Adani Group looks to partner with Uber to roll out electric vehicles

NEW DELHI: The Adani Group is currently working on a strategic partnership with ridesharing platform Uber to introduce its electric passenger cars The partnership also plans to bring Uber services under Adani One, which was launched in 2022. Gautam Adani, the Chairman, met with Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi on February 24 during his visit to India and hinted at possible future collaborations between his conglomerate and the ride-hailing app.

Taking to X, both business leaders appreciated their conversation on the Indian growth story and their vision for the subcontinent.

The Uber CEO said he met the h e a d o f t h e p o r t s - t o - e n e r g y conglomerate over breakfast for an "absolutely terrific conversation". He also highlighted the mobility service provider's commitment to accelerate EV transition in India.

Uber has announced its plans to replace its entire fleet of vehicles with electric vehicles before 2040. As a part of its commitment to zero-emission mobility, Uber has launched its environmentally friendly EV service, Uber Green, in Delhi.

The Adani Group has pledged to invest $100 billion across various business sectors, including energy transition, over the next ten years. The company is planning to build 10 GW of solar manufacturing

capacity and a large-scale solar farm to generate electricity from sunlight. Additionally, they are investing in battery swapping and EV charging stations.

The Uber CEO arrived in India earlier last week. During this time, the ride-sharing platform Uber on February 22 signed a Memorandum of U n d e r s t a n d i n g ( M o U ) w i t h O p e n N e t w o r k f o r D i g i t a l Commerce (ONDC) to explore an integration with the network to expand the range of mobility offerings on the Uber app.

The partnership with ONDC, a non-profit private organisation founded by the Indian government's Department for P romotion of Industr y and Inter nal Trade, is expected to advance Uber's objective of providing all Indians with dependable, safe, and reasonably priced rides.

Reefer shipping rates rise to be temporary as excess capacity plugs gaps : Drewry

LONDON: The recent rise in reefer shipping rates is expected to prove short lived, as the trade adjusts to the rerouting of vessels and excess containership capacity is deployed to support longer transit times While the subsequent re-routing of cargoes continues to add some delays and complexity in repositioning reefer equipment, this is not expected to have a long-term effect on freight rates.

Drewry’s Global Reefer Container Freight Rate Index, a weighted average of freight rates across reefer intensive trade lanes, declined 37% in 4Q23 to a reading of $4,065 per 40ft container, but is estimated to have recovered moderately in the current quarter.

Ongoing violence in the Red Sea continues to cause shipping lines to reroute cargoes via the Cape of Good Hope, while record low water levels in t h e P a n a m a C a n a l a r e simultaneously driving delays there. While the long-term outcome of events in the Middle East remains highly uncertain, the expectation is for reefer container freight rates to resume their downward trajectory over the course of this year.

US warns of environmental disaster from cargo ship hit by Houthi rebels

WASHINGTON : A cargo ship abandoned in the Gulf of Aden after an attack by Yemeni rebels is taking on water and has left a huge oil slick, in an environmental disaster that US Central Command said could get worse.

Rubymar, a Belize-flagged, British-registered and Lebaneseoperated cargo ship car r ying combustible fertilizer, was damaged in a Sunday missile strike claimed by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Its crew was evacuated to Djibouti

after one missile hit the side of the ship, causing water to enter the engine room and its stern to sag, said its operator, the Blue Fleet Group. A second missile hit the vessel’s deck without causing major damage, Blue Fleet CEO Roy Khoury told.

India’s steel exports at 18-month high in January

NEW DELHI: India’s monthly steel exports hit a 18-month high to 1.1 million tonne in January 2024 on i n c r e a s e d d e m a n d f r o m t h e European Union and supportive global prices.

Besides, competitive domestic prices of steel contributed to rise in export, the research firm said in its latest report. The outbound shipment o f s t e e l i n J a n u a r y 2 0 2 3 w a s

This factor also contributed to the demand for Indian steel in the global markets.

Overall, Indian steel exports may remain largely range-bound or fall slightly in the near term because of the “global trade lull induced by the C h i n e s e l u n a r h o l i d a y s a n d Tet festival in Vietnam,” according to reports.

VOC Port Authority calls global bids to build Rs 7,056 crore Box Terminal in outer harbour

T H O O T H U K U D I : V O Chidambaranar Port Authority, the state-owned entity that runs the port located in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district, has called bids to build a 4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) capacity container terminal in the port’s outer harbour with an investment of Rs 7,055.95 crores, adopting viability gap funding (VGF) as the sole criteria for awarding the 45-year deal, a first in the major port privatisation programme.

The port authority has sought bids based on the lowest VGF quoted by bidders for developing the project, marking a departure from the model f o l l o w e d s o f a r b y t h e U n i o n government owned major ports wherein cargo handling contracts are finalised on the basis of the highest royalty per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) or per ton of cargo quoted by the bidders.

“The VGF shall constitute the sole criteria for evaluation of bids:

The Project shall be awarded to the bidder quoting the lowest VGF,” the port authority wrote in the tender documents.

An Empowered Committee in the Ministry of Finance has granted “in-principle” approval for a VGF of Rs1,950 crore for the project, per documents.

This will be the second port project t o r e c e i v e a V G F f r o m t h e government after the upcoming Vizhinjam Port project being developed by the Adani Group.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the outer harbour project on 28 February at VOC Port, officials said.

The VGF of Rs 1,950 crore translates into 27.64 percent of the total project cost (which is less than 40 percent of the project cost available

under the VGF scheme).

The Union government will c o n t r i b u t e R s 1 , 4 1 1 1 9 c r o r e (about 72 percent of Rs 1,950 crore) as VGF with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways/VOC Port Authority chipping in with the balance Rs 538.81 crore.

The VGF share in the first stage of the project is Rs 686.02 crore while the balance VGF of Rs 1,263.98 crore will be disbursed during the second stage.

If the actual VGF discovered through the bidding process is less than Rs1,950 crore, the VGF to be paid in the two stages will be reduced proportionately.

The port authority said that it was seeking VGF only because of loading the breakwater construction and capital dredging costs onto the private entity developing the project. “Otherwise, there would not have been a requirement of VGF for the port development project only,” it stated.

Tankers: The Next Growth Cycle can be fueled by India

LONDON: The tanker market could be headed for a significant leg of growth in the coming years, as a result of India’s gradual emergence, as a major player in the global economy, which in turn is fueling its oil and refining needs. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Gibson said that “whilst there is significant debate as to the strength of long-term oil demand growth, there is little debate as to where much of that growth will come from; India The world’s most populous country sits far behind China in terms of its oil demand per capita, underscoring how much potential remains. Indeed, the country is set to be the largest single source of demand growth between now and 2030 Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced a plan to raise domestic refining capacity to 9mbd by 2030; however, for this goal to be achieved, significant new investment will be required”.

According to Gibson, “currently, the country is home to 5.8mbd of refining capacity and is planning to add another

1.1mbd by 2028. No new refineries have come online since Indian Oil Corp’s (IOC) 300kbd Paradip refinery in 2016. The greenfield Hindustan Petroleum C o r p o r a t i o n’ s ( H P C L ) 1 8 0 k b d Rajasthan refinery is due to start operations in January 2025, whilst Chennai Petroleum Corp (CPCL) is also b u i l d i n g a 1 8 0 k b d r e f i n e r y a t Nagapattinam in the South East of the country, with completion expected sometime around 2028. The remainder of the 1.1mbd expected to come online by 2028 will be delivered through debottlenecking and expansions at existing facilities”.

“For now, however, the stated goal of 9mbd by 2030 appears out of reach. For this dream to be realised, the expansion of existing facilities will not be enough. For many years, Middle Eastern NOCs have explored building a mega refinery to rival Reliance’s 1.4mbd facility on India’s West Coast As recently as September, Saudi Arabia and India jointly agreed to develop such a project; yet, so far the NOCs have focused on

projects in China where greenfield developments have been easier to plan and execute. Such projects in India have been plagued by issues such as land acquisition, whilst it is unclear whether Abu Dhabi’s NOC is still interested in the project. Nevertheless, with Chinese oil demand expected to peak this d e c a d e , d o w n s t r e a m f o r e i g n investment in India is likely to increase”, said the shipbroker

“In the near term, existing refinery investment would seem sufficient to both meet domestic demand and maintain export volumes; an important consideration for clean tanker demand. Likewise, with little change in crude production the country will see continued growth in feedstock imports and is likely to become increasingly active in the Atlantic basin crude market as production in the West expands. If the country can succeed in achieving its stated aim of 9mbd, then its impact on tanker markets will be even more pronounced”, Gibson concluded.

HONG KONG: Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd (“OOCL”) is delighted to introduce its newest mega containership, “OOCL Abu Dhabi”. OOCL’s fleet structure will be further optimized with the addition of the eighth ecofriendly 24,188 TEU vessel.
