the world. And that holds for the logistic sector. Billions of tiny computers affixed to containers or ports could monitor processes and traffic patterns. And at NEC, we have already implemented this at various sites in India and abroad.

NEC the WISE IoT Platform is a suite of functions for IoT systems based on NEC's cutting-edge AI technologies 'NEC the WISE.' Additionally, our blockchain technologies address problems of security and scalability and are devised specifically to meet industrial standards. For instance, our blockchain platform leverages a high performance Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus layer that is able to process up to 100,000 transactions per second when the network contains 200 blockchain nodes Currently, India is experimenting with emerging technologies in the logistics sector, and we expect that a significant change will take place in this sector especially in overcoming the supply chain issues.

According to CII – Arthur D Little December 2020 report, logistics cost in India stands at 14% of GDP, compared to the global average of approximately 8%.

India can benefit immensely with the implementation of emerging technologies including geo-tagging, big data and auto-capture. These enable collaboration, better forecasting, and traceability which intern monitors supply chains. We are doing our part by implementing NEC’s in-house solutions in various parts of the country.

hat is your message to the Indian trade looking for technological innovation solutions to ease their processes and save time?

Ans. The transportation and Logistics is currently very on-site labor-intensive. While the level of service demand increases, the availability of the workforce fluctuates due to the rise in Coronavirus cases. This makes it difficult to maintain even current levels of services. Hence, to improve services, the industry must experiment with digital transformation and automation tools while at the same time work towards enhancing the skills of the labor aimed at upscaling their skills.

Moreover, to cope with the existing challenges, the industry must employ human-machine partnership harmoniously to facilitate improved operational efficiency while ensuring safe and reliable logistics. For instance, NEC's Logistics Platform includes cuttingedge technologies such as AI, IoT, and image recognition, as well as NEC's supply chain related innovation know-how, which has been cultivated over many years. Hence, industry urgently needs a suite of systems supported by technology to create a logistics network that connects the departments of production,

sales, and logistics through innovation of the logistics workplace.

A

ny other new developments of the company that would benet the Trade in general?

Ans. NEC has plans to expand the portfolio and depth of its solutions and services both in the Indian market and globally. Leveraging key capabilities of our Global Development Centre (GDC) across sectors, including telecom, manufacturing, logistics, etc., is one of our crucial growth drivers. We promote an 'India Go Big' initiative by leveraging our solution development and delivery capability from India to aid global business growth.

The set-up of the first 5G Open Radio Access Networks (ORAN) Laboratory in Chennai is a part of NEC's plan of 'In India For India and From India For global' strategy. This India lab complements the operations of NEC's Centre of Excellence in the UK. Our India team actively works with NEC's team in Japan to leverage the knowledge and best practices across geographies.

Here are some of the latest developments and groundbreaking projects in the pipeline to empower the Government and businesses: 1. Infusing next-gen technology to safety-securitysurveillance and shaping opportunity landscape across the country and Biometrics in Airports: • To ensure faster check-ins and citizens' safety, we deploy biometric technology at Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in Varanasi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport in Kolkata, Pune airport, and Vijayawada airport. Besides the above four airports where we are currently deploying the system, we had done pilot projects for the solution at Hyderabad and Delhi Airport in the recent past • Awarded project from UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) for the Biometric Service Providers Phase III to provide large scale multi-modal biometrics solutions for the National Identification Program (Aadhaar), world's largest biometric national ID digital platform 2. Demonstrating unparalleled leadership in bringing efficiency to logistics operations: • We launched container tracking services at Pipavav Port, Rajula Saurashtra in Gujarat in November. With this expansion, NLDS would now be operational across 17 ports, handling 100% of India's container volume.

Enhancing public transport experience via newage tech solutions implementation across Metro AFC, Smart City projects, Intelligent State Buses, and Metro Communication: • NEC India signed a strategic partnership with UMTC (a public sector unit under Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs; Government of India) to jointly develop intelligent mobility solutions in rural and urban India • We won the Mowasalat Qatar project for a period of 4 years to procure around 3000 smart buses to be used for Public Transportation during FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

ONE conducts successful second trial use of Sustainable Biofuel for Decarbonization SINGAPORE: Ocean Network Express (ONE) is pleased to announce the successful completion of a second trial of sustainable marine biofuel onboard the M/V MOL Experience.

The specifications of the second trial were different from the first trial, with the mixing ratio three times higher in biofuel content, taking ONE another step closer to reducing its carbon footprint.

M/V MOL Experience was refuelled with marine biofuel during bunkering at the Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands on 7th March 2021. The vessel, deployed in AL5 service, fully consumed the biofuel 24 days into the 36-day trial period, which ended on 12th April 2021.

As with the first trial, the bunkering and testing period was performed in collaboration with shipowner Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and the leading sustainable biofuel pioneer GoodFuels. The success of the trial once again proves the viability of sustainable biofuels, while helping ONE to meet its carbon reduction targets by 2030 and 2050 respectively.

Biofuel is a fuel that is derived from renewable sources. The advanced biofuel used in the trial is produced from certified feedstocks labelled as 100% waste or residue, such as used cooking oil. Biofuels are considered to be carbon-neutral because the carbon dioxide absorbed by the source of the biomass is equal to the carbon dioxide released when the fuel is burned. It has gained attention around the world as an environmentally-friendly alternative to fossil fuels.

GoodFuels' sustainable biofuels are virtually free of sulphur oxides and deliver 80 to 90% well-to-exhaust CO2 reduction versus fossil fuel equivalents. They are technically and operationally equivalent to petroleum-derived marine fuels and require no modifications to marine engines or fuel infrastructure. GoodFuels only works with renewable feedstocks that cannot be used for any higher quality application

or recycling and are therefore regarded as truly sustainable.

The biofuel trial marks a positive step forward for ONE's sustainability initiatives, which includes four areas of priority: Environment; Social; Governance; and Operational Excellence. The use of biofuels will help address its environmental sustainability targets, which aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions (in gram/teu-km) by 25% from its 2018 baseline by 2030, and by 50% by 2050.

Wan Hai Lines holds Online Ship Naming Ceremony for New Vessels accompanied by a Charity Donation TAIPEI: Wan Hai Lines Ltd. held ship naming ceremonies for WAN HAI 285 and WAN HAI 286 accompanied by a charity donation today (27. Apr.).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a physical ceremony was replaced by an online one.

WAN HAI 285 and WAN HAI 286 are the 2nd、3rd vessels in a series of 2,038 teu containerships built by China Shipbuilding Trading Co., LTD., and Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard Co., LTD. Ms. Chiu-Mei Cheng, Board Member‧General Manager of TAIWAN KIRIN COMPANY, LIMITED and Ms. Connie Chu, Managing Director & Head, Client Coverage, CCIB Taiwan of Standard Chartered Bank (Taiwan) Limited, named these two vessels respectively during the ceremony.

The 2,038 teu series is designed with LOA 175m, deadweight capacity of 23,802 mt on 10.5 m draft and a maximum cruising speed of 20.66 nautical miles. The design of 2,038 teu series takes energy efficiency and environmentally-friendly aspect into account. Moreover, all the ships delivered are certified with “Smart Ship” notations by inter national well-known classification societies. The newbuildings are part of Wan Hai Lines efforts to ensure their continuous pursuit of fleet upgrade in order to provide most quality service to customers.

WAN HAI 285 will be delivered on April 30th at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard. After delivery, she will join Wan Hai Lines’

Japan-Vietnam-Malaysia service to provide efficient delivery service between Japan, Vietnam and Malaysia.

In addition to naming the newbuildings, Wan Hai Lines also made charity donations to PanYu Social Welfare Institution, GuangZhou and Guangdong Huiling Foundation for People with Intellectual Development Disabilities , two local welfare organizations focusing on care for socially disadvantaged elders, children and youth. Organic food products exports rise by more than 50 % in FY ‘21 despite COVID-19 challenges NEW DELHI: India’s export of Organic food products rose by 51% in terms of value (USD Million), to USD 1040 million (Rs 7078 crores) during financial year 2020-21 compared to the previous fiscal (2019-20).

In terms of quantity, the exports of organic food products grew by 39% to 888,179 metric tonne (MT) during FY 2020-21 compared to 638,998 MT shipped in 2019-20. The growth in organic products has been achieved despite logistical and operational challenges posed by the COVID19 pandemic.

Oil cake meal has been a major commodity of the organic product exports from the country followed by oil seeds, fruit pulps and purees, cereals & millets, spices & condiments, tea, medicinal plant products, dry fruits, sugar, pulses, coffee, essential Oil etc.

India’s organic products have been

exported to 58 countries including USA, European Union, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Switzerland, Israel, South Korea.

Dr M Ang amuthu, C hair man, APEDA, stated that Indian organic products, nutraceuticals and health food are gaining more demand in overseas market.

Organic products are currently exported from India only if they are produced, processed, packed and labelled as per the requirements of the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP). The NPOP has been implemented by APEDA since its inception in 2001 as notified under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulations) Act, 1992.

The NPOP certification has been recognised by the European Union and Switzerland which enables India to

export unprocessed plant products to these countries without the requirement of additional certification.

The equivalency with EU also facilitates export of Indian organic products to the United Kingdom even in the post Brexit phase.

In order to facilitate the trade between major importing countries, negotiations are underway with Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Australia, UAE, New Zealand for achieving Mutual Recognition Agreements for exports of Organic products from India.

NPOP has also been recognized by the Food Safety Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) for trade of organic products in the domestic market.

Organic products covered under the bilateral agreement with NPOP need not to be recertified for import in India.

US President to push for IMO adoption of zero emissions goal for shipping by 2050 WA S H I N G T O N : T h e B i d e n administration has committed to working with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to adopt a goal of achieving zero emissions from international shipping by 2050.

The White House said it would aim to adopt ambitious measures that will place the sector on a pathway to achieve this goal.

This would up the ante for the IMO, which has set out to cut CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2030, and at least halve its emissions by 2050, compared with 2008 levels, and subsequently head for a complete phase-out.

The targets have been deemed rather unambitious by many progressive governments. However,

achieving even these objectives will pose a major challenge for the shipping industry as it looks to ways of financing its transition and defining the path toward decarbonization.

Specifically, choosing the right technologies and developing alternative net-zero fuels for the maritime industry accompanied by the relevant infrastructure is expected to be a gargantuan task. The pledge is being made on the back of a major climate summit hosted by Biden as he looks to restore the place of the U.S. as the world’s front-runner in the fight against climate change.

The U.S. President announced that the United States will target reducing emissions by 50-52 percent by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. He

underscored America’s commitment to leading a clean energy revolution and creating good-paying, union jobs – noting that the countries that take decisive action now will reap the economic benefits of the future.

As part of the massive clean energy s t r a t e g y, t h e B i d e n - H a r r i s Administration plans to quadruple clean energy innovation funding over the next four years.

The White House said the country would be advancing international collaboration on innovation and supporting the launch of Mission Innovation 2.0, an international technology mission on carbon dioxide removal set to be promoted at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).

India's GDP to grow at 11% this scal, fresh virus spike may put recovery at risk, says ADB MANILA: The Indian economy is projected to grow at 11 % in the current financial year amid the "strong" vaccine drive, said ADB on Wednesday, while cautioning that the recent surge in COVID cases may put the country's economic recovery at "risk". "India's economy is expected to grow 11 % in fiscal year (FY) 2021, which ends on March 31, 2022, amid a strong vaccine drive," ADB said in its flagship Asian

Development Outlook (ADO) 2021 released.

H o w e v e r, t h e A s i a n Development Bank (ADB) cautioned that the surge in COVID19 cases may put the countr y's economic recovery at risk.

For FY2022, India's GDP is expected to expand at 7 %, it added.

Further, it said the gross domestic product (GDP) of South Asia is expected

to rebound to 9.5 % this year, following a contraction of 6 % in 2020, before moderating to 6.6 % next year (2022), it said.

ADB said the economic growth in developing Asia is set to rebound to 7.3 % this year, supported by a healthy global recovery and an early progress on COVID-19 vaccines. The projected resurgence follows a 0.2 % contraction last year.

Tapping the future of shipping – Hapag-Lloyd published new sustainability report •Sulphur oxides reduced by 70% compared to the previous year •Additional fuel savings achieved through ship optimisations •New propulsion concepts tested, and state-of-the-art ships ordered •Focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees •New sustainability strategy with concrete goals to be published later this year HAMBURG: Hapag-Lloyd published its Sustainability Report 2020 today and has once again made significant progress in environmental, social, qualitative and economic terms: Since the beginning of last year, Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet has been operating using IMO 2020compliant low-sulphur fuel oil, thereby reducing its sulphur-oxide emissions by roughly 70 percent compared to 2019. In addition, fuel savings of around 15 percent were achieved on 39 vessels by removing fouling from their outer hulls. At the same time, Hapag-Lloyd is the first shipping company in the world that has converted a large container ship to dual-fuel propulsion, which can operate using liquefied natural gas (LNG). Furthermore, in an initial test phase, biofuels based on used cooking oil were used. Moreover, orders have been placed for six state-of-the-art container ships – each with a capacity of more than 23,500 TEU – whose fuel-efficient highpressure dual-fuel engines will also be able to operate using LNG, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by between roughly 15 and 25 percent. These newbuilding projects geared towards sustainability have been financed by two green financing transactions, which were concluded according to the Green Loan Principles of

the Loan Market Association (LMA).

Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the safety and well-being of employees had a particularly high priority during the year under review, with the result that more than 90 percent of our land-based employees were working from home at times. However, great demands were also placed on the seafarers on board our ships, as crew changes were made considerably more difficult by multiple entry restrictions and many of them had to stay on board much longer than originally planned. For this reason, considerable efforts were also made to get them back to their families and loved ones safely and as quickly as possible.

However, the biggest challenge in the years ahead will continue to be climate change, and more will need to be invested in research and development related to propulsion concepts and fuels if we are to reach the goal of achieving climate neutrality in shipping. Shipping already accounts for 3 percent of all CO2 emissions today, and this must be further reduced in the future. That is also why our new sustainability report bears the title: “Tapping the future of shipping”. Of course, container ships are still the most efficient means of transporting large quantities of goods, including from an

environmental point of view. Yet even with these efficiency-related advantages, it is clear that much more needs to be done for climate protection.

“We have made a lot of progress in all sustainability dimensions. At the same time, we are conscious of the fact that we also have a very great responsibility when it comes to climate protection. We will therefore continue to work hard to modernise our fleet and to reduce our carbon footprint. This will likewise remain an essential part of our new sustainability strategy, which we will be publishing later this year. At its core, it is about continuously increasing our contribution to sustainability-related efforts and making incremental improvements,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.

With its new sustainability strategy, Hapag-Lloyd will set itself specific targets for the next 10 years. One was already announced in March 2021, when HapagLloyd successfully placed a “sustainability-linked bond” that is connected to a clearly defined sustainability target: By 2030, the CO2 intensity of Hapag-Lloyd’s own fleet is to be reduced by 60 percent compared with 2008, the reference year of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Maximizing Operational Efficiency for Logistics and Supply Chain, Using AI and Big Data

he ongoing pandemic has disrupted economies, businesses, and daily lives of people the world over, creating a new normal that we are forced to adjust to. With instances of partial or complete lockdowns across various parts of the country, the logistics and supply chain sector has been under tremendous stress, catering to the surge in e-retail, no contact deliveries, reverse logistics, added stress on warehouse management, and a sudden spotlight on temperature controlled supply chain for a massive vaccination drive. And these trying times have accelerated the adoption of emerging tech like AI, ML, blockchain, and big data innovations, opening up bigger possibilities for the transformation of the Indian logistic and supply chain sector.

Listed here 5 areas where AI and emerging tech can help optimise the sector: 1. Improved Demand and Network Planning: Leveraging big data and advanced analytics, logistics and supply chain providers can simplify distribution networks, through effectively mapping the demand concentrations, and accordingly set up an optimised supply chain networks. This also helps in optimising warehousing costs, while shortening the order-to-delivery cycle time, a crucial aspect especially during the pandemic and the lockdown.
