NEW DELHI: India’s finished steel imports from China hit a seven-year high during the first five months of the 2024/25 financial year, provisional government data showed.
India’s overall finished steel imports also reached a six-year high at 3.7 million metric tons in the AprilAugust period of this year, and the country was a net importer
The world’s second-biggest crude steel producer has been consuming the alloy at a faster pace with robust demand from the infrastructure and automotive sectors.
India shipped 1.1 million tons of the alloy from China in the April-August period, up 31.7 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.
China was the largest exporter of
finished steel to India during this period, followed by South Korea and Japan, primarily shipping stainless steel, hotrolled coil steel, galvanised sheets, and plates.
India’s federal steel ministry is discussing various trade measures against imports in response to calls from Indian mills.
India’s imports of finished steel from Russia during the April-August period also hit a six-year high, the data showed.
Russia, whose exports of finished steel at around 54,000 tons, more than doubled from a year ago, was also the fifth-largest exporter of finished steel to India during the period.
Domestic steel prices fell in August, India’s steel ministry noted in its report.
“Indian domestic rebar prices fell during the month under review reflecting the ongoing challenges in the market which included supply-demand mismatch and falling offers,” it said.
However, for April-August, domestic demand was robust, as finished steel consumption touched a seven-year high at 60.3 million metric tons, up 13.8 per cent from a year ago.
But, overseas markets were subdued and finished steel exports fell to a seven-year low during the period.
India’s overall finished steel exports were 1.9 million tons in April-August, down 39.6 per cent from a year ago.
Italy, the top export destination for India’s finished steel exports, imported around 360,000 tons, down 48.3 per cent year-on-year

The Indian Gover nment is stepping on the gas to grow at more than 7% annually and is hoping to achieve $7 trillion by 2030. It has accelerated manufacturing with PLI schemes, and is actively pushing to set up semiconductor plants.
PUNE: India’s automotive sector is experiencing significant growth, a trend mirrored at the 64th SIAM Annual Convention The focus has shifted from merely reducing imports to expanding exports, aiming to make the Indian automobile industry truly “atma nirbhar” (self-reliant) and positioning it as a leading global auto manufacturing hub—an ambition the government is actively pursuing. The Indian automobile industry is currently the third largest auto industry across the world.
The Government’s strategy is clear: by focusing on cleaner technologies, Indian vehicles will
meet global demand for sustainable solutions.
To achieve its ambitious goals, the Indian automobile industry will focus not only on sustainability but also on delivering high-quality products
Nitin Gadkari emphasised that India’s advantage lies in its skilled, cost-effective labour force and expertise in manufacturing valuable products. These strengths, he believes, will help India rise to the top of the global automotive industry.

WASHINGTON DC: India will host the inagural symposium of the new regional maritime initiative for Training in the IndoPacific (MAITRI), to train Quad partners “to monitor and secure their waters, enforce their laws, and deter unlawful behaviour.”
The first MAITRI workshop will be hosted by India in 2025, said Nancy Izzo Jackson, Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs.
“We are also proud to announce a new regional maritime initiative for training in the Indo-Pacific or MAITRI with an inaugural symposium in 2025 that will be hosted by India,” she said in a post on X, unveiling a key component of the Quad’s maritime strategy
The MAITRI initiative was among the major outcomes of the sixth summit level meeting of the Quad group of countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Delaware.
The initiative highlights the Quad’s commitment to regional security and capacity building, particularly in the maritime domain.
It also builds on the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA), a previous initiative designed to deliver maritime domain awareness information to partners. With MAITRI, countries in the IndoPacific can better enforce their maritime laws and deter unlawful activities.
The Quad leaders expressed their deep concern over recent “dangerous and aggressive actions in the maritime domain,” according to the Wilmington Declaration They condemned illicit missile launches and affirmed their collective opposition to unilateral actions that threaten peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
They emphasised the need for int
cooperation and adherence to the rule of law, democratic values, and the peaceful settlement of disputes Their commitment reflects the Quad’s broader strategic
alignment in the region, where they have become a force for maintaining global security
Among the key initiatives announced was the Quad-atSea Ship Observer Mission, scheduled to launch in 2025.
This initiative aims to improve interoperability and maritime safety, advancing cooperation among member countries.
Additionally, the Quad introduced the Indo-Pacific Logistics Network pilot project to bolster disaster response capabilities through shared airlift capacity and logistics resources.
These initiatives complement previous Quad efforts in the Indo-Pacific, including underwater cable connectivity and disaster resilience projects. The Quad has invested over USD 140 million in underwater cable development to strengthen telecommunication networks in the Pacific Such initiatives demonstrate the Quad’s ongoing commitment to ensuring long-term peace, stability, and development in the Indo-Pacific region while helping partners manage maritime challenges effectively.
The Quad leaders also welcomed the launch of a Quad maritime legal dialogue to support efforts to uphold the rules-based maritime order in the Indo-Pacific.
NEW DELHI: The Shipping Ministry has carried out a detailed study and has got inputs from multiple stakeholders, and is in the process of “finalising schemes for assisting shipbuilding.” This includes setting up a Rs. 25,000-crore Maritime Development Fund, aimed at providing low-cost, long-term financing options.
The schemes will include renewal of an updated Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy (SBFAP 2.0) with special incentives for green ships, ship breaking credit notes, establishment of an apex body to steer the implementation of SBFAP 2.0, among others, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, told.
India saw a 22 per cent increase in India-flagged ships or vessels over a 10 year period to 1526 in 2023-24
As per Ministry data, India in FY24, built ships with 26,412 gross tonnage (GT), recording a 19 per cent y-o-y increase. Maritime Development Fund
The big push though will be towards setting up a Rs. 25,000crore Maritime Development Fund, for providing low-cost, long-term financing to the maritime sector
“This fund addresses the decline in India’s share of overseas cargo carried by Indian flagged vessels; and mitigates risks associated with foreign fleet reliance,” Sonowal said.
According to him, the economic impact includes increased ship acquisition and Indian ownership, job creation, energy, food, and economic security, supply chain resilience, forex and GDP growth.
“The fund is expected to support creation of Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) for procuring and operating around 1,000 Indian-built ships over the next decade apart from
supporting financial needs in other areas of maritime development,” the Minister added.
Assistance Policy
The second phase of the SBFAP , will consider special incentives for green ships, which usage low carbon emitting fuels or green hydrogen, Sonowal said.
Reforms in the ship-breaking industry are being worked on too. Points under consideration include issuing credit notes to the shipowner when their vessel is scrapped in an Indian yard. This would be reimbursable against the cost of construction of a new vessel, if the same is being constructed at an Indian shipyard “An apex body to steer the implementation of SBFAP 2 0 and coordinate the other initiatives for growth of shipbuilding industry such as establishment of infrastructure capacity, development of capabilities and skills is being considered too,” he said.
Capacity Building
In terms of capacity building activities, a separate set of proposals are “under preparation at MoPSW”. Some of the points being taken up include establishing a national centre for shipbuilding capability that will offer courses, apprenticeships, and internships to Indian manpower in the maritime sector.
“Incentives to industry for research and development in the shipbuilding sector; and funding of common maritime assets and test facilities for the shipbuilding sector are being looked into,” Sonowal said.
Incentives for industry players to establish new shipbuilding facilities, ancillary units as well as supporting industries such as container manufacturing in the country in collaboration with coastal states will also be taken up.

The Federation of Indian E x p o r t O r g a n i s a t i o n s (FIEO), an apex export promotion organisation of India, (set up by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India) has partnered with Stenn to provide tailored financial solutions that will address liquidity challenges and enhance the competitiveness of Indian businesses especially SMEs in the global marketplace. This collaboration seeks to drive export growth by equipping SMEs with the necessary financial tools to scale their operations and seize international opportunities.
The MoU signed between FIEO and Stenn was exchanged by Dr Ajay Sahai, Director General & CEO, FIEO and Mr Noel Hillman, Chief Commercial Ofcer, Stenn in the presence of Mr Ashwani Kumar, President, FIEO; Mr Marcio Arnecke, Chief Marketing Ofcer, Stenn; Mr Pratik Ashok Navale, Asst Director, FIEO and Mr Priyesh Ranjan, Senior Director Sales & Partnership (India),Stenn.
FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar while addressing the event said that it is extremely momentous occasion to witness the unveiling of MOU signing between the two premier organisations – Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), the apex trade promotion body in India and the Stenn, the leading Fintech Co. providing post-shipment credit to SMEs in International Trade. Mr Ashwani Kumar reiterated that he is confident that the MOU will pave the way for addressing the working capital requirements of exports focussing on post-shipment. This will also lead to the healthy competition amongst the factoring companies in India helping in bringing down the cost thus benefitting exporters.
FIEO Chief added that the credit challenges have increased with geo-political head winds and interest rate moving upward in the last few years. However, with inflation softening, we have seen downward movement in the key rates led by US Federal Reserve, which reduced the rate by 50 basis points last week. Mr Kumar also added that with inflation softening in India and GDP growth moving upward, our central bank will also take an appropriate call for revising the key rates. FIEO President asked the media gathering at the event in urging the Government to re-introduce Interest Equalization Scheme on a sustainable basis to provide the continuity and stability in the business environment of the exports sector.
Signing the MoU, Dr Ajay Sahai, Director General and CEO of FIEO, stated that India's ambitious target of USD 2 trillion in exports by 2030 demands urgent action to address the criticalfinancinggapfacedbyourexporters, particularlySMEs With only 15% of SMEs' addressable credit needs currently met by formal channels, we are stifling the potential of our most dynamic sector. This credit crunch is not just a business issue; it's a national economic imperative. To achieve our export goals and secure India's position as a global economic powerhouse, we must leverage innovative fintech solutions and strategic partnerships to revolutionize export finance By harnessing technology for streamlined credit assessment and disbursement, and collaborating with forward-thinking financial partners, we can unlock the full potential of our SMEs. This is not just about providing capital; it's about empowering our businesses to become global leaders, driving our nation's growth, and realizing our vision of India as a titan of international trade. The government has made exports a national priority, and it is incumbent upon all stakeholders to rise to this challenge Together, we will transform India's export landscapeandcementourplaceontheworldstage.
Dr Sahai added, "We envision a future where Indian SMEs are leaders in global trade, contributing to the nation's growth and prosperity This partnership with Stenn aligns perfectly with India's economic goals, and together, we are shaping a future where Indian businesses can excel on the world stage."
Echoing these aspirations, Mr. Noel Hillman, Chief Commercial Ofcer of Stenn said, "Our collaboration with FIEO represents a strong commitment to helping Indian exporters expand their global presence. By providing flexible financing solutions and mitigating payment risks, we empower businesses to scale rapidly and compete effectively with larger players. FIEO has been instrumental in facilitating trade and driving the growth of India's goods and services exports. We are confident that FIEO members will benefit significantly from Stenn’s support in their growth journey, and we are grateful to FIEO for partnering with us in this shared opportunity to make a meaningful impact."
Stenn’s financing tools, designed to unlock growth, allow exporters to scale up without the typical constraints of working capital. With seamless access to trade finance, Indian SMEs can take on larger orders, diversify into new markets, and strengthen their presence in existing ones. As part of this collaboration, Stenn and FIEO aim to support the global ambitions of Indian exporters by helping them break into new regions and seize emerging opportunities across the globe.
Moreover, the partnership will include educational workshops and seminars designed to impart valuable knowledge on trade finance strategies and best practices, enhancing exporters’ financial acumen and operational efficiency The collaboration will also support market expansion efforts, providing strategic financial planning and resources to help exporters explore new markets and scale their operations effectively.
As India pushes towards self-reliance through the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, Stenn’s partnership with FIEO is particularly timely By addressing critical liquidity issues, Stenn helps Indian SMEs become more self-sufficient, enabling them to seize global trade opportunities without depending on external financial pressures. The financing solutions provided ensure that Indian exporters are well-equipped to meet the demands of international buyers while retaining financial independence.
Stenn recently launched the BETA Hub, a digital platform aimed at revolutionising the way Indian SMEs engage in global trade. The platform serves as a space for collaboration, networking, and innovation, offering exporters access to cutting-edge financial tools and insights while also facilitating connections with potential partners across international markets. The BETA Hub will act as a catalyst for Indian exporters, helping them bridge the gap between local business practices and the demands of global trade.
Stenn, the fastest-growing online platform for financing small and medium-sized businesses engaged in international trade, has announced its strategic expansion in India to address the growing financing needs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). With over $20 billion worth of invoices financed globally, Stenn has already made significant inroads in supporting international trade. By 2026, Stenn aims to play a crucial role in driving India's export economy, empowering SMEs to contribute significantly to the country's ambitious trade targets.
NEW DELHI: The Government’s measures such as cutting certain port charges and purchasing additional container vessels by Shipping Corp will help boost export competitiveness, Chairman of the CII National Committee on Export-Import Sanjay Budhia said recently He said that these initiatives will significantly benefit the Indian industry by easing export operations.
“This move will reduce logistical bottlenecks, enhance cost efficiency for e x p o r t e r s , a n d i m p r o v e t h e competitiveness of Indian goods in global
markets,” Budhia, who is also Managing Director of Patton Group, said Industries will experience smoother trade flows, shorter delivery times, and lower costs, fostering growth in exports and making Indian products more attractive to international buyers, he added.
The measures will also significantly improve export competitiveness by decreasing the overall costs involved in shipping goods and will help make Indian exports more competitively priced in internationalmarkets,Budhiasaid.
“It would also help in attracting new exporters, especially small and
medium enterprises (SMEs) that were previously deterred by high logistics costs,” he said. Lower costs at the port level can also stimulate higher volumes of trade, leading to economies of scale, further reducing logistics costs and e n h a n c i n g o v e r a l l e x p o r t competitiveness, he added.
“The step to buy five container vessels to boost the cargo handling capacity is also well appreciated since this will help address the issue of shortages of shipping grade containers, which often leads to higher freight rates for Indian containers,” Budhai said
NEW DELHI: Foreign Container Shipping Lines operating into and out of India told top Government officials last week that there was “no immediate solution” to the problems faced by the nation’s exporters on steep freight rates, shortage of containers and lack of space on ships but said that the situation was “easing out” with rates dropping by 30-40 percent from the east coast and by 30 percent from Nhava Sheva/Mundra to the US east coast.
Freight rates to the U.S. are now in the range of $4,300-4,500 per twenty-foot equivalent unit or TEU, down from $5,500-6,000 per TEU, a few days ago.
To Europe, the rates have declined to $3,000-3,200 per TEU from $3900-4,000 per TEU, a shipping line executive who attended the 18 September meeting called by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, said.
“Basically, all the cargo that had to be shipped for the Christmas season shopping in the West has been shipped.
Now, there is less cargo. When there is less cargo, it is easy to get space on ships and freight rates automatically are coming down,” the executive said. A Leading Foreign Shipping Lines Association made it clear that freight rates are dropping, and it is expected to drop further, especially on the Europe sector. But to the US, there is a chance of rates probably holding up because of the impending strike by the longshoremen from October 1 This may create an artificial supply chain crisis

ANTWERP: The Port of AntwerpBruges and the Flemish Institute for Te c h n o l o g i c a l R e s e a r c h ( V I T O ) examined the potential of the Antwerp c h e m i c a l c l u s t e r t o i n c o r p o r a t e recyclates to replace fossil raw materials. They analyzed how the use of recycled and renewable raw materials could be increased, aiming to anchor the Antwerp industrial cluster in a sustainable, resilient, and future-proof manner as a vital part of European industry.
Commissioned by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, VITO studied the concrete possibilities to replace fossil raw materials that form the feedstock for the Antwerp chemical cluster as much as possible with either bio-based or recycled sources of carbon To better understand this potential, VITO scrutinized the existing industrial system for the production and recycling of plastics in Belgium, as well as in neighboring countries
From mechanical to chemical recycling
The analysis shows that currently, plastic recycling in Belgium is almost exclusively done through mechanical recycling. Although Belgium is the European champion in plastic recycling according to a recent study by Plastics Europe, with a recycling rate of 39%, a significant portion of plastic waste is still incinerated. However, mechanical recycling can only process a limited portion of plastic waste into recycled products For these limitations of mechanical recycling, the chemical industry provides solutions, both for processing them into new raw materials and for using these raw materials as feedstock for their production processes.
The Antwerp Model
In its study, VITO proposes the Antwerp Model, which aims for defossilization by replacing fossil carbon sources with renewable sources. As home to the largest integrated chemical cluster in Europe and the main hub for the production, treatment, and distribution of plastic pellets - Antwerp produces 4 million tons of polymers annually - the port is the ideal location to develop a circular hub and take a leading role.
Development of the circular hub
The first steps to develop this circular hub and bring the entire chain together were taken on September 18
during an interactive workshop at the Antwerp Port House. VITO presented the study results, including the Antwerp Model. This was followed by a panel discussion with sector associations essenscia PolyMatters and Cefic, delving into challenges related to policy on one hand and strengths such as the presence of the chemical cluster on the other. All parties emphasized the call for companies to collaborate in forming a cohesive circular cluster.
All partners also strongly believe that despite the challenges, chemical recycling in Belgium holds promise due to significant polymer production, high expertise in waste management, and excellent connections with other clusters and the rest of the world, with the Antwerp port as the ideal circular hub.
"The Port of Antwerp-Bruges plays a crucial role in the transition to a more sustainable economy," said Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of the Port of AntwerpBruges. "By collaborating with VITO and other partners, we can strengthen our port as a center for innovation and sustainability, which is beneficial not only for the environment but also for the economy and employment in our region."
“For the future of the Antwerp chemical cluster, collaboration between industry, government, and research organizations is essential to accelerate the transition to a circular economy and defossilization," says Inge Neven, CEO of VITO. "VITO aims to further support the chemical sector with targeted technological innovations and by providing test facilities and pilot installations. However, today, the demand for chemically recycled raw materials still lags behind due to higher costs compared to primary raw materials. To address this and ensure competitive scale, regulation and supportive measures are indispensable."
MUMBAI: JSW Infrastructure Limited (the “Company”), a part of the JSW Group and India’s second-largest private commercial port operator, has taken delivery of a new, state-of-the-art dredger from Netherlands based IHC Dredging.
This investment into the second dredger, aligns with the company’s FY2030 growth plan to boost capacity from 170 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) to 400 MTPA. The new dredger will support both greenfield and brownfield expansion projects at multiple ports of the company.
