Soberingly, we are at a pivotal halfway mark to a key SDG date – 2030 – when the SDGs need to be achieved However, according to the SDG Stocktake report published by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and Accenture, the world is facingastarkreality:85%ofallSDGindicatorsareofftrack,and none of the SDGs are on track to be achieved by 2030.

DP World Chennai hosts inaugural call for Far East India Express (FIX1) service

FIX1 service will commence the first direct connect between Chennai and East Asia/China

The FIX1 service is a collaborative endeavor involving four consortium partners, with Sinotrans deploying two vessels and TS Line, Sealead, and SITC each contributing one vessel to the fleet.

FIX1 is the first-ever service to establish a direct shipping connection between Chennai and China, reducing transit time by 8 d a y s , b y b y p a s s i n g t r a d i t i o n a l transshipment ports. The service's rotation is strategically designed to optimise the supply chain efficiencies, covering Ports Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, and Shekou ports in China, the Chennai and Vizag ports in India, and Port Kelang in Malaysia (East Bound) Providing direct, swift, and seamless connectivity, the service will provide greater logistical reliability to traders across the East Asia corridor. The service will be further complimented by DP World's best-in-class logistics solutions and greater supply chain efficiency to boost trade in the region.

Commemorating the occasion, DP World Chennai berthed the Renjian 27 vessel carrying a load of 3814 TEUs (2350 Moves) on 11th September 2023 The company also hosted a small felicitation ceremony at DP World Chennai premises, honouring the vessel and its Captain, Zhang Qin in the presence of Shiva Mahadevan, Managing Director of Sea Lead India, along with representatives from C Line, TS Lines, Sinotrans Agent (Abrao Group), and SITC Agent (JM Baxi Group).

Arabian Gulf. As trade volumes along the route grow, there will be a higher d e m a n d f o r l o g i s t i c s a n d transportation services, including trucking, warehousing, and port operations.

N E W D E L H I : S t e p s l i k e streamlining port and customs operations, and setting up of national trade network will help Indian firms integrate with global value chains and add $1.2 trillion in the country's foreign trade by 2030, according to a report.

T h e G l o b a l Tr a d e R e s e a r c h Initiative (GTRI) said that currently, India's limited participation in global value chains (GVCs) hampers its export p o t e n t i a l , d e s p i t e p o s s e s s i n g substantial manufacturing capabilities across various GVC-relevant product categories.

The integration of Indian companies in the GVCs is fundamental as about 70 per cent of global trade operates within these chains, encompassing a w i d e r a n g e o f p r o d u c t s , f r o m e l e c t r o n i c s a n d m a c h i n e r y t o pharmaceuticals and apparel.

"India's weak GVC integration can b e a t t r i b u t e d t o p o o r t r a d e infrastructure, causing delays at ports and customs, which are detrimental to the timely flow of goods in these i n t r i c a t e v a l u e c h a i n s , " G T R I Co-Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

Countries like China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia have excelled in GVCs due to investments in quality trade infrastructure.

The GTRI report has recommended six action points to the government which can help boost the participation of domestic firms in GVCs.

The suggestions include automating port and customs procedures, and

implementation of green channel clearances for 99 per cent of shipments; analysing the top 10,000 exporters responsible for 85 per cent of India's exports; matching global best practices for ship turnaround times, reducing queues, speeding up transactions, and optimizing infrastructure use; and enhance communication between traders and shipping companies, port operators, and Container Freight Stations (CFS).

The report asked for creation of an online platform for all export-import compliance processes.

"National Trade Network (NTN) would enable exporters to submit all required information and documents in one place, eliminating the need to interact separately with customs, DGFT (directorate general of foreign trade), shipping companies, ports, and banks," Srivastava said.

The other steps include focus on high-value segments of GVCs, product conceptualization, design, prototype development, and after-sales services.

Countries like the US, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea excel in R&D expertise at the high end, while China specializes in final assembly at the lower end.

Further, it suggested inviting top global fir ms to become anchor manufacturers in priority sectors.

"We know their names. Apple and Micron are a good beginning With thousands of manufacturing units in most sectors, India needs a few large

anchor firms in each sector Their use of innovation and technology will result in gains for all firms in the entire sector the way Suzuki did to India's automobile sector in the early 1980s," he said.

Citing renowned examples of GVCs, the report said that for Apple's iPhone, R&D and critical component design happens in the US; Taiwan produces semiconductor chips; South Korea m a k e s O L E D d i s p l a y s a n d semiconductor components; Japan m a n u f a c t u r e s m e m o r y c h i p s , capacitors, and sensors; Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand produce specific components or assemblies.

Similarly, for laptops, Taiwan p r o d u c e s p r o c e s s o r s a n d semiconductors; South Korea makes displays, memory chips, and storage devices; and Japan manufactures b a t t e r i e s , s e n s o r s , a n d s o m e semiconductor components.

Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines provide labour and assembly services, along with making components for specific brands; and Vietnam handles assembly operations for a few brands. In China, 90 per cent of laptops are ultimately assembled, with m a j o r m a n u f a c t u r e r s h a v i n g manufacturing facilities there.

Kolkata Port signs pact with Bangladeshi firm to promote Multimodal transport route to Northeast India

K O L K ATA : S y a m a P r a s a d Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, has signed a pact with Saif Powertec Ltd (SPL), Bangladesh, to promote a new m u l t i m o d a l t r a n s p o r t r o u t e connecting the riverine port with northeast India via Chattogram, Mongla Ports and Pangaon Inland Container Terminal.

SPL, which has entered into a partnership with the Kolkata port, has decided to introduce two dedicated vessels for containerised cargo using the Indo-Bangladeshi Protocol route

“A s t e a d y l i n e r s e r v i c e o f containerised vessels on riverine and sea routes, duly equipped with efficient handling facilities at the

ports, will encourage the traders of both India and Bangladesh to avail the waterways to transport goods on a regular basis,” said port chairman Rathendra Raman.

The initiative will not only alleviate the time and cost of transporting cargo from mainland India to

northeastern states, but also furnish an alternative route avoiding the congested Siliguri and Guwahati corridors, he said.

“The distance between Kolkata and Agartala is approximately 1,619 km via Siliguri However, via Chattogram port, the distance is around 575km. By road it takes 6-7 days to cover the distance via Siliguri, but via Chattagram port, it will take only 4-5 days from Kolkata port,” officials said.

The new multimodal transport route will be a boon for trade and commerce between India and Bangladesh, and will also boost the economic development of northeast India, Raman said.

VOC Port becomes rst Indian Port to handle green ammonia import

Port, located in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district, has become the first port in India to handle green ammonia with the a r r i v a l o f t h r e e 2 0 - i n c h t a n k containers loaded with the fuel from the Port of Damietta in Egypt for Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd.

The shipment highlights VOC Port’s proactive efforts to embrace environmentally friendly alternatives i n t h e f i e l d o f e n e r g y a n d transportation,VOCPortofficialssaid.

VOC Port is one of the 12 ports owned by the Union government.

Green Ammonia, referred to as the ‘fuel of the future’, has gained prominence as a cleaner and greener alternative to traditional fossil fuels. It is produced through a process that utilizes renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, to

generate hydrogen, which is then combined with nitrogen to create ammonia. This process significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional ammonia production methods.

Green Ammonia is a versatile fuel t h a t c a n b e u s e d i n v a r i o u s applications, including as a clean energy source for ships, power generation, and even as a fertilizer. Its potential to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change has made it a focal point for g o v e r n m e n t s a n d i n d u s t r i e s worldwide.

The import of green ammonia at VOC Port marks a crucial step towards reducing the carbon footprint of shipping and transportation in the region. It aligns with the global shift towards sustainable energy sources and supports India’s pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of its climate action goals.

VOC Port has recently flagged off plans to develop a complete green hydrogen ecosystem for industries and become India’s export and bunkering hub for green hydrogen.

NTPC, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port tie-up for green hydrogen hub

NEW DELHI: NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), an arm of India’s leading integrated power producer NTPC Ltd, and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (also known as Kolkata port), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, have s i g n e d a m e m o r a n d u m o f understanding for the development of a green hydrogen hub at the Kolkata Port.

The latest agreement follows NTPC’s tie-up with V.O Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) earlier this month for the development of a green hydrogen hub at VOCPA, Tuticorin, in Tamil Nadu.

Maritime transport and ports have significant potential for decarbonization through the use of green hydrogen or its derivatives such as green ammonia and green methanol as fuel for propulsion and other operations.

Under the mission, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Water ways (MoPSW) is set to play a crucial role i n e s t a b l i s h i n g I n d i a ’ s e x p o r t capabilities for green hydrogen and its derivates. It will facilitate the d e v e l o p m e n t o f t h e r e q u i r e d infrastructure including storage

bunkers, port operations equipment, and refueling facilities MoPSW will a l s o d r i v e t h e a d o p t i o n o f h y d r o g e n / d e r i v a t i v e s (ammonia/methanol) as propulsion fuel for ships The Ministry will also work towards making India a green hydrogen/derivative refueling hub.

NTPC is India’s largest power utility with a total installed capacity of 73+ GW Its wholly owned subsidiary, NGEL, is taking up renewable energy capacity addition including green hydrogen and energy storage projects. NTPC Group aims for 60 GW of RE capacity by the year 2032, with 3.2 GW already installed and over 20 GW in the pipeline.

Decarbonised supply chains a thing of the present – APM Terminals CEO Svendsen

T H E H A G U E : APM Terminals is already sourcing ~40% of all the electricity it consumes globally from renewable sources – a nearly four-fold increase from 11% in 2020.

Decarbonised ports, as well as ships are proof that the supply chain transformation is happening here and now, says APM Terminals’ CEO Keith Svendsen.

One of the company's three breakthrough objectives, decarbonisation will be achieved by 2040 through electrification, energy optimisation, and sourcing of 100% renewable electricity such as solar energy, he confirmed. First call

Svendsen was speaking at an event to mark the first call of the world's first methanol-powered container ship at APM Terminals’ Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam. Compared with conventionally powered container ships, Laura reduces emissions by 65%.

The arrival of the ‘Laura Maersk’ was “another good example of purpose in action” said Svendsen. The vessel is “a game changer” in the decarbonisation efforts of the shipping and port logistics industry, he said.

The 172-meter-long vessel was named last week by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a ceremony in Copenhagen, attended by Svendsen, and APM Terminals’ Head of Decarbonisation, Sahar Rashidbeigi.

Partners in energy transition

Applauding the speed at which the Laura Maersk was developed – at around seven years ahead of estimations made as recently as five years ago – Svendsen said the key to her fast delivery lay in partnership.

As such, he called on APM Terminals’ p a r t n e r s – t h e G o v e r n m e n t s , r e g u l a t o r s , customers, vendors, and suppliers – to “ a c t n o w – f a s t and together" to accelerate and scale decarbonisation and the energy transition to "reduce greenhouse gas emissions holistically in the transport chain.”

APM Terminals has committed to fully decarbonising its terminal operations by 2040, the advancement on its initial finishing line by 10 years.

Speaking on the quay alongside the Laura, he said the ship marks a crucial first step for the shipping sector and supply chains Capable of carrying 2,136 twenty-foot containers (TEU) the Laura is a relatively small –yet symbolic – ship, said Svendsen.

More than 100 vessels of all types with methanol engines are in global orderbooks, however Svendsen said: "We expect to see methanol fueled ships from Maersk and other shipping lines here in Rotterdam. The faster we create a big market for green fuels, the better and cheaper availability will be.

"We are in times in which we will create an ecosystem that will collectively reduce emissions from shipping and logistics much faster than we could have hoped," he said

Three Japanese Shipping Companies partner to establish Global Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain

TOKYO: On September 12 2023, Japan Suiso Energy, Ltd. (JSE), and three Japanese shipping companies, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K"LINE), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), have agreed to join JSE Ocean, Ltd. (JSE Ocean), a subsidiary of JSE. JSE remains the majority shareholder with 50.2% of stock, whilst the shipping companies hold 16.6% each.

Hydrogen in Japan

The expectation for hydrogen as a clean energy is increasing worldwide as we strive to achieve a decarbonized society Japan's Basic Hydrogen Strategy, revised by the Japanese government in June 2023, identifies hydrogen as the alternative to fossil fuels as it targets decarbonisation. In the Strategy Japan commits to a target of 3 million tons/year of hydrogen by 2030, 12 million tons/year by 2040, and 20 million tons/year by 2050.

The target hydrogen supply cost is approximately JPY30 /Nm3 in 2030 and JPY20 /Nm3 in 2050 at the point of arrival in Japan. To achieve these price and volume targets, and create a secure global supply chain, transport by ship is crucial.

Background

In August 2021, Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO),

allocated a grant from the Japanese government's Green Innovation Fund to JSE, Iwatani Corporation and ENEOS Corporation for the "Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain Commercialization Demonstration Project".

In this project, JSE will establish the world's first large-scale hydrogen liquefaction and transportation technology, involving an initial 30,000 tons of hydrogen per year before upscaling.
