NEW DELHI : The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), the apex body for exporters, is crafting a strategy to boost exports to the United States in five key sectors. This comes in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s stated intention to impose steep tariffs on Chinese goods.
“We need to be proactive rather than reactive this time. Our focus is on developing a strategy for five sectors: electronics, toys, apparel, organic and inorganic chemicals, and leather,” FIEO Vice-President Israr Ahmed said recently
Ahmed’s remarks come as Trump has pledged to raise tariffs by 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, and by 10% on Chinese imports, starting in January. So far, India has remained unaffected by the initial tariff hikes.
The apex exporters’ body, FIEO, has emphasized the need for government support, particularly in the form of financial assistance to enable Indian exporters to participate in trade exhibitions across the United States.
F
well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities arising from shifting global trade dynamics. To bolster this effort, exporters have urged the government to increase funding under the Market Access Initiative (MAI) scheme, enabling a more aggressive promotion of Indian goods in the US market. “MAI funding needs to be US-specific. In today’s geopolitical situation, this is a great opportunity for us There should be a three-year plan,” Ahmed said.
The US is India’s largest trade partner and export destination. During the financial year 2023-24, the size of the bilateral merchandise trade between the two nations stood at nearly $120 billion. The trade balance has been in favour of India, with a surplus of $35.3 billion.
Ahmed also said there were some challenges for exporters, in terms of ‘liquidity’. Besides, export finance has come down. The apex body for exporters has urged the Centre to relax the requirement of making payments to micro, small, and medium enterprises within 45 days of buying goods and services, besides a five-year extension of the interest equalisation scheme.
NEW DELHI: India’s exports rose from $466 billion in 2013–14 to $778 billion in 2023–24, a 67% growth in just ten years. India is now firmly at the forefront of international trade because of its increased global export share, sector-specific efforts, and quality assurance.
Over the past ten years, India’s export industry has grown remarkably, demonstrating the rising demand for Indian goods worldwide. In a recent statement to Parliament, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal stated that India’s total exports increased by 67%, from $466 billion in 2013–14 to roughly $778 billion in 2023–24 Additionally, the nation’s percentage of worldwide item exports increased from1 66%to1 81%,movingitupfrom20thto17thplaceglobally
In order to sustain and accelerate export growth, the Indian government has implemented a number of programs and initiatives. Unveiled in April, the Foreign Trade Policy 2023 offers a clear road map for increasing exports and streamlining trade procedures Additionally, to lessen the financial strain on exporters, the Interest Equalization Scheme on rupee export credithasbeenextendedtillDecember2024
Initiatives that are sector-specific have also been quite important. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, or APEDA, promotes international trade, builds infrastructure, and provides financial aid to agricultural exporters. Similarly, MPEDA is
concentrating on enhancing aquaculture productivity and expanding exports of value-added marine products.
India’s export strategy still places a strong emphasis on quality assurance. In order to maintain the quality of Indian products and keep low-quality imports out of the nation, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) enforces strict Quality Control Orders (QCOs). Additional programs that help laborintensive industries compete more effectively in international markets include the Rebate of State and Central Levies and Taxes (RoSCTL) and the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP).
The Government has introduced creative programs to encourage exports at the local level. The Districts as Export Hubs program determines a region’s potential for exports, and digital tools streamline the accreditation procedure for commerce. This project would enhance India’s reputation as one of the world’s top exporters and contribute to the creation of jobs locally
In fact, the durability of India’s industry and the effectiveness of its policies are the main reasons for the country’s strong export growth In terms of boosting economic growth and job opportunities, India is well-positioned to further solidify her position as a global export giant with sustained government assistance, sectoral development, and quality concerns

NEW DELHI : India is finalizing
i t s t r a d e s t r a t e g y w i t h t h e United States as Donald Trump prepares to reassume the presidency. The government is actively engaging with industry stakeholders to define export priorities, known as “offensive asks,” while keeping all avenues open, including a potential mini-trade deal and measures to address anticipated trade retaliation from the Trump administration.
“ We h a v e s o u g h t i n d u s t r y feedback on trade relations with the US and the potential impact of Trump’s policies. Their insights will guide us in evaluating key issues and identifying offensive interests,” an official stated. Offensive asks, which focus on securing greater market access for Indian exports in the US, are central to India’s negotiation approach.
The renewed focus comes in response to Trump’s threats of imposing reciprocal taxes on Indian exports, a move viewed as retaliation for what he considers high tariffs on certain US goods. The Commerce and Industry Ministry is revisiting the framework of the mini-trade deal negotiated during Trump’s previous presidency while preparing to address any unfavorable measures.
“ N e g o t i a t i o n s , d i s c u s s i o n s , retaliation, disputes, or the minitrade deal—everything remains open for consideration,” the official remarked.
The US remains India’s secondlargest trading partner, with exports from India to the US totaling $53 billion and imports reaching $30 billion between April and
at a compound annual rate of 10 48 percent between 2001 and 2023, significantly outpacing the overall import growth rate of 4.76 percent. India’s strategy, including the viability of a mini-trade deal and its response to Trump’s potential retaliatory measures, will be finalized as his administration unveils key policy decisions.
D o n a l d Tr u m p ’ s r e t u r n a s President of the United States is anticipated to revive his hallmark protectionist trade policies These include imposing tariffs, targeting trade imbalances, and promoting domestic manufacturing. During his previous tenure, Trump’s trade agenda frequently emphasized reciprocal taxes and aggressive stances against trading partners, sparking fears of trade wars and global economic disruptions.
MUMBAI: Annual leasing volume in the logistics and industrial real estate space in India is likely to exceed 50 million square feet (MSF) for the third year in a row, and this strong momentum is likely to prevail in the coming year too, according to a report As of October, the leasing volume had already surpassed 41 MSF across the top eight real estate markets, according to a Cushman & Wakefield report.
Ever since the production-linked i n c e n t i v e ( P L I ) s c h e m e w a s introduced by the government in 2020, the industrial leasing volume witnessed healthy growth. Besides, the strong emergence of retail and e-commerce has led to intense activity in the warehousing space too.
“
new-normal level of demand to sustain given the widening of the consumption base in India alongside robust industrial activity witnessed in
+ 1 diversification strategy followed by global manufacturing firms,” the report mentioned.
Surge in the engineering and manufacturing sector growth, strengthening third-party logistics (3PL) operators and retail industry are primary drivers of demand for the logistics and industrial space in recent years, and these factors will continue to remain key drivers for 2025 as well.
Cities such as Pune, Chennai and
Bengaluru have seen healthy leasing volumes in recent years, while other cities exhibit a positive outlook, said the report.
“We anticipate the demand for logistics and industrial spaces to remain robust in 2025, supported by India’s expanding retail consumption base and continued manufacturing growth,” said Abhishek Bhutani, Managing Director, Logistics and I n d
, Cushman & Wakeeld.
Additionally, “we anticipate 25 million square feet of Grade-A warehousing supply to hit the market over the next 2-3 years, concentrated in West and South India with major projects in Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Bengaluru,” he mentioned.
PARADIP: Orissa govt is planning to expand its maritime infrastructure by constructing two additional seaports, complementing the three existing ports at Paradip, Dhamra and Gopalpur.
Industries Secretary Hemant Sharma said Chief Minister Mohan Majhi approved the development of new ports at Inchuri in Balasore district in Northern Odisha and Bahuda in Ganjam district in the southern part of the state, with potential investors evincing interest.
State govt is planning to sign an agreement with PSA Singapore, a leading port group with a global

NEW DELHI: The Indian rupee (INR) is expected to face challenges in 2025 due to multiple global and domestic factors, according to a report by Standard Chartered Bank.
The report noted that the key pressures include slowing foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, w e a k m a n u f a c t u r i n g e x p o r t s , and a narrowing policy rate differential with the United States
It said "slowing FDI flows, weak manufacturing export growth amid slowing global demand and narrowing policy rate differential with the US are likely to pressurize the INR".
The report projects the rupee to trade with a modest depreciating trend, reaching 85.5 per US dollar over the next 12 months.
While certain factors like India's improving economic growth, attractive real yields, stable balance of payments due to its inclusion in the global bond index, softer commodity prices, and strong foreign exchange reserves held by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are supportive of the currency, they may not be enough to offset other pressures.
Itsaid"WeexpecttheINRtotradewith a modest depreciating bias to 85 5/USD overa12-monthtimehorizon"
On the bright side, the report highlighted several positive drivers for Indian equities. It noted that India's GDP growth and corporate earnings are likely to outpace those of major global peers.
Additionally, steady domestic investor inflows through systematic
investment
resumption of foreign investments-spurred by superior macroeconomic fundamentals, expected US Federal Reserve rate cuts, and relatively low foreign investor positioning--are expected to provide strong support for Indian stocks.
T h e r e p o r t a
a recovery in India's economic growth from its current cyclical slowdown, underpinned by factors such as higher government capital expenditure, a recovery in rural demand, improved urban consumption, and broader policy support.
It said "We expect India's economic growth to recover from a cyclical slowdown and stay ahead of its major peers in 2025".
MUMBAI: India’s economy is likely to grow by 6.5 per cent in the current and the next financial year, a report said, attributing lower than anticipated expansion in the September quarter to fall in private consumption expenditure and gross fixed capital formation.
Real GDP growth eased to a seven-quarter low of 5 4 per cent in July-September — the second quarter of the current 2024-25 fiscal year
This was compared to 6.7 per cent in the preceding quarter.
This was primarily because two domestic demand components — private final consumption expenditure and gross fixed capital formation — together accounted for a fall of 1.5 percentage points.
“One outstanding feature of demand is the slowdown in investment,
as reflected in the growth of gross fixed capital formation This growth is estimated at 5.4 per cent in 2QFY25, which is a six-quarter low. Apart from the fact that private investment demand has not picked up, there was a contraction in government of India’s investment expenditure growth , which has remained negative at (-)15.4 per cent in first half of FY25,” the report said. It continued to be negative even in October 2024 at (-)8.4 per cent, implying that in the first seven months government’s investment expenditure growth has remained negative at (-)14.7 per cent. “In fact, to meet the budgeted target of Government of India’s capital expenditure growth of 17.1 per cent over CGA actuals for FY24, we now require a growth of 60.5 per cent in the remaining
five months of the fiscal year FY25.” The economy watch December 2024 forecasts India’s real GDP growth at 6.5 per cent for FY25 (April 2024 to March 2024 fiscal year) and FY26.
“With global conditions remaining uncertain and global trade likely to be fragmented, India may have to continue to rely largely on domestic demand and services exports. In the medium-term, India’s real GDP growth prospects can be kept at 6.5 per cent per year provided the Gover nment of India (GoI) accelerates its capital expenditure growth in the remaining part of the current fiscal year and comes up with a medium-term investment pipeline with participation from the GoI and State governments and both their respective public sector entities, and the private corporate sector,” it said.

DHAKA: An advanced scanner, capable of detecting any hidden metal objects, was installed at the cargo vehicle terminal of Benapole Port in Jashore recently.
The scanner is expected to become fully operational in early January following a series of trial runs, officials said.
Faisal Ahsan Sojib, Assistant Director of Benapole Land Port, said, “The installation of the scanner will bring transparency and accountability to trade and will contribute to the swift import of goods. We expect it to be operational in January.”
Its installation at the truck entry gate in the zero line is
nearing completion. Once operational, it is expected that the scanner will help reduce harassment for traders and significantly enhance trade security. Benapole and Petrapole ports handle the most trade between Bangladesh and India via land routes. The interim government has purchased sixscanners, funded by the National Board of Revenue , with one now installed at Benapole Port to check smuggling. Shamsur Rahman, President of the Benapole C&F Agents Association, said that the scanner is being introduced in response to traders’ demands, which will enhance trade security
