MUMBAI: Allcargo Logistics Limited has announced its financial results for the quarter ended March 31, 2024.

India in trade deficit with 9 of Top 10 trading partners in 2023-24

NEW DELHI: India has recorded a trade deficit, the difference between imports and exports, with nine of its top 10 trading partners, including China, Russia, Singapore, and Korea, in 2023-24, according to official data. The data also showed that the deficit with China, Russia, Korea, and Hong Kong increased in the last fiscal compared to 2022-23, while the trade gap with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Russia,Indonesia,andIraqnarrowed.

The trade deficit with China rose to USD 85 billion, Russia to USD 57 2 billion, Korea to USD 14 71 billion and Hong Kong to USD 12 2 billion in 2023-24 against USD 83 2 billion, USD 43 billion, USD 14 57 billion and USD 8 38 billion, respectively, in 2022-23

China has emerged as India’s largest trading partner with USD 118.4 billion of two-way commerce in 2023-24, edging past the US.

The bilateral trade between India and the US stood at USD 118.28 billion in 2023-24. Washington was the top

India has a free trade agreement with four of its top trading partners –Singapore, the UAE, Korea and Indonesia (as part of the Asian bloc).

India has a trade surplus of USD 36.74 billion with the US in 2023-24. America is one of the few countries with which India has a trade surplus. The surplus is also there with the UK, Belgium,Italy,FranceandBangladesh.

India’s total trade deficit in the last fiscal narrowed to USD 238.3 billion as against USD 264 9 billion in the previous fiscal.

According to trade experts, a deficit is not always bad, if a country is i

Economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that a bilateral trade deficit with a country isn’t a major issue unless it makes us

overly reliant on that country’s critical supplies. However, a rising overall trade deficit is harmful to the economy.

“A rising trade deficit, even from i

country’s currency to depreciate because more foreign currency is needed for imports. This depreciation makes imports more expensive, worsening the deficit,” GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

He said that to cover the growing deficit, the country might need to borrow more from foreign lenders, increasing external debt and this can deplete foreign exchange reserves and signal economic instability to investors, leading to reduced foreign investment.

Ports set to win O&M contract for

Container

handling at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port

KOLKATA: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s biggest private port operator, is set to win the rights to handle containers from five berths at Netaji Subhas Dock of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (erstwhile Kolkata Port Trust) on operation and maintenance (O&M) contract for five years.

APSEZ, the only bidder to place a price bid for the contract, quoted some Rs 2,100 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), which is well within the ceiling rate set by the port authority to emerge the successful bidder, multiple sources said, adding that the deal would help the port operator bolster its presence in the eastern coast port, one of the 12 owned by the Union government.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority had set a ceiling rate of Rs 2,127 (excluding GST) per loaded TEU Marine Freight Container (in case of berths equipped with mobile harbour cranes) for the project.

The private firm quoting the lowest rate for handling a loaded container within the ceiling rate of Rs 2,127 would win the five-year deal, a c c o r d i n g t o t e n d e r t e r m s .

This amount will be paid by the port authority to the private operator, per the O&M contract.

“The price bid of APSEZ will be submitted to the board of the port authority for approval and the tender will be awarded after the model code of conduct for the on-going elections is lifted,” a government official briefed on the tender details, said.

The private operator will have to i n v e s t s o m e R s 5 6 9 8 5 c r o r e (excluding GST) to erect equipment such as 4 Mobile Harbour Cranes (to be available on round the clock basis) and two more MHC’s to be kept as standby, 3 Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTG), 12 Reach Stackers (RST) and 35 Tractor Trailers (TT)

The port authority will provide 4 berths for MHC operations and 1 nonMHC berth for handling containers from geared vessels. The private operator may also have to operate geared vessels in MHC berths.

APSEZ is expected to start operating the five berths in November after the current ten-year contract run by Bharat Kolkata Container Terminals Pvt Ltd (a wholly owned unit of Singapore’s PSA International Pte Ltd) ends.

While Bharat Kolkata Container Terminals is operating 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 berths of Netaji Subhas Dock, the new O&M operator will be given 1,2,3,4 and

5 berths of NSD for five years.

Simultaneously, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority has floated a tender to privatise NSD berths 7 and 8 along with back-up area of 25 acres on public-private-partnership (PPP) model for 30 years, with a capacity to handle some 5 lakh TEUs.

“After the five-year O&M contract ends, the berths 1 to 5, having a capacity to handle about 7 lakh TEUs, will also be privatised on PPP model for 30 years,” the government official said.

The O&M deal will be APSEZ’s second terminal in Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

In 2023, APSEZ secured a 30-year contract to mechanise berth No 2 at Haldia Dock with an investment of Rs 298.26 crore to handle 3.744 million tons (mt) of dry bulk cargo.

“APSEZ’s footprint in West Bengal is only at Haldia Dock with a dry cargo handling berth which will start operations in 2025. But, in the container space, it doesn’t have a p r e s e n c e . Ko l k a t a i s a l a r g e consuming market and also caters to the container traffic of Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. From the point of view of ports and logistics, APSEZ cannot be a relevant pan India container terminal operator without having a footprint in Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port,” said an industry source.

MSC Anna is a huge vessel with an overall length of 399.98 m (roughly the length of four football fields) and a staggering capacity of 19,200 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), which makes it the largest container ship by capacity to ever visit an Indian port, APSEZ said in a statement.

Its ar rival draf t is 16 3 m, which can be accommodated only at Adani Ports, Mundra, as no other port in India is capable of berthing a deep-draft vessel, it added.

In July 2023, Adani Ports, Mundra created a record by berthing MV MSC Hamburg, one of the longest container ships in the world, with overall length of 399 m and capacity of 16,652 TEUS.

Further, the statement said its container terminal CT-3 reached a significant milestone by becoming the first in India to manage 3 milion TEUS in a year

The terminal also achieved a monthly handling record of over 3,00,000 TEUS in November, the highest ever by any terminal in India.

Panama Canal returns to normal operations

PANAMA: Increased water levels in the Panama Canal have ignited hopes of a potential return to normal operations for container shipping following a year of restrictions due to severe drought. However, while the situation may be improving, experts warn that the canal is far from returning to pre-restriction levels, Newsroom Panama said.

The Panama Canal Authority has increased the daily number of ships allowed, from 24 to 31. The increase will provide limited relief for shipping services; however a more meaningful

change is anticipated by June 1, with additional transit slots for larger ships, which will raise the daily total to 32.

As the Panama Canal slowly transitions towards normal operations, businesses need to be prepared for a slow recovery dependent on unpredictable factors, such as rainfall. While hopes are high for a “normal” return, the reality may be different.

It is becoming clear that the impact of the drought in the Panama Canal may be felt for years, rather than months.

16 new Metro Rail coaches unloaded at Syama Prasad

KOLKATA: The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has announced that it has successfully discharged the second batch of Metro Rail coaches which were unloaded at the Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD) of the port.

A statement issued by the port stated that on May 23, 16 Metro Rail coaches, each weighing 48 tons, were efficiently unloaded at Netaji Subhash Dock of SMPK.

“These state-of-the-art coaches, destined for the Eastern Railway, were meticulously manufactured by Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Company, known for their fabulous engineering and quality,” read the statement. A Panama flagged vessel ‘MV Bosi 58’ arrived at NSD under Kolkata Dock System of SMP on May 22.

Mr. Rathendra Raman, Chairperson, SMPK expressed gratitude to Eastern Railway for entrusting the Kolkata Port with this critical task. He also lauded the dedicated efforts of the team and trade partners who accomplished the operation.

Mr. Raman further stated that the success underscores our commitment to supporting development in the eastern

region of the nation and facilitating heavy infrastructure projects, reinforcing Kolkata’s position as a dynamic and progressive metropolis.

China pips US to be India’s largest trade partner in FY24

NEW DELHI: While China emerged as India’s largest goods trading partner, outdoing the US by a modest $ 116 million in the last financial year, it is the US that has delivered consistent trade surpluses for India year on year Merchandise trade with China stood at $ 118.4 billion in FY 24 on the back of 4.04% growth while with the US there was a contraction of 8.59% to $ 118.2 billion. India’s exports to the US had dropped 1.3% to $ 77.5 billion while imports were down 19.8% to 40.7 billion. In China’s case the exports grew 8.8% to $ 16.6 billion and imports were up 3.29% to $ 101.7 billion. That is, trade deficit with China crossed the $85 billion mark.

India’s exports suffered from the economic slowdown in the US as the biggest fall was seen in exports of gems and jewellery, apparel and even chemicals though some of the loss was covered by smartphones. India’s imports from the US were down largely due to a drop in petroleum trade

A lower interest rate environment and return of demand in the US could tilt the balance in favour of the US again Already in April the US is ahead of China with total trade of $ 11 8 billion as against $ 8 8 billion with the northern neighbour In the US trade in April balance is in India’s favour

With the US, India also has a consistent services trade surplus.

From China the biggest item of import in FY 24 was machinery of all kinds accounting for almost 50% of total imports. Other major items of imports from China were plastics and its articles, chemicals, steel and steel products and fertilisers.

The pursuit of greater trade integration with the West is what would aid India’s ambitions as only with countries in Europe and the US does it enjoy trade surpluses while with the east the closer ties have only delivered deficits that widen with each passing year

Red Sea crisis: Government must come to the rescue of MSME exporters

NEW DELHI: Logistics cost has serious implications on the country’s manufacturing sector, export competitiveness and global positioning The Red Sea route, which is shorter and faster, was the preferred choice for most shipping companies Ships transporting goods from major Indian ports like Mumbai and JNPT navigated through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea to reach various Europeanportsdependingontheirdestinations.

India was heavily reliant on this route for trade and energy imports and due to the disruptions; exporters here now have to diversify their trade routes. Since the security situation in the Red Sea has started getting worse, it has resulted in higher insurance rates and more travel time for the exporters.

Major shipping companies like Equinor and Maersk have increased their costs which is hitting the Indian companies very hard Disruption in freight services consequent to the deluge and almost a 50 per cent increase in air freight charges have affected the export of perishable goods like vegetables, flowers, fruits, and eggs to the UK, the US and among other parts of the world.

Exporters are keeping their fingers crossed due to the significant jump in freight costs at present. India’s exports will surely be impacted due to the increase in freight costs.

In the year 2023-24, Indian exports had a big increase in

terms of volume as well as money The total exports for the financial year were worth nearly $450 billion and MSMEs had played a major role in the exports.

The Indian research and information systems has estimated that higher container shipping rates and delayed shipments due to change in the route could cause a significant drop in Indian exports in the coming year

The global supply chains have suffered as vessels have to take long routes for exports and imports. The immediate ripple effects are seen in increased freight costs and small and medium Industries in India will be its major victim.

The entire world is in a credit crisis and may possibly not be in a position to take this hit. Government agencies need to come to the rescue of MSME sector to keep up the growth engine and also to reach a $5 trillion economy Especially for the perishable goods, new markets need to be sourced in the Asian and the far eastern regions.

Control over the export container pricing could also be thought about with some incentive mechanism on an immediate basis that could help turn the tide. Since the seasonal perishable goods could be the first casualty, an urgent solution from the economic luminaries within the government should be forthcoming.
