The maiden train was flagged off from Mundra in early April with a full payload.

Thedoublestacktrainservicewill further boost the connectivity of Ahmedabad and will drive better efficiency and significantly lower the overall logistics cost for cargo movement on the route even with fewer rakes, owing to the lower haulage rates and lesser or zero port ground rent (PGR) resulting from the faster evacuationofcontainersfromtheport.

Speaking on the launch of the new service, Adhendru Jain, CEO Rail and Inland Terminal, DP World Subcontinent said, “Robust infrastructure and efficient logistics are crucial for boosting economic growth and exports. Situated about 40 km from Ahmedabad, DP World’s Ahmedabad Inland Terminal is well-connected to the state highway and the rail network. It has a container handling capacity of more than one lakh TEUs per annum, and it offers a host of services and features, including a customs-notified warehouse, inventory management services, and specialised equipment to

handle steel cargo. The terminal follows global safety standards and offers several value-added features such as a container repair facility and electronic weighbridges.

PM welcomes inauguration of National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways & Coasts at IIT Madras

NEW DELHI: Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways & Coasts (NTCPWC) at DiscoveryCampusofIIT,Madras. NTCPWCwasestablishedunderthe

ambitious Sagarmala program at a cost of Rs. 77 crore. The Role Model centre will provide solutions to challenges in the maritime sector through scientific support, education, applied research and technology transfer at the local,

regional, national and international levels.

The Prime Minister replied: "The NTCPWC at @iitmadras will strengthen the growth of India’s maritimesector.

Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Corridor will double Port’s handling capacity : Nitin Gadkari

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said that the greenfield double-decker elevated highway between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal in Tamil Nadu would reduce the travel time for vehicles boundfortheportbyanhour.

While sharing the graphical images of the project in a series of tweets, the Minister said, “Under the Bharatmala Pariyojana initiative, a new Greenfield CorridorProjectisunderwayinthestate of Tamil Nadu. This involves the development of a Double Tier 4-lane Elevated Corridor from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal. The completion of this project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in Chennai by segregating localtrafficmovementontoonetierofthe

Elevated highway. Additionally, it will doublethehandlingcapacityoftheport, reduce waiting times at the port, and decrease travel time for vehicles bound fortheportbyanhour.”.

“The project is specifically designed to manage the expected increase in port-bound traffic, which is predicted to double by 2040 from current levels. In light of the dynamic leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji, our unwavering commitment lies in expediting and optimizing the mobility sector by means of unparalleled infrastructural advancements”, Gadkaritweeted.

The20.6-kilometrefour-lanedoubledeckerelevatedexpressway,beingbuilt at a cost of Rs. 5,800 crore, is likely to be completed by December 2024, the

ministerhadsaidearlier.

In October 2022, Gadkari had said that the project would be developed in four sections which would start from inside the Chennai Port and end after theMaduravoyalinterchange.

The expressway once completed, would serve as a dedicated freight corridor for Chennai bound port traffic and increase the handling capacity of the city’s port by 48% and subsequently reduce the waiting time at the port by sixhours,theministerhadsaid.

The first level of the double-decker corridor would be for light vehicles between Koyambedu and Chennai port, while the second level would be designed specifically for heavy vehicles between Chennai port and Maduravoyal.

NEW DELHI: Logistics will be an area full of opportunities for young students in the coming years with a huge scope for investment, entrepreneurship and employment, Union Minister of State for Skill Development Rajeev Chandrasekhar saidrecently.

Speaking at a conference on “Transforming Logistics for Coastal Economies” ahead of the third G20 Education Working Group meeting scheduled to be held from April 27 to 29 in Bhubaneswar, he said that the logistics will be an area full of opportunities for young students in the coming years, as much as Semiconductors, electronics, and Information technology, with huge scopeforinvestment,entrepreneurship andemployment.

“This is an interesting time for the world, representing opportunities and

challengesandinthiscontext,Indiahas become the fastest growing nation of the world. And India is being looked upon by the world with a lot more respect,”headded.

The Minister noted that the world is looking at resilient logistics and trusted supply chains, moving away from risk andtowardstrustedresilienteconomy.

“With this, the focus and discussion on logistics is important in coastal stateslikeOdisha.In2014,82%ofmobile phones consumed in India were imported, in 2022, almost 100% mobile phones consumed in India are manufacturedinIndia,”hesaid.

In 2014, India used to export almost zero mobile phones and this year alone, India has exported Apple phones, Samsung phones made in India to the tuneofabout11billiondollars.

“One of the arguments for India for many decades had been that India did

not have a viable market and the capacity to become a global manufacturing hub as the logistics cost of doing business in India was not competitive. Today global majors are manufacturing semiconductors, electronics, mobiles and many more products in India, exporting and selling in India as well as the underlying logistics ecosystem has become more efficient,”headded.

The Minister emphasised on the vision of the Prime Minister which suggests that as much as you focus on receiving degrees, in the same manner, you should focus on acquiring skills, as that will increase the prospects of your employability in modern and post pandemictechade.

“As the future is about skilling, upskilling and reskilling, and skilling will always remain a continuous process,”headded.

CHENNAI: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the Discovery Campus of the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts at IITM, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This centre aims at enabling Research & development for the marine sector enabling solutions towards achieving the ultimate goal of building a robust marineindustryinthecountry.Thisstate-of-the-artcentre will ensure advancement in the field of maritime technology, as well as modernisation & upgradation possibilitiesintheport&operationstowardsachievingthe visionofAtmanirbharBharatby2047.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sonowal said, “With the inauguration of this state-of-the-art centre dedicated towards research and development of technological solutions to enable growth of marine sector, we move closer to achieving the vision of our Prime Minister ÄShri Narendra Modi ji to make India an atmanirbhar country.Theroleofmarinesectorissupremeinthenation building. As we continue to embark on our journey to improve our performance, such centres will play a pivotal role in this regard. We believe that our rich & talented pool of engineers & scientists will provide cutting edge modern solutions able to deal with dynamic challenges of the marine sector. TheUnionMinisteralsoassuredthatthisfacilitywould be expanded to include more World Class Lab Facilities andInnovationHubstosupportMaritimeStart-Ups.

To advance the Sagarmala Programme’s objectives, NTCPWCwilldealinappliedresearchwhileanalyzingand fostering port and maritime industry activities. Major Ports including Deendayal Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Paradeep Port, Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port, VOCport,NewMangalorePort,VisakhapatnamPorthave contributed generously toward creation of the institute.

Significant contributions have also been provided by Inland Waterways Authority of India. The SMP Kolkata, Mormugao port and Cochin port have also partnered in thisactivitybyprovidingmajorcasestudycenters.

Under Sagarmala Scheme, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has partially funded 171 projects worth Rs. 10,900 Crore across coastal states and UTs. Out of 171 projects, 48 projects worth Rs. 2,900 Crore have beencompletedand123projectsworthRs.8,000Croreare undervariousstagesofimplementationanddevelopment. In FY 22-23, 37 projects worth Rs. 2500 Crore have been sanctioned by this Ministry under the Sagarmala Scheme. Toharnesstheefficiencyfromprivatesectorinoperations, 52 projects worth Rs. 40,200 Crore have been completed at Major Ports in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Further, 84 projects worth Rs. 49,500 Crore are under various stages of implementation and development. In addition to above, Sagarmala Development Company Limited has invested Rs. 530 Crore in 4 projects in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal, which have beencompleted.

An impetus has been given by the Government under the Sagarmala Program to undertake projects which will result in shift of cargo from land-based transportation to coastal and inland waterways mode which is sustainable and environment friendly. The overall amount of coastal freight handled at ports has increased by ~16% in FY2022-23whencomparedtopreviousfiscalyearbecause of these measures. It is the result of these efforts at ports thattotalcargohandledatportshasregisteredagrowthof ~8.6 % in FY 2022-23 when compared to previous fiscal year. This has contributed in India achieving the $440 billionofmerchandiseexportprojectedforFY2022-23.

MoCI terminates anti-dumping probe on imports of a Chinese chemical

NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry(MoCI) has terminated an anti-dumping investigation into the import of a chemical, used in dying industry, from China following a requestfromthedomesticindustry.

On September 30, 2022, the ministry’s investigation arm Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) initiated a probe into alleged dumping of ‘sulphur black’ from China, followingacomplaintbyadomesticfirmAtulLtd.

HoweveronApril15thisyear,theapplicanthaswithdrawn its petition and has requested for termination of the

investigationcitingcertainreasons.

“The authority hereby terminates the investigation…against the imports of Sulphur Black originatinginorexportedfromChina,”theDGTRhassaidina notification. It is mainly used for dying cellulose fiber, viscose staplefiberandyam.

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Panama Foreign Minister Janaina Tewaney held a joint press conference on Monday after holding discussions on several bilateral issues related to healthandtrade.

Addressing the joint briefing, EAM Jaishankar said India and Panama discussed what can be done to expand the cooperation and how Indian Pharmaceuticals can bebroughttoPanama.

“In the last three years, Indian pharmacy has made a change in the world. In covid we supplied vaccines, and we exported medicines to most of the developed world,” Jaishankar said.

“Covid has taught us not to be dependent on very limited centres of production, on supply chains that can

be disrupted so it is very important that there are more regional capacities, it is particularly important in health. It is not just trading, as research goes into it, we discussed how we can bring Indian pharmaceuticals to India,” the EAM added.

Jaishankar said further that India sees Latin America as a region that is not too far as the trade is heading

towards50billiondollars.

“Our companies are doing big projects in Latin America, we have large operations of Indian companies, we have daily exchanges, we have a capacity building and we have a diaspora here,” theEAMadded.

Speaking on the bilateral ties between India and Panama, Jaishankar, “It is a great pleasure to be in Panama as politically India and Panama have been strong close friendstraditionally.

“We share attributes of democracies, markets, economy and pluralisticsocieties,”hesaid.

“Our world outlook is also very similar, as we are part of large south-south cooperation there is a very good base of understanding and friendship,”headded.

MUMBAI: Union Minister of Commerce Shri Piyush Goyal on Sunday said the world is now looking up to India and its industries and this is the right time for entrepreneurs and industry players to grasp the opportunity and grow exports. country, the Commerce and Industry Minister said while addressing the 49th India Gem and Jewellery Awards.

CONCOR orders 100 LNG trucks at Blue Energy Commercial Vehicles

NEW DELHI: Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR) has placed an order for 100 liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks at Punebased Blue Energy Commercial Vehicles Pvt Ltd as the state-owned company takes first steps to cut hazardous emissions and align with the government’s larger climate changegoals.

Separately, Concor has ordered 100 trailers at Raigarh, Chhattisgarhbased Jagdamba Trailers Pvt Ltd, that will carry the steel containers on theLNGtrucks,sourcessaid.

During the earnings call on the third quarter financial results held on 24 January, V Kalyana Rama, Chairman and Managing Director, Concor, revealed the company’s plan

to introduce LNG trucks for the first andlastmilemovementofcontainers.

“We will be experimenting with LNG transfers at our major hub Kathuwas and then we will be expanding it to all the terminals,” KalyaRamasaidon24January.

“All these new things we are bringing…because the demand is there in domestic sector and also to encourage more and more domestic traffic into containers and to add value-added services and to make it a complete business solution which will increase our margins so that the overall margin pressure will not be too much,” he added.

Drewry: World Container Index up by 4% last week

LONDON: Drewry’s composite World Container Index increased by 4% to $1,773.58 per 40ft container last week – the firstincreasein15weeks.

• The composite index has increased by 4% last week, but has dropped by 77% when compared with the same weeklastyear.

• The latest Drewry WCI composite index of $1,774 per 40-foot container is now 83% below the peak of $10,377 reached in September 2021. It is 34% lower than the 10-year average of $2,688, indicating a return to more normal prices, but remains 25% higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of $1,420.

• The composite index increased by 4% to $1,773.58 per 40ftcontainer,butis77%lowerthanthesameweekin2022. Transpacific eastbound rates rose, reflecting the General Rate Increases implemented by carriers from mid-April. Freight rates on Shanghai – New York gained 12% or $297 to $2,849 per feu. Rates on Shanghai – Los Angeles surged 11% or $182 to settle at $1,856 per 40ft box. Rates on Shanghai – Genoa inched up by 1% to $2,268 per 40ft container.However,ratesonNewYork–Rotterdamfell5% to $969 per feu. Rates on Rotterdam – Shanghai and LosAngeles–Shanghaidropped4%eachto$618and$1,009 per 40ft box, respectively. Rates on Rotterdam – New York have now decreased for 19 consecutive weeks and saw a weekly drop of 1% to $4,881 per 40ft container. Rates on Shanghai – Rotterdam hovered around the previous week’s level. Drewry expects East-West spot rates on routes other thanthetransatlantictoriseinthenextfewweeks.
