MUMBAI: SCI is delighted to induct container vessel M V SCI Delhi in the Europe Service to bolster Indian Export –Import Trade by enhancing connectivity across key European ports This addition to our in-chartered fleet signifies our commitment to support Indian exporters & strengthen global trade networks.
OSLO: Two weeks af ter
signing the Hamburg Declaration on the Decarbonisation of Global Shipping, Höegh Aurora, the world’s largest and most environmentally friendly car carrier ever built, will arrive in the very same city, celebrating the joint commitment to establish green shipping corridors that utilize sustainable green fuels while swiftly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental impact of the global shipping
The Höegh Aurora is the very first of Höegh Autoliners 12 Aurora Class vessels. Two of them, the Höegh Aurora and the Höegh Borealis are already in commercial operations, while the remaining 10 of these marvels of modern engineering and deep-sea transportation will be built and delivered by the first half of 2028
Already operating the world’s most sustainable pure car andtruckcarrier(PCTC)fleetsailingtheoceanstoday,Höegh Autoliners’ green fleet renewal program confirms the company’smissiontoleadtheindustrytonetzeroby2040
Today, shipping accounts for around 3 percent of all global emissions. 940 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. 90% of shipping emissions come from deep-sea transportation.
That needs to change, and Höegh Autoliners is leading that change with our Aurora Class. The vessels will be cutting carbon emissions per car transported by up to 58 percent from the current industry average, representing the future of the shipping industry
Andreas Enger: A monumental leap towards net zero
In 2027, when the first Aurora is powered entirely by clean ammonia, nearly all carbon emissions will be eliminated. With our Auroras, we are sailing for sustainability.
“It is great to see the Höegh Aurora again She is already changing the industry, pioneering efforts to combat pollution in a hard-to abate segment With the Höegh Aurora and the rest of the Aurora Class, we are setting new standards for sustainable deep-sea transportation, making a significant stride toward our 2040 net zero emissions goal As the largest and most environmentally friendly PCTCs ever built, the HöeghAuroraembodiesthechangeourindustryneeds,”says Andreas Enger, CEO of Höegh Autoliners
As the ammonia engines are somewhat delayed it seems that we will have vessels 9, 10 and 11 delivered in 2027 and vessel number 12 in the first half of 2028
The Höegh Aurora has a capacity of up to 9,100 cars – and with strengthened decks and enhanced internal ramp
systems, she can carry Electric Vehicles on all 14 decks.
The 1500 square meters of solar panels on the top deck reduces electricity production from the generators by up to 30-35 percent. She is also primed to embrace electric shore power for emissions-free port operations.
After initially having bunkered LNG in Shanghai, the Höegh Aurora loaded cargo in Japan and South Korea before heading to Europe, calling ports in Belgium, France, UK, Sweden, and the Netherlands before Hamburg and Germany
In Germany’s biggest and the third largest port in Europe, Höegh Autoliners will host a grand event for hundreds of the company’s customers and partners, celebrating the monumental leap towards sustainable deepsea shipping, the Höegh Aurora is.
Oskar Orstadius: Decarbonizing the Supply Chain for Customers
"With the launch of our Aurora class vessels, Höegh Autoliners is taking a significant step toward decarbonizing the supply chain for our customers. These cutting-edge vessels, capable of operating on zero-carbon fuels, demonstrate our commitment to eco-conscious maritime transport. By integrating these environmentally responsible ships into our fleet, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also helping our customers meet their sustainability goals," says Oskar Orstadius, CSO at Höegh Autoliners.
Sebjørn Dahl: The answer to carbon-conscious customers
The Höegh Aurora and the rest of the Aurora class are equipped with the newest and most modern maritime technology, including state-of-the-art safety and digitalization solutions.
“The Aurora Class is the crown jewel of our groundbreaking, industry-transforming green fleet renewal program. These vessels meet the demands of our growing number of carbon-conscious customers seeking emission reductions and sustainable transportation. We will not rest until we achieve net-zero operations”, says Sebjørn Dahl, COO of Höegh Autoliners.
With the Aurora Class, Höegh Autoliners are raising the demand for ammonia as a viable, zero-carbon maritime fuel.
Höegh Autoliners has already partnered with several of the world’s leading ammonia producers to ensure the supply and usage of green ammonia – these include Yara Clean Ammonia, Norwegian North Ammonia, Sumitomo Corporation, and more.
Positive trend in container throughput continues; geopolitical situation slows growth in other product groups
A N T W E R P :
After nine months, P o r t o f A n t w e r p -
Bruges saw a total t h r o u g h p u t o f 210.5 million tonnes, an increase of 3% compared to the same period last year and a stabilisation in comparison to the second quarter of 2024 Demand for container transport remains strong, while the ongoing geopolitical and economic instability impacts other cargo types.
Despite these challenges, the port continues to invest in sustainable and innovative projects to support energy transition and industrial growth.
Container throughput in tons increased by 8 9%, with imports increasing by 10 2% and exports by 7.9%. The growth in the first half of the year continued in the third quarter, with 12 3% more containers handled (TEUs) than in the same quarter last year Over the first nine months, total container throughput in TEUs increased by 6.8% to 10,152,000 TEUs.
In the first half of this year, Port of Antwerp-Bruges' market share in container handling in the Hamburg –Le Havre Range grew by 0.8 percentage points compared to 2023, to 30.7%.
Nearly 1 in 10 of the containers handled is a reefer container In the first nine months of 2024, the number of full reefers increased by 9.7%, accounting for 8.5% of total container throughput. These temperature-controlled containers carry products such as fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. Thanks to its strategic location, fast maritime connections and specialist terminals, Port of Antwerp-Bruges confirms its strong position in the reefer segment.
Although conventional general cargo performed strongly in the second quarter, throughput fell in the third quarter, bringing total throughput for the first nine months of 2024 down by 4.8% compared to last year Iron and steel decreased slightly by 0.6%, with increased exports (+4%) partially offsetting lower imports (-3.5%). This decline is due to a lower demand from steel processing sectors such as construction and automotive Products such as wood ( - 3 2 . 9 % ) , p a p e r a n d c e l l u l o s e ( - 2 2 . 6 % ) a n d construction materials (-36.9%) also saw a decline, while non-containerised throughput of fruit, vegetables and other refrigerated cargo increased by 4.1%.
Roll-on/roll-off traffic dropped by 5.5%. While pressure on car terminals eased, this was due to reduced imports, not due to increased demand from customers. Throughput of transport equipment declined by 13.3%, high & heavy by 23.5%, trucks by 10.3%, and used cars by 42.6%. New car shipments, which surged in 2022 and 2023, fell by 11.4% in the first nine months of this year Throughput of unaccompanied cargo (excluding containers) on RoRo vessels in Zeebrugge rose by 2 8% The decline in traffic to and from the United Kingdom (-4.1%) was amply offset by an increase in throughput to and from Spain and Portugal (+35 7%), Scandinavia (+16.7%) and Ireland (+2.2%).
Throughput of dry bulk fell by 1.4%, mainly due to a sharp drop in throughput of coal (-55 3%) Indeed, dry bulk, excluding energy products such as coal and wood pellets, grew by 9.5%. Fertilisers, the largest product category in this segment, continued its growth (+30 6%) after a sharp decline in 2022 due to sanctions and high gas prices Other building materials and non-ferrous ores also grew by 7.3% and 4.8%, respectively, while sand & gravel (+0.1%) and scrap (-0.7%) remained more or less stable.
Liquid bulk throughput fell by 2.5% after nine months, due to lower volumes of liquid fuels (-8 9%) and LNG (-10.2%). Diesel throughput (-23.1%) in particular declined due to weak demand, while LPG (+8.8%), fuel oil (+8.4%),
naphtha (+2.9%) and gasoline (+2.3%) showed growth. The throughput of chemicals increased by 9.3%, partly due to the strong increase in the throughput of biofuels (+52 5%) Even without this effect, chemicals showed growth (+7%). Chemical gases (+9.5%) and basic chemicals (+8.6%) also showed positive trends. Despite this recovery, the European chemicals sector remains under pressure due to high costs for energy, raw materials and wages, combined with low global demand.
In the first nine months of 2024, Zeebrugge welcomed 412,774 cruise passengers (+17.5%) on 143 cruise ships, 10 cruise ships more than last year
In the first nine months of 2024, 15,015 ocean-going vessels called at the port, down by 2%. The gross tonnage of these vessels fell by 4.8% to 472.45 million GT. Focus on energy transition and industrial growth
Despite ongoing geopolitical and economic challenges, Port of Antwerp-Br uges' growth is stabilising The figures again underscore the resilience of the port, which in complex times continues to pioneer and invest in a future-proof port where sustainability and economic growth go hand in hand The expansion of Zuidnatie, which started with the construction of a new warehouse for processing steel coils this summer, and the acquisition of Luik Natie by Lineage, confirm the port's importance in specialist segments The recently announced investments, such as Vioneo's fossil-free plastics production and Indaver's Plastics-to-chemicals, which converts polystyrene (PS) and polyolefins (PO) into recycled naphtha, in turn strengthen the port's position in the energy transition and sustainable innovation
Port of Antwerp-Bruges will continue to focus on strengthening its infrastructure and offering sustainable logistics solutions that contribute to the industry's efforts in CO₂ reduction and digitalisation. Following the installation of one of Europe's largest public charging hubs for electric trucks in Antwerp, the initial foundations were laid in Zeebrugge for a truck park with charging infrastructure. In addition, the CHERISH2O project, which aims to purify and reuse industrial wastewater, is contributing to the port's development as a circular hub.
Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO Port of AntwerpBruges: "Despite the complex times in which we operate, with geopolitical tensions, rising energy prices and global competition, we are stabilising our growth, thanks in part to our strong position in container handling. Sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, cyberattacks and other challenges are forcing us to remain flexible and resilient. Along with our partners, we are continuing to build a future-proof port where innovation supports both sustainability and economic growth. Investments like those of Vioneo and Indaver reflect confidence in our port and in the future of European industry."

N E W D E L H I : T h e I n d i a Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall in Odisha and West Bengal as Cyclone Dana, the first major storm of the cyclone season, is expected to make landfall on October 24 and prevail until October 25.
Earlier, the IMD reported that a low-pressure area had formed over the Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea, likely to intensify into a depression by October 22 and a cyclonic storm by October 23, moving towards the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24. The IMD further indicated that the lowpressure area is likely to move westnorthwest and intensify into a
depression by October 22 morning and a cyclonic storm by October 23 over the east-central Bay of Bengal
"Low-Pressure Area formed over east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Andaman Sea. Under the influence of yesterday's upper air cyclonic circulation over North Andaman Sea and adjoining eastcentral & southeast Bay of Bengal, a Low-Pressure Area formed over the East-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Andaman Sea in the early morning (0530 hours IST) of today, the 21st October 2024," the IMD had posted on X.
Cyclone Dana: Districts, states to see impact
The IMD has issued a red alert for
heavy rain in districts such as Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, and
meteorological office noted that West Bengal's Purba Medinapur, P
24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas are likely to experience very heavy rainfall; with Howrah, Hooghly, and Jhargram likely to see heavy rain between October 23 and 24
Wind conditions are expected to worsen, and may intensify to 100-110 km/h, with gusts up to 120 km/h from the night of October 24 through the morning of October 25 in both states, noted IMD.
LONDON: India’s attempts at boosting its manufacturing sector by capitalizing on the US-China trade war have fallen short, according to a new study, with other Asian rivals benefiting to a much greater extent from escalating tensions between the world’s biggest economies.
Between 2017 and 2023, India’s total share in US imports rose by 0.6 percentage points to 2.7% while mainland China’s portion dropped by around 8 percentage points to under 14%, according to Oxford Economics. The biggest beneficiary from the trade diversion in the region has been Vietnam, whose total share in US
imports grew by 1.7 percentage points to 3.7% in the period.
Taiwan and South Korea have also made greater strides than India, increasing their share of US imports by 1 percentage point and 0 7 percentage points, respectively, according to Oxford.
The study underscores the uphill task facing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he attempts to b o o s t t h e c o u n t r y ’ s l a g g i n g manufacturing sector, whose share of gross domestic product has remained broadly stagnant at 17% for over a decade The research also implies that India may struggle to
make significant gains if Donald Trump returns as US president and follows through with a threat to impose a 60% tariff on Chinese goods.
“The US-China trade war so far h a s i m p r o v e d I n d i a ’ s e x p o r t prospects only to a limited extent, dashing hopes that an escalation of the conflict could boost the lagging manufacturing sector,” Alexandra Hermann, an economist at Oxford Economics wrote in a note. “India’s export strengths largely lie in sectors of the ‘old economy’, where growth potential is limited and competition is fierce.”
NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has taken decisive action to protect India’s micro, small, and medium enterprises by recommending a USD 422 per tonne anti-dumping duty on Telescopic Channel Drawer Sliders
imported from China.
In its investigation, the DGTR found that these imports are being sold at prices below average value, constituting dumping and significantly affecting domestic industries by undercuttingtheirprices
While the finance ministry will have the final say, this measure is seen as a strategic move to ensure fair trading practices as per WTO rules, aiming to create an equitable platform for domestic producers confronting cheap imports.
NEW DELHI: The Government has exempted parboiled rice and husked (brown) rice from export duty. Export duty has been reduced from 10 per cent to 'nil' on parboiled rice, husked (brown) rice and rice in the husk (paddy or rough), said a late
night notification issued by the Finance Ministry
The duty cuts came into effective from October 22.
S o u r c e s s a i d E l e c t i o n Commission's clearance has been obtained on this duty cut, subject to
the condition that no political mileage is derived out of the same.
Jharkhand and Maharashtra are going to polls next month.
Last month, the Government had exempted non-basmati white rice from export duty

NEW DELHI: Indian apparel exporters will witness a revenue growth of 9-11% in FY25, driven by a gradual liquidation of retail inventory in key markets and a shift towards sourcing from India as part of global derisking strategies, as per a report by Icra.
This positive outlook comes after a challenging FY24, during which exports faced significant hurdles due to high retail inventory levels, sluggish demand, supply chain disruptions—partially caused by the Red Sea crisis and intensified competition from neighbouring countries.
The projections are based on Icra’s analysis of a sample set of 15 apparel exporting companies, which collectively represent about
15% of total Indian apparel exports. Despite the tepid performance last fiscal year, the long-term prospects for Indian apparel exports remain favourable, the credit rating agency said in a report. Enhanced product acceptance in global markets, evolving consumer trends, and Government support through initiatives like the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and export incentives are expected to contribute to this growth trajectory, the report added.
Furthermore, the proposed free trade agreements (FTAs) with the UK and the EU are anticipated to bolster the sector. In the first half of FY25, apparel exports increased by about 9% year-on-year, amounting to $7.5 billion. This recovery is attributed to
the gradual liquidation of inventory and a higher number of orders booked for the upcoming spring/summer season.
“After a marginal decline of 2% in FY2024, Indian apparel exporters are expected to report a revenue growth of 9-11% in Fy2025,” said S r i k u m a r K r i s h n a m u r t h y, Senior Vice President at ICRA. “This growth will be supported by derisking strategies adopted by v a r i o u s c u s t o m e r s a n d t h e replenishment of retail inventory in key markets, particularly in the US and the EU,” he said.
However, he cautioned that c h a l l e n g e s a r o u n d d
m a n d uncertainty persist due to a subdued macroeconomic environment and geopolitical issues.
NEW DELHI: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently kept its growth forecasts for India unchanged at 7 per cent for FY25 and 6.5 per cent for FY26, holding that pent-up demand accumulated during the pandemic has been exhausted as the economy “reconnects” with its potential growth.
“In India, the outlook is for gross domestic product (GDP) growth to moderate from 8.2 per cent in 2023 to 7 per cent in 2024 and 6.5 per cent in 2025, because pent-up demand accumulated during the pandemic has been exhausted as the economy reconnects with its potential,” it said in its latest World Economic Outlook report.
The IMF notes that important sectoral and regional shifts underpin the stable global outlook , with goods prices remaining elevated compared
services a lingering effect of the pandemic and its aftermath. Also, a global shift from goods to services consumption i s u n d e r w a y, w i t h emerging markets like India and China gaining i n m a n u f a c t u r i n g production.
“This rebalancing is tending to boost activity in the services sector in advanced and emerging markets but is dampening manufacturing Manufacturing production is also increasingly shifting toward emerging market economies—in particular, China and India—as advanced economies lose competitiveness,” it notes.
For China, the IMF revised downwards its 2024 growth projection
by 20 basis points to 4.8 per cent, while for the United States, it revised upwards by 20 basis points to 2.8 per cent.
“Deeper- or longer-than-expected contraction in China’s property sector, especially if it leads to financial instability, could weaken consumer sentiment and generate negative global spillovers given China’s large footprint in global trade,” it noted.
