India signs deal to adopt Moscow’s SPFS System for Banking Payments to Russia

The landmark agreement was signed between external affairs minister S. Jaishankar and visiting Russian deputy prime minister Denis Manturov on April 18 in New Delhi, said the newspaper. The deal also allows acceptance of Indian Ru-Pay cards and India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Russia, and the Russian MIR cards and its Fast Payments System (FPS)inIndia.

According to Bloomberg, about $2 billion in payments from India to Russiaisstuckoverthelastyear.

India and Russia had earlier agreed to settle payments through Special Rupee Vostro Accounts (SRVA) but that has been stalled because of fear of

western sanctions on Indian banks and the high imbalance in bilateral trade. Russia was keen to be paid in Yuans or Dirhams. While India is not keen to adopt the Chinese currency, the UAE has been wary of western sanctions in case India uses Dirhams to pay Russia for crude oil above the western mandatedpriceof$60perbarrel.

The latest agreement clarifies that Russia can use the surplus Indian rupees to conduct other businesses in India or remit them back to Russia, reports the newspaper. The remittance is unlikely because of the Russian reluctance, as has been the case with the Iranian central bank, to have a reserve of rupees. As per Bloomberg, Russia had turned down India’s offer

that the former use rupee proceeds from weapon sales to invest in Indian debt and capital markets to avoid stockpiling.

SPFS is a financial messaging system that works like the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), the international payment system used by banks to transfer funds worldwide. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US and the EU removed most Russian banksfromtheSWIFTnetwork.

Since then, Russia has been asking India to adopt the SPFS to make the payments.MoscowdevelopedtheSPFS after Russia was threatened with expulsion from SWIFT when it annexed Crimeain2014.

Chennai Port to be cruise tourism hub on East coast : Shipping Minister

NEW DELHI: The Centre has planned to make Chennai the hub for cruisetourismontheEastCoast,Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said here on Sunday. For the first time in the history of Chennai Port, a continuous cruise service was operated from JunetoSeptember2022,hesaid.

Sonowal was here to review the performance of the Chennai Port Trust and its subsidiary Kamarajar Port Ltd

along with senior officials including the Chairperson of the Ports, Sunil Paliwal. “We are going to make Chennai Port a hub of cruise tourism in the East Coast.” Sonowal told reporters. Chennai Port and Cordelia Cruises signed a memorandum of understanding in May 2022 to boost cruise tourism, he recalled. Sonowal said 87,000 passengers from 37 cruise tourism operators visited Chennai Port in the past few years. Later, responding to a

query, Paliwal said Container Ferry Services between Chennai and Puducherry had commenced in a small waywithcontainersbeingthemaincargo.

On launching passenger ferry services between Chennai Port and Puducherry, he said, “This will be a tourist ferry as travelling from Chennai to Puducherry is much faster by road. But a tourist ferry between the two citieswillbemoreofapleasure.Already wearetalkingtoafewcompanies.

Piyush Goyal says ONDC poised for rapid growth in months ahead, invites all e-commerce companies to join

NEW DELHI : Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles,ShriPiyushGoyalsaidthatthe Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) of tomorrow will be a transformational engine across the world and not only in India during his address at “Enabling Bharat 2.0”, a one-day workshop conducted by

ONDC in New Delhi. The Minister said that he is optimistic about a significant growthofONDCinthenextfewmonths. He invited all e-commerce companies, big and small, to join ONDC and be part of this new bazaar that reimagines digitalcommerce.

He mentioned that ONDC will promote local languages, products, and cultural heritage, and create

opportunities for small businesses. He said that small artisans and workers can offer better quality through ONDC and also earn better without having to pay commission for their products. He emphasized that ONDC will foster healthy competition, benefit consumers and contribute to the overall growth of the digital commerce ecosystem in India.

APSEZ has sufficient cash to repay $130 million worth of senior notes

AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone(APSEZ) hascommencedanofferto buy up to $130 million of 3.375 per cent senior notes outstanding that are due in 2024, as part of the company’s plans to prepay part of its near-termdebtmaturities.

The purchase programme will be fundedbyitscashreserves,itsaid.

After the completion of this tender offer, the company expects $520 million

worth of notes to remain outstanding. Post the offer, the company intends to offer to purchase around $130 million of theoutstandingnotesineachofthenext fourquarters.

The company may choose to either accelerate or defer this plan subject to itsownliquiditypositionandthemarket conditions, and further subject to the terms,includingthepricing,itsaid.

Adani Ports has repayment obligations worth Rs. 2,239 crore in FY24, over Rs. 14,500 crore in the years

FY25 to FY28, Rs. 6,204 crore in FY30 and then again over Rs. 8,000 crore in theyearsFY31toFY35.

The company said the tender offer for purchase of the notes will expire at 5 pm, New York time, on May 22, 2023. The consideration for each $1,000 principal amount of notes purchased will be $970 in respect of notes tendered by5pmonMay8,2023,or$955per$1,000 principal amount for notes tendered after the early tender date but at or beforetheexpirationtime.

Bangladesh gives access to India for transporting goods via Seaports

CHATTOGRAM: Bangladesh has given access to India to transport goods to its own territory including the northeastern states via Chattogram andMonglaseaports.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a permanent transit order in this regard on Tuesday. “India will have to follow customs procedures for transit and transshipment goods as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) signed between Bangladesh and IndiaundertheAgreementontheuseof Chattogram and Mongla Ports for Movement of Goods to and from India,” statestheNBRorder.

As per the transit orders, Indian goods can be transported through four entry points with 16 transit routes — Chattogram and Akhaura in Bangladesh and Agartala in India; Mongla and Akhaura in Bangladesh to Agartala in India; Tamabil in Sylhet and Dauki in India’s Meghalaya; Sheola in

Sylhet and Sutarkandi in Assam; and and Bibirbazar in Cumilla and SrimantapurinTripura.

As per the deal, traders of India will have to pay transhipment fee of Tk 30 per tonne, security charge of Tk 100 per tonne, document-processing fee of Tk 30 (per chalan), escort charge of Tk50 (per tonne), miscellaneous administrative charge of Tk 100 (per tonne), container-scanning fee of Tk254(percontainer),andelectriclockand-sealfeeasperrules.

The operator requires to obtain a licence from Bangladesh Customs for five years to transport goods and the customs will scrutinise previous five years’ records of the applicants, the order reads. Any illegal record and any absolute outstanding of the applicants to the government will be considered as ineligibility for getting the license, it added.

India cannot transport any goods

which are prohibited by the laws of Bangladesh and carrying goods cannot be kept for more than seven days at the ports of Bangladesh. Earlier in October 2018, Bangladesh and India signed the agreement for transporting goods to and from India mainly to provide transhipment facility to India to carry goodstoitsnorth-easternstates.

India has already completed four trial runs on different approved routes — Mongla-Tamabil-Dawki, MonglaBibibazar-Srimantapur, ChattogramSheola-Sutarkandi and Dawki-TamabilChattogrambetweenthetwocountries.

The first trial run under the agreement was carried out in July 2020 when goods were transported from Haldia port in Kolkata to the Chittagong seaportandthefinaltrialruntoconnect Chattogram and Mongla ports to north eastern states via India-Bangladesh Protocol Route concluded on 7November,2022.

Welspun One wraps up investments from maiden warehouse fund with south India deal

Parks (WOLP) has announced that it has partnered with GRT Group to develop two warehousing projects in Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs 700 crores. The two projects, both Grade A, will generate 3,000 jobs during thedevelopmentphase.

The first project is being developed through a 50:50 joint venture between GRT Group and Welspun One. It also marks the final investment of WOLP Fund 1 and results in the full commitment of the fund corpus of Rs 500 crore, the warehousing platform saidinapressrelease.

Global Orderbook on the rise after first quarter

N E W Y O R K : T h e g l o b a l orderbook rose by about 160 vessels after the end of the first quarter of 2023, despite lower annual activity. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker XClusiv said that “as the first quarter of 2023 ended, the total orderbook of the four main components of the merchant fleet has increased by about 160 vessels (6.5%) compared to theendofthefirstquarterof2022.The orderbooks of dry bulk, container and gas carrier segments have seen their numbers increase by 19%, 16% and 31% respectively but on the other side tanker orderbook saw its numbers drop almost by half, in fact by more than 40%. Despite the total orderbook increase, the first quarter of 2023 is characterized by fewer new contracts than in Q1/2022, something that may indicate a pause in interest and d e m a n d i n t h e m a r k e t f o r newbuildings as the slots are too far forward and prices are remaining firm”.

According to Xclusiv, “within the first quarter of 2023 the new contracts at the four main segments are 201, while at the same period of 2022 the new contracts were more than double, at 435 contracts and in

Q1/2021 were 586 Owners and investors have really dropped their appetite for bulkers and containers as these two segments show the strongest reduction in demand for new contracts with the bulker orderbook having only 38 new contracts in Q1/2023 and container orderbook having only 37 new contracts in comparison to Q1/2022 when new contracts where 143 and 158 respectively. Gas carrier orderbook has also seen NB numbers going down by 15 contracts, from 52 new contracts in Q1/2022 to only 37 contracts in the same period of 2023. Tanker orderbook is the one which has significantly firmed its numbers despite the loss in the sum of the orders, from only 24 new orders in Q1 2022 to 64 orders in Q1 2023. This points out that the significant reduction of the total tanker orderboook is mainly due the hesitation of owners within 2022 to place new orders and as the wet m a r k e t f r e i g h t r a t e s s e e m sustainable and have gradually improved further towards the end of 2022, the investing interest returned tothetankernewbuildingsegment”.

Theshipbrokeraddedthat“it’snot

only the shipbuilding activity that has increased during the last years but also the newbuilding prices continue to gradually increase, following the upward trend that has started since 2021. Its noteworthy that most of the newbuilding prices in 2023 are about 28% – 38% higher that the Q1/2021 and only about 2 5%-5% higher than in Q1/2022. Price increases were mainly due to the significant rise of the shipbuilding cost, as raw materials, e n e r g y a n d s a l a r i e s m o v e d expectantly higher, but also due to the competition between buyers for the few remaining yard slots. The general strengthening of the US Dollar (that started within the Q2 of 2022) against the main shipbuilding currencies like Yuan, Yen, Won and Euro has significantly helped to restrict the prices’ increase within 2022 to just 2.5%-5%.

Asian yards are dominating the newbuilding market at the four main vessel segments, with Chinese, Japanese and South Korean yards together accounting for about 93% in 2021 and 95% in 2022 of the orderbook in Dry bulk, Tanker, Container and Gas Carrier segments by number of orders.

NEW DELHI: India is exploring the possibility of opening a logistics hub for Indian companies in Panama, Exter nal Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said, asserting that the country’s trade with Latin America is growing and nearing $50 billion.

AELER launches new sustainable Smart Container

SINGAPORE: LogTech company, AELER, has launched its new generation container, ‘Unit One’, at theSingaporeMaritimeWeek.

The container has been unveiled at Sea Asia, Singapore’s anchor maritimeeventon25April.

UnitOneisthefirsttransportation container made from composite, which has made it “stronger, better insulated and smarter,” AELER claimed.

T h e m a t e r i a l s u s e d h a v e reportedly increased the Unit One’s capacity to where a customer would need eight AELER containers instead of 10 regular containers for thesameamountofcargo.

The Unit One container also produces 20 per cent less carbon dioxide(CO2)inoperation.

The container’s aerodynamic exterior also leads to a 4 per cent savingsonfuelconsumption.

Today, 56 per cent of all containers shipped are empty, and AELER aims to bring this number down with the UnitOnecontainer.

300 kilogrammes of plastic materials used inside regular containers to protect and isolate the goods they transport.

AELER, however, has reported that such is not needed with its container as its composite build

ensuresoptimalpassiveinsulation.

“The containers’ structural insulation results in a significant reductionintemperature variations, reducing fitting time and costs to provide a viable alternative for specific use cases such as chemicals, luxury goods and food andbeverages,”AELERclaimed.

Allcargo Group introduces Libraries in rural schools to cultivate culture of reading

A recent study published in JAMA Paediatrics revealed that since the pandemic, screen time among children has gone up by 52 percent, globally. The study found that children who were exposed to an average of two hours of screen time a day performed worse on attention and executive function tests at the age of nine. According to a recent study by Indian-origin professors at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as mobile-phone access becomes widespread in India, children are spending up to three-four hoursdailyonscreens,exceedingtherecommendedscreen time limit of 60 minutes a day, or about 420 minutes a week, set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). In order to reduce screen time and promote healthy reading habits, parents and educators may encourage children to read more books. Reading books also promotes literacy, improvescognitiveskillsandboostscreativity.

The programme has helped enrich teaching and learning programmes, support inquiry-driven learning, literacyandreading.Ithasalsoaidedimprovingtheschools’ value amid the community and has made students understandtheimportanceofinformationandliteracy.

PSA expands Cargo Solutions Network in Türkiye with acquisition of Alisan Logistics
