PARIS: The world economy will take a bigger hit than previously forecastnextyearduetotheeffectsof Russia's war in Ukraine, the OECD saidrecent.
In a bleak report titled "paying the price of war", the Paris-based organisation noted that the conflict aggravated inflationary pressure when the cost of living was already risingquickly.
"The world is paying a very heavy price for Russia's aggression against Ukraine," OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said in a news conference. "Households and firms are suffering as costs rise and purchasing power is taking a hit," Cormannsaid.
Covidoutbreaksarestillhavingan impact on the global economy while growth has also been affected by
rising interest rates as central banks scramble to cool red-hot prices, the OECDsaid.
"A number of indicators have taken a turn for the worse, and the global growth outlook has darkened," the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said inthereport.
Global growth stalled in the secondquarterofthisyearanddatain many economies "now point to an extended period of subdued growth", theOECDsaid.
The organisation slashed its 2023 growth forecast for the global economy to 2.2 percent, down from 2.8 percent in its previous estimate in June. "The central scenario is not a global recession, but risks have increased in the past few months," said the OECD's interim Chief
Economist Alvaro Pereira.
German recession - The outlook for nearly all nations in the Group of 20 top economies was cut, except for Turkey,IndonesiaandBritain, though the latter is forecast to have zero growth.
Growth in the United States -- the world's biggest economy -- is forecast toslowto0.5percentin2023.
The growth forecast for China, whose economy has been hit by strict Covid lockdowns, was cut sharply for this year to 3.2 percent while it was slightly lower to 4.7percentfor2023.
However it has retained the GDP growth projections for India at 6.9 per cent for the current financial year despite the global economy losing momentum in wake of the Russia-Ukrainewar.
NEW YORK: S&P Global Ratings on Monday projected India’s economic growth at 7.3 per cent for FY23 with downsiderisks.Theglobalratingagency in its Economic Outlook for Asia Pacific 2022 report said that inflation is likely to remain above RBI’s upper tolerance thresholdof6percenttilltheendof2022. India’s growth next year will get support from domestic demand recovery after the coronavirus pandemic, it added.
“We have retained our India growth outlook at 7.3 per cent for the fiscal year 2022-2023 and 6.5 per cent for the next fiscalyear, althoughweseetheriskstilted tothedownside,”theratingagencysaid.
On inflation, S&P Global Ratings pegged the average rate in the current fiscal at 6.8 per cent and projected it to fall to 5 per cent in FY24 beginning April 2023. “India’s headline Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) is likely to remain
outside the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance limit of 6 per cent until the end of 2022. That’s amid substantial weather-induced wheat and rice price increases as well as sticky core inflation. And food inflation may rise again,” the agency noted. According to thereport, elevatedcoreinflationwould drive up policy rates further in India, and projected CY22 terminal interest ratesat5.90percent.

Karnataka is the only coastal state that does not have a privately run NonMajor Port (those administered by the State Government) to boast. The state has a Major Port at New Mangalore which is administered and run by the UnionGovernment.
Under the single stage bidding, potentialbiddersarerequiredtosubmit
their qualification documents and price bids in one go. But the financial bids of onlythosewhomeettheexperienceand financial capability criteria and qualify forthetenderwillbeopened.
In comparison, a two-stage bidding process, typically followed by governmentagenciesforinfrastructure projects, has a request for qualification (RFQ) round followed by a request for proposal (RFP) stage for price bids. In this format, the price bids will be called only from those bidders who are qualifiedforthetender.
The planned mega ports at Keni and Pavinakurve were announced by Chief MinisterBommaiinhisbudgetspeech.
“There are merits of both single
stage and multistage processes; multistage processes take a lot of time and generally have a longer window for the finalisation of the project,” said an Executive with the project management consultancy firm hired by the Karnataka government to oversee thetenderingprocess.
We want to initiate actions fast so that we have a real impact on society. Itwouldbewrongtosaythatitisasingle stageprocess, wefloatedexpressionsof interest (EoI) last year for the projects wherein multiple players had shown interest. After that, we have taken permission from the State Government to go for the single stage bidding process,”hesaid.
MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Government is planning for a major overhaul of the state's infrastructure- from airports and ports to expressways to railway networks -that is estimated to cost anywhere north of Rs.5-6 lakh crore, but which could give the State a much-needed facelift. The War Room, a brainchild of Devendra Fadnavis when he first took over as chief minister in 2014, is back in action and this time there are grander plans.
Some of the new projects planned include creating an Expressway grid
comprising 6-8 lanes that connects all districts of the state. State Government officials said nine new Expressways were being planned, one of which is going to be the Pune-Nashik eight-lane Expressway. The estimated cost of these nine expressways could be aroundRs2.35lakhcrore.
The War Room is also planning a Mumbai to Konkan six-lane Expressway that would originate from Pen near Panvel to Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg, which will cost around '80,000 crore. Those involved in the planning of the Mumbai-Konkan
Expressway said that instead of the long-winding routes between Mumbai and Konkan currently available, the new expressways would be straight roads cutting across all coastal districts.
Keen to ensure faster execution of these projects, the Maharashtra government has appointed IAS officer Radhyesham Mopalwar as Director General (War Room-Infrastructure) in chargeoftheWarRoom.Heisknownfor thespeedyexecutionofprojectslikethe Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai to NagpurSuperExpressway).
WASHINGTON: From seaport docks inLosAngelesandLiverpooltorailyards in Chicago and warehouses in Europe and the U.S., clashes between cargo workers and management have been rising this year, adding complications and uncertainty to the flow of goods around the world, according to a Wall StreetJournal(WSJ)report.
A two-week strike that dockworkers at the U.K.’s Liverpool port launched recently is the latest in a series of walkouts to hit the country’s transportation networks, and follows an agreement in the U.S. last week that averted a potential nationwide freightrailstrikehoursbeforeitwasset tobegin.
The conflicts count a range of workers that handle freight around the world, from truck drivers in South Korea to package sorters at Amazon distribution centers in New York, who are newly emboldened to press for higher pay and better working conditions after more than two years of stressedbusinessduringthepandemic.
Frontline workers are “tired of being called essential and treated as expendable,” said Liz Shuler, President of the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of labor unions in the U.S. “Idothinkthisisemblematicofwhatwe have seen and what we are going to continuetosee.”
Some of the labor battles, including the strikes at Liverpool and at the Port of Felixstowe in the U.K., have shut down freight transport operations for a time. Others, such as the near-strike against U.S. railroads and ongoing contract talks involving U.S. West Coast dockworkers, have triggered contingency planning by businesses bracingforbroaderimpact.
High inflation is adding to the pressure for higher wages. Workers at Liverpool’s port rejected a contract offer that included an 8.3% annual pay increase, and the Unite union said that
fell short of increases in consumer prices.
In South Korea, truck drivers snarled the country’s export-driven supply chains in June when they stopped working for a week in a dispute over pay and the drivers’ demand for subsidiestocoverrisingfuelcosts.
Companies say the conflicts have made logistics planning more difficult and exacerbated strains caused by supply-chain shocks such as the recent Covid-19 shutdowns in China and the warinUkraine.
“It doesn’t take a lot of disruption to cause massive effects on supply chains and incur additional costs for importers and exporters worldwide,” said Morten Landry, Managing Director for Air and Sea in the U.K. and Ireland forDanishFreightForwarderDSVA/S.
DSVinrecentmonthshasnavigated strikes at Felixstowe, Britain’s busiest container port, and at Hamburg in Germany. Mr. Landry said the company tries to rapidly shift cargo to alternative ports when a gateway closes, a change that triggers a scramble for trucks, drivers and freight-handling equipment at those ports and which has led to delaysandhighercosts.
Dockworkers at Felixstowe walked off the job for eight days in August and plan a second eight-day strike starting Sept. 27 in a push for higher wage increases. A series of strikes at North Sea ports in Germany, including Hamburg, one of Europe’s busiest container ports, disrupted operations formonthsbeforeacontractagreement wasreachedinlateAugust.
In the U.S., strikes have become more common this year, according to labor experts, as workers from teachers to nursing-home staff take to picket lines overpayandquality-of-lifedemands.
Truck drivers effectively shut down the West Coast’s third-busiest port at Oakland, Calif., for one week in July as they picketed outside of terminals to
protest a state law that they said makes it harder for them to operate as independentcontractors.
Workers at an Amazon.com Inc. warehouse in New York City in April voted to form the e-commerce giant’s first union in the U.S., and staffers at an Amazon site in upstate New York are scheduled to hold a union election next month. Amazon workers in the U.K. have held walkouts as they push for an increaseintheirhourlywage.
The Biden administration narrowly avoided a systemwide freight rail shutdown last week after brokering a last-minute deal between railroads and unions. That tentative contract agreement between two holdout unions must still be ratified by rank-and-file members, while one of several unions that negotiated separate agreements with the railroads will try again for a deal after its membership rejected the contractterms.
At U.S. ports, retailers and manufacturers are diverting tens of thousands of containers from the West Coast to East Coast gateways because of concerns that contract talks between dockworkers and employers from Washington state to Southern Californiacouldsparkdisruptions.
“It has been a really unprecedented year,” said Harry Chase, Senior Director for Central Materials at GE Appliances, a subsidiary of Chinese home appliances and electronics company Haier Group Corp. “This has been the first time that we’ve seen a combination all across the world of differentlaborunrest.”
Mr. Chase said some GE Appliances shipmentshavebeendelayedatportsin Belgium, France and Italy that were overwhelmed by cargo diverted from strikingGermanports.
“Itreallycausedustobeflexibleand move different containers to different portsthatwenormallywouldn’tflowout of,”Mr.Chasesaid.
