PIL : Successful completion of Intermodal Service from India to Ethiopia

SINGAPORE: PIL successfully delivered 10 TEUs or five 40’ HC containers of cargo on 12 April 2023, through its intermodal service of ship and trucks, from India to Ethiopia via Djibouti in East Africa, informsarecentcommuniquefromPIL.

It was all the more meaningful for PIL as the cargo was meant for humanitarian aid for the needy in Ethiopia. The total duration taken for the shipment to depart India and arrive at Ethiopia, inland at East Africa, was less than 35days. Cont’d. Pg. 6

PIL is happy to have contributed to transporting the much needed aid items in a timely manner to the people in Ethiopia, and it will continue to expand its network of intermodal services to meet the growing needs for efficientcross-bordertransportation.

A.P. Moller – Maersk welcomes landmark green methanol vessel in Copenhagen this fall

COPENHAGEN:

To celebrate the world’s first container vessel sailing on green methanol, A.P. Moller - Maersk will host a week of festivities, including the name giving event and other activitiesSeptember18–21inCopenhagen, Denmark. The 2,100 TEU feeder vessel is a small piece of history in the shipping industry.

The dual-fuel engine vessel will pause in Copenhagen right outside the Maersk headquarters on its way to the Baltic Sea, where she will be operating going forward. Thefeedervesselwillbringrealexperience for Maersk seafarers in operating the new type of fuel, as the company prepares to receive a fleet of new, large ocean-going dual-fuelenginepoweredshipsfrom2024.

A.P. Moller – Maersk aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2040 across the entire business. To get there in time, the company aims to transport a minimum 25% of Oceancargousinggreenfuelsby2030comparedtoa2020 baseline.Receivingthelandmarkdual-fuelenginefeeder vessel is a major step toward the long-term objective of gradually renewing the entire A.P. Moller – Maersk fleet to operate solely on green fuels and making a tangible impactintheindustry’seffortstoreducegreenhousegas emissions.

The 172-meter-long vessel will leave the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Korea this summer to embark on her maiden voyage to Copenhagen. The vessel will have a container capacity of 2,100 TEU and she sails at a designedspeedof17,4knots.

During her week in Copenhagen, the vessel will formally receive her name during a ceremony at Toldboden, next to the A.P. Moller – Maersk headquarter. A.P. Moller – Maersk will host events for employees, partners,investors,studentsandtheareawillbeopenfor the public to take a closer look at the new vessel from the dock and learn more about the efforts to decarbonise the shippingindustry.

Global Air cargo sees steady decline as rates plummet 37%

LONDON: Global air cargo demand is maintaining its decline in line with generalcontainerdemand,accordingto preliminary figures from WorldACD MarketData.

For the first two weeks of April 2023, chargeable weight on cargo planes was down 12 percent when comparing the overall global air cargo market from a year ago. This represented a return to the double-digit percentage declines seen in the preceding five months to March—which saw an 8 percent yearover-yearweightdecline.

Figures for the week of April 10-16 show a continuation of the decreasing

trendinaircargotonnagesobservedsince mid-March, with a week-over-week drop of just 2 percent compared to a 8 percent declinereportedonApril3basedonmore than 400,000 weekly transactions covered byWorldACD’sdata.

Notable percentage decreases in year-over-year tonnages were seen on flights exiting North America (down 25percent)andEurope(18percent).

Overall air freight capacity is up 12 percent compared with 2022, with double-digit percentage increases from almost all regions, except from Central and South America, which was slightly down at 2 percent, and North America,

which saw a 5 percent increase. The most-notable increases were flights out of Asia Pacific (33 percent) andAfrica(19percent).

Worldwide air cargo rates plummeted 37 percent below their levels from a year ago, at an average of $2.56perkilogramsfortheweekofApril 10-16, despite the effects of higher fuel surcharges, although they remain significantly above pre-Covid levels. Rates have dropped off 6 percent from four weeks prior, when they were $2.73 per kilogram. For the comparable week in 2022, air cargo rates averaged $4.11perkilogram.

Ports of Singapore, Los Angeles and Long Beach ink Green and Digital Shipping agreement

SINGAPORE: The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA Singapore), Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach, with the support of C40 Cities, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in order to establish a green and digital shipping corridor between Singapore and the SanPedroBayportscomplex.

The agreement of the major global container ports is expected to support the decarbonisation of the maritime industry and improve efficiencies throughdigitalisation.

Inparticular,C40isthefacilitatorof the green and digital shipping corridor, providing support to the cities, ports, and their corridor partners by coordinating, convening, facilitating, and providing communications support.

Ahead of the revision of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Initial Strategy for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships in July 2023, the three ports will come together with the C40 Cities network and other stakeholders in the

maritime and energy value chains, to jointlyacceleratethedecarbonisationof the maritime industry in line with the goalsofIMO.

The memorandum also builds on the ports’ long-standing cooperation through platforms such as the Port Authorities’ Roundtable and chainPORT, and complements bilateral initiatives between Singapore and the United States such as the US-Singapore Climate Partnership and the US-Singapore Partnership for growthandinnovation.

NOIDA: Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR), a Navratna PSU of Govt. of India, Ministry of Railways organised a Trade Meet on 26th April, 2023 at Hotel Crowne Plaza,GreaterNoidatobriefthetrade about commencement of Doublestack Container Trains from ICD Dadri to Mundra Port on Western DedicatedFreightCorridor(WDFC).

The meet was attended by representatives of various renowned trade partners, comprising Shipping Lines, Exporters, Importers, Freight Forwarders and Joint Venture Companies-CFSs of ICD Dadri. The meet was chaired by Mr V. Kalyana Rama, IRTS, Chairman and Managing Director, CONCOR; while Mr Nanduri Srinivas, IRTS, Director (Operations & Business Development), DFCCIL (Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd.), Mr Sanjay Swarup, IRTS, Director (Operations and International Marketing), CONCOR, Mr Kamal Jain, IRTS, Executive Director, Area-1,CONCOR,MrVijoyKSingh, IRTS, Chief General Manager (ClusterHead),CONCOR and others participated, and interacted with the trade representatives. UnderWDFCnetwork,thetrainsfrom ICD/DadritoMundraPortcoveredthe distance of 1158 Kms. well within 30 Hrs., while the earlier average timing remained around 70 Hrs. And, it is expected further reduction in transit time. Very soon, Long-haul and

Double-stack trains will also move from ICD, Dadri to Pipavav and JNPA Ports besides Mundra port. A Doublestack train carries 180 TEUs, while a normal train carries only 90 TEUs of containers.Inlong-haul,twotrainsare coupledtogethertoformalongtrainto carrymorecontainersinonego.

RunningofDouble-stackandlonghaul trains from CONCOR ICD, Dadri, heralds a new beginning; and, itwillbeagamechangerfortheTrade of this area as it will bring down transit time drastically in addition to decrease logistics costs at many areas. The existing road transportation traffic will also be diverted to ICD Dadri to avail the benefitsthroughWDFC.

Trade can now easily estimate theirvesselplanstoaddvaluetotheir business as the trains will move directlytothedestinationportsunder WDFCnetwork.

CONCOR ICD Dadri is, therefore, all set to become the hub of trade for international business with the active supportofstakeholders.

Nitin Gadkari lays down roadmap to lower logistics cost

NEW DELHI: Speaking at an Event recently, Union Minister of Road, Transport, and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, stressed the need to reduce the logistics cost in a bid to emerge stronger and more competitiveintheglobalmarket.

In his key address, he asserted, “Logistics cost in India is pegged at 14 to 16 percent. In America and

Europeancountries,thelogisticscost isseenat12percent,andinChina,it’s 8 to 10 percent.” He also highlighted the measures through which the logistic cost can be reduced, benefiting the entire economic ecosystem.

While highlighting the measures and initiatives taken by the Governmenttoensuretheloweringof

logistic costs, he said, “If we want to be competitive in the global market, we need to focus on ways to reduce the logistic costs. We will have to makemoreandmoresuperiorquality roads. As of now, there are more than 30 highways in the making which will be soon inaugurated and made operational for the commuters,” said Gadkari.

APSEZ Custom receipts top Rs 80,000 cr

AHMEDABAD:

Handling about a quarter of India’s port cargo and generating customs receipts worth over Rs. 80,000 crore for the Government, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has a lot riding on it and are compelling reasons for the long-term sustainability of the company as well asthegroup.

The port operator, which is also the flagship of the Adani Group, owns and operates 14 ports and terminals in India from Mundra on the West Coast, VizinjamandKaraikalontheSouthern CoaststoKrishnapatnamandDhamra on the East, the company has virtually capturedalmosttheentirecoastlineof India.Thepaceofitsexpansioncanbe seen from the fact that in 2017 the company had just eight ports and terminals. A significant portion of the additionssincethenhascomethrough acquisitions.

An important metric of how much it is contributing to the exchequer is the customs receipts from cargo routed through its ports and inland container depots. Customs receipts were at Rs. 41,110 crore in FY21, grew to Rs. 60,945 crore in FY22, and then Rs.80,732croreintheyearjustended.

The rail freight that it pays to the Indian Railways for cargo through its port is also substantial, more than doubling over the last two years to Rs.14,034croreinFY23.

The revenue share, waterfront royalty that it pays to respective maritime boards and port authorities was at Rs. 906 crore in FY23, around 1.5timeswhatitpaidinFY21.

Cargohandling

In FY23, the company handled 339 milliontonnesofcargo,up8.6percent year-on-year and up 37 per cent from what it had handled in FY21. With its recent acquisition of Karaikal Port through the NCLT route, the company is adding 22 million tonnes

ofcargohandlingcapacitytotakeitto 580milliontonnes.

According to data its traffic growth, measured in the quantity of cargo handled, has been rising annually at 25 per cent since it came into existence in 2001, while total port cargo in India has been growing at 7 per cent, in the same period. In the last five years the growth of both has slowed – while Adani Ports traffic volumeroseanannual13percentthe all-India port growth was just 3percent.

Adani Ports has nearly half the market share of the cargo handled by non-major ports. Ports managed by the central government are classified asmajorports.

Industrial & Logistics sector leasing grew by 26% YoY in January-March : CBRE

NEW DELHI: Industrial & Logistics (I&L) sector leasing grew 26% year-on-year (YoY) to 8 million square feet (msf) in January-March 2023, while supply rose 28% YoY to 7.6 mn sq ft, according to a report by CBRE.

“During the January-March 2023 period, Delhi-NCR drove absorption activity,withtheleasingof1.7mnsqft, followed by Hyderabad at 1.5 mn sqft and Ahmedabad at 1.2 million sqft. Theleasingshareofthesethreecities in total leasing stood at 54 per cent. The collective share of Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad in supply addition stood at 59 per cent in January-March2023,”saidthereport, titled‘IndiaMarketMonitorQ12023'.

It added that 3PL (third-party logistics) had a majority share in leasing at 43 per cent, while e-commerce firms’ share improved

and stood at 15 per cent during the January-March 2023 period. Retail and engineering & manufacturing firms accounted for a share of 11 per cent each in leasing, followed by auto and ancillary corporates at 8 per cent. Overall, domestic firms had a 61 per cent share in leasing, while American corporations held a shareofabout17percent.

Anshuman Magazine, Chairman & CEO (India, South-East Asia, Middle East & Africa) of CBRE, said, “We anticipate that leasing momentum in the I&L space in 2023 will continue to be strong, with a demand of 32-35 mn sqft and would grow 1-5 per cent on an annual basis. Despite macroeconomic uncertainties, the I&L sector saw robust growth in the first quarter of 2023.”

He expects supply to grow by

15-24 per cent Y-o-Y to reach 24-26millionsquarefeet,followingthe release of pent-up supply. “We also foresee increased demand from FMCG, retail, and electronics & electricals sectors, while 3PL and engineering & manufacturing firms wouldcontinuetobekeydriversofthe leasingmomentumthisyear.”

Ram Chandnani, Managing Director (advisory & transactions services) of CBRE India, said, “We anticipate that rising occupier demand for improved warehousing spaces and storage efficiency would translate into a growing need for superior warehousing facilities. Moreover, occupiers’ desire to achieve operational efficiency and reduce costs in a multi-user facility is projected to boost demand for large-sized spaces (more than 1 lakh squarefeet).”

Mauritius offers Dedicated SEZ For Indian Companies

MUMBAI: Mauritius has invited Indian companies to develop a dedicated special economic zone for themselves, said Arvind Radhakrishna, Strategic Advisor to the Economic Development Board of Mauritius.

He is leading a delegation of 21 companies to explore new areas of economic collaboration, technology exchange and joint ventures.

“Mauritius has signed investment protection agreement with 44 countries and double taxation avoidance agreement with 21 African countries. It has preferential market access to 70 per cent of the world consumer market as it has signed trade agreements with Africa, USA, European Union, China, UK, Turkey andothercountries,”hestated.

Sharing a trading overview between the two countries,

Seewraj Nundlall, Counsellor (Investment & Trade), Consulate General of the Republic of Mauritius said that India is the second largest source of import, accounting for 10 per centofthetotalimportofMauritius.

“Mauritius’ total exports to India grew from USD 16 million in 2010 to USD 56 million by 2022. Around 90 per cent of the over USD 70 billion Indian investment in Africa is routed throughMauritius,”saidNundlall.

India, European free trade agreement nations discuss resumption of talks

NEW DELHI: India and the fournation bloc EFTA recently discussed waystoresumenegotiationsforafree trade agreement with a view to strengthening economic ties between thetworegions.

The subject came up for discussion during a meeting of highlevel representatives from India and theEuropeanFreeTradeAssociation (EFTA) states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland)here.

Both sides “discuss the prospects of resuming their negotiations towards a Trade and Economic

Partnership Agreement (TEPA),” the Commerce Ministry said in a statement.

Free trade agreements between the two regions are officially dubbed TEPA. Under such pacts, two trading partners significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them, besides easing norms to promote trade in services and investments.

The high-level delegations were composed of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal; Jan Christian Vestre, Minister of Trade and

Industry of Norway; Helene Budliger Artieda, Swiss State Secretary at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO; Martin Eyjolfsson, Permanent Secretary of State of Iceland at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs; Kurt Jager, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to EFTA, WTO and the UN in Geneva; and Henri Getaz, Secretary-GeneraloftheEFTA.

“The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on the state of play of theirnegotiationsandexplorewaysto advancethetalks,”itsaid.

Indo-Korea bilateral trade grows 17% to record $27.8 billon in 2022

NEW DELHI: The bilateral trade betweenIndiaandKoreagrewby17.3 per cent to $27.8 billion in 2022, accordingtoKoreaTrade-Investment PromotionAgency(KOTRA).

In 2021, the value of bilateral trade between the two countries stood at $23.7billion.

Korea’sexportstoIndiaincreased by 21 per cent to $18.9 billion, while imports increased by 10.5 per cent to $8.9billion.

Addressing India-Korea Future Industry Partnership Event 2023, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to India Chang Jae-bok, said, “India and Korea must focus on the critical

issue of green energy and learn from eachother’sstrengths.Greenenergy, hydrogen energy, and EVs are the future, and Korea’s leadership in producing EVs since 2005 is an excellentexampleforIndia.”

The two-day event is organised as part of a 50-year celebration of the India-Koreadiplomaticrelationship.

Executive Vice President for Economic Cooperation & Trade Affairs, KOTRA, Taeho Kim said both countries must prioritise cleaner energy and focus on SDGs, which are the need of the hour. Both countries will continue to work towards achievingthesegoals.

COCHIN: The Vizhinjam International Seaport will not be just a cargo handling center, but the area including Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram will become a major commercial and industrial area oncetheportprojectbecomesareality, saysFinanceMinisterK.N.Balagopal.

He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘entry and exit gate complex’ at Vizhinjam International Seaportrecently.

The State government’s proposal to construct an outer ring road from Vizinjam to Navaikulam was taken keepingthisinmind,saidtheMinister. Once the Vizhinjam project would

becomeareality,80%ofthecargoships meantfordifferentpartsofthecountry would depart from the area. With this, one can simply imagine the endless possibilities that the Vizhinjam port would bring when the port would handle around 80% of India’s domestic cargotraffic,saidMr.Balagopal.

More business would come to Vizianjam than to Sri Lanka, Singapore,andDubaiPorts.Withthis, the current space and area would not be enough for industrial growth.

The Rs. 1,000-crore ring road project had been envisaged keeping in view the development of the area with the commissioning of the port. As the

industrial centers and logistics centers would come up on both sides of the ring road, the project aimed to enable industrial development of the entire project area by acquiring more land with the participation of the privatesectorandthepublic.

The Minor Ports in Kerala would also become commercial hubs along the coast of Kerala once the port was commissioned, said Port Minister Ahammad Devarkovil, who presided over the function. The ‘In and Out Gate Complex’ set up at the project site would facilitate the processing of container traffic at the container terminalandbackupyard.

UltraTech pioneers Coastal Shipping to transport Phosphogypsum

NEW DELHI: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, inland and coastal waterways have been leveraged by UltraTech Cement Limited, the cement flagship company of Aditya Birla Group (ABG), to transport Phosphogypsumconsignment.

The consignment of 57,000 metric

tons (MT) of phosphogypsum was transported in a bulk cargo carrier from Paradeep port in Odisha and reached the jetty of UltraTech Cement’s integrated cement unit, Gujarat Cement Works (GCW) located in Kovaya of Amreli district in GujaratonApril26,2023.

UltraTech, India’s largest cement and ready-mix concrete (RMC) company, has institutionalised ABG’s sustainability framework in its endeavourtodrivesustainabilityacross the value chain of its operations.

This is a very significant move by the LSC being FFFAI the umbrella organisation of 30 Customs Brokers/Freight Forwarders associations across India representing more than 6500 members. This is also very significant considering the fact that FFFAI through its training arm Indian Institute of Freight Forwarders (IIFF) is skilling logistics professionals and freshers aspiring to enter into this highly potential sector in terms of career opportunities.

Logistics Sector Skill Council, (LSC) is a non- profit organization set up by Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) / National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) with the aim to ensure skill trained Human Resource at entry level and up-skill the logistics workforce. LSC works with stakeholders, including industry players, government agencies, training providers, and academic institutions, to identify the skill gaps in the logistics sector and design training programs toaddressthosegaps.

LSC is encompassing institutional mechanisms for ensuring that the share of skilled trained manpower in the Logistics sector is increased rapidly. Setting up of Centres of Excellence, introduction of Apprenticeships in logistics and revamping the Course curricula in academia will propel the pace of skill development in the sector. LSC is gearing up all its logistics sub-sectors to spread awareness in such a way as to make it an aspirational sector,forbothmenandwomen.

It is expected Mr. Shankar Shinde’s appointment in the Board of Governing Council would further strengthen LSC’s reach to the ground level of end-to-end logistics industry segment PAN India Commenting on

his appointment and importance of LSC for the Indian logistics industry to facilitate the export import trade Mr Shinde said, “ FFFAI is a larger platform covering every aspect of Logistics. This is a good opportunity to understand and build the GAP between Academician and Practitioners to conceptualise curriculum to create the talent pool as per industry requirements The LSC team experts will enhance the education system to professionalise the Logistics sector for the next generation to adopt career in Logistics as first choice rather than optional.”

The Members of the Governing Council are representatives of the 12 Sub Sectors that LSC represents namely: Warehousing (including tertiary packaging), Land Transportation (including Commercial Vehicle Drivers for Cargo), Cold Chain Solutions, Courier and Express Industry, E-Commerce, Port Terminals, Inland Container Depots, and Container Freight, Air Cargo Handling (other than Tarmac side operations), Freight Forwarding and Customs, Marine Services, Shipping and Inland Waterways, Supply Chain Solutions, Liquid LogisticsandRailLogistics.
